Jason Reid, John DeNunzio

What exactly are you all "trying to do here?"

Kinks? Excuse me? Are you kidding a Chia? The whole thing is one big kink.

Make it go away!

I like the idea of video reporting, but not these videos. With today's technology this is the best the post can do? Sad...

Posted by: donj1963 | June 4, 2008 11:49 AM | Report abuse

I still don't get it. A picture is supposed to be worth a thousand words, but what do 4 minutes of low definition pictures of Jason Reid moving his lips add to this blog? Less than a thousand words.

The content was good, but the visuals could benefit from a rethink. For me, I would rather have read it, which would have been a lot faster.

Old media can't do new media, and the Post continues to drive that point home.

Posted by: talent evaluator | June 4, 2008 11:49 AM | Report abuse

Keep it coming Jason Reid and the Washington Post. Ignore The Crybabies!

Posted by: Chia Pet | June 4, 2008 11:53 AM

Maybe there's a writer's strike? Actually, the writer's the only one on the job. What we're missing is the producer, the director, the cameraman, the lighting tech, the key grip, the dolly, the best boy, and the catering crew. Too low budget to be credible.

One thing I like about the Blog Posts is that I can scan it really quickly to know exactly what you all are going to talk about (or the title's tell me). Could you be a bit more descriptive in your titles or perhaps write a short-lead in or in the first 15 seconds be upfront with me and tell me the three things you're going to talk about. I think we'll all get a little more interested in the content if you're upfront about it.

As long as the vids are in addition to posts then I don't mind 'em. Hopefully at some point they try to interview guys - Portis' antics are definitely more fun to watch than read online. I'd also move it out to the field if they can or at least in front of a Skins logo or something. Almost anything would be better than a plain white wall in the background.

I don't think they can shoot from Redskins Park, otherwise they would.

Redskins.com has all the vids to satisfy your audio visual yearnings; can even see Jason Reid in the background of many of the shots, holding a mic.

How do you expect people to take you seriously as Professionals if you look worse than Amateurs on YouTube? Sure, content trumps image, but DANG!

Nunz, J-Reid, I don't have any trouble with this video, but I have an idea you might want to try. This is based on Talking Points where you have more than one person, and it's the banter that really makes it worth watching.

Maybe you could try that for one of these installments, versus one person addressing the camera. Just a thought.

Maybe the Jasons comparing notes after a day at the Park, if you guys are both out there at the same time? I think that could be pretty darn cool, and having a dialogue would let your personalities show through (and would take advantage of this video medium more so than one speaker addressing the camera). I know you guys have

Thanks for trying new stuff, especially in the face of a highly demanding audience.

Nate,

That's good, constructive criticism.

Modeling "Redskins Unrestricted" after Talking points might work better, but it's the large personalities that drive Talking Points (see Kornheiser and Wilbon.)

This might be a stretch for the two Jasons, but I agree, it could be worth a go.

Invest in voice to Text technology.

Nothing against Jason Reid, who does a good job reporting the issues in an unbiased manner (as opposed to some of the other WP bloggers), but video of him standing in front of a wall offers no value to readers/browsers/customers.

Until something changes and Jason can offer video (I'm sure it's a restriction from the club and out of Jason's hands) text is the way to go. Text can be read up to 4 times faster than humans speak (obviously it's variable, but the point is valid), doesn't have the same bandwidth issues (which may be the reason some readers can't understand Jason - Internet lag).

Voice to text technology would allow much faster posting of blog entries (as speech can be quicker than typing - again variable).

Video, unless it has VALUE, is out. Online text allows readers to absorb what their looking for and skip what they're not much more quickly. Ask ESPN if their growth is in online content or on TV.

Still - love the unbiased Skins coverage, Jason Reid. Good stuff - thanks for the content!

Posted by: Chia Pet | June 4, 2008 1:06 PM | Report abuse

Alex,

I think Chia's right. A bunch of old media guys (Jason, Jon, Jasno, Cindy) hit on the idea "Hey, let's go new media!" Not a bad idea, but the implementation is the problem.

Instead of hiring someone with experience and background to help them, they're doing it themselves. And, like most people who try to re-invent the wheel, what they've re-invented is the flat tire.

They're not the solution -- they're the problem. Until the Post puts some money behind this and gives them some resources, training, or a technical expert, it's going to continue to struggle.

I vow to keep my pants on the entire time.

Although it wouldn't be a shabingus if everything was classy.

Well at the very worst I could do something like that after Saturday.

Oh and 1 more thought, if we have any other jewish folks on here who would not mind helping me out by writing me some funny material. That would be great. I am only one half jew so I am funny at best 50% of the time.

Nicely done. I enjoyed this episode. Don't mind the people that expect this to look like it is HD quality.

As usual, nothing new from Reid - an exponent of the obvious in everything reported whether in this tacky video, guesting on WPL, or in print which if he does write a column is old news. Please bring back Mark Maske as the Post Redskins reporter.
