Re-posted to simplify flaming me

Here's my NFC East WAGS

Giants 11-5 (Div champs, no idea what they do in the playoffs)
Eagles 9-7 (think they miss the playoffs)
Cowboys 9-7 (sure they miss the playoffs)
Skins 6-10/7-9 (better by end of the season, but unless Jim Zorn should the CIA head, the O looks like they need some more practice)

and this just make me laugh ruefully

From the DMN: The physically unable to perform list is not an option. A player has to be placed on the PUP list at the beginning of training camp to be eligible to be on it during the regular season.

I'm not going to wade through over 500 posts in three threads but has anything been said about why Jason Taylor was sitting in the owners box with Snyder? It was mentioned during the radio broadcast last night and then again on the post-game show.

A terrible example for the rest of the team and an a classic show of "f&^% you" by Snyder and Taylor.

Posted by: JT | August 29, 2008 4:46 PM

I didn't know this. The only person I remember doing this was LaVar.

Taylor must not have read up on recent redskins controversies of recent past........

I saw him on TV, sitting in the box, and wondered why he was up there.

Only legit reason I can think of is so that he could watch the defense. But for that, shouldn't he have been in the coaches' box?

Last time we played the NYG, we beat them in NJ. Solidly. The NYG lost 1/2 their defense, including perhaps the two most important pieces in Strahan and Umenyouri. It was their defense that won the SB, not the offense.

Our defense is pretty much in tact.

THE ONE THING TO WATCH FOR vs NYG:

Do the Skins play with heart?

Given what happened in 2007 and the players are the same, you would hope for some real carryover. If its there, the season will go well. If not, its big time trouble

There is no way that Taylor was "watching the defense". Snyder invited him up there to again surround himself with a celebrity and its probably half of the reason why he was signed. If it had been Marcus Mason do you think he would been up there?

Question for those who know the Union rules better than I do myself.

Can the Skins cut Janson.
Then ask him to come back as a back up and pay him accordingly?

Or does he have to be signed by someone else and released before we could sign him as a backup.

Can anyone cite an NFL rule?
Thanks

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | August 29, 2008 8:17 PM | Report abuse

He can be cut and re-signed immediately. The problem is he still costs us from his signing bonus which will be accelerated. Best thing to do is keep him as a back up and cut him next using June 09 as the effective date.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 29, 2008 8:21 PM | Report abuse

that would be next season.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 29, 2008 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Here are some #s on Jansen.

---------------
Should Heyer earn the starting job one would have to wonder if Jansen would even make the team. If you're going for youth, why not go all the way? Jansen signed a five-year, $23 million contract extension before the '07 season. Why keep an expensive 32-year-old veteran around when you could use his roster spot for a less-costly youngster?

The cost of cutting him would be high, but not prohibitively so. He has about $6 million in unallocated bonus money from 2009-2011. Subtract his scheduled '09 salary of about $1.3 million and you'd have a $4.7 million dead cap hit for 2009. Against a cap of about $120 million, that's certainly doable.

While it's possible, releasing Jansen may not be such a good idea. His 2008 salary is just $730,000 and considering that his potential replacement would also cost at least $300,000, resulting in a savings of just over $400K.

Liked your first post. Taylor's got a bum knee. Why should he be standing on the sideline? So he can get run into or something stupid. Did see he had a glass of merlot in front of him. Drink a beer dude.

Your second post has to be the female in you. Zorn has to make these guys accountable. They are professional athletes being paid a ton of money. If they are being truthful with themselves, they know they deserve it for the last 2 games performance. It might be a long season but at least we will get some full games from dudes like CP, Moss, Cooley, Landry. hopefully next thursday will be fun.

This is true but keep in mind the last time we played them in NY and beat them solidly we had a HOF head coach in Gibbs, Willaims was teh D cord., the team had been in the offense for over a year & they were riding high on emotion from the Sean taylor passing.

I'd say it's completely different now.

Everybody is overreacting. We are running a vanilla offense and defense. I bet over half the stuff we ran all preseason wont be run again.
Our true offense will be shown off on september 4th. the stuff we ran was just simple plays with the concepts in the WCO and I think the skins will be fine.
Along with getting Laron landry and Jason Taylor back...i think those two would help a little

Posted by: Anonymous | August 29, 2008 11:00 PM | Report abuse

Anon, I agree. If the team decides to cut Jansen, the best time do so is post June 1, 2009. This way most of his cap hit would be allocated to 2010, which is uncapped.

There's some weirdness with how bonuses are calculated going into uncapped years.
Or, at least there was last time this was a serious consideration.
Ultimately, I find it hard to believe that Buges wouldn't sit Jansen if 'next man up' was an upgrade. That said, his performance in games has been very poor, and practice reports aren't any better.

Anyone able to explain the PUP list? Not understanding why we are not able to put Kelly on the PUP list now. I thought that it worked differently once the roster is being trimmed down to 53 players.

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 30, 2008 12:03 AM | Report abuse

Zorn expects veteran reserve tackle Todd Wade, who has missed much of the preseason with a high ankle sprain, to return to practice this week.

----------

I hope this does not mean he is making the team.

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 30, 2008 12:14 AM | Report abuse

I have no real explanations, but it was at least a couple of weeks ago that Jasno reported that neither Carlos nor E. James would be placed on the PUP. And it was pretty clear from the tone that it was a permanent decision.

Ah, here it is: (from August 1)
The Redskins had debated internally whether or not Rogers would need to open the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list, but placing him with that designation is no longer an option. When Rogers, who underwent major reconstructive knee surgery in November, was cleared for full participation in 11-on-11 drills this week it made him ineligible to open the season on the PUP list, and means he will count against the 53-man roster limit to open the season even if he is still not able to play in regular season games.

Must be the only one without plans on a Friday night during a three day weekend. My excuse is that my wife is working late.

Read the JLC chat from earlier today. Not sure why he is so down on the skins FO. Being that he is a Ravens fan he should be happy with the way the FO is managing the skins. If he is a skins fan, then he is way too negative.

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 30, 2008 12:21 AM | Report abuse

C&D, I remember that article/post. I was reading where NE put some players on the PUP list yesterday, so I thought that the ability to add players to the PUP list at the time of cuts was an option. Just don't know enough about that rule to know for sure. Let's see if I can find those articles.

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 30, 2008 12:24 AM | Report abuse

Just whiling away time before I check my son.
honestly, people Up Here spend too much time divining Jasno's intent. He's not a skins fan -- nor should he be -- but I never really pegged him as a Ravens fan either. He definitely admires the Ravens FO, but they have some pretty sharp people involved and a trophy that isn't too dusty.
The skins FO is a work in progress, and success is unproven. There are probably some things they've done that seem petty to Jasno, and the bottom line is that he's got an angle on the team that he thinks explains things.

Posted by: cload & daggar | August 30, 2008 12:32 AM | Report abuse

Also just spinning my wheels waiting for my wife to come home. When I first started reading RI, I used to get mad at JLC's view of the Skins (not separating the team from the FO). Since then I have come to see that that is just JLC, so have not said much in that regard. Just thought that he went out of his way today to blame everything on the FO and decided to make a comment. Mostly I just ignore his take as I feel he is vindictive and was just sayin.

Have not tried this yet but thought I would post my 53 man roster since I have all this time on my hands.

QB- JC, TC & CB
RB- CP, LB & MM
FB- Sellers
WR- Moss, ARE, Thrash, McMullen, Thomas, Mann (Kelly either on PUP or IR)
TE- Cooley, Yoder & Davis
OL- Samuels, Kendall, Rabach, Thomas, Heyer, Jansen, Reinhart, Geisigner, Crummy
Offense 25
DL- Taylor, Montgomery, Griffin, Carter, Golston, Alexander, James, Jackson, Boschetti
LB- Fletcher, McIntosh, Washington, Campbell, Blades, Fincher
S- LL, Morton, Moore, Doughty, Hamilton
CB- Springs, Rogers, Smoot, Torrence, Richardson
Defense 25
ST- Albright, Suisham, Brooks
ST 3
If there is one more DL player, then only 5 WR or 4 Safeties.

Evans would be the other DL that may make the team. And of course Mason has been someone I have backed since before the draft so I thought I would list him here.

To most here the Redskins are a team that we love and are passionate about. To Jasno they are his job. Let me write a blog about the people I interact with at work all day. It might occasionally seem a little negative. It might even have lots of profanity and childish name calling.

will_ga, interesting view. I need to read his post/articles with that perspective.

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 30, 2008 1:01 AM | Report abuse

Jasno has been pretty firm that Evans will play a big role on the d-line; he gives you back ~20 lb. of the ~40 lb. difference between Daniels and Taylor, and can play DT to boot.
I think maybe you tuck Jackson on the practice squad; Wilson is no worse, may have some upside, and won't make it to the practice squad -- he had how many sacks last year?
I like Mason, but I don't see him supplanting Rock -- if he proved to be a Teams Stud, that'd be one thing, but 4th string RBs are a dime a dozen.
I assume that Kelly can't go PUP, and they don't want to stick him on IR (isn't there a prohibition on IR players practicing with the team?)... so I'd replace Mann with Kelly.

Posted by: cload & daggar | August 30, 2008 1:24 AM | Report abuse

And I think I've figured out the PUP thing... you can go on PUP any time before the season starts, but if you are cleared to practice anytime during training camp, IR is the only place you can go. So if NE is putting people on PUP this week, it's got to be guys that haven't practiced yet this summer.
Which makes moving Kelly to IR a little more expensive cap-wise (or rather, makes Mann more expensive -- and more expendable).

Posted by: cload & daggar | August 30, 2008 1:29 AM | Report abuse

When is the practice squad announced? Will it be tomorrow as well?

Posted by: will_ga | August 30, 2008 1:34 AM | Report abuse

My list may have been more wish list than actual list. I agree if we cannot put Kelly on PUP list because he practiced then supplant him with Mann.

I do think that they have been trying to find a way to keep Mason or getting tape to trade him. 4th and even 3rd RBs are plentyful and that guy from the Jags, Washington would be nice in place of both Rock and Mason unless our D made him look that good.

As to the PUP, NE did have several on the PUP list to begin training camp so that may be how they were able to move players there now.

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 30, 2008 1:41 AM | Report abuse

Once players are cut, they have to clear waivers in order to be signed to the practice squad, so the PS may not be announced until Monday.

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 30, 2008 1:43 AM | Report abuse

it'll probably be day after tomorrow. all players have to clear waivers, then skins can sign them to practice squad.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 30, 2008 1:46 AM | Report abuse

I think they waive everyone tomorrow, then after people clear waivers, they can add them to the practice squad.
I don't recall if they tell us who they're planning on signing... that would probably not be something they want to tell the rest of the league.

Posted by: cload & daggar | August 30, 2008 1:48 AM | Report abuse

I don't like the comments about Wade being able to practice this week - unless that is for another team as his lame arse should be sent packing later today.

Can't see Rock losing his job to anyone. Wasn't he rested in the last preseason game? Which pretty much means he already made the team.

The gospel according to SIC

1) Fred Davis will have a big rookie year.

2) Billy McMullen will surprise this year.

3) Love the Heyer move. Gibbs would have never done this in his overcommittment to veterans. FO and Bugel get props for Heyer find.

4) Stop cryin' about Zorn callin' these guys out. They are men. He's not "ripping" them. These are grown men.

5) Laron Landry can't just step on the field and turn it on. I'm a bit worried.

6)I'm worried about JC. Not confident enough. Just throw the damn ball! Stop pattin' it!!!!

And that's the gospel according to SIC

Our true offense will be shown off on september 4th. the stuff we ran was just simple plays with the concepts in the WCO and I think the skins will be fine.
Along with getting Laron landry and Jason Taylor back...i think those two would help a little

Yeah Anon, but there is a flipside to your logic which says Carolina and the Jags were running vanilla offenses too and we couldn't stop either one.It seems to me that their vanilla outvanillaed our vanilla. Is outvannillaed a word, and if so,did I use it in its proper context?

I think that Carolina ran "Rocky Road" offense and "Dulce de Leche" defense. Jacksonville used "Chunky Monkey" offense and "Mint Almond Double Chocolate Swirl" defense. So, the odds were way stacked against us.

I was just looking at rookie stats during this preseason. I was interested in how some of the young d-lineman who the skins were rumored to be interested in did. Looks like C. Campbell had a good preseaon with 15 total tackles (12 solo). He didn't have a sack, but what I've been reading is that he has been impressing the Arizona coaching staff.

That's too bad. We were trying to trade them Malcolm Kelly for C. Campbell.

The one the 'Skins were really interested in was Philip Merling, but Miami snatched him in the second round, just before the 'Skins took Thomas. His stats aren't much, but apparently the 'Phins staff are high on him.
