Reid on Cerrato

Jason Reid discusses his interview with Vinny Cerrato.

In addition to saying that Jim Zorn would return as coach of the Redskins and discussing the offseason, Cerrato talked about the development of quarterback Jason Campbell:

"Just the way he handles checks and getting us out of bad plays, changing pass protections, he's controlling that at the line of scrimmage. Statistically, and everything he has improved, you see fundamentally how he's improved. To me, he's made great strides up to this point. Is he where he can be? No. He's got room. He's got a high ceiling. Has he gotten there yet? No. He hasn't reached his potential yet. He's still learning, growing and developing."
But Cerrato stopped short of saying he is convinced that Campbell could become a championship-caliber quarterback. "I don't think you can answer that," he said. "How do you know? He's still developing and learning."

Here we go....

Posted by: Rypien11 | December 23, 2008 10:50 AM | Report abuse

I think DT is a higher priority than DE, even though the depth at DT is serviceable -- Golsten ... who will require podiatric surgery and should be back at the top of his game ... Lozo (love Lozo) ... Montgomery (trade bait on my ledger) ... and Spaghetti (all heart, SHOULD be ready to arrive soon) -- Cornelius has reached his pinnacle and is on the decline (maybe sharply so). NONE of the DTs compare to Cornelius. The draft seems big and beefy at DT, like plenty of 3-4 ready NT types in this season's crop ... I think that is where we go with the first round pick.

It kills me that we don't have a second round pick. For me, DT slightly edges out OT, but only on a prayer of a return of a healthy Samuels and another offseason up bump from Heyer, esp. in getting his ass down (fancy term for lowering his center of gravity) for run blocking.

At DE, I think that if interior guys are required to always double team at least one of the DTs, then the pocket will collapse and the DE rotators (Carter, Evans, Chris Wilson, maybe Buzbee, Rob Jackson, sometimes Taylor, sometimes Lozo, hell, I'm even willing to hold out for a recovery by Phillip Daniels) can hold down the fort for another year.

Did I mention what a drag it is that we don't have a second round pick?

OLB is also a gaping hole. I don't know where to begin with that. We need to strike gold in undrafted free agency.

Also, FREE JASON REID!

Based on the gradual improvement I have witnessed this season he (Campbell) should get one more season to prove his worth, however I would go into camp with an open QB competition between the three QB on the roster.

SERIOUS KNEE INJURY SCREWS UP ANDREWS’ SHOT AT FREE AGENCY
Posted by Mike Florio on December 23, 2008, 10:21 a.m.
With receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh and running back Cedric Benson heading toward free agency in Cincinnati, it’s likely that one of them will be slapped with the franchise tag.

And, of course, this would mean that last year’s recipient of the designations, tackle Stacy Andrews, would be free to hit the open market.

His value would have been considerably higher, however, if he hadn’t suffered multiple knee ligament tears on Sunday against the Browns.

The injury occurred in the final six or seven plays of the game, according to coach Marvin Lewis. He also said that Andrews tore his ACL and other ligaments.

The end result? Andrews won’t get a big-money deal when free agency launches in March. Instead, he’ll likely sign after his rehab has sufficiently progressed a multi-year “prove it” deal requiring him to re-establish his health and ability in 2009 before unlocking significant bonus payments in 2010.

I seen this movie before it was called the "Erasmus James Experiment". The story line: A defensive NFL player shreads his knee and against all odds makes an attempt to play football again. Sadly the injury changes the player forever and he is unable to perform at the level he was pre-injury.

Korny: No Radio Return Until "MNF" Gig Totally Over - 12/17 - Nevermind that his old (now defunct) 3WT (previously Washington Post Radio) radio show didn't garner the ratings gold he'd hoped, longtime Washington Post sports columnist and ESPN "Pardon The Interruption" co-host Tony Kornheiser (left) now says that he won't return to local radio until he steps away from the football broadcast booth at ESPN's "Monday Night Football." He tells Dan Levy's On The DL podcast: "I mean, I don't want to yo-yo. don't want to do it five months on and six months off, or five months on and seven months off, whatever the math is... I'm not gonna do radio until I can do radio forever. There is no radio as long as I'm doing football, though I'll happily be a guest on anybody else's radio show whenever they want me.... If I'm doing 'Monday Night Football' I can't take a paycheck from (Redskins owner) Dan Snyder (who owns ESPN 980)... But it also seems to me troubling that if his company owns the radio station and I'm employed ostensibly doing commentary on the National Football League teams, how can it not be a conflict?" For the past few years, Kornheiser had been doing his local radio show from January to June, leaving from July through December to do his "MNF" duties.....

Vinny must go....how much more do you need to see? Have you seen what real GMs do in this league?

Posted by: chrislarry | December 23, 2008 11:14 AM

Yes. And that can not happen here.

Here's why......

No one mentioned this yesterday, but on the Vinny Radio Show, a caller asked what is Vinny's relationship with the owner as far as how many times he meets up with him, talk strategy, yada yada.

Vinny said when he was in SanFran, he hardly spoke with the owner. He wasn't around necessarily everyday. He said he speaks to Danny way more than he has had with the previous owner and pretty much left it at that.

There. How can a real GM and do his job? He can't. And we are forced to live with it.

So given those facts, I'm willing to give Vinny another season of full responsibility......

Seems like it would be a lot cheaper to put a franchise tag on a punter than a CB. This year, Asomugha got the highest level tag (exclusive rights franchise tag) so re-tagging him this year seems even crazier than something Al Davis would do ... though I guess records are made to be broken. It would be plenty to be able to keep both Rogers and Hall ... Asomugha would seem to be able to command the salary that requires a team to forego the rest of free agency, as well as the first day of the draft. He could make a crappy team good (Lions?), a decent team great (Cards?), and a playoff team unstoppable (take your pick, except for the Cards and maybe the winner of the NFC North).

Good point ... but their shorter-than-Tom-Cruise sized QB is about 400+ yards away from Marino's single season passing record.

Posted by: dcsween | December 23, 2008 11:21 AM

dc, I think this is because Brees has enough sense to know that the pocket is collapsing around him - how many times you see Brees throwing on the run? Usually those are the passes that go for more than 30 yards.

That is something the 'skins dont have: a QB with the "knack" and "wit", and passes that go for more than 30 yards.

13. Washington Redskins - Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss
Jerry has had a strong season at Ole Miss, and he has moved into strong first round projection territory with his performance and with this being such a weak draft at defensive tackle. The Redskins have been good against the run, but with a high-end DT plugging the middle they could become even better at in in 2009.

If we have the choice of picking that guy or trading back, I'm down for trading back, just cause he's a defensive player.

We should be looking at any of the top 5 OT's, top 2 OG's, or best C with our first pick. If not, trade back.

Suitable first round picks for me :

Micheal Oher OT
Jason Smith OT
Alex Mack C
Cirron Black OT
Eugene Monroe OT
Andre Smith OT
Duke Robinson OG
Aaron Curry LB

really that's all, and a couple of those guys are reaches. If we can't get one of those, we should trade back.

Been thinking this through. The Skins have two major challenges. First, the cap. It limits how much turnover they can do each year. Second, the holes.

I'm thinking they are best off reducing the risk of failure for their draft. Which means moving up to get a very top OL. Yes, its a cap risk.

To me, the bigger risk is they draft a lesser quality guy in later in the 1st round ... and he doesn't pan out. Further, there is little guarantee that any of the lower picks will work out (see: draft class 2008).

A draft class in 2009, where none of the players have an impact, would be awful.

Move up and get a stud OL.

Truth, WOuld you really take a Center (Alex Mack) with the 1st round pick? I understand that O-linemen can sometimes play more than one position. But, to take someone with your 1st pick and then put them in a brand new position is risky and you will, most likely, not have them on the field in year one. Believe me, I am all about addressing the O-Line needs, but I think that we have more gaping holes on the team than Center.

Sweeny -

2009 - Last Capped Year
2010 - Last Year in CBA
2011 - Lock out by Owners (Who will 'win' this time)

According to my sources, if there is not a renegotiation of the CBA by the New League year of 2009 (1st Week in April 2009), then the league will def be heading into the uncapped year, and there's no returning from that.

There will be no renegotiation by then because of the untimely death of Upshaw and the players haven't voted on on new Head of the Union yet......

The GM job:

Lots of people to turnover in the next 3 years. Who do you turnover when?

Its a very difficult job. You need to try let guys go just before they get 'old'.

What do you do with older, talented guys with injury history? Springs, Griffin, Washington, R Thomas, Daniels -- they can all play decent (good) football), when healthy.

What about Kendall, Rabach, Carter? Whendo you cut these guys loose?

When will Fletcher, Samuels and Portis get 'old'. Can Jason Taylor play in 2009 like he did vs philly.

Very tricky choices for the Spaghetti Gang, especially with the cap effectively tying their hands on some moves (aka Jansen)
