Remembering 21: The Taylor Ceremony (Updated)

Compiled from Jason La Canfora's on-site reporting:

The Washington Redskins inducted the late Sean Taylor into their Ring of Fame at FedEx Field Sunday, adding his name to the list of the franchise's best-ever players.

The Redskins held a ceremony before the game against the New York Giants and replaced the team symbol painted at midfield with the number 21, which Taylor wore in four seasons in Washington.

Taylor died on Nov. 27, 2007, a day after he was shot during a break-in at his Miami-area home.

Among the guests at the pregame ceremony were Taylor's father, Pedro; his mother, Donna Junor; and Jackie Garcia, the mother of Taylor's daughter, Jackie.

The ceremony began with a video montage of Taylor playing in high school, college and professionally.

"From our family we really appreciate the D.C. area, the fans and the many people who have blessed us through this trying time," Pedro Taylor said to the crowd. "We all understand that playing in the NFL is a privilege. Sean had the opportunity to play here in the hometown of the Washington Redskins, FedEx Field."

Taylor said he and his son spoke often about the impact of the crowd. Sean Taylor used to feed off that vibe, his father said.

"Right now Sean is rocking in heaven."

Taylor then asked the crowd: "Redskins, are you ready to rumble? Let's get it on."

Jim Zorn and the players asked to be on the field for the end of the ceremony, which has been paused. The PA announcer welcomed the Giants onto the field and the Redskins came out of the tunnel -- with Clinton Portis running out last carrying a banner with Taylor's number -- for the final moments of the ceremony and the fireworks. The players gathered behind the family and friends and Sean Taylor's name in the Ring of Fame was unveiled.

Taylor was announced as the starting free safety. The Redskins, wearing burgundy tops and white pants, have a black emblem with a number 21 in white on the jerseys.

Posted by: 70Chip | November 30, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

Ok, I admit I'm crabby with the flu.

But so far, we have your basic 6 yard pass when 8 are needed, followed by your basic 30 yard punt.

Just once I'd like to see this team have a good offensive showing with the first possession. In fact, they should be NOT be electing to receive if they win the coin toss.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 30, 2008 1:13 PM | Report abuse

I believe that was 40 yards on one play...a pass play.

Posted by: 70Chip | November 30, 2008 1:13 PM | Report abuse

damn. Am I the only one that thinks Smoot is our weakest of the 4 cbs?

Posted by: alex35332 | November 30, 2008 1:13 PM | Report abuse

Am I reading this right? The Giants scored on a 40yd to Toomer? Who got burned? Well Zorn won't be able to rely on the dump off's this game...

Posted by: ga8085 | November 30, 2008 1:14 PM | Report abuse

Hope Zorn is paying attention to the Giants' playcalling. Zorn had nothing on those first three plays.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 30, 2008 1:14 PM | Report abuse

How come they go downfield twice in the first drive and we don't do anything but throw short of the first down?

JM220

Posted by: icetotalpackage | November 30, 2008 1:14 PM | Report abuse

This is just pandering to gullible fans by Snyder. Sure, ST's death was a tragedy. But, he should have not been put into the ring of fame. He played in the NFL only 4 years. He went to the pro bowl twice (only the second one, he deserved). He was a troubled player half the time. Maybe he would have become a great player. It's not for certain. Building monuments everytime someone dies is not the way for society to progress.

Posted by: TotalRecall | November 30, 2008 1:15 PM | Report abuse

Zorn calls the Offense TE he cant control the D.

Posted by: alex35332 | November 30, 2008 1:15 PM | Report abuse

Well, on the blitzing I do have to say we are facing arguably the best OL in the game.

That may be the most positive thing I have all afternoon, though!

Posted by: messykat | November 30, 2008 1:15 PM | Report abuse

Yup; the ghost of Sean Taylor was all the 'Skins needed to beat the G-men...not!

Posted by: 70Chip | November 30, 2008 1:15 PM | Report abuse

justice98... you are right... our blitzes never seem to work... what's taht all about?

Posted by: fan-o-matic | November 30, 2008 1:16 PM | Report abuse

Why were they not rushing that PAT from the edge? Somebody needs to tear the edge rushers a new one. That's inexcusable.

Posted by: justice98 | November 30, 2008 1:16 PM | Report abuse

Doesn't Zorn script the first 21 plays or something like that? Not sure what he'll learn from watching other teams go deep on us, other than our O-line doesn't pass protect well enough.

Posted by: Alan4 | November 30, 2008 1:16 PM | Report abuse

JUST LAZINESS ON THAT PAT..... IF SOMEONE WOULD HAVE BEEN GOING FULL BORE, IT WOULD ONLY BE 6 TO 0 .... SMOOT POUBTING OVER THERE INSTEAD OF DOING HIS JOB!!!!!

If this was Petitbone Smooty would have just lost his job. Ah but Blache?

Posted by: periculum | November 30, 2008 1:19 PM | Report abuse

TotalRecall,

Did you watch the video tribute? He was a game-changer. He did more in 4 years than most do in an entire career. For most, 4 years is an entire pro football career. Sure, it is easy to get swept up in the unfulfilled potential, but when a player is that good, that early, it is difficult not to.

Bottom-line, he was the best player on the team and the best Safety in the league.

Posted by: Wemiss21 | November 30, 2008 1:19 PM | Report abuse

Campbell needs to take some chances. Those check downs are not going to work.

Posted by: Curzon417 | November 30, 2008 1:19 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: alex35332 | November 30, 2008 1:15 PM

Posted by: mofass79 | November 30, 2008 1:21 PM | Report abuse

WHy is it the checkdown routs are all 3 yards short of the marker.

Posted by: alex35332 | November 30, 2008 1:21 PM | Report abuse

We're allowed so sound ugly....LOL! Jeez, Zorn, grow a brain stem. Another 6 yard pass that doesn't quite move the chains because NINE yards were needed.

I just don't understand it. Seriously.

Posted by: messykat | November 30, 2008 1:21 PM | Report abuse

Not sure what he'll learn from watching other teams go deep on us, other than our O-line doesn't pass protect well enough.

Posted by: Alan4 | November 30, 2008 1:16 PM |

What he could learn:

1. Go deep on them.
2. Pass when they expect run. Run when they expect pass.
3. On third down, ask your receivers to go beyond the first down marker.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 30, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

i am a die hard skins fans but frankly, i want the giants to beat us by a bunch today b/c i don't understand greg blache's defense. he says it is working so don't change it, yeah apparently he is blind. i don't care if the defense is in the top 4 in the league but it is DECEIVING. pressuring the quaterback with your front 4 wins you game.
as for the offense, again DECEIVING.
punting problem again blame vinny and danny for that. for years they keep neglecting the REAL need of the team, which is drafting a DE or two, and bring in a veteran kicker and punter on the team.
FRANKLY I WANT THE SKINS TO LOSE BIG TO THE GIANTS, the model of how to set up a good team with GREAT management in the NFL.
this game is over skins fans.

Posted by: JeanJak | November 30, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

may the bright orange markers need to be BIGGER, like 5x bigger. . .

Posted by: skinsfan8KaboveMSL | November 30, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

Oh that's a good point. I've seen a bunch of Giant games and they are definitely lucky, even with scheduling stuff (like playing the Boyz with B Johnson).

That makes all this even worse

Posted by: messykat | November 30, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

Eli gives the ball away every so often. If he throws in the direction of someone other than Rogers, we should get some picks (and possible scoring opportunities) from the D. Our O will be lucky to get 10 points if history is any guide.

Posted by: Alan4 | November 30, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

If Zorn can learn something from Gilbride is to take sideline chances against a man D... We don't have the personnel for YAC... we're small, so you need to go to the 1st down marker for a 1st down. Novel concept

Posted by: michael_b_clegg | November 30, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

Zorn has said he doesn't think teams have figured out the Skins. I disagree... even relatively poor defenses have stopped them. I dont' put that all on the O's ability to execute.

Time to stop staying medium.

You haven't been keeping up on your reading now have you people? In an interview Zorn was appraising Campbell's progress, in the beginning of the season he stayed too long with the #1 receiver ... but now he gives up too soon on #1, #2 and goes to 3. This may be Campbell and not Zorn. The Giants do bring it ... he may not be handling the big game, the pressure from the Giant's "" well. Hopefully he will get better.

I am not blaming the offense, I am saying the defense is deceiving. Being #4 in the NLF, and being close to last in sacks says a lot.
If your offense can't score, and the defense can't put pressure on the Giants QB, how do you suppose the skins defense will try not to stop them now we are down 7-0 barely 5 minutes into the game? By BLITZING. And if you defense couldn't stop them with 7 defensive backs, you think you will by leaving your defensive backs one on one?
True the offense has to do their part too, but this defense has yet to stop anyone when they have to too.
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIP

O.K., go ahead and hate me, but:

I don't think Sean Taylor should be in the Ring of Fame. He was one helluva player and indeed his death was tragic, but that shouldn't automatically have you name placed in the Ring because you are a sentimental favorite. Place his number on jersies and paint his name and number on the field. Even place a memorial plaque in a prominent place in the stadium for all to see. The skins have to take some shots on early downs. Keep CP involved, and let's get a score

The reason Sean is in the ring of fame is that the Danny was knocked cold with how much money they made off of ST jerseys after his death. They decided to prime that pump one more time by the ring of fame stunt to generate sales again...

The defense isn't perfect, but the glaring problems are on OFFENSE. No team has scored more than 24 points on us this year (and we won both of those games). In the losses, the winning teams scored 23, 19, 16, and 14 points.

Yeah, the pass rush could be better. But if the offense ends at least three drives per game in touchdowns, 3 losses become wins. I BLAME THE OFFENSE.

Posted by: Alan4 | November 30, 2008 1:40 PM | Report abuse

Looks like I spoke to soon. Look for them to have to punt now. This game is going south. With the 1st Quarter over it looks like this is going to get ugly.

SO MUCH FOR THIS WONDERFUL DEFENSE...
don't expect our defense to stop these giants folks. b/c they are indeed GIANTS.
i expect those giants to score on every possession, and frankly if they don't it is b/c they stop themselves and not b/c our defense had anything to do with it.

I remember the days when the skins would win games with the defense alone, with guys like dexter manly, charles mann and darryl green etc... You could always count on them to come up with a timely stop or intersection.
When was the last time the skins won a game on defense alone?
I am a die hard Skins fans, but you also have to be realistic. Being a skins fan doesn't mean you have to be blind to the THE OBVIOUS PROBLEMS OF THE TEAM.
you have a defense who can't stop ANYONE when they have to, and that to me is a BIGGER problem than an offense who can't score.
If suddenly the Skins offense has discovered the ability to score on these Giants for the remainder of the game, at one point or another our defense will have to stop the Giants from scoring.
Again frankly, I have the feeling if these Giants don't score a TD it is b/c of mistakes they make more so than our defense stopping them.

Posted by: JeanJak | November 30, 2008 2:05 PM | Report abuse

can't get stops on third down... i hate that Zorn always wants the ball first, we never score on our first possession, id rather have the ball first for the second half.

Posted by: JeanJak | November 30, 2008 3:16 PM | Report abuse

I'd be curious to know how many of the (blind to reality) Skins fans still think we will make the playoffs now much less go far?
Even with our problems I honestly thought we would at least make the playoffs and lose in the 1st round. Now with the Cowgirls having overtaken us in the standings, we would be so lucky to make it to the playoffs this year because I see us going 8-8 if not 7-9 for the remainder of the season.

Posted by: JeanJak | November 30, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

NOW WE ARE PUNTING?!?! DOWN 10 POINTS WITH A DEFENSE THAT CANT STOP ANYONE??!?!
CAN THIS TEAM BE ANY MORE OF A JOKE THAN THAT???
WE SO NEEDED TO LOSE THIS GAME 50-7 FOR YOU GUYS TO GET IT.
Then again it is 20-7 with a full quarter to go. I predict the final score at least will be 34-7 if not 41-7.
Guys like Antonio Pierce who couldn't wait to leave these Skins must have known something. Spagnolu, the Giants defensive coordinator who refused to talk to Snyder for the head coaching position must have known something.
What is this something? SNYDER and CERATOR are franchise killers.

Posted by: JeanJak | November 30, 2008 3:30 PM | Report abuse

and this ladies and gentlemen is the difference between a winning team (the Giants) and a losing team (duhhhh...)
you so called die-hard redskins fans can keep dreaming. until we get players to rush the passer with 4 and not with an all out blitz, until we get some receivers who can catch the ball, a backup runner for CP, a PUNTER, a kicker, a new coach, a new owner, a new GM, and move the team back to DC where they belong, we can keep dreaming of the good old days b/c we aint going nowhere for YEARS TO COME.

Wideouts dropping balls is not Campbell's fault

Posted by: kreator6996 | November 30, 2008 4:07 PM | Report abuse

Jason Campbell is the problem. He sucks. Zorn is going to ride him all the way to a losing season. Just like Gibbs would have done last year if he didn't get hurt. Why does everyone think that he is so great? Eli Manning is a real quarterback.

Jason Campbell can only throw the ball at his recievers feet. Make Clinton Portis the quarterback.
