Report: Donovan McNabb likes Terrell Owens for Redskins

ESPN is reporting this morning that Donovan McNabb has encouraged the Redskins to pursue wide receiver Terrell Owens.

It's difficult to know how much stock to put into this report. While it could be true that McNabb would like to again play with Owens, it's very doubtful the Redskins are making their personnel decisions based on the desires of their players. There's been a significant culture change at Redskins Park and nothing about the way Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan have gone about their business leads us to believe that they're regularly checking the "Suggestion Box" in the locker room.

There was certainly a time not long ago when several players had the ear of the owner and front office, but since the 2010 turnover, players have been as much in the dark about the Redskins' planning as fans.

While we do believe the team is open to adding another offensive weapon to help McNabb, it is not believed that the Redskins have had any interest or contact with Owens thus far in free agency.

We do know that the once-fractured McNabb-Owens relationship has been repaired in the years since the controversial wide receiver left Philadelphia. And we do have reason to believe that Owens would like to play in Washington -- in fact, with barely a nibble so far during free agency, he probably can't be too picky.

The two recently filmed a "Pros vs. Joes" episode together for Spike, in which they played on the same basketball team.

Nate, I am with you. I have always liked McNabb -- all the more because of the crap he has been taking since day 1 up in Philly. Totally undeserved by him.

Posted by: manlius1 | April 20, 2010 10:57 AM | Report abuse

Same here, it has mystified me as much as the double move confuses dirty 30 and CR22 why McNabb was never embraced in Philly. All he did was take them from perennial losers to year in and year out contenders and went to 5 NFC Championships and a Super Bowl. If he'd have done that here he would be worshiped as a deity.

While I have ZERO interest in the Redskins getting T.O. I do have to openly admit it would be an unbelievably sweet "F*CK YOU!" to the Eagles AND the Cowpies for us to win the Super Bowl this year with McNabb and T.O. on offense. Every football fan could only dream of sticking it to not one, but TWO division rivals in one fell swoop.

Ah, but a man can dream...

Funny story....Rich Eisen was doing an interview with McNabb right after McNabb's press conference. Eisen said to McNabb
"I understand there is an available veteran WR out there who you have played with...." You could see McNabb bracing for Eisen to say "TO" but instead he said "....would you be open to playing again with Kevin Curtis?" McNabb started laughing and said "of course...I would love to play with Kevin."

Repost

I will say that I have enjoyed this offseason. There has been no leaking of information. Players have been fairly quiet and upbeat. The FO is showing signs of intelligence and we have't had the typical "this is what the skins are going to do" report that always seems to turn out accurate. We, as fans, really have NO idea what is going to happen Thursday, and that is enjoyable to me. It is nice to know that our FO understands that secrecy is key to running a football team and that it is best to throw out as much information as possible regardless of its validity.

Shanny and Brucy have not done things the way I might have liked, Mcnabb wasn't ideal in my opinion and we do need more depth along the oline, but at least they have shown signs of competence and that is a nice change of pace for the Skins... Plus I haven't heard a thing from Danny Boy in a good couple of months and thats always a plus.

".....they're regularly checking the "Suggestion Box" in the locker room."

They're better off trading a valued player for a pick that becomes a receiver bringing T.O. in.

T.O. has become the league's pariah.

He's like thsoe baseball/NBA guys like Milton Bradley who've played for just about every team there's except the ones with common damn sense.

Agreed...but couldn't you just see the meltdown in Philly if they saw McNabb AND T.O. hoist the trophy in another uniform? And can't you just see paramedics looking to revive Jerry Jones as he watches the Redskins win the Super Bowl in his precious shrine to himself he calls a stadium? And with his precious T.O. grinning in burgundy and gold while holding up a Lombardi over that swastika--I mean, star at midfield? I mean, that's bragging rights over Eagles and Cowpie fans for at least the next 5-7 years...

Posted by: brownwood26 | April 20, 2010 11:14 AM | Report abuse

this is win-now thinking, which I understand coming from McNabb in the twilight of his career.

but after running the numbers through Cow Sense herd management software (a "flexible, valuable beef management tool" that includes "real time decision aids" for "chute side sorting")... I'm hoping Shananan elects to send TO down the side chute.

Man I don't give a damn if they had Rae Carruth on the squad at WR, Ryan Leaf at QB and Lawrence Phillips at RB and won a super bowl.

Dude! They won the super bowl! What does it matter what players were on the team when they did it?

Team first, player second.

Anyway, first things first. Draft it Thurs. 'Skins need to be more concerned with building a team that can compete for the division, never mind a super bowl...

Guess McNabb wasn't too impressed with what he saw of the WR's during minicamp if he's calling for T.O.

T.O. is a circus sideshow and Javon Walker can't play a lick, but Kevin Curtis is a nice player and would be a reasonable pick-up to add depth and to use special teams at what would probably be a reasonable price. I think he is worth a look.

My Super Bowl wet dream aside, this team needs to get younger. They made their bed with the clusterf*ck of 2nd rounders in '08 and they need to see what they have in those guys before going out and getting an old-ass WR like T.O. A one-and-done with Owens does nothing for the long term.

Oh jeez, this would be a risky move; however, Donovan DID have his best year with T.O. on the roster, and we haven't had an elite receiver (at least to my knowledge) since Gary Clark. Can we pay him on a weekly basis? If Coach Shanahan could somehow bring in the Inquisition and go medieval on T.O.'s ego without any dramatic reactions, then I would love to see T.O. here.

It is important to note that Shanahan would be the first Super Bowl-winning coach T.O. would work with since his rookie year with the 49ers under Seifert. I think Shanahan would immediately command respect from T.O.

More on Curtis -- he is 31 and was a teammate of Cooley's in college. He is a solid possession receiver who has speed. He was a 1,000 yard receiver three seasons ago ('07) in Philly (he was injured last year and only got into 3 games). Before the draft in 2003, he ran a 4.21 and 4.35 in the 40 and scored a 48 out of 50 on the Wonderlic. Sure he is older and slower now, but he still would be fast even if he has lost half a step.

From the autobiography "TO":

(After McNabb threw a short incomplete pass)

Owens wrote that he said, "I was open. Dude, you missed me."

McNabb's reply, according to Owens, "Shut the [bleep] up."

Then it dawned on Owens, maybe McNabb doesn't want to share the spotlight - gasp!, and he concluded that the best course of action was to complain and whine in every way his 8th grade mind could imagine - amounting to 2, maybe 3 different ways

Week 4 of the NFL season.

9:45AM Monday morning.

We are reporting live here from the Capitol building in downtown Washington DC where disgruntled Washington Redskins wide receiver, Terrell Owens has been protesting his roll in the offense by doing sit-ups since 7AM. He has claimed he will continue to do them until either his role is increased or the team gives him a contract extension. More to come on this developing story....

McNabb's reply, according to Owens, "Shut the [bleep] up."

Owens wrote that he was deeply offended by what McNabb said. "I felt like he had no right to talk to me that way," Owens writes. "After what happened on the play and in the huddle, I began to think that maybe he didn't want a co-host and maybe he didn't like me getting more attention."///

From ESPN. Anyway, this is why a) you want McNabb in the huddle as your QB b) TO is an overgrown 8th grader with zero understanding of the game's dymanics who should be completely avoided.

I found the Gruden QB camp clips very entertaining. Of the four QBs, Clausen struck me as the least impressive. I can see where McShay gets "immature" with him -- not in a horrible way, but just younger and less polished than the other three. McCoy was solid, but in terms of the interview aspect of the different QBs, I thought Tebow did the best, with Bradford a close second. Gruden has plenty of moxie and Tebow somehow managed to match him without being cocky or off-putting. That was pretty impressive, in my book. Not sure that means he should go above those other guys, but it is noteworthy.

Lions' coaches hint Suh will be their pick
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 20, 2010 8:26 AM ET
Although the Lions said last week that they haven't yet reached a consensus on what they're going to do with the second pick in Thursday's draft, the coaching staff is hinting that Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh will be the choice.

About 1,500 fans showed up Monday to a pre-draft party for season-ticket holders at Ford Field, and after hearing them chant Suh's name, head coach Jim Schwartz told them they'd be happy on Thursday night.

"Let me say this, the draft board has been pretty solidly set," Schwartz said. "We are going to go over some mock-draft scenarios over the next couple days and cover all of our options. There are a lot of different ways we can go, but you won't be disappointed."

None of the Lions' coaches would come right out and say that Suh is atop their draft board, but Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham joked about his wife telling him they needed Suh, and even Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said he'd be fine with taking Suh instead of bolstering the offensive line.

"When we're killing the other team's quarterback," Linehan said. "I'm going to be happy."

Did you know that they both run a basketall camp together ask the media about this. We have a verteran coaching staff and verteran QB and players. This only helps. Name one person W/R out there who can help us right this minute more than TO. This is the NFL winning solves everything and the time is NOW.

I get what you're saying, just don't agree. It's not like we're talking about getting Big Ben here, TO maybe a lot of things but he's not a reprehensible human being. He's certainly egotistical and probably nucking futs on a lot of levels, but I wouldn't go as far as feel the need to take a "moral stand" if my team signed him.

I don't want TO at all (except maybe on my Madden team), but it's a little overboard to threaten to quit on the Skins if they were to sign him. I mean, they signed LJ a few weeks back...if that doesn't send you sprinting for the Ravens I don't know how TO is the one that puts you over the edge!

McNabb must not have seen what he wanted to see during mini-camp in reference to the WR's if he's thinking like this. We need some players who can score so bad that we're considering this...without draft pick's, options are limited. Shanny and Bruce have been tight with info. but they are clearly in "win now" mode and not rebuild....signing vets etc..so we might give T.O. a look with a short leash...The comment made earlier about stickin it to the cowboys/eagles was profound...those 4 games would be highly watched nationally televised games...Danny Boy would love that...quietly, me too...lol

Posted by: skinswest | April 20, 2010 12:31 PM | Report abuse

Dude is just looking for a paycheck -- or at least some bargaining leverage for possible contract discussions with another team. Either way, the Redskins don't need any more three-ringed circus sideshows to contend with -- beyond AH92, CP26 and a few others. Let him look elsewhere.

Another point, for what it's worth -- if McNabb were really serious about working with TO, we wouldn't be reading about it here. DM5 may just be letting it be known that he put a word in -- but I seriously doubt that he would be seriously interested in seeing a deal done with TO.

Fortunately, the not-so selective leaking of team interests and bargaining positions appears to have left the building -- and perhaps only coincidentally, about the same time as Vinny Bug-eyes.

deisel-

The time is now?

Really? Where do you see this team finishing this year? Even with Mcnabb and TO, I still have a hard time seeing us being anything better than 10-6, getting to the 2nd round of the playoffs and falling short (in the absolute BEST case) ie exactly where we were like 2 years ago.... only older and without any young talent. This is a not a superbowl caliber team and more likely its not even a playoff caliber team (even with TO).

Owens is, what, 34 years old. Slowing down and has never had great hands. His attitude is negative and is not something you want rubbing off on young players (not that we have a lot but we do have some). He is not going to come in and have a 1,000 yard season and he isn't that dominant #1 we so desperately need.

I agree he is the best option available, but this team, again, is not just a wr away from competing, and I don't think its really worth it to go out and sign TO for 1 year of service when all it will do is make us just a little bit more competive at best. Look at Buffalo, how good was he for them and their terrible Oline? He wasn't bad, but he certainly was not a difference maker.

Whereas it might not be an 'indictment' of their talents, the fact is three of our four wide receivers have yet to show us what they got.

And as for Moss, well, a big corner up in his face makes him that much less of a threat.

But there are other veteren, polished receivers out there to be had, and T.O. isn't the only one there is.

I'd also say I bet we see a bevy of undrafted receivers in camp getting as much attention as the Class of '08

After all, there are well-known, low drafted wideouts--Colston/Garcon/Austin/V Jackson--who've come into the league and done well while our boys have sputtered on the bench.

They've all had better QB play, offensive line play, real coaching, and a competent front office which gave them stability.

Can't say ANY of those things about the Redskins -- until now.

Let's see how Kelly, Thomas, and Mitchell do with improved QB play, a offensive line operating under a different scheme, and better coaching as a whole before we write them off.

Say What??? McNabb wants T.O.??? Both McNabb and T.O. know that time is running out - they want to win and win right now. McNabb knows that he has no shot if his targets are going to be Moss, Thomas and Kelly. Go get it done Allen. Do it before the draft. 2 year deal. Thomas and Kelly will have no choice but to raise their game or they won't see the field. Shanny knows he needs a legit wr in order for his offense to have any juice. Skins will be in a lot of shoot-outs this year cause our defense will stink. Don't treat McNabb like he's Campbell, give him some legit targets.

Here is WR that we can get....size, strength, maturity, and a good age! Restricted Free Agent. I am sure something can be worked out with SD as they can't keep everybody they want.

I voted yes and hopefully the Skins can't get rid of Haynesworth. TO/Haynesworth/Portis/Larry Johnson

that team will be a trainwreck and I cant wait to see it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This move would surely free up Moss! Yeah, you maynot like it but they ... McNabb, T.O and CP have chips on there shoulders. Watch out this could be a good playoff team.

Absolutely NO TO to DC!!!!!

Any goodwill that the new regime has built up would be totally destroyed with an Owens to D.C. move. It would be a "win now" strategy and not a strategy where a team can have sustained success.

Put it this way, wouldn't you want joy 24/7 in your life or are you looking for a crack rock to get you high for a short period of your time? Terrell Owens is that crack rock. As Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel once said, "Don't do it!"

If the Skins sign T.O., they will have to keep rebuilding because he implodes every team he plays for. BAD MOVE!

I got it, the Skins can sign Jerry Rice! Although he's 100 years old he can still play. NOT!! To even consider signing T.O. is ridiculous.

I think Mr. McNabb needs to concentrate on playing "winning" football and let the G.M. worry about personnel decisions.

I say get him, assuming the price is right. Kelly and Thomas are big guys who need some coaching on how to use their bodies to gain position. Santana can't help them with that, but TO has made a living off it. Playing with him could be the boost those two guys need.

PLEASE sign him. Which will go right up there with the outcomes of Gibbs II ($10 mill per year for 3 playoff games, a traded HOF CB, Archetela, 3 picks for Jason, 2-3 picks for washed up Brunell, Landry, and Suisham) - all picked by St Joe and all poor picks leading to last years 0-6 NFC East record; Deion and Bruce (8-8); Fat Albert (4-12); Jason Taylor (missed playoffs); Sonny J from Philly (no Lombardi trophies or SB's that he played in); Alvin Harper, James Washington, Galbreath (just lost here); Dana Stubblefield (see prior comment); Spurrier, Marty and soon to be Shanny without Elway (all ost), and soon to be McNabb (see Sonny)...

Stop it with the Redskins and the superbowl allready, Geesh! Be real and be patient! Now, back to reality. I know, we are the champions of the off season. BTW, F-Dallas!

Get McNabb outta town and fast! If it walks like a duck then it is! Does he think he's as stupid as Chris Webber ?

I hated Webber - the Bullets gave up 3 number 1 and Tom Gugliotta for that clown. Now McNabb - for whom I had -operative word is "had" respect for is gone. Webber wanted Sprewell and McNabb wants TO. HE is not a GM - ship him out now and let's recoup our losses.

Did you see the schedule?? Skins will be lucky to be 8-8 this year.. McNabb probably can't last 16 games.. IF T.O. comes it will be a disaster because he will only cause disruption in the locker room.. Damm we get rid of Campbell and this team is still be a mess!!! Skins need a LT and a franchise QB.. don't think about just this year but the next FIVE!!! Build a championship team.. and you don't do that by signing other teams rejects...

I love the Skins' however my loyalty will go to Toledo if we sign this idiot T.O.

And people think the Redskins will be different under Allen & Shanahan. Why not sign Deion Sanders and Bruce Smith again? They are a jersey merchandiser, not a football team. Who is going to do the blocking?

I am from Washington D.C. and live now in Arizona. I love my Skins always, win or losing. That's a true fan. Now I don't like how the Skins are being handled. I hope Mr. Shanahan will do a great job with the Redskins. I didn't want Mcnabb as quarterback but who am I but a now out-of-state fan, but I have to put my foot down and say Hell No to T.O. That man is a train wreck. He is a good player when he wants to be and that's rare. He is a troubled man and doesn't follow instuctions too well. He starts on a team ok then he goes off on his own without being that team player. The Skins maybe desparate to win games, but please don't add the spoiled troubled child to the mix. I mean look what good teams he has been on and what a mess he made of himself on them and remember he was a........Cowboy! Come On, "Really, T.O. a Red skin?" No way Mr. Shanahan! I don't care if he could promise to take us all the way to a Super Bowl, Mr. T.O. has major issues! Go Skins, I love You!

Tell 'em to throw in Michael Westbrook and we've got a deal!!! What is it about DC that guys show up and think they can run the team? Does Snyder come off as that much of a simpleton when they meet him? Well, on second thought, based on his past performance it's not that much of a stretch. Maybe McNabb is channeling Al Davis.

Barno1- I can be positive, when there is something to be positive about. There has been nothing positive about the Redskins since Mr. Cooke died and boy wonder took over. I've been a fan for a very long time, but I don't choose to live in a fantasy world. Enjoy your stay there though.

Please - no more quick fixes! I don't think that Owens is even that.
This is what I saw on another site

"Owens endured a disappointing 2009 in Buffalo, where he caught just 55 passes for 829 yards and five touchdowns -- the lowest numbers he'd posted since an injury-plagued 2005 with the Eagles. Of course, in 2004, Owens posted 1,200 yards receiving and 14 TDs as he and McNabb combined to lead Philadelphia to an AFC championship and a Super Bowl appearance.

The two battled on and off the field, though, during Owens' time in Philly. T.O.'s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, insisted Tuesday that the past is no longer an issue.

He told Sportscenter that the pair are "buddies again."
Yeah- what - butt buddies?

I guess Rosenhaus would say that as he is seeking money for his aging clown. As someone else stated "it sounds so stupid that the Skins' may do it!" If McNabb wants this idiot to ruin the franchise as I said above please get him out of DC and let's just go with Campbell again.
