Multiple reports say Shanahan deal done

(Updated at 9:06 p.m.)

There now are multiple reports that Mike Shanahan has reached an agreement to coach the Washington Redskins. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Shanahan and team owner Daniel M. Snyder posed together for a picture at Redskins Park before signing a five-year contract and leaving for a celebratory dinner. The Denver Post is reporting the deal is expected to be worth around the $7 million per season he made in 2008, his final season with the Broncos.

However, we have been unable to confirm the reports at this time.

Interesting piece on what we can expect from Shanny by Peter King at SI

Basically, Campbell's gone and we can expect a Second Round QB like McCoy. Portis stays. We switch to a 3-4.

I find the switch to 3-4 hard to believe. I don't think we have stout enough DE's to pull it off. But what do I know? I thought we'd be in the NFC Championship at the beginning of the year.

Welcome aboard, coach shanny (unofficially).

Jason Campbell gained a few points in my book tonight by putting Portis on blast. We need to see more of him stepping up like that. (and maybe a few mor TDs as well)

If that is what Peter King is reporting, then we are running a 4-3, Jason at QB and Clinton is gone

Peter King is an idiot. In the above article he mentioned Bradford's "elbow surgery" (it was his shoulder), thinks Campbell will be gone but mentions a couple paragraphs later how "Shanahan handed over the reins of the team to Brian Griese and Jake Plummer despite not being belles of the ball." Doesn't that somewhat describe JC? Dude's all over the place.

Posted by: RomoLongballs | January 5, 2010 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Great news regarding Shanahan. Great to see JC fight back, and just straight lay someone out. It is a new day indeed.

Great match up in tonight's ball game. Buluga against Morgan. Should be fun.

here is the question I would have where would people put Campbell when compared to Grease Man II, and Jake the Snake? I would say he is better than Griese not sure about Jake.

A deal in principle? Doesn't that first require that Snyder has principles?

Shanny better get Lavar's lawyer to read the small print.

Posted by: Oogalaboogala | January 5, 2010 8:35 PM | Report abuse

anyone else think Portis is saying one thing but facilitating another? What I mean is, on the on hand he is say that Shmike Shmanahan is a good coach and good fit here and would like to play for him again, but on the other he is kind of bashing his team and it's QB at a time when there will already be plenty of changes, being disgruntled or being perceived as a locker room cancer could get you a ticket out more easily.

Maybe he does not want to play for Shmike Shmanahan, but also does not want to seem like he doesn't.

Just a thought.

Posted by: rickmort | January 5, 2010 8:35 PM | Report abuse

If Okung isn't there, I'd have no trouble seeing them take Bruce Campbell. Some concerns, but huge upside.

Hit refresh, gang. Report out of Denver is premature.

Posted by: TheCindy | January 5, 2010 8:38 PM | Report abuse

ITS FALSE !!!

Not suprising as I asked myself how someoen from Denver Post know what is going on in DC. I'm happy we got rid of all those Seattle guys in Zorn, Largent, and Holmgren, but I now think we are inheriting a new family in Denver. I hate this sh*t...

Posted by: ATLredskin | January 5, 2010 8:39 PM | Report abuse

Possibly the worst RI update I've ever read, lol. "Agreement in principle" MEANS that there is still a contract to be finalized. The report isn't premature at all - it's accurate. Sounds like the WaPo is just sore because it got scooped.

Posted by: cali_snowboarder | January 5, 2010 8:39 PM | Report abuse

Alex, Campbell clearly better than Griese, who was also pretty tough. Jake? (scratching chin) Dunno if JC could be that good of a runner even if he was given free rein to do so. My memory is fuzzy, but wasn't Plummer an INT machine with the Cards? He seemed unpredictable and unreliable, but had so much potential. Jury's still out for me.

Colt reminds me more of Plummer than JC does (minus the scrambing)

I mentioned McCoy as being a strong possibility for the skins considering where the value is at high in the draft. I was roundly shot down. DT while not the most pressing need, is a need this year. I would not be surprised if McCoy drops to #4, that the Skins pick him (all things considered at this point).

tried to post this to the theismann gibbs post, but wapo.com sucks right now:
joe gibbs does not get a free pass by me for his 2.0 stint. he played favorites and created the environment for which clinton portis can totally verbally abuse any coach that was thrown into the situation (ie jim zorn). i don't care if he (gibbs) is a saint, i don't care if he has won super bowls before (ancient history), he ultimately validated redskins failure by letting cerrato stay on staff and make decisions, something that never should have happened in gibbs 2.0. the clinton portis trade was garbage, we gave up way too much for not that much in return. not to mention mark brunel, adam archuletta, and brandon lloyd. granted his drafts were decent, landry and taylor were a scary tandem, but still, he let his overpaid, big ego players runs the show, gibbs had no control, he was just lucky. gibbs, ultimately, didn't stabilize anything, in fact once he left, it was destined to blow up and fall apart anyways. we (logical people) were just waiting for it to happen. 8-8 forever.

Portis is an idiot to not be kissing ass right now. He's way past his prime as a back, he should be praying to be held on by a team that can pay him - and in a potentially uncapped season?? RB has been considered a strength for awhile, now all of a sudden it's a glaring need. I'd be OK with Portis returning with a young runner in a RB by committee situation - but not after his bridge burning today. Dumb move on his part.

Slow clap for Clinton Portis. I think Jason will be back next year, because Shanahan and Shanahan junior can make something of him. Grab OL in the first, a RB in the 2nd and get this thing going.

I want Jason on my team, after that beating he took by the Giants and just got back up again and again, he won me over.THATS LEADERSHIP, not skipping practice because the owner massages your feet in a hot tub, and probably takes body shots off you.

Jason,London,Devin,Fred,Chris,Brian and Rocky back for 2010.

After 7 coaches in 10 years, perhaps it's not the front office that needs the new name.

Any other name would hint that we've decided to be anything but medium.

I'm telling you the biggest problem is not Clinton Portis. It's Daniel Snyder's kissing Portis' a$$. That is what created the problem in the first place, and it should never, ever happen on a professional football team. Snyder needs to learn how to get the hell out of the way! The new coach needs to have the authority to treat every player the same way. If Snyder is going to treat one player better than the rest (name him the unofficial general manager), he is just asking for this to happen. Go JC!

IF I HAD TO PICK ONE I WOULD PICK CAMPBELL, but i think they should both be here next year.

campbell is 10th in comp % while being sacked the 3rd most times. he's 14th in yards and 15th in QB rating. we had no line and no running game.

start taking off HOFers like Favre, Manning, etc, Campbell starts moving into top 10 stats across the board.

we need Portis too, everyone hates their co-workers right before vacation, plenty of time to cool down and let the new coaching staff handle the inter-personal B.S.

if we draft a QB it should be 2nd stringer, if we draft a RB it should be a 2nd stringer

You're not even close. What created the problem in the first place was when Daniel's mother and father decided to have a child. If they had decided "no kids for us" then Daniel would never have been born and the Redskins would be owned by someone else and all would be perfect in the world.

Schefter also reporting Lil Shanny is officially the OC.

From what I've heard about him up here, I'm pretty excited. Too bad I haven't seen any Texans games this year, what kind of offense does he run? How suited to this offense is JC?

Posted by: RomoLongballs | January 5, 2010 9:31 PM | Report abuse

OMG it must be true Danny & Shanny just walked into Tijuana Flats Burrito Co for a celebratory burrito

Campbell looks good for 2 TD passes a game, now that the redshirts are contributing

he's not a superstar, but he is a known quantity and capable of winning.

rumor has it that having a system helps, having a good line helps, having some RB's helps

Say what you want about JLC but he was right about Shanahan all along. And first to properly count Gruden out.

I was always a JLC fan, and probably one of his last supporter. I got heat from some of the most loyal hamsters for it too.

I had Schaub in FF so I 'net watched a lot of their games. Its a WCO hybrid that goes down the field quite a bit to WR and TE. They ran a RB by committee, especially after Slaton started laying the ball on the carpet every 5th carry. Very similar to Denver... Kubiak and Kyle ran Dad's offense in Houston.

My guess is that they beef the line somehow, get a speed back, lightly pencil in JC but give CB5 a real shot and fair look. I'm not convinced they are gonna go Clausen/Bradford.

Why does ESPN and the Denver paper have better reporting and sharper sources in Washington than the Washington paper. Seriously. Why is the Post reporting on reports in our area instead of first hand info. This is their domain or so I thought.

Ok, you heard it here first: Shanahan is gonna retain Buges as Oline coach.

1) he is a great coach
2) he is a bridge to the redskins of yore

BS. Portis is paid (better than anyone else on the offense) to be a member of this team. He hasn't delivered what he's paid for. He's done as a RB and instead of owning up to his own failings is blaming everyone else on the team -- the coaches, the O line, and now the QB. He's trash.

"I mentioned McCoy as being a strong possibility for the skins considering where the value is at high in the draft. I was roundly shot down."

I would expect the Skins to trade down in the draft and get a couple more picks. They could demand A LOT for that pick and this is a DEEP OT draft as well as QB.

Personally, that's what I would do.

I was a solid Campbell basher...thought we should get rid of him.

He showed some gonads today. At some point you have to fight back. Campbell showed me something today. I say he's earned a 1 year deal...now if can lead that 4th quarter comeback...

The dude is a straight phukboy. All he does is talk sh!t like he knows something everyone can only hope to know. Point out a bunch of sh!t facts and ignore the positive facts. I know, lets completely crap on the fact that ANY coaching hire is an upgrade. Not to mention the man has won a Superbowl and is bringing in a young, up and coming OC AND he may have the power to stuff Danny in a locker for a while. Like I said, a tool.

Can you tell me the last time anyone was able to trade down from pick number four, or any of the top four picks? It just doesn't happen. We earned pick #4. It's ours. And no one else wants it.

he's a good RB, if you can't see that you're blind. Maybe he is done, but he was on his way to another 1000 yd season and has done what VERY few others have done in this league, and that's a FACT, not an opinion.
