Rex Grossman to start over Donovan McNabb

By Barry Svrluga

The Redskins are preparing to start Rex Grossman over Donovan McNabb at quarterback Sunday in Dallas, according to two people close to the situation. The news was first reported by Kelli Johnson of CSN Washington.

Grossman has played in only one game this season - the Oct. 31 loss at Detroit in which Coach Mike Shanahan benched McNabb with one minute, 50 seconds remaining and inserted Grossman to run the two-minute offense. The move led to a tumultuous bye week for both McNabb and Shanahan, with national speculation about their relationship and the coaching staff's belief in McNabb's ability to run the offense.

On Nov. 15, however, the Redskins announced they had signed McNabb to a contract extension. The only guarantee, though, was that McNabb would earn $3.5 million more.

The move for the Cowboys game will certainly lead to speculation that Washington will cut McNabb after the season, particularly because both McNabb and Shanahan said McNabb is healthy this week. He has participated fully in practice, according to official injury reports submitted by the team.

On Wednesday, though, Shanahan declined to name McNabb as his starter.

"I like people getting prepared for a lot of different people," Shanahan said then. "Even though they say it's a meaningless game, it's not meaningless to us. We've got a big game. We'll get a lot of preparation. You guys will have to show up to view all of the starters."

McNabb said Wednesday he had not been told he would be replaced, and that he would expect to be told of such a move in advance.

"I would have hoped so," McNabb said. "That's professionalism and communication."

But according to the source, word started circulating through the organization Thursday night that Grossman would start. Grossman's only appearance was in that Detroit game, and on his first play he was sacked and fumbled - a fumble that was returned by the Lions for a touchdown. He is 4 of 7 for 44 yards on the season, and this will be his first start since 2008, his last season with Chicago.

McNabb is in the midst of what is, statistically, his worst season as a starter. His passer rating of 77.1 ranks 25th in the league and is a career-low, and he has thrown a career-high 15 interceptions.

While I'm predicting disaster... What happens if Grossman goes out and has a pretty good game (which he is capable of doing)?

I wonder if McNabb is wishing he'd signed with the Raiders now? Hard to believe that team is less dysfunctional than ours!

FIRST(I think!) Anyway if i'm McNabb i am outta here this is going to be a first class slaughter in Dallas this sunday. The O-line is a joke and with Grossman's lack of mobility he will be a sitting duck for the Cowgirl's pass rush.

wow! just wow!!! I hate to say I told you so but I told you guys that Shan as coach was a bad move. Going with the human turnover machine is proof of that.

Looks like that 25th ranking finally caught up to McNabb, well that or the skipped ball and missing of wide open receivers.

Welcome to the Big Top fellas, like a train wreck, can help but stare and laugh, even though its uncomfortable.

This is just nuts. Even MC5's worst statistical year is better than the best case performance from Rex "cut loose after "leading" his team to the Super Bowl" Grossman. There must be something in the water out in Ashburn. A coach with a solid record over decades as an assistant and head coach is suddenly making the kinds of whimsical nonsensical decisions this organization has become famous for over the last dozen years.

ha, I mean, wow...oh well I guess...right...so obviously this lends itself to the belief that McNabb will be cut in the offseason....burned a 2nd/4th up for a 1 season rental...when VC did this with JTaylor, he was eviscerated...now BA/MS have done the very same thing...how did it get this bad....

Redskins management: the Christmas gift that keeps on giving! No doubt Grossman will be signed to a multi-year, guaranteed deal before Sunday, then he'll go out and stink up the place.

Johnny, if that's true sign me up for therapy sessions ASAP...nothing Zorn could do would test my fanhood quite like seeing The Human Turnover start against our hated division rival...

I liked Zorn, and I think he would have improved over time. Ditto for Campbell.

I fear Shanahan and McNabb have peaked already.

Not sure what the point of this is, other than deliberately tanking the season for a higher draft pick.

He's certainly not increasing DMs trade value.

You've got a better chance of getting the tip of your dick struck by lightning indoors.

Alan4, I was thinking the same thing the other day...Oakland is running the ball with authority and has a couple nice, young WRs. No doubt he'd be playing every bit as well as JC...and he'd have a better shot at the playoffs. FML...

The only reason a holdout is a red flag is it shows he's not much of a team player.

Remember: to us, pro football is a game.

The players see it as a business.

Football is their job.

And if on your job, if you feel that you aren't being paid according to what you deliver, you either demand a raise or seek new employment.

In Jackson's case, he did both.

But because of the contractual nature of pro football, couldn't just 'quit' THE chargers and go sell his services to the highest bidder.

Pro sports, remember, is essentially a socialist construct where wages are determined by a market set by the owners, not the players.

Owners, like the chargers, often block a player's mvement to another bidder out of spite.

So a player must sit out to be heard.

And I don't blame any man who sits out to demand to be paid what he feels he's worth.

You're advertising the obvious: we haven't or don't have the kind of talent other teams covet.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. When we did lose men off our practice squad guys were whining "they should have been on our roster." When we don't lose them guys are whining "our practice squad sucks."

Simple fact for simpletons: It's working fine. The only guys we've lost off our practice squad have been promoted to our roster, and there have been a bunch of them. Just the way you want it. Stop whining, Moe and RSH.

McNabb is not going to be here next year. We have the option to cut him but I'm hoping we can make a trade to somebody for a 2nd rounder (Ariz or Cle). It's not a stretch for them to want to see some game action from our potential starting qb next year. Over hauling this team is not going to be a quick fix. Lots of people complained when we first got McNabb that we should have been rebuilding instead. Now those same people are complaining when the needed plan is being executed.

RI mantra: "Kick the tires. Let's put some of the scrubs in. Let's see what they got. Gotta know what they have for next year." Then you start Rex Grossman and the mantra changes.

Schizophrenia. The right head doesn't know what the left head is saying.

I'm not believe the rumor, anyway, until Lindsey Czarniak says it's true.

Posted by: beep-beep | December 17, 2010 11:02 AM | Report abuse

Don't we need to see if Grossman has learned anything since the Bears? Give the guy a game or two, the season is gone and if we lose we improve our draft position. The other "second teamers" are playing. Why wouldn't they do the same for QB? Seems like a rational move that doesn't affect McNabb's status in the least.

Reports are that the Skins locker room is divided and those in support of McNabb are "highly upset" While I dont ever want to lose to Dallas I wouldt not be surprised if upset players lay down..look for a disaster of a game not only because of Grossy but because of a pending player protest. Shanahan might be planing not only Mcnabb's exit strategy but his own as well.

If only it were that simple... there's no value in humiliating the QB you traded 2 picks to get, and causing turmoil in the locker room.

The Skins would have a hard enough time with the Cowpies WITHOUT all the manufactured distractions and disorganization on display this week.

I'm beginning to see why Shanahan's teams tend to collape at the end of the season.

And get JArmon and Paulson in the mix.

This is incredible. How do you re-sign a guy and then bench him?

Is he really playing that badly? It's hard to tell on TV because you can't see the receivers running their routes.

So the Redskins can now add QB to the long list of urgent needs. Oh, if only I could beocme a Ravens fan.

The only hope for the Skins is if Snyder sold the team. And that's not going to happen.

Why would there be speculation they will cut McNabb? The truth is McNabb is not a fit for the ShanFam so move on and get young. The Skins will be able to get something even if it is a 4th rounder for him in trade and that is what they will do. This game is meaningless, except to us fans. In a one game situation Rex has as much chance of winning as McNabb.

Now beat the Cowboys!!!

Rex Grossman to start over Donovan McNabb Sunday

The Shanahans have seen what a lot of folks in this forum don't: that even when the blocking has been there, McNabb's inaccuracy issues and missing open receivers is too much to bear.

Nothing against McNabb, mind you, but I think he and the AZ Cardinals are a much better fit than he and the redskins.

Right Diesel - except we bench a struggling QB for the human turnover machine. It is one of the few parts of our roster where we ABSOLUTELY know the backup is more awful than the starter no matter how badly the starter plays. In order to know of the 2nd teamers can play with our 1st, we need to let our 1st team QB play, not "sexy" rexy.

The Redskins are the worst-run organization in professional sports.

Benching McNabb is a lose-lose proposition. You gave up draft picks to get him, then you signed him to a huge multi-year deal, so his trade value is now nill. You're now stuck with him, and a QB controversy, for a couple years at least.

This franchise is done.

For that money give me C Ryan Kalil, RT Ryan Harris, & OLB Tamba Hali.

What is the big dill if McNabb doesn't comeback next year? What have the Skins lost? A QB that couldn't help the team, that is all. McNabb has good career stats, but that does not help your team today. Does that mean Grossman is the answer? It does not mean yes or no. It means the skins are going to evaluate him.
Take some prozac, relax, and let the coach try to right the mess which he inherited.
By the way, if McNabb does not comeback next year, I hope he takes his cheerleader, Mike Wise, with him. Who is Mike Wise? The idiot that constantly wrote articles about signing McNabb to a long term contract when all evidence shows that McNabb was not performing as well as the coaches hoped, that he is getting old, and is on his declining years.

So they think RexG will give them a better chance to win against Dallas?? That is curious. Still think the O line is the immediate concern, but hard to fix during the season. Need to get young and fast overall. Have a stable of young running backs behind a powerful line, that will help the passing game. Win games in the 2nd half.

Posted by: Redtopper2 | December 17, 2010 11:15 AM | Report abuse

This does not mean the end of Donovan McNabb. The Skins are 5-8 and have nothing left to play for. I believe they are simply trying to see if Rex can play in this offense. Whether Donovan is back or not is totally up tho the Redskins not McNabb. They have the contract option and if they want him back he is back, pure and simple. I think it will totally depend on Grossman's performance.

If Rex has 'something' as a game manager......Say hello to Sexy Rexy.....Bye Bye McNabb...will be traded for picks.....and HELLO CAM NEWTON.....maybe Mallet...

Rex would be a cheaper option as a holdover to the next franchise QB than McNAbb will....

For the record, I don't disagree with the act of benching McNabb so much as objecting to WHO he's being benched for. If we had a young QB groomed to start evetually anyway I'd be all for this...but benching bad for worst is batsh*t crazy...

Somebody should tell Shanahan you're not supposed to pull the pin and keep the grenade in your hand. How could it not be obvious that this would screw up the locker room vibe completely? And it's not like Grossman is your go to guy next year, so why put him out there?

I venture to guess that if McNabb was playing for the Patriots this year, they'd still have a winning record. Meaning that the coaches and owner have something to do with the way the Skins are playing.

The Skins aren't going to be good until the both sides of the line improve, and that wont be for at least two years if not more. Maybe we should start Cerrato.

They keep him in there for every game to see if one game is a fluke or if he really does have a greater command of the offense. If he does, "Bye-bye, Donovan".

This is being thrown around alot.

If a QB had 22 turnovers so far this year wouldnt he be one?

McNabb 15 INTS 7 lost fumbles.

Take off the blinders people, Rex isnt the answer, we all know this, but is McNabb?

McNabb is in the midst of what is, statistically, his worst season as a starter. His passer rating of 77.1 ranks 25th in the league and is a career-low, and he has thrown a career-high 15 interceptions.
-------------
According to profootballreferece.com, Rex is sporting a career rating of 69.6, which puts him a tad below kyle boller's 71.3 and just ahead of Joey harrington's 69.4. I hear he's a great guy though!

Posted by: pundito | December 17, 2010 11:21 AM | Report abuse

Most people are predicting that Rexy will stink up the joint. But what if he has a great game? Then we have an even bigger problem on our hands. It's been pretty obvious that KShan thinks Rex executes the offense better, but going into next season with him at the helm would be pretty scary.

I predict Rex will put some good points on the board, but we will lose because of his 3 ints and 2 fumbles.

Posted by: NYPDee | December 17, 2010 11:22 AM | Report abuse

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard! What will the Redskins do if Grossman stinks it up in the first half of the game and McNabb plays great in the second half? Who thinks that Grossman will be sucessful against the Cowboys pass rush? This is Kyle Shanahan and it reminds me of Al Saunders and Todd Collins. It has no chance of working in the long term.

Not really, the rex cannon can be used for good just as it can be used for evil. He can throw 5 TDs in a game or throw 5 Ints. The problem is that both of those 2 outcomes have an equal probability.

The more I see who's lining up against starting Grossman, the more the decision makes sense. Maybe it's risky, though, with our season's success on the line. I just hope this doesn't keep us out of the playoffs. And, I hope it leads to a higher draft pick.

Posted by: beep-beep | December 17, 2010 11:13 AM

Redskins fans appear to be lining up against starting Grossman.

Cowpies fans appear quite pleased--Google it for youself.

And keep in mind, Shanahan was fired after 3 years of 0.500 ball in Denver.

But glad his decisions are making sense to you, you may not have long to admire them as a Skins coach.

mattylight & Karen-

McNabb has been terrible and deserves to see the bench but not for Rex or the 29 YR old Beck. The problem is that we should have a under 24 YR old QB on the squad that we're developing. That's the failure here, not benching McNabb in a lost season.

Shannahan's a joke. I hope that this team moves to LA. Never in my 21 years have I ever seen such a disfunctional group of managers and ownership of any organization.

I hope that Snyder sees $$$$$ signs on the West coast and we can begin a franchise here under true leadership. I live and breathe the Redskins and, seemingly, all they do is dissappoint. I'm simply calling for one of the veterans - 59, 30, 93, 45, 26, 5, etc. - to step up and make Snyder realize he's ruined this city year after year.

monk, trotter was a player, however you're basing part of your arguement on BLloyd, whom when the Redskins traded for him, the ENTIRE league laughed at VC. Mankins is one of the BEST guards in the league, and VJack is a top 10 receiver...neither of which ARE/Lloyd were when they came here...so I'm not sure how you can compare them...ARE should have been a #3 receiver, VJ is a #1.

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | December 17, 2010 10:33 AM | Report abuse

Randel El and Lloyd were signed at the same time. El was supposed to be the savior at PR, not receiver. Lloyd was brought in to be the difference maker at receiver. Noboday laughed at VC until it looked like Lloyd was a bust. Most people around the league saw his potential and how good he could be. Why is it so bad that I put Lloyd in there. Ok, he was traded, so he's a bad example because of that, but he had just as much potential at his position than all the rest.

VJax is a top 10 receiver? Maybe, maybe not. Here's a list of the best receivers in the NFL in my opinion. I don't think he's in the top 10, yet. Make some adjustments if you want to.

Andre Johnson
Larry Fitzgerald
Roddy White
Calvin Johnson
Reggie Wayne
Marquis Colston
Anquan Boldin
Sydney Rice (fully healed? we'll see)
Brandon Marshall
Hakeem Nicks
Desean Jackson
Greg Jennings
Steve Smith
Vincent Jackson
Miles Austin
Deon Branch
Santonio Holmes
Mike Wallace
TO (too good of a year, couldn't help it)
Ocho Cinco
Kenny Britt
Dwayne Bowe
Eddie Royal

Shanahan is desperate for a win since last week McNabb drove the team down the field for a quick 6 and the snap was screwed up. This is after the kicker missed 2 FG in the game. It won't matter because after half-time Rex Grossman will be either pulled or injury due to piss poor offense line and Shanahan's none working zone block scheme

Nothing against McNabb who seems like a good guy and still a decent player, but I hope this means that Shanny now realizes that he has not chance of piecing together anyhting better than a mediocre team from what he has right now. If instead, they are about to embark on a true multi-year rebuilding plan, then I am all for it. But then this offseason they should cut and/or trade EVERYONE over 30 since these guys won't be much good by the time this team is ready to contend again.

Shanny is an idiot! He needs to be fired right now! And take his fool son Kyle with him. Without Elway, Shanny is an average coach at best. This franchise needs 3 years of ACTUAL rebuilding! Enough with the shortcuts and treating draft picks like live grenades. We gave up 2 picks for a guy who won't even start against a 4-9 Cowboy team? It's Cerato all over again. Let me get this right: Terrible O-line play for 5+ years, slow, midget receivers, no legit running backs and the #31 defense, but McNabb takes the fall. Shanny is the guy who screwed up the 2 min drill at the end of each half last week, yet he got a free pass. Why? I guess it's also #5's fault last week that Gano, a joke of a kicker, missed 2 gimmee FG's and the holder couldn't handle a snap. McNabb should demand to be cut at season's end so he can get away from this stinking dumpster fire! Jason Campbell must be lol!
And Danny's tix office keeps trying to sell me club seats every year for this mess?

Diesel,

Big picture -- who is gonna want to come and play for Shanny? Guy has a God complex and isn't above alienating whoever he wants to in order to make a point. AH92 was probably deserved, albeit handled extremely poorly. McNabb hasn't had a good year, but again it isn't like he has an elite offensive line, many elite weapons, or a running game. Everyone else in the NFL realizes this...

People are watching this unfold and it looks bad on Shanahan and Shanny Jr. -- right, wrong or indifferent, it looks bad on them. If the report is correct and the locker room is divided and half the vets are pissed off, that's not a good thing.

In 5 years here, despite much of it being mediocre, Gibbs never lost the locker room. Guys always played hard for him. It's already possible Shanny has lost the locker room in 13 games...

I'll believe it when I see it.

This was meant to happen last week. It didn't. "Reliable" sources said Haynesworth would be traded mid-season, he wasn't. Just he wasn't traded during the draft, when alledged sources within the team said he would.

No one reported the imminent signing of McNabb. The sources were strangely quiet about that until it happened. No one reported problems between McNabb and our coaches until after he was benched, at which point you don't really need an inside source to work that out.

Shanahan likes to play things close to his chest. I kind of hope he is deliberately leaking false information to skrew with the press.

Glad to see the hamsters at RI are still freaking out . . . after the Detroit game I figured this year would be a slow agonizing grind so I stopped freaking out and focused on being sad and frustrated.

I actually think DM5 maybe injured and they aren't saying. He has always had some throwing issues but the number of low/missed/bounced passes this year seem higher to me. Also remember the stuff about KS pushing him to adjust mechanics - wonder if that is contributing.

All that being said if it is true that Sexy Rexy is starting well so be it. It can't be worse than it is now. I'd love to beat the Cowpaddies but right now I'm just looking for players who show up and play and push and fight and don't walk around the field like it's over.

I've decided to try and avoid freaking out in any way about this team for 2 more years. . .I give them that time to rebuild and show us something. After that I'm back to full blown freak out mode. I think this will be better for my mental and spiritual health.

Meanwhile I'll be popping xanax and singing HTTR to get me through the games.

It really isn't fair to blame McNabb for all the passes his receivers have dropped. I mean, since when is Chris Cooley a guy who drops half the balls thrown to him? That's just weird.

I know that every receiver drops passes he should catch sometimes; it's part of the game. But I have never seen anything in my life like these Redskins' receivers. Had they only muffed a normal percentage of McNabb's passes, McNabb (and the Redskins) wouldn't have had such a bad year and we'd still be in the hunt.

The Redskins are weak everywhere but linebacker and kick returner. We need literally EVERYTHING else, defensive backs, linemen on both sides of the ball, running backs, receivers, both types of kickers, and a good quarterback.

If only we had signed Michael Vick when he came to us first after his release from prison. Everything would be different now.

This may be a move to save on bonus money for DM5 and with the benefit of a better draft pick. The season is lost, next year is more of the same so who really cares about DM5 anyways. Why not see what you got and kill the prima donna stuff. That being said, the reason I can't watch the skins is the last two contract deals have been the worst and that is saying a lot given their history. DM5 Extension after playing horribly and overpaying Albert #92. Next year you will have to pay people to take free tickets to FedEx.

Posted by: Lefty_ | December 17, 2010 11:45 AM | Report abuse

Even if Grossman does start, and I'm not willing to trust un-named sources, I doubt we will see much of a drop-off from McNabb. At least whilst McNabb is in such bad form.

I am not a fan of Grossman but he didn't exactly have a great o-line or receivers when he went to the Super Bowl with Chicago. It wasn't a lack of pocket mobility that killed him but tendancy for dumb throws into coverage and botched snaps. In that respect, we wont see much change from the way McNabb has played this year.

Posted by: WeNeedLinemen | December 17, 2010 11:46 AM | Report abuse

Every decision should be aimed towards one question: What gets us closer to a Super Bowl?

Obviously, Shanahan has decided he has a declining and mediocre QB, even with a relatively improved cast, who won't get it done in the next few years. Grossman is no long-term answer but, statistically out of the playoffs, why not test-drive him? I assume this means McNabb is gone and Shanahan feels better off grooming a rookie or taking a chance on somebody else's castoff QB (Carson Palmer? Kevin Kolb? or nooooo Vince Young?)

I appreciate Shahahan's relentless drive for one goal: winning. I hope it doesn't alienate his team...we'll see.

McNabb - 161 games - 230 TD - 115 INT - 85.7 rating

Grossman - 38 games - 33 TD - 36 INT - 69.6 rating

Some McNabb NFL Records from Wikipedia:

- Least-intercepted quarterback per pass attempt of all time, (4588 attempts-96 interceptions, 2.09%)

- Second-best touchdown-to-interception ratio of all time, (209-96, 2.18) behind Tom Brady (217-92, 2.36)

- First NFL Quarterback ever to throw for more than 30 touchdowns and fewer than 10 interceptions (2004)

- 3rd highest winning percentage among active quarterbacks (83-45-1, .647) behind Peyton Manning (119-59-0, .669) and Tom Brady (88-25-0, .779)

Hey, Shanahan I knew you never should've came here because you did what you did to Jake Plummer what you're doing to Haynesworth...Can't get over confrontations, huh? Shyder thought you (Shanahan) would bring stability to the locker room, but remember the FANS pay to see the players NOT COACHES.

Shanahan who's your scapegoat for:

1. Missed Field Goals/Botched Field Goals
2. Penalties on Touchdown plays
3. Dropped balls from the RB and Receivers
4. Blocking/Sacks/Run Plays Stopped
5. Defensive Stops

Oh, that's right Shanahan your analysis shows that McNabb created all FIVE of these above issues.

I hate to say it, but McNabb as classy as you are, please leave this dysfunctional organization because you're in the wrong neiborhood to get the respect you deserve.

Most important fact - it is the coach's choice who will play. Why not see what you have in other players, better to put Beck in there though, not the highly overrated Grossman. Why not shake the team up and send a message by sitting the most respected player on the team. This also rests Donovan for next year, whether he's here or elsewhere. May also prevent some incentives from kicking in since Donovan is close to the top of Redskins passing yards for one year. Maybe sets up to avoid the $10M bonus before the end of the official NFL season (strong possibility).

Possible scenario 1 - Shanahan misses Denver and his big house. He wants to walk - preferably Danny lets him go. He goes back to coach Denver at the same pay as here. Denver does have a head coaching opening. By sitting Donovan, this riles the team and the owner. Maybe this will be Marty II.

Scenario 2 - throw the rest of the games to move up in the draft high enough to negotiate for trading up for Cam Newton.

Scenario 3 - Shanahan stays and trades for Cutler, his QB from Denver. A straight trade with McNabb for Cutler maybe.

In a lousy season record wise, this is a great soap opera.

Many people have mentioned that there was a reason why the Eagles traded Donovan within the divsion, but we also need to remember that there was also a reason why Shanahan was FIRED in Denver. I love how the players get the blame for a horrific season, but the coaches are not getting the same amount of blame. Kyle Shanahan is a complete and utter joke and yet it's the QB's fault that the offense sucks. If anyone thinks that this "man" will ever rise through the ranks and become a head coach, they're insane.

What a disaster! I hate to keep saying that, but that's really all that comes to mind. Complete disaster!!!

What good can come from this move?  Grossman plays well, we win, and maybe he's our QB next year?!
Shabby is a worse talent evaluater than Vinny!  Look at the boneheads moves he made this year:  cut Cartwright without a tryout, brings in Parker and Johnson (not Tomlinson or Westbrook!), cuts Torrain and gets him back due only due to injury, starts Galloway and never gives Thomas a snap at wide out, benches McNabb for a two minute drill with the season on the line, etc., etc.
If you're going to experiment, try Beck this week and see what you've got.  Gross man is no long term answer.  But what would you expect from this goofballWen and we're stuck with egotistical maniac for another year or two.

All the people saying "why not give a Rex a chance"? aren't mentioning WHY we'd give him a chance. The only NFL team more pathetic at QB than the Skins over the last 25 years is the Bears, and they dumped him. So we're taking Bears leftovers?!?

McNabb has to be viewed as a major disappointment. If anyone on RI thinks he's played well then I'd have to wonder what they'd been watching. Nobody thinks Grossman is the answer, but maybe it is time to see what the offense is supposed to look like from someone that has some familiarity with it because DMac has looked lost and we are 14 games into the season. Replays show him missing open receivers left and right. He only has himself to blame for this move. Time to watch and hopefully learn.

People need to get a grip. Shannahan and Allen were the correct move. But they took over a MESS. Gibbs tried to restore this team but his 4 years of efforts were undercut the minute they brought in Zorn and Co and kicked out Gibbs staff and intended predecessor Gregg Williams. It will take some time to get this team back to where we want it. They took a franchise LT with their first pick and took a flyer on 30-something QB. Looks like they were 1 for 2 here, altho I'm not willing to write #5 off yet. I think he deserves another year with some more help on the O-line and a year of learning the system under his belt. Granted, starting Grossman doesn't scream "vote of confidence" but I'm hoping this is just Shanny playing games.

You don't go from 4-12 to Super Bowl in one year in this league. If we don't win at least 8 games next year, I'll start to whine more but seriously, take a valium Chicken Littles.

The McNabb extension was brilliant for us. The initial report of a huge amount of guaranteed money turned out to be completely false.

For no extra future money, we get to sit on McNabb's rights until the first regular season of next year.

Essentially we managed to Franchise tag him, without using the tag. His agent is talking about the team showing disrespect, but he should probably concentrate on doing a better job for his client.

McNabb has to hope like hell he gets traded. The Redskins don't have to cut him until everyone elses roster is almost fixed. He has no shot at a big free agent deal this year.

Overall offensively the Skins have been weak in special teams its running game never was established and only a few top of the line receivers were not a threat. Enter Donovan McNabb who proved he could not carry them into pay dirt. I expected this as a result of this seasons performance.

Posted by: petethegreek35 | December 17, 2010 12:12 PM | Report abuse

It all goes back to broader problem the Redskins have. Good QB's, good teams, good runners, are not good or great because of their own personal ability but because they work within a system that is good from the top down. All good teams have good ownership, as a starting point, and that trickles down to coaching, to attitude, to wins. Snyder still thinks he creates a good team by buying "star" players or coaches, as if they operate in a vacuum. You could give the Skins Peyton Manning, and they would be no better than they are with McNabb. This team will never be good as long as Snyder is the owner.

Posted by: Reactive1 | December 17, 2010 12:13 PM | Report abuse

Initially, I was shocked. But upon further thought why not start Grossman to see what he can do in Kyle's "system". If he is not successful, you cut Grossman, draft a quarterback in the first round to serve as a backup for McNabb for the next two or three years (ala Aaron Rogers in Green Bay behind Brett Favre). In the final analysis, no quarterback has a fair chance behind this offensive line. The coaching staff does not seem to want to acknowledge this. I'm sure DeMarcus Ware is smacking his chops at the chance to take a shot at Grossman. I never thought I would see the day when I would root for a Cowboy's victory over the Redskins. That has now changed.

Posted by: nmyricks | December 17, 2010 12:13 PM | Report abuse

Let me begin by saying "ARE YOU KIDDING ME" Grossman, really. I don't care if he comes in a plays the game of his life, it's no way he's better than DM. The skins can not be considering RG, as starter for next season, or releasing DM, that's just plain stupid. If I were DM and I got bench on Sunday, and it goes down hill, then you better had activated your number 3 qb, because it's no way I'm going in, it's no way I'm playing the last two games of the season, in fact cut me known, because if you think Albert was a problem, he would be nothing compared to the issue I would be. Show some respect. You put the guy behind the worst o-line in the league and then blame him for now performing like a pro bowler. Address the issues at hand, improve the o-line, get some receivers, and figure out what you are going to do at running back.
Rex Grossman starting qb, "oh hell no"

This move is going to hurt McNabb's and Grossman's market value next year, although Grossman is probably doomed to be a backup anyway. Shanahan has a cold heart, and I'm sure the rest of the team sees it.

Grossman is gonna get eaten alive back there. I never thought I'd care about Grossman, but I hope he doesn't get embarrassed too badly.

I'm an ex-Broncos fan, ex because Shanahan showed he would rather show everyone he's a genius than win games. He's never done anything without Elway in Denver or Oakland, won't do much in DC either. Maybe he'll coach the Skins into a Wild Card loss someday.
McNabb did everything he could to put save the Skins last week. That was a great drive in a rain storm, only to be undone by the Special Teams. If they had some hotshot rookie, I could understand this, with Grossman they'll get beat by 30 and there's no "future" for Grossman as a starter in the NFL.

Posted by: awgodawgod | December 17, 2010 12:19 PM | Report abuse

The redskins have done much worse since benching McNabb the first time. The decision to undermine his leadership was possibly the catalyst for another wasted season. If they didn't want McNabb, why give up the draft picks. His performance in the last drive of last week's game was exceptional. It's what you pay a QB to do.
Special teams, clock management (and a million other ways the team finds ways to lose games it should win), reveal a poorly coached team. Benching the QB will do nothing to fix the comedy of errors that Shanahan has brought.
This is the same pattern we have seen again and again here. Snyder tries to buy big name players and coaches, but has no idea how to put a team together.

I'm not entirely surprised Donovan McNabb might be benched, but I'm also not sure whether this move will help. QB is not the only position where the Redskins need to see a dramatic improvement in performance.

Why yes it can jwash. Mr. wormburner himself could be starting. It's been said a thousand times and I'll say it one more time. If you think McNabb is anymore than an average to below average quarterback, then you are obviously still stuck in the 90's.

Here's an idea. Run a four down offense. Give the punter the day off and alternate quarterbacks. Have McNabb run the offense on first and third downs and Grossman run the offense on second and fourth downs. Some fun huh? Merry Christmas from an Eagles fan!

Posted by: bobleme | December 17, 2010 12:20 PM | Report abuse

McNabb or Grossman,
does it really matter? The skins will lose this game in a spectacular manner.
This talk about starting Grossman is only a "Shanny" diversion, from the fact that, so far his coaching skills are on par with Jim Zorn's.

Posted by: bestowens | December 17, 2010 12:23 PM | Report abuse

Unbelievable . . . for Donovan's sake I hope the Redskins do cut him. Donovan deserves so much better than the pathetic and dysfunctional Redskins. Are the Shannahans watching the same games I am? Is it Donovan'a fault that the punter can't hold the ball for an extra point? Did McNabb give up 59 points against the Eageles? Did Donovan get penalized to call back two of Brandon Banks'touchdowns? Incredible . . . and now we're stuck with the Shannahans. There is no end to this Redskins nightmare. . . I'm going to root for the team McNabb ends up with next year. I'm done with the Redskins.

We have the drama- and the dramatic- just no winners. We can take a great 4-3 and turn it into a lousy 3-4 in just 3 seasons- that is the new math!

Get ready for the trapeze act with the newly anointed retread Grossman, watch him flop!

See the little man in the Big Hat, standing in the Center Ring, watch it all - waiting for the lions to put him out of his misery.

I don't know what it is, but this isn't the Redskins as they could and should be.

Good advice. #5 has not done anything this year and is turning the ball over while making some real head scratching decisions. Accuracy? He doesn't have it like every Iggle fan told us. Finally a decision based on performance and not past achievements. I'd think more fans would see this as a step forward in seeing what we need for next year as we aren't going anywhere this year.

That being said, I wish we had a young potentail up and comer to put in but we have what we have. I hope Rex beats the Romosexuals and if he does, he will start the rest of the season.

I'm not sure this is the right move, and it is definitely a concession that they NET lost a 2nd rounder for nothing in this trade.

Still...insert J. Campbell's name in for McNabb's with the same performance over the year.

Would people still be so upset with the change?

If the team is rebuilding, which is exactly what the Skins should do, doesn't it make sense to see what they have in Grossman? This season is over, so why not use the game to evaluate players?

I like McNabb, but the team hasn't done much with him this season. It's not something I'd put 100% on him, obviously, with only a few proven skill players, most of whom are old and/or hurt, and an offensive line that is several drafts away from returning to true Hog form.

Chances are that both Grossman and McNabb will be gone by the time this team has finished rebuilding. In the meantime, I think we should be patient and let the GM and coaching staff evaluate what we've got.

This has to be the worst move yet! McNabb is the best thing going this season and his stats prove it. Shannahan is the worst and has no clue what he is doing. If I was McNabb I would pack my bags and roll out. I have been a Redskins female fan since I was 7 years old and this season is the worst. No structure, receivers dropping the ball, bad plays being called, and not to mention missed tackles. My high school team can play better.

I admit that McNabb has had a rough season, but I don't believe that Grossman will be any better on Sunday. He has played only a couple of minutes this season. I hope this is just Shanahan trying to play some kind of joke on the media. On the other hand, I've heard that Kyle and Rex are tight so it could be true. If it's true that Grossman will start, McNabb will probably be traded after the season ends.

A dead Jack Kent Cooke, even after all these years, would have this team and its management operating better, at all levels, than the current ownership. However, you've got to admit, all this nonsense keeps the team's name in the media when its performance certainly hasn't been able to accomplish that.

Posted by: afpadc | December 17, 2010 12:31 PM | Report abuse

I completely disagree with this decision. McNabb has not played great but he alone is not the problem. It is absolutely the coaches right to make this decision but how the Shanahans 1. make there decisions and 2. go about executing them seems to me foolish and without real class. Grossman will most likely throw three interceptions than touchdowns. Even if they simply wanted to take a look at Grossman going into next season (as this is a rebuilding year), to do this ahead of the Dallas game illustrates a lack of understanding of how much this game means to the Skins fanbase.

What difference does it make. Whether they stick in McNabb, Grossman, or even resurrect Johnny Unitas from the dead, they would still be unproductive because of the lame offensive line. I really hope though that McNabb moves on after this season. He's a classy guy and deserves a lot better than this screwed-up organization.

Will the lunacy never end? The reason this is so "galactically stupid" is not because McNabb isn't starting, it's because Grossman is. If Shanahan wanted to see th QB of the future, fine. But McNabb is being benched for a guy who he is better than that is CLEARLY no the QB of the fiture. Plus, Grossman is a statue behind an offensive line that couldn't keep a high school defense off their quarterback. Also, why now? McNabb was FAR WORSE 2 weeks ago compared to last week but the move wasn't made then. I'm now convinced that Shanahan is an IDIOT with an out of control ego! Did they think they were getting Payton Manning when the trade was made? McNabb never was a great pure passer but he is now being benched because he's doing what h'e"s done his entire career. New regime, same old dysfunction.

McNabb isn't and never was going to be the savior of the Washington Redskins. He simply was better than what the Redskins had at the time. I believe Shanahan will try and draft a QB with our first pick and try and trade either McNabb or Grossman. Most likely McNabb will be the one traded.

McNabb hasn't played well at all this season and his stats tell the story of a QB on the decline. He is too old to learn a new system. It is true that without his mobility the Redskins record would be a lot worse.

I'm so sick of listening to Mike Wise! He makes ZERO sense on this issue. He thinks it's disrepectful to bench McNabb...REALLY! Since when did respect or deserve have anything to do with football in the NFL! The coach is hired to coach and the players are hired to play! Coaches make the hard choices about who plays and who sits. It's not a decision that is made lightly! McNabb has had plenty of time to show what he can do and really has not played well and imo has not earned the right to start! I don't even care if he's hurt or not. I wouldn't play him right now! I also don't care what he did threw out his career in Philly! This is D.C.! He isn't playing for Philly! His reputation got him this job and the contract...but after that...it comes down to his play for the Washington Redskins! His play up to this point has not been good! I would argue that Jason Campbell would have put up just as good a numbers if not better!

So sad. I thought we'd made progress by hiring Shanahan, but turns out he's Vinny 2.0. No draft picks, overwhelming needs, no progress over a 20 game season (including pre). He doesn't have that deer-in-the-headlights look that Zorn had, but Shanny has not made this team any better. At all. So much for letting grown-ups run the team. JC17 was not the problem; neither is DM5. This team's personnel is not NFL caliber. THAT is the problem, with no solution in sight.

Skins won't win again this year.

Live from Los Angeles! There is an old saying NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER which refers to Donovan McNabb's rejection of playing for the Oakland Raiders. There is a reputation that the Raiders were a dysfunctional franchise and advisors close to McNabb told him to stay away from the team because it was now going to hurt his career. Now the Washington Redskins are the ones who might ship him out and Jason Campbell will be the beneficiary of the trade from the Washington Redskins to the Oakland Raiders. My mother in the 80s who was a corporate attorney in Los Angeles told me the story of Dietrich Noah and Howard Hughes in the 1960s who Hughes wanted to give Noah stock in TWA but turned it down because of Howard Hughes reputation as a Philanderer and tempermental personality. That TWA stock was worth billions after Howard Hughes died in 1977 and Dietrich Noah had always regretted that decision. The same will go to Donovan McNabb. Al Davis is the HEART of a Champion but people kept putting him down because of the teams performance in 2000s but now are turning around with a 6-7 record. Look at Richard Seymour who traded from New England to Oakland and how HE found his niche on the team. People were laughing at him especially commentators on ESPN, but HE still insist on being a Champion. In today's world people should not be complacent of their recent success but should strive to be a leader of an organization when duty calls!!!

Here is what I don't understand. You remove our best QB but you also don't start the biggest unknown of all of them, Beck. So you basically don't serve both purposes (chance to win now or chance to evaluate a potential unknown QB). Instead you opt for a player that isn't a short term or long term solution? That is stupid.

Snyder only hires Republicans, hence all the management-labor problems on the team. He thinks top-down and he wants a coach that does too. The Steelers (Tomlin), Colts (Dungy, Meeks), Jets (not great recently, but Ryan), and others have a more player-friendly model and it seems to be the way to go.

They're entertainers, but right now no one on the Redskins team is particularly entertaining (at not in a good way). Many people will still shell out a lot of money to watch, so I guess we don't have to worry about Dan, Mike and the players going broke.

They should have taken McNabb out two games ago. He sucks! I am really surprised they gave him that big contract. He hasn't done a damn thing for it. For a guy who is supposed to be so good, he has too many interceptions and too many balls thrown to the ground. It's time he goes and give a good young quarterback an opportunity. So what if we lose the last three.

What happens if Gross-man is sacked 5 times, fumbles once, and throws 2 interceptions in the first half? What do you do then, put McNabb in? It is clear Shanahan doesn't want to win, he wants to win "his way." If that weren't the case, they'd be playing a 4-3 defense and would have tailored the offense to the strenghts of their quarterback. That's what good coaches do.

Albert Haynesworth should start at QB. After all, they're paying him the biggest bucks.

Posted by: AlanGoldberg54 | December 17, 2010 1:04 PM | Report abuse

Why is this such a massive deal? I understand it being a big deal because Donovan McNabb is a marquee QB but he apparently wasn't doing so great in training camp and has had his worse season ever.

In this 24 hour news cycle, non-news becomes news and small news becomes much bigger because the media people need something to talk about. The media LOVES controversy, no matter how small, and the Skins have served up their share of controversy. (Albert Haynesworth collected that paycheck in April so, of course, Coach Shanahan is going to do with him what he wants).

My advice to EVERYONE is to sit back and trust Coach Shanahan for at least 1 more season.

I always got the sense that Donovan McNabb, as classy as he truly is, was an Eagle at heart. It's been as if he has been wearing his green jersey under his Skins one, and, like a jilted guy, if his ex-girlfriend who dumped him, asked for him back, McNabb would be back in Philly in a heartbeat. He's a classy guy, but he just always looks like he's got that Philly jersey on under his Washington one.

Posted by: realfutball | December 17, 2010 1:11 PM | Report abuse

The hope is that this represents a commitment by the owner and coaches to a couple of years of losing while they try to build a contender. That will take a couple of drafts and a lot of new faces especially on offense.

Why not take a look at Grossman under fire at this point in a losing season? Either he or McNabb will be gone after this season and hopefully a younger guy will come in to be tested/groomed.

This team is a work in its earliest stages.

Posted by: Aerowaz | December 17, 2010 1:18 PM | Report abuse

I never thought I'd say this but...I'm done. I just don't get it. Shanahan is a MORON. He said himself it takes 2-3 years to matser this offense yet he's dumping McNabb after less than one. And he's doing it because McNabb is now who he has been his entire career--much more of a playmaker and much less of a pure passer. Good coaches adjust their offense to the strenghts of their QB, not the other way around. It's clear Shanahan doesn't want to win, he wants to win "his way." He thinks he's the smartest guy in the world and if McNabb isn't setting the world on fire in his offense, then the QB has to be the problem. It couldn't possibly be the offensive line that couldn't keep a high school defense off of their quarterback, the receivers who can't get any seperation, or the glaring lack of a running game. What a joke.

Grossman could have a 158.3 rating or a 0 rating like he did in consecutive weeks with the Bears. And with that roll of the dice Shanahan could look absolutely brilliant or a fool. Unless Mikey has paid for some REALLY serious psychoanalysis time for our boy Rex, just a hunch... Mikey will be the fool after the Cowboys game.

This isn't a big deal to me. I think you ahve to see what the backups can do if you decide to put down the Mcnabb kool-aid. Honestly

I'd rather see Beck start than Rex. Grossman has already proven he can't hold on to the ball (Ask any Bear fan why they didn't have a Ring in the last decade and they will tell you all about the gem ofa game where REx had like 5 TO's 4 being fumbles) Beck is the future start him. Rex is terrible, and too short to throw over Dallas' line/Lbs.

This is befuddling to me though bc if you want to get ride of Donovan in the off season you have just slashed his worth in half by making it apparent he isn't as good as everyone thought he'd be.. Good Job SHanny..Ty Haslett for ruining our perinnial top 10 D and for making us the "General Hospital" of the league every week.

The problem isn't sitting McNabb, who isn't playing well, or putting out Grossman in what is sure to be a loss and thereby gain ground in the draft derby. These are rational decisions.

The problem is that the people who made the talent evaulation to get McNabb, at a steep price, are the same ones who will be picking the Skin's ostensible next QB in the draft.

I support Shanahan 100%. The team culture is still rotten. Anytime I hear an argument about "respect" I shudder. The players get way more respect--in terms of millions of dollars a year--than most fans ever do. The coach's job is to win. Looked at objectively, McNabb's season has been an epic failure. Shanahan's auditioning Grossman. He'll suck, but you have to be sure. They'll both be gone. We'll be playing with a rookie QB or a rental next year. My hope is a cheap rental while we build O-Line, WRs through the draft.

Donavan McNabb is not worth the fuss. If he had shown any sustained brilliance this season then I would agree with most of you in this blog. He has been barely adequate, and that is being very generous. He is the wrong quarterback for the system that is being put into place. The coaches are finally doing something that makes sense in the long run.

While I'm by no means a Cowgirls fan, it will be fun to watch them kick the Skins butts in true Dallas fashion on Sunday. Why would any player in his right mind ever want to sign with a mediocre team such as the Skins is beyond me (aside from the ridiculously fat paychecks of course). Until the Skins escape from their culture of mediocrity, I refuse to support them. Meanwhile, there is a great team north of the Beltway that knows how to put their heart and soul into their games and win championships too. My Purple People, the Baltimore Ravens. It's a joy to watch them play because even when they lose, they fight to the very end. Go Ravens!!

The difference between a Republican coach and a Dem coach is that the Republican will have the guts to make the tough calls and do what's right even though it's not popular. The Dem coach would be thinking about his FEELINGS and feel sorry for himself - like a big puddle of sobbing goo that leaves everybody miserable. No thanks! We've seen that horror show.

So much for preparing for a "big game." He just basically threw it out the window by benching the best QB on the team and a leader that teammates believed in. I think Shanahan is a liar and unable to admit that he has screwed up. All he is doing is finding excuses for his mediocre performance as a coach and McNabb will be a scapegoat. It's time for Shanahan to be fired, even though it probably won't happen.

Posted by: TaylorFan21 | December 17, 2010 1:45 PM | Report abuse

The Skins have won exactly once in Dallas since 1999, and maybe 3 times there since 1993. So whether McNabb plays or not, Rex or not, likely to lose in TX the same as Jason did, Heath, Gus, Brad, Billy, Especially Sonny, Peete, Banks, and many others.

Not long ago, Dallas beat them 13 straight. In 50 years head to head, Skins have beaten Dallas two straight times nad never more than 3 straight times. So who has played over 50 years (since 1960), still has Dallas leading the "so called rivalry" about 90-55 or so.

If someone beat me 90-55 in tennis, I would not call them my rival.

Cam Newton or Jake Locker should be available, depending on when they select. I'm from the school of "If you are a General, you should select your Colonels to lead".

Shanny's off the deep end. Humiliating and dropping the team's two best players in three weeks?

Even if Grossman plays well, I hope the immediate reaction is more thoughtful than "see, Shanny's a genius, they just needed the right QB." He should still take the blame for anointing McNabb. Can't have it both ways.

The story of our personnel moves should be Shanny's brilliant call to trade Campbell for Grossman, losing two draft picks and millions of Snyder's dollars in the process. Could have kept Campbell and drafted another offensive lineman (or two).

The sad part is, it wasn't Zorn's fault, or Campbell's fault. They still can't pass protect, no matter the scheme. The O-line "improvement" this year was replacing a pro-bowl LT with a future pro-bowl LT. The rest of the line is the same.

Also, remember the excitement for Shanny's two-tight end success? We have two excellent tight ends, and only two good receivers. Why aren't we putting Davis and Cooley on the field all the time to draw safeties away from Moss and Armstrong?

Posted by: djv1944 | December 17, 2010 1:58 PM | Report abuse

Shanahan is using McNabb as a scapegoat. He and his son have been dismal failures this season. The Defense is 32nd and the offensive calls by Kyle have been totally ineffective. The Offensive Line is so pitiful it is a miracle that McNabb has been able to throw any touchdowns as he is always running for his life. The Shanahans are trying to divert attention away from themselves - Snyder should fire them both.

Posted by: uofmdgrad | December 17, 2010 1:59 PM | Report abuse

The offensive line is horrible you could put Tom Brady behind that line and you still wouldn't win. You could put Joe Montana in his prime and not win the offensive and the lack of receiving depth along with play calling = new offensive coordinator- Shanahan not going to fire his kid so he blames the QB and holder for the last game.

this is great! This team isn't going to be any good for at least 2 years. Bench Mcnabb and start Grossman until this team is ready to compete for a long playoff run. They need to cut Mcnabb at the end of the season and build through the draft. Draft a QB, WR and O-line in the next couple of drafts and develop QB while Grossman starts. And who knows, maybe we get lucky like the Raiders did with Gannon .

shanahan won in denver because you or i could have won with those teams. It's been one bonehaded mover after another with this guy. I think he's just here for the paycheck. Grossman will turn it over at least four times, but what else is new? The skins had a decent O Line one year since Snyder bought the team. Tom Brady probably wouldn't make a difference when you're O line is pourus, and gives it up on play after play. Whatever, whether they start McNabb or Grossman, they'll go down on Sunday. Three weeks ago I figured they wouldn't win another game this year, and they certainly have proved me right so far.

Its hard for me to believe that Mike Shanahan, a super bowl winning coach is capable of these recent dumb moves, you resign a quaterback that is clearly not the solution, you have REX freaking Groossman as your backup. Where the heck does this guy get his rep as a football genus, My two yr old son will not play on any team led by Rex Groosman, only Shanny knows why he's wasting Dan's money and our time with this nonsence. Mcnabb and Rex are the same guys.

McNabb will start and these reporters who propagated this rumor will not be held accountable.

Oh, please, get over yourself! You may not like it, but a lot of stories get broken only if the source is not indentifed. Yes, sometimes it is chickens**t, but not all the time, so your X=Y is about as accurate as 2+2=5.

I am done being a Redskin's fan. I'm finished! I have been a fan for over 40 years, and I have never witnessed anything as disrespectful as this. Ok, he is having an off year, certainly not his best, but I don't see him quitting on the team. Let's be real, even though there may be 5 or 6 players blocking up front, it seems like only 3. Only thing we can do with a frontline like that is run - that's it!!!. McNabb works the team down to tie the score and some else botchs the extra point and he gets blamed for the lose. It's sickening to see and I can't watch the "Bottom of the East Bowl". I bid the Washington Redskins a farewell for the season and from my life. I am signing out of the Redskins fan base. I have lost faith with management and the coaching. Goodbye.

The problem with the Redskins team is more than McNabb, Gorssman and other players. Dysfunction reigns within the internal bowels of this team.

And I wish the media stop presuming that just becuse they heard a couple of converations from within, that they can announce that Grossman is starting.

These players get paid BIG BUCKs - they need to start acting like professionals. the days of respect for one another and playing with integrity seem to be over in Washington, DC. All we can do is accept this seasons as it is, and regroup during the off season.

The more I think about this, the more I begin to think Shanny might be more cunning than we're giving him credit for. He knew teams like the Vikings would want McNabb after the season so he signed him to an extension so he could recoup one of the draft picks he gave up for him. The only problem is he's lowering McNabb's value by not playing him (the Vikings, or anybody else other than the Redskins for that matter, won't give up much for a player who's team clearly doesn't want him.) I also believe switching to the 3-4 now was a good idea if that's your long term plan. They weren't going to win this year with any defense so why not make the change now so that the few players who will still be here when the roster is more suited for the 3-4 will already be up to speed? The same can be said for playing Kory Lichtensteiger through his struggles. The sad part is that KL's struggles helped contribute to McNabb's.

Posted by: largetony86 | December 17, 2010 2:16 PM | Report abuse

This is a bad decision, badly executed. McNabb is clearly a better QB than Grossman. What did McNabb do to be treated like some lowly walk-on? He has acted with integrity and deference to his coaches and team throughout his time in DC. In return, he gets benched in the last few minutes of a game, and then removed as started 2 days before Dallas game. Maybe he should treat Shanahan like s7it and see what happens

Posted by: wapdoodle | December 17, 2010 2:19 PM | Report abuse

An overlooked aspect here relates to the collective bargaining agreement stalemate. This spring the Redskins' two player reps were Red Snapper and D McNabb. Now look at their situations. Kevin Mawauee, the union president, a Pro Bowl choice two years ago, was never signed by any club--and you'll never convince me that he's not better than any Redskins backup along the line.
Finally, who among you, would rather have had Campbell back this season instead of McNabb?

Posted by: iliwai34 | December 17, 2010 2:20 PM | Report abuse

If somethings not working; why not try other options?

The objective is to win games. It doesn't matter whose feelings may be hurt, be they McNabb fans or Donovan(when-I'm-not-throwing-at-feet-I'm- throwing-interceptions) McNabb.

There is no such thing as "job security" in successful organizations. Exceed expectations or be gone.

This is why "Danny Boy" should sell. He knows nothing about the game. Inept coaches, giving big sums of money to old players, destroying the Redskins great tradtion. It was sumed up when the TV cameras showed Joe Gibbs shaking his head sitting next to Snyder, as to say "Pitiful". As long as "Little" Dan has the team, we fans are screwed.

Snyder is supposed to be one who loves this team. If so, he should start looking at some of the successful young coordinators for his head coach, and then get out of the way and let him and his staff build a winning team. Some one who can find out the strenght of what he has right now and play to that strenght while he build what he really wants thru the draft.

Much like the Haynesworth saga, the McNabb benching is just another distraction from the larger point that Shanahan is just Zorn phase II. He has failed to improve the offense and has actually made the defense worse.

We can lose with or without Mcnabb. Why not actually rebuild this team for the long haul instead of trying a quick fix. We have to lose to Dallas. And benching McNabb assures that, not only will the Redskins lose...McNabb won't risk injury.

Look, the season is over, and we definitely do not want Dallas, an all around more talented team, picking AHEAD of us in the draft.

Had they not cut Colt, who showed he could win at every level, he would not have been in that accident. He was released from the hospital within days and the injuries he suffered certainly are less sustaining than the beatings he's endured since childhood playing football. Remember, the NFL injury rate is 100%, i.e., every player every season suffers what those of us not playing ball would call massive trauma. Why do they keep on? Remember Wally Pipp, they do!

cutting McNabb doesn't help you "build through the draft." We already have traded away next year's 3rd and 4th round picks (for McNabb and Jamal Brown). Now, you want to cut McNabb and use the 1st round pick on a QB? that leaves you with a 2nd and a bunch of low round picks to "build through the draft." Now see how the McNabb trade was a mistake?

Rex Grossman is a total joke. All i expected this year was growth and an all together one for all team. This makes me wish for Zorn. What the heck is going on. Dare I say we were better off with Cerrato? Not far from it. If your making mistakes on this level I think Shannahan wants out I remember when Tampa Bay went winless years ago at least they remained organized. We could have easily waited till after the season to sign McNabb, I'm stunned at the things that are happening. I can't beleive it but Shannahan has to go as well Rex and the rest of the staff. What is going on this move screams fire everyone. Haynesworth is totally screwing up Orakpo's head. Quit playing games and release him and McNabb. I can't stand Rex he could not start on alot of college teams

What is wrong with everyone? We're the same fanbase that has been screaming for some continuity over the past decade yet the number of people on here screaming for Shanahan to lose his job after one season is crazy. What is there to lose by seeing how Grossman plays in 3 regular season game? If he's awful, then the team can cut him in the offseason and look for another backup. If he plays great, then we have a serviceable backup. There's zero upside to playing McNabb for the rest of the season. Who cares if he feels disrespected. That's what comes with the profession. He's gotten over being benched in the past and he'll get over it again.

People who think that Shanahan has peaked or that he taking the helm was a another bad hiring by Snyder are MORONS. The guys doesn't give a f$ck what you think and that is why he is so good. He does things his way and he wins, plain and simple. The guy was run out of Denver (where i live) and now people are begging for his return. Shanahan will be around for the next few years (at least) and the Skins will improve each year. It amazes me how many haters come to this site to belly ach. Get over your self and cheer for the team and the organization you claim to love. Pathetic!

Posted by: skins10 | December 17, 2010 3:16 PM | Report abuse

Looks like our biggest mistake was bringing an AFC coach over here. The Shanahans may know of our rivalry with Dallas, but they haven't lived it. They also don't seem to know about "smashmouth football" or the perils of using 4-3 players in a 3-4 defense. Just because something worked in Denver, what made them think that it would necessarily work here? Pure arrogance, and both the players and fans are paying the price.

Players are totally ticked off at the way McNabb has been treated, and fans feel spit upon by the way this upcoming game is being used as an "experiment." If, however, this whole thing was a media ruse, it was a hell of a distraction, at best.

Total management overhaul is needed - again. No end in sight until Danny gets a clue. Shanahans are well on their way to losing both the locker room and the fans - if neither group gives a damn, what's the point?

Whether or not the o-line has let him down, McNabb has been anything but effective this season. He has been downright terrible at times (many times). Skins can't make the playoffs this season, so why not see what Grossman can do? Do the Skins have an effective backup heading into 2011? Let's find out. I have been a Skins fan since 1981, so I don't want to hear the Cowboy/Redskin argument. Do I want to win? Sure. But I don't believe a working in slow-motion McNabb gives us any better chance of winning.

Another bully/control freak /micro-manager for a coach...let's see, Chilly has been fired, and so has McDaniel...I'll tell you what kind of QB Grossman is: an undeveloped college QB. He needed to stay at University of Florida, but he took the money and ran. Hey, he's made a lot of money and I hope he saved it. He will not stop checking down, staring down his receivers, looking to one side of the field or recognize extravegant defensive schemes.

I do feel bad for the Redskin fans, because they have no control over this situation. Donovan was given a suspect offensive line, less than stellar receivers and a banged-up starting running back.

At least Donovan can stay home in Arizona year-round. Meanwhile, Shanahan just wrote his death certificate. I guess wins are harded to come by when you don't have a John Elway, huh Mike?

Why The McNabb Benching Isn’t A Complete Mistake

Now I’m sure I will have a lot to say on this topic later, but I wanted to give some of my quick thoughts:

First I want to say that Mike Shanahan has handled this situation horribly. The whole thing the other day about not wanting the Cowboys to know who to prepare for was a complete joke. Do you think the Cowboys are completely changing their gameplan now that Grossman is under center? I think Shanahan handled this unprofessionally and put the focus of this situation on him, his son and the organization, instead of where it should fall, Donovan McNabb. That being said I think there could be some positives to this move that have been lost in the way it was handled:

Donovan is a classy guy and maybe the best QB this team has ever had. I like McNabb and much lesser than I have before, but I like the Redskins too, Mike Shanahan, you should be throwing Jim Haslett, your son, and yourself under the bus instead of Donovan, a nice guy. Why do some of you folks try to hold on to failure. Shanny came in to make a difference. When the tough decisions come, he has the guts to cut these "untouchables", that have "class". If Shanny is going to get the skins younger, faster, and able to compete with the eagles and giants, these hard choices must come. If any of you think McNabb is the answer, you haven't been watching. Some of you have said all week that the skins need to clean house, rebuild. When Shanny makes the first of many tough decisions, you start with your shanny snyder bashing. I don't think some of you have any understanding of what is really happening. Snyder has finally given control over to a football guy with some guts to create competition and a desire on this miserable team. Some of you guys have no idea what your talking about. Give shanny some time. Let them get younger and faster. Shanny said the "next donovan might be in the draft." Who might that be? Jake Locker or Cam Newton. I bet the skins will be in a position to get a pick for one of these guys. McNabb just didn't cut it. The eagles knew that. Now shanny does. Time to move on and give them some time.

Well that seals the deal for me! I gave up on Snyder & Co after the way they treated Zorn last year. Then they went out and hired McNabb, who I have always liked. So I said "OK, let's give them another shot." Well, they have had their shot and we are now 5-8. Yipeee!.

Thank God. The Redskins fanbase just got 10% smarter and 20% more loyal with your departure. Thank you and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

If we don't win at least 8 games next year, I'll start to whine more but seriously, take a valium

HELLO !!! Zorn went 8-8 his first year and 4-12 as assistant coach to head Coach Danny. They still had a top 5 defense last year, what happen to that defense this year? SHAMMY !!

No loss whatsoever!

The only guy that will miss McNabb next year ... will be the FedEx field divot replacer.

Let's see if Grossman and Beck are worth keeping around while we snatch up a young francise QB next year and finally get this rebuilding process headed in the right direction.

As a matter of fact, I bet you old Rex has a fairly respectable game this week, and the offense shows us a spark or two we haven't seen in a while.

Yes, we still have lots of problems to try and fix (and Rex is certainly not the answer) ... but getting McNabb out of here now will start the process of fixing the QB problem that much quicker. Two or three more years of the McNabb show would have just set us back even further.

Someone should have slapped Snyder and Shanahan in the head months ago when they first came up with the stupid idea of bringing McNabb in here. It could have saved us a few draft picks.

How in the hell does Shanahan think "HIS KID" is smarter than Andy Reid

Just a guess, but I'm thinking Colt Brennan doesn't look so bad right about now. As the Couch Slouch would say ... "Pay the man, Shirley"
