Rex Ryan Info

Rex Ryan presently is a Baltimore Ravens employee, still under contract according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The team paid for him - and any other member of Brian Billick's staff - to attend the Senior Bowl, and Ryan is doing so.

However, when the Ravens fired Billick at the end of the season, the team permitted all of its coaches to interview for other jobs, and to continue using the club's facility and their offices to do so while the Ravens conducted their coaching search. Several teams asked for permission to interview Ryan, Baltimore's D Coordinator since 2005, for D Coordinator jobs and were rebuffed. However, Ryan was free to interview for any head coaching position move without permission being necessary.

Sources said the Redskins did contact Ryan recently, which could have been ostensibly to talk about the head coaching opening. So they would not have had to contact Baltimore and sources said they never have contacted Baltimore for permission to interview Ryan.

The Ravens very much want to keep Ryan. The owner wants him. The players want him. New coach John Harbaugh knows him well, they coached together in the college ranks and he is the top guy for the job. Harbaugh and Ryan met over the weekend to discuss the coordinator job and remain in touch.

The Redskins also like Ryan for their D coordinator job and Owner Daniel Snyder is generally keen on setting records for spending on coaches. But the Ravens can still block any lateral move. So there we sit. Ryan has strong tied to agent Gary Wichard, who has a very, very close relationship with executive vice president Vinny Cerrato, so I am sure they could work something out with Ryan when need be, but the Redskins would have to find a way to allow the Ravens to release Ryan, or the Ravens would have to relent, go with someone else (San Digeo's LB coach Ron Rivera is the name several league sources believe would be Baltmore's second choice), or whatever.

If the situation cannot be resolved, the Redskins could move onto other candidates and still have Gregg Williams as assistant head coach - defense, under contract for another season at about $2 million. Sources who know Williams well say they doubt he would want to work on this new staff, or how the Redskins could make this fit, and the way the Redskins have handled this process, leaving Williams and the other coaches in the dark, it would be impossible for any of them to feel wanted.

So that doesn't look like a good fit. The Redskins also interviewed Tennessee D coordinator Jim Schwartz (the first person to interview) and Indy D coordinator Ron Meeks for the head coaching job, but their teams could also block lateral moves. If this thing got really interesting, though, and the Redskins can't get Ryan, I would not be stunned to see Schwartz be a candidate and perhaps Tennessee would let him leave for the DC job in DC - Schwartz is a Baltimore native and Georgetown guy - and then bring Gregg Williams back to Nashville.

Williams and Titans Coach Jeff Fisher are best friends. Williams coached there for a long time and reached the Super Bowl with Fisher. It would make a ton of sense. Would be a wild scenario but watching this thing unfold you just never know what's possible. If the Ryan thing falls through it might be worth keeping an eye on.

What about Baltimore? Might they not be willing to work a trade for Williams?

For the 'Skins, either Ryan or Schwartz would be a great replacement for Gregg, although either one could be gone in a year or two to be head coach somewhere. For Gregg, looks like it might be a while before he gets his next shot. Too bad -- I would like to have seen what he would do with this team.

I will personally buy the team for $1,000,000 Colombian pesos. The dollars pretty weak these days anyway.

I actually used to DEFEND Snyder, because I thought he was homegrown, no matter how annoying. Now I see he's nothing but a lucky dot.com billionaire with truly no mgmt or football skills.

Next thing is he'll bring in Tom Cruise to coach.

Somebody get Riggins loaded and point him at Snyder.

Posted by: hyperbanana | January 23, 2008 6:28 PM | Report abuse

seriously, this is like a soap opera at this point and the Danny is loving every minute of it. I mean, he's got us by the shorties and isn't letting go - no, he's actually plucking them one by one with Vinny Bob. THIS IS CRAZY!!!!!!

This shouldn't be too hard to protest.
We know how to get to Redskins Park in Ashburn.
We know were Snyder lives.
We can probably find out where Vinny lives.

It only takes one or two people to organize the protest and begin the boycott.

TE,I also would like to have seen what GG could have done in his second shot. With all of that aside. I do think that if things go as planned that maybe just maybe we could improve with a new OC. If they adjust the system to fit campbell who knows how far the kid can take us. The defense side will be fine I beleive we just need to keep them motivated. I will do more than others. I will set there all next year and watch every second of every win and loss that we have no matter what happens in the end

PLEASE HELP JASNO

There have got to be other DC alternatives for the skins than Ryan, Schwartz, etc., if those teams won't let them go (don't give them draft picks!!!). They should chase Rivera themselves.

Posted by: mtnskinsfan | January 23, 2008 6:35 PM | Report abuse

if it ain't broke, don't fix it. does dan snyder really think he can completely take the lid off this team's solidarity and not expect it to explode? did he not see these guys in the run to the playoffs? sure there are problems: a major coaching overall isn't the solution this time.

Posted by: alleo202 | January 23, 2008 6:37 PM | Report abuse

This is nuts. I'll give Fassel credit for getting to the Super Bowl, something the past 16 years of 'Skins coaches could not do. But seriously, the guy had 3 winning seasons out of 7. 3 out of 7!!! When he was with the Giants and they played the 'Skins, I always thought the 'Skins had the tactical advantage from a coaches standpoint, and that if we lost it was because our players were inferior. Even when we had Norv.

This is a disaster. A team that was on the brink, a la the Packers or Cowboys from last year to this year, is going down the drain. After 28 years, I'm finding a new team.

When the press conference occurs to announce Fossil as the next HC of the Washington Redskins, I hope someone( or a contigent of people) has a draft day flashback and starts booing as soon as Fossil is introduced. If I didnt live in Atlanta, I would do it my da# self.

This was foreseeable. The Danny wouldnt dare to put up his fantasy players above what Gibbs ordered. If Gibbs said "we need just a couple of low profile players" Danny responded "Yes Sir". Now that there are no Joe Gibbs to Restrain the Danny, well, its Fantasy Football all over again, remember thats the way Danny likes it, even thou it doesnt work. "Hey, if it aint broke, why fix it"...

Aren't you all over reacting just a little???
Williams isn't exactly an amazing choice for HC. Continuity is over rated if it means continual mediocrity.
I agree that Fassel isn't an exciting choice either. But if he has good coordinators, it could work.

1. Evidently, he's great in interviews. Snyder enjoyed chatting with him in 2004 as well. The Ravens liked his interviewing skills too, so they hired him. (Unfortunately, they didn't like his coaching skills, so they fired him 2 years later.)

2. He always seems to be available for the Skins openings! He was availble in 2004 (after getting fired in 2003) and he's available now (after getting fired in 2006)!

3. Since nobody else seems to want him, negotiating a contract should be fairly easy.

I guess there is always the possibility that he is the best guy for the job.

And it's not outrageous to think that a team with a new HC, OC & DC could make a playoff run. It's not like we're going through a complete rebuild (I hope!). I had a bit of a read on Jim Zorn, and I like the way he sounds, he's been Hasselbeck's QB coach his entire Seahawk career, which means that Zorn has been working with Holmgren for the past 7 years, which can't be a bad thing.

Vinny has the athority and is the enabaler. He feeds the info to Danny and strokes is Ego. Danny likes him and lessens to him. Vinny takes jobs he can not do over and over again. This smells like a power play, bringing in Vinny's guys so it his his team.

Snyder can not be fired or replaced. No one absolved him of anything. But if Vinny were the man, then Snyder could let him do his thing like a real GM.

If I were Fassel, I'd go buy a lottery ticket.

Just a week ago he was turned down for the offensive coordinator job in KANSAS CITY a year after Brian Billick (now also fired) fired him as BALTIMORES offensive coordinator.

And now, it appears, he is about to be the head coach of the 2nd most valuable and storied professional football teams.

Frankly, this is OFFENSIVE.

czescest,

I second your thoughts. Who the F cares anymore.

This whole thing is an embarrassment. On top of promoting Vinny, picking Fassel over Gregg, firing Al, keeping the coaches in the dark, ignoring the desires of his idol and personal adviser (all of which is great for STABILITY and CONTINUITY), he is now trying to poach another teams Defensive Coordinator.

You guys think it was bad throwing in an extra pick for Portis? How about that 3rd rounder for Brunell? 2 picks for Duckett? 2 for Lloyd? Just wait until we ship the Ravens a low to mid round pick, and give the guy twice as much as Gregg, to be the new Associate Head Coach/Only Here for the Money - Defense.

I am embarrassed to be a Redskins fan. Everybody I know is laughing at me, not just because of Fassel (although that has a lot to do with it) but also because of Vinny and the way this whole thing was handled.

We are without a doubt the laughingstock of the league as many have reported. I am sick... I mean literally sick that my favorite team in the world has reached this point.

Call me fair weather, call me what you want, but I've been calling this for years... and this time I actually think I'm in the majority..

Hail to the Redskins but F Dan Snyder. He has moved up to number 1 on my anthr@x list ahead of Basedow and OBL

How can someone who grew up loving the Redskins like Snyder did be so clueless on how he handles the team. It does not take a rocket scientist to see most in the organization and the fans want double G so the continuity from the year continues into the future. I did see great things for the Redskins and will eat crow if the possible rumored coaching staff keeps the recent success going from the latter part of the year. I guess that old adage is true about smart people having no common sense because I surely do not see any. Stupid is as stupid does I suppose.

I don't know if this is a good move. I don't know what Dan is doing. But for me, I see these decisions as being completely out of my hands so as this unfolds and eventually next season begins and then the future thereafter, I plan to approach it like I always do:

Start the season hoping for the best, Root like Hell every game to LIVE with every victory and DIE with every loss... then go about with the rest of my life until the next game.

I don't care who the coach is. I don't care who the players are. I'm a diehard REDSKIN and will always be, and as much heartache as this has caused in recent years, I still remember the glory and what that felt like, and I know we'll be there again.

And please do not stay positive. This is Steve and Heath all over again. 'Vinny and Fossel' what a team.

After some very preliminary scouting, we're leaning towards the Browns. Fits a lot of the criterion we are looking for in a franchise.

Funny story... apparently Snyder-owned extremeskins.com is getting many of the same comments being posted here at RI. This from The City Paper (click the link if you want to see a sample of comments, they're a lot like the ones here though):

"Several more pages of this same sentiment were entered within the first half hour of the thread's existence. Alas, the "Message to the Danny" thread disappeared from the board -- which, again, is owned by Snyder -- shortly after these samples were copied.

Ok I am done...can't take anymore of this pathetic approach by ownership/management. I have bled Redskin Burgundy for 37 years and can no longer fight the good fight.

I live in NJ and have Giants season tickets (don't ask)solely for the purpose of going to the Redskin game each year; I subscribe to Direct TV football package just to see the rest of the Redskin games... But no more...this has gotten ridiculous.

So after some serious soul searching I need a new team. I am looking for some suggestions...no NFC East teams need apply. Packers? Cardinals? Chargers? There has to be some team more worthy of our loyalty and dedication than this disaster currently wasting space in DC

....can't believe it has come to this....

I don't care who the coach is. I don't care who the players are. I'm a diehard REDSKIN and will always be, and as much heartache as this has caused in recent years, I still remember the glory and what that felt like, and I know we'll be there again.

Who wants to bet me a million dollars that during the presser tomorrow, the owner and his bug eyed GM refuse to comment on the process and why he lied about continuity and ended up kicking dozens of good men and coaches to the curb when Joe Gibbs recommended he keep them.

I would respect this man so much more if he would stop hiding in his owners box and speak to the media and his fans. Face the music, you clown!

Posted by: johnw | January 23, 2008 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Well, it's now clear that Snyder believes this team needs a major overhaul and not tinkering at the margins.

So, did Gibbs tell him this? Or did he ignore Gibbs? Or did Vinny tell him otherwise. My guess is that Vinny convinced him of the need for major changes and/or that Vinny wants to put his own mark on the team.

Bye bye Williams.

Personally, I think the team _does_ need major changes and not some changes here and there. They could survive for a year or two but not much further.

Whether Fassel and Zorn et al. are the people who can do this is a completely different question.

Snyder is really gambling here.

He's worth several billion; I'm worth slightly less than that. So, money talks, BS posts.

Posted by: SteveMG | January 23, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

not only is vinny a yes man, but he's just not a good talent evaluator at the pro level. whenever he goes out looking to fill spots, it's usually a name veteran, who costs more than he's worth. he did the same thing in san fran. they were on the verge of a championship, he came in and brought in deion sanders (sound familiar?) greene, and a few other players. they one the superbowl (they already had a very good core group), then were in salary cap hell for years afterwards. oh, vinny left right after so he didn't have to deal with that.

the guy is a hack.

Yep! Well it seems Jack Pardee is available!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Pardee

"In December 2007, Pardee, then 71, was contacted by athletic director Dave Maggard about the vacant head coaching job at the University of Houston. Signaling interest, he made it as far as a finalist for the position, however the school moved forward with Kevin Sumlin, 43, an offensive coordinator out of Bob Stoops Oklahoma program.[1]"

As a 40 year Skins fan, I have only put my colors away one time, and that was when Dion signed. If Fossil is hired, I'll put them away until Danny sells the team, and since he younger than I, that probably means I'll never again be a fan.

Danny is turning the Skins into the Cardinals. A team that will forever be wallering in mediocrity. If he was as smart as he thinks he is, he'd hire a real football guy and get the hell out of dodge. He has already sold us down the river the next couple years giving away draft picks for washed up vets. He has no plan!!!!!!! Stupid is as stupid does!

Hail to the REDSKINS! and Hell to the Danny...

As many of you know, I'm the biggest Redskins fan EVER but I can't deal with this anymore. The lies from Snyder really bother me.....the overlooking of Gibbs recommendation really bothers me....the fact we will be the 2008 version of the Miami Dolphins really bothers me. And it will serve Snyder right when we have a losing season.

Posted by: mul | January 23, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Doesn't this feel a little like Jeff George all over again? The Danny, in all his football wisdom, didn't appreciate Brad Johnson and believed Jeff George was the better QB. How'd that work out?

The Danny isn't stupid stupid, but he sure is football stupid. He'd rather get along with a coach, even if inferior, than hire the most qualified. Gregg may be abrasive and not be buddy buddy with Cerrato, but when your players and coaches almost universally pledge allegiance to a guy who for three out of the four years put great defenses on the field, even when the talent wasn't all that great, you go with that guy.

I never once feared Fassel when he coached the Giants. Sadly, the Skins will finish last in the NFC East next year, and the Danny and Vinny certainly won't take accountability for it... This whole thing is pathetic. If only there were a real way to make an owner accountable to their very loyal fan base.

Posted by: jlkogon | January 23, 2008 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Its about respect. i could respect Danny's decision to go after Spurrier. Even if it was a disaster, it was something Danny believed in.

But now Danny has a coach who has led his unit to the top of the league 3 times in 4 years. And who player after player after player has total respect for.

Danny is saying "I don't respect the players, I don't respect the coaches. I don't respect what we have accomplished here in the past few years. I don't respect the fans because I tell them one thing and do another. I don't respect what this team went thru in 2007 and how it pulled together."

"What I respect is my own judgment, though it has been wrong time after time. Which is why I am breaking up one of the few teams that made the playoffs and will hand it over to a staff that has never won much of anything."

Yup, when the owner says that to me, I have no problem rooting against him. Specifically, against him.

SteveMcG,

I couldn't agree more. If the Skins decide to trim the fat (older/high salaries) on the roster I'm all for it. If they decide to stay away from giving 20 mill to Briggs or Asante Samuel because they know they're in a "rebuilding" phase, fine! Seriously, I'm totally on board with that.

But you and I, and everyone else here, knows that isn't going to happen. Snyder and Vinny, and their pretty new pet Jim Fassel, are going to restructure all of these contracts (pushing the cap hits back), spend like crazy in free agency, trade draft picks (maybe even for coaches) and all it will get us is 5-11 to 9-7 every year.

We are stuck in mediocrity forever unless they blow it up. Saying that, please go back and read the 2nd paragraph. It will never happen. They think they can win now. They think they know what they're doing. I'm not saying that I do, but does a .440 winning percentage since you took over as owner good? How's that plan working out Vinny? It's not working and they think it does. And even when it appeared that Gibby had left things in good shape, and we were going to keep stability and charge ahead, look what happens...

We are totally f$cked and every realistic person on here knows this.

I dont want to add any more Fassel Fuel to the fire, but why is it a good thing that players feel comfortable around Greg Williams? I think there needs to be some tension on the team. Williams may not be the motivator that the team needs. A new hire says to everyone that nothing is set in stone. This is how the Patriots have one. Their coach could care less what your name or pedigree is. What makes the Patriots so good is that everyone on that team knows that you play if you are good and if you are not you don't.

Fassel had an attractive record in NY. This is all somewhat of a crap shoot. The sky however is not falling. The Redskins have not been very good for a long time. This can't hurt. I do feel bad for Williams and the other coaches, but the whole team needed shaking up.
As much as I like most of the players they do not have a winning attitude. Maybe Fassel can bring that.

I disagree. I think that's what they would have done if they stuck with Williams and the status quo.

If they go with Fassel et al., they'll focus on the draft and young players and rebuilding. Sure, they'll go after some FA; but it will be a re-focus on young players. There will be wholesale changes with the roster.

Can Fassel be that guy that takes the team to the next level. I will give him a chance if he is named the guy. But I am watching the draft , free agency and the pre season and if they do the same things before Gibbs then I am done with Snyder and he will be the next James Dolan of a sports team.

They are NOT brining in Fassell/Zorn and maybe Ryan to go young in the players. For that you hire Grimm/Rivera/Meeks/Schwartz etc...

You bring in Fassell b/c you think you can compete next year (not saying this correct, but it is there thinking. In NY he turned the Giants around quick with Dan Reeves team.

But his motivation song and dance got old quick and the club house was a MESS..why do you think they felt the need to bring in Hard Azz Caughlin to clean up his mess.....Loud mouth clubhouse politicians like Tiki, Shockey, Strahan were all born in the Fassell regime

Also lets stroll down Fassel Giants playoff history:

- Blowing 8 point lead in under 2 minutes to a 56 year old Randall Cunningham's Vikings

- Blowing 24 point second half lead to Garcia's 49ers

- Feilding a team in the SB that felt "just happy to be there and got spanked by Trent Dilfer lead Ravens.

Some of you people are completely out of control.

Sure, I would have liked to see Gregg get the job and Saunders as OC, just for sentimental reasons because Joe Gibbs left them to us as a bequest. But the most important thing for any team in any sport is that the HC and GM are working together on the same page. Gregg is known to be very hard to get along with and if he can't work for Vinny and Dan then it wouldn't work out and he needs to move on.

Fassel isn't an indefensible choice. He's got a winning record in the NFL as a head coach (which Williams does not) including a trip to the Super Bowl and a Coach of the Year award. By all accounts Zorn is a good QB coach who is ready to step up as OC.

Rex Ryan is such a hot commodity at the moment that two teams are wrangling for his services, so it's hard to argue that he's a stupid or crazy choice for DC. He comes from the same coaching tree as Williams so one can assume the terminology and such are similar enough not to confuse the defensive guys too much. Yes, if we end up paying high draft choices for him to the Ravens that would be bad, but neither JLC nor any other source has even suggested that is in the works. If the Ravens keep him we don't know what the backup plan is--I like JLC's idea of a swap with the Titans, or promoting Greg Blache or Jerry Grey who have both been DC's already.

Overall, these are not the coaches I would have hired, but they're not insane choices as some are making out--certainly not worth picketing Redskins Park over. If they stink up the joint there will be plenty of time to boo and plenty of people at FedEx who will join in doing it. In the meantime I personally will watch and hope for the best.

They are starting this spring. If we could only find someone in the DC area with 2-5 million to throw down for a team we could get one in DC...

football is a people business. how you treat people always matters. by treating GG so badly and disregarding the players so badly, Danny has shown he has no sense that football is a people business.

Will the players play harder for Fassel than for GG? Maybe, but I doubt it. Has Fassel earned the respect of any Skins player (Griffin I think played for him)? Not sure.

Has GG earned the respect of the Skins players? Yes

If I'm Danny and I can get the players to own the decision for HC with me, I do that. But I'm not Danny. My toys aren't as big -- but I don't break them.

Posted by: fawcett007 | January 23, 2008 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Geez, Williams must have really blown the interview process.

Or Snyder had his mind made up.

Any chances that Williams declined the HC position? I can't see that.

It seems to me that if Snyder wanted to continue with the veteran approach augmenting them with free agents, that you don't hire an entirely new crew.

He wants to make a clean break and with that, this new staff is going to want their own people/players.

My hunch: they're going young. Build through the draft and complement that with the FA. IOW, the opposite of what they've been doing.

If I'm wrong, Snyder is making another stupid decision.

Which, now that I think about it, he's known to do with this franchise.

Posted by: SteveMG | January 23, 2008 8:34 PM | Report abuse

I am with the minority here but lets see exactly what they do come draft free agency and such. Maybe Snyder did learn something from Gibbs and that is to go with what you think is best. And after four days of meetings he decided that GG was not the best for the job. So lets see how all of this pans out through the draft and free agency. Also, just like gibbs was doing what if Fassel is a temporary hire and they are actually looking at promoting one of the coordinators to HC in the future. Once again we do not know what Snyder is thinking. It only makes it easy for everyone to bash him.

Posted by: Hawkeye | January 23, 2008 8:35 PM | Report abuse

If they go with Fassel et al., they'll focus on the draft and young players and rebuilding. Sure, they'll go after some FA; but it will be a re-focus on young players. There will be wholesale changes with the roster.

I could be 100% wrong.

We'll see.

Posted by: SteveMG | January 23, 2008 08:01 PM

I hope you are 100% right, but I fear you will be 110% (coachspeak) wrong.

If they trade ANY pick for SexyRexy we will know they are back to (not that they ever left) not valuing the draft. They hope the cap will go up enough each year to bail them out of the year before, and that players will convert bonuses to salary to allow them to manipulate the cap year to year. As I have said previously, I fear we will find they have a lot of trouble getting people to convert contract for the next couple of months, unless they extend and put us deeper in the hole. The reason is that players do hate the unknown, and those that could get paid elsewhere will hold the chip they have, their high cap number, until they are comfortable.

If we kept GG they would already be comfortable.

Anyway, I love the draft, and the VinnyDAN years have been unendurably sad for me in that regard. I can't imagine the words 2, or 3 or 4 or 5 year plan coming from VinnyDAN. He will say they intend to win the whole thing next year, and off they will go.

I hope you are right and I am wrong.

Like many of you, I am more upset about Daniel Snyder's seeming lack of respect for his team, players and the remaining coaching staff with this ridiculous move. He sat there 2 weeks ago and said, "I like where we are, frankly...", and even acknowledged the sorry state of the franchise prior to Gibbs' arrival, which made me think that perhaps he MIGHT, just MIGHT, have learned a thing or two under Joe Gibbs II.

Now I realize it was all a facade. He was afraid of pissing Gibbs off so he did a lot of what Gibbs wanted while he was the coach, but in truth, didn't Gibbs do a lot of placating Dan, too? And now that Gibb is gone, Dan has no one to fear...no one to give him an honest assessment of his decision-making abilities.

I've been thinking for years that one way to get Snyder's attention, instead of boycotting the games (which we all know is NEVER going to happen!) we should pool our dollars as fans and take out a full-page ad in the Post. An "Open Letter from the Fans", as it were.

Let's tell Snyder exactly what we think of him. And let's have a list of all the names of the people who contributed to the ad...column after column after column of names. IMPORTANT names like heads of local businesses, politicians, etc. And "regular" names like mine, and many of us on this board.

Dan Snyder doesn't have to hear us when we whine and complain on a message board -- he can "shut down" websites, lock out reporters he doesn't like, etc., but he'd really sit up and take notice if people in this city began a paid advertising campaign telling him we simply do not approve of his handling of this proud, storied franchise.

The franchise belongs to him, in $$. But it belongs to all of us in heart, in soul, and in tradition. We can do something about this if we come together. A targeted paid media campaign, by the fans, FOR the fans (and the players, the city, and the entire NFL).

Posted by: mommyskinsfan | January 23, 2008 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Out here in SF area, we have seen first hand what crummy owners do. The Yorks who own SF are despised and the only challenge in scoring 49ers tix is to see if you can get them for free. The Raiders are rarely on local TV as they rarely sell out.

Neither stadium is a great fan experience -- but they are much smaller than FedEx.

I have seen the future and its ugly. But at least it is clear where the buck stops. Danny. A lot less bucks will stop in his pocket.

kost52 -- it really will be about respect. If you are good and know it, why go to DC? Out here, every coach in SF or Oakland knows this is the place you go to get some experience and then leave.

You go to DC if you are about money or if its a stepping stone to someplace else.

You have to respect the people you work for in order to do a very good job. Pick a job, pick a business. Its true across every business.

ESPN Chat -

Andrew (Indianapolis, IN): Mort...as a redskins fan, I am following closely the situation with the head coaching hunt. Everywhere I turn 99% of the Redskins fans are seriously upset if Dan Snyder hires anyone but Gregg Williams. What are your thoughts?

Chris Mortensen: It's Snyder's team. There obviously is something about Williams that has made them hesitate. I have heard (unconfirmed) that Williams has some specific demands/wants that they haven't agreed to. And Jim Fassel - who was a coach of the year and did a good job in NY - is not someone you can dismiss. I am anxious to see what happens.

Why would any good coach want to work for a punk like Snyder. Williams was a terrific coach respected by all and look what the little short punk did to him. If any coach comes here they are nothing more than a prostitute. Doing it only for the money! And on a final note F-You Snyder!! Sell the team you Ahole!!

Posted by: jimwell | January 23, 2008 8:53 PM | Report abuse

If GW is gone there are still other coaches on the team who would make good DCs. Jerry Gray, Greg Blache, and Kirk Olivadotti. Promoting one might help you keep the others and maintain a modicum of defensive continuity.

A targeted advertising blitz using the leverage of the fan base, including key stakeholders in our city (many of whom LOVE the Skins and I'm quite certain cannot be thrilled at what they have seen from this ownership) would do two things:

1. Get Snyder's attention, in a very public way and in a language he can understand. The media is how he made his fortune and he understands its relevance.

2. Show him his fan base is united from top to bottom in their current unrest, and disgust, of his ownership dealings.

A boycott of merchandise is great, but how do you "enforce" it? Too many knuckleheads will continue to purchase Skins stuff, no matter WHAT Snyder does. That's always been his ace in the hole. So and so sells his season tickets "to make a statement" and the tix are sold the next day to the next person on the waiting list. It's just not enough (at least not yet...)

We need a different approach. An effective advertising campaign can change hearts and minds, as we all know.

Buy no Redskin gear. Keep this venom up and keep the Redskins' sales down. Don't watch them on TV next year, because if Fassel is named coach I'm through with them until Snyder's gone.

Throughout all of this isn't it shameful that Russ Grimm's name has never even come up, or maybe he felt so much loyalty to Gibbs that he sent no feelers out to DC assuming Williams will get the job in the interim?

80% of the people on this blog DO HAVE BETTER FOOTBALL MINDS THAN DAN SNYDER, we just don't have the $$$ to back it up.
This kid (and I can say kid 'cause he's younger than me) doesn't even have the sense to mimmick the successful franchises of today (Pats, Steelers, Colts, Chargers), and we'll watch the Redskins become the second great DC sports franchise (Baltimore is the 1st) to whither away into meaninglessness.

"No it does not. It gets people to by crap and elect douch bags"

True. But a high-end advertisement -- an open-letter voicing fan displeasure and including some of the most important people in this community -- in the Washington Post, one of the nation's most respected newspapers, will certainly attract it's share of attention.

ESPN and others will pick up the story. And then, suddenly, the media will begin to chip away a little more and a little more at Snyder, who may not be able to hide quite so comfortably from his perch on the mountaintop any longer. He'll be forced to at least answer some questions about his decisions, which would make him somewhat accountable to us, his ticketholders/stakeholders.

I'm sick of Snyder's arrogance, his condescension. Oh, and for the record, I'm not necessarily anti-Fassel. I'm just anti-disrespect. Anti-lying. Anti-b.s. I'm anti-Snyder, that's what I am. I'd be thrilled if this team goes 10-6 next season, but I doubt that will happen, and even if it does, it will most likely remain a short-term solution to a long-term problem.

The problem is Snyder, plain and simple. Until that situation changes, bring in all the splashy or not-splashy head coaches you want. Or try "hitting him in his wallet" if you think you can make it work. I'm just saying nothing to this point has been able to penetrate the veil of secrecy behind which Snyder operates. Maybe an ad would get through.

Bill Clinton + Hillary Clinton = Billary

Snyder + Cerrato = Snerrato

Folks it doesn't matter who the coach is. We could ressurect Vince Lombardi for another go around and it wouldn't matter as long as Redskins nation is held hostage by Snerrato.

Yes. Don't bash the post for reporting what sports reporters around the nation are also reporting.

SNYDER IS EVIDENTALLY AN INCOMPETENT, PHONY, COWARD, AND CONTROL FREAK!!!!

Please, lets do something as fans. This is a disgrace to all Redskin Nation and an entire smack in the face to all who care about Sean Taylor in my eyes. I just feel like, not completely but almost, a no- brainer here.

I guess Snyder wants to murder the rest of the teamm because he is stabbing Redskin Nation in the back!

Yes, strong words, but come on man.

Won't Gibbs feel a little insulted here?

All he did gone in a flash.
His advice not taken.
Chemistry, comradary, personell investments gone...all in one Dan Snyder Brain Fart.....

I think we need to be heard somehow whether it matters are not if if we can boycott, or something else great.

Can someone give us a way to be heard by Snyder and the rest of the Country so he looks like even more of an idiot. It might not cure all but we will atleast be heard and it will be a start. Mr. Jason La Canfora, ole' tried and true, can you help in any way?

Snyder,

Prove me wrong. I would love nothing more than to give you an apology. Trick us all and make headlines that way, Keep our staff, GW head coach, and draft wisely. Please!

The only constants with the Redskins during this horrible era have been Dan Snyder, Vinny Cerrato, and long snapper Ethan Albright. So I say, Ethan Albright, it's all your fault.

Seriously though, Ethan Albright has been the one reliable constant over the last decade. So, that leaves us with racket ball partners Danny and Vinny. The problems will continue as long as Danny and Vinny are running the show.

I want my Redskins back. Redskins that look like my ole' Redskins. Danny boy go charged more for Six flag tix and leave my Skins alone. Dallas fans are loving this I bet. Dan S. has stolen my joy and replaced it with cold hard reality and darn it if I only had a billion dollars,he still would never sell this team. It'll be in his hands a long freaking time and every year past this one will be one less year without joy. Overstatement, heck no, ask a Red Sox fan how he felt when they won the world series.

Thx Dan thx for nothing...

Look, I'm not trying to be too blatant of a Snyder-defender, because these moves are certainly not what I would've hoped for. But, don't you guys think you're going a little over the top here? We all know no one here is actually going to look for a new team to root for.

And as far as getting rid of Snyder, do you really think he's worse than the Cardinals' owner? Or the Bengals'? Or the Vikings'? How's Al Davis been working out lately? The Lions' owner? The Falcons'? The 49ers? That's a quarter of the league, just off the top of my head, that's blatantly worse. Snyder's been to 3 playoffs in 8 years, as opposed to 0 in the 7 years before he got here. It's not like we were really that much better off. Maybe we should just calm down a little bit and let the whole situation play itself out. Everyone talks about how Williams would have been so much better the second time around, but there's no chance Fassel can be good the second time.

I'm not trying to say he will be good, cuz again, I'm not a big fan of these moves either. But fans have been wrong before.

Mr. Fassel:

If you are reading this, then, with all due respect, we are frustrated with Redskin's ownership, not you. You've become a victim of circumstance. I'm sure you're a fine, middle-of-the-road coach, but we already have our coach: His name is Greg Williams. Sorry, but this will not happen.

Mr. Snyder:

If you are reading this, then we all due respect, go to H*LL. You are to the Redskins what the Anti-Christ is to Christianity. The Redskins are my religion, and you have destroyed what it means to be a Redskin and what it means to be a fan. I am ashamed to can myself a fan.

After 26 years of fanaticism for this organization, you will have my resignation you if hire anyone but Greg Williams. Period. After 26 years of fanaticism for this organization, you will have my resignation you if you do not step back once and for all. Let me state this again: Twenty-six years.

What a fool.

Respectfully Yours

Hey all you bunch of idiots. If they weren't any good with Gibbs, what makes you want-a-be footgball jerks think a new coah is going to do. Believe me. Its Snyder and Vinnie that makes nobody jumping to get ANY coaching job with the Redskins org.

Posted by: dahduke | January 24, 2008 2:39 PM | Report abuse

I think this just shows that Joe Gibbs was probably asked to leave. Snider didn't have the guts to fire him, so he got Gibbs to leave quietly. Otherwise, why massacre the coaching staff now? He had no intention of providing continuity. Many players will want to leave, I would too. Danny is one bad little boy, and it's time he left town for good. They will BOO him everytime he shows his ugly face at the stadium. And they should!
