Rex Ryan/Senior Bowl Rumblings

The former Ravens defensive coordinator - and possibly future Ravens defensive coordinator - has been talked about among many NFL people as a possible replacement for Gregg Williams should Jim Fassel get the job. Ryan has ties to Vinny Cerrato and his name has come up frequently during this hiring process.

However, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, Ryan's contract stats has been reported incorrectly. It's been widely reported that Ryan was fired along with the rest of Baltimore's staff. But while it's true that Ryan is free to interview for any head coaching jobs - and he's still in play in Atltanta (who isnt't at this point? what a debacle the Falcons' situation has become), the Ravens could still block any lateral move, according to a source.

Ryan remains Baltimore's property as a defensive coordinator, and could ask for compensation should another team want Ryan to run its defense. The Ravens players wanted Ryan to get the head coaching job there and there is a strong belief Baltimore would like to retain him as defensive coordinator. So I doubt they'll just let him walk down 95. Now, Ryan might also want to push for a change of venau as well given he was passed over for the head gig. They'll have to work some things out, obviously. And the Redskins could try to get creative with some new titles for him - a specialty round here - but the situation is certainly more complicated than it would seem on the surface.

Redskins coaches still have been told nothing about the coaching vacancy and no word given to any candidates recently. A decision could come today perhaps. Sources said there was a brief conversation between Jim Schwartz's represenatives and the Redskins Sunday night but numerous parties invovled in the search, connected to numerous candidates, said they have been told essentially nothing in the last day.

Stay tuned.

Other stuff: Two Redskins coaches have their contracts expiring, RB coach Earnest Byner and LB coach Kirk Olivadotti. League sources would not be surprised to see Byner end up back with the Ravens possibly in the same role ... The Redskins contingent in Mobile is up in arms. Players and coaches are distraught over the poorly worded press release regarding Cerrato's promotion and Jim Fassel's emergence as a candidate with multiple interviews. They are taking a lot of grief from other team''s people down there and, according to some league sources, the word "laughingstock" is being thrown around in regards to how the team is operating. The timing of the Cerrato release and the fact that it stated he would have "roster" control was a big issue down there; that's always the domain of the coach. The team later backtracked on that issue when I pushed it with them and said any new coach would pick the players, but the inclusion of that word, clumsily or not, read like a "shot across the bow," according to one GM. Of course the players and coaches have a vested stake in Williams getting the gig, too, as it would mean greater security for them and in many cases a contract extension or re-negotiation.

Snyder's reputation of meddlesome ways is working against him here and the league is watching to see if he really chooses stability. This promotion reads to many as an extension of the past in that Snyder runs the team through Vinny, and Vinny and Dan, especially with Gibbs gone, will be in essence the team president/GM/whatever else. The titles don't matter; Snyder is obviously very involved and Gibbs said as much so many times in talking about draft picks, free agents, contracts, etc. They can lurk in the shadows and the coach gets to meet the media everyday and take all the blame.

Of course the players and coaches have a vested stake in Williams getting the gig, too, as it would mean greater security for them and in many cases a contract extension or re-negotiation.

If Cowher isn't going to coach this year why doesn't Danny elevate Williams and give him a year to see what he can do? Maybe he will succeed? Maybe he will fail? Either way it's a win-win for Danny.

If Ryan is not in the cards, then that is an indicator that GG is still in play in some capacity. They better be considering Williams as HC and bring in Schwartz as DC. Fassell can get the donuts.

From a very reliable source on Extremeskins.... oh how I hope he is wrong!

Spoke with my AFC North scout friend this morning. He is at the Senior Bowl and here is what he has heard down there about the Cerrato promotion and Fassel:

(1) NFL scouts and personnel people are "amused" about the Cerrato title. Everybody believes this just means they are going back to the pre-Gibbs front office structure. I am continually told that Cerrato has a good reputation as a talent evaluator of college players and if he just would stick to that he would be fine. Nobody thinks he can handle the whole personnel department and nobody thinks he will truly have that power.

(2) Fassel Hiring: Jaws were dropping all over the Senior Bowl when Fassel's name surfaced as a leading candidate. Redskins scouts that my buddy spoke with are now worried and pissed about the possible Fassel hiring. The Redskins coaches down at the Senior Bowl are expressing their displeasure to alot of people. If they were told something one way or another they could plan accordingly. He said he thinks any redskins coach down there is probably spending as much time trying to find a replacement job as they are actually scouting players.

My buddy asked a Redskins scout what he thinks the chances are that Williams gets the job and he said, "There is about a 25% chance Williams gets the job and I am probably being way too otpimistic about it."

Here is my Buddy's take on everything he has heard: Expect total upheaval again with the Redskins. The coaches will all go if Williams goes and there aren't many good assistant coaches out there that are looking for jobs.

Wish I had better news but that is a synopsis of what i was told. He is going to try to call me again later today if he hears anyhting new.

Also, did you see how quick Gibbs was back in his Nascar shirt... Dan ruined the HOF coach and made it so he didnt want to coach... sad.

The airplane tracking thread on extremeskins reports that a plane went from Dulles to Mobile, AL (Senior Bowl site) and back this morning. Speculation is that it might be Vinny going to the Senior Bowl. If so, it would suggest that an announcement will not come today. Which I would think would be bad news for Fassel, but who knows?

Personally I think Fassel as HC and Gregg as DC is beginning to make sense. Pushes Al out the door, but does preserve some stability. Everyone seems to be thinking Gregg would quit, but really where could he go? All the HC positions are filled (if ESPN's report on Atlanta today is true), and he's under contract here for next year as DC so the Redskins could just refuse interview requests if it came to that.

E - I don't think they'll make Fassel HC and GW Asst HC/Def. I would agree he wouldn't want to stay.

I'll have to admit that I've been somewhat ambivalent about GggW. I haven't been sold on him being the answer (record at Buffalo, having lost the team there reportedly, seemed to let ego get in way of making the right change -- Rocky last year, Lavar a couple of years ago, Springs early in the year). If he had been made the coach, I'd have shrugged and so, well, hope it works out.

But I have been looking for something / someone who got me excited. The day Gibbs retired, I was EXCITED because I just KNEW that Cowher was on the way. And I thought that would have been perfect. But it's not to be. I'd have even loved and been excited for Marty Ball (still would -- does anyone really believe we wouldn't be better off today if he'd have stayed on???) or Jimmy Johnson (can't believe I'm saying that!). And as has been said, there just aren't any exciting or "surefire" picks out there this year. Gibbs just REALLY left us in the lurch by retiring this year and not next.

Which brings us to Fassell. I think he could be an OK pick. Not excited, but not apoplectic with fear and despair. Don't think we'll tank. But guys, lets be real. We have had two end of the year resurrections from HORRIBLE starts that ended with us in the playoffs in the past 3 years. The need to pull it out our a**es at the end of the year was because of COACHING -- this year and two years ago. That includes GggW. There are some good things going, but we're not just one or two moves away from winning it all.

I think we'll be ok with either GggW or Fassell. For those who say give GggW a year and if that doesn't work out, just hire Cowher.... Get real. How can you give someone a year and call that a fair chance?

Here is my submission

I just wanted to let you know the apparent displeasure you are inciting amonst all the the faithful fans who fill the skins coffers each year.

Now nothing has been made official, but I guarantee that if the Redskins dont stick with continuity (your words not mine)and keep the current coaching staff (we dont consider promoting vinny as continuity) then you might just lose the fans base that your money making machine, I mean football organization.

I speak for many people on many public forums that we are starting to feel used and abused by you Mr Snyder. We love our redskins, we have bought into what you have sold us for the last four years about going about this thing correct. You brought Gibbs in to right the ship, and now when we seem close and you have a chance to stay on that path it appears you are ready to abandon said ship to get on the fancier one.

The skins faithful will not stand. A great business man as youself should know you dont bite the hand that feeds you. Pay attention to your constituents for once Mr Synder.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Let's not overestimate Vinnie. There's no reason he couldn't throw a few draft picks Baltimore's way to pry loose Rex Ryan.

One bright aside to all this - Looks like the Cowboys are continuing to lose members of their coaching staff - Todd Bowles and Paul Pasqualoni to Miami.

Zebra,

That guy from extremeskins has been right before so I definitely take him at his word.

Like I just finished saying on the last post, this whole thing is disturbing. The most disturbing part is that we'll never even get to hear the thought process behind this whole ridiculous ordeal since Dan and Vinny refuse to answer questions.

I, for one, have had enough. I will not be renewing my season tickets as most of you know. But it's not just for the inevitable hiring of Jim Fassel, which makes him look like a fool for ever preaching the words "stability" and "continuity" and ignoring the advice of his idol Joe Gibbs. It's also for his flat out refusal to come to the microphone and answer questions.

I spend $2,100 a year on tickets. I probably spend another $1,000 on beer, food, merchandise, etc. We put money into this punks wallet, yet he constantly refuses to answer the difficult questions, which all of us want to know.

I can't wait to see him dance around the introductory press conference. Heck, he and Vinny may even duck out after he introduces Fassel so he doesn't look like a moron dancing around questions.

I'm so sick of this organization I could scream.

Schwartz is under contract. Unless we sign him as HC, we can't sign him without compensation to Tennessee.

Gregg is all or nothing at all. If we don't make Gregg HC, he's gone. The new guy will want his own coordinator, and Gregg will want out of the Looney Bin. There are plenty of teams out there who would fire their own DC to hire Gregg.

His contract probably contains a clause that allows him to void it if the HC changes. And even if it doesn't, there's no way you want an unhappy DC in your locker room.

Here are quotes from the other paper in town. I got the warm and fuzzies after reading it...then promptly threw up in my mouth:

Cerrato having more control also could mean Snyder is itching to get more involved after playing a supporting role with Gibbs.

Added a league source: "Even if Vinny's in charge, you know that Snyder's really in charge."

A veteran Redskins player continued to hope Williams gets the job even with Cerrato's elevation.

"It's kind of crazy right now," the player said. "This thing has been taking a long time. Gregg knows this team better than anybody else. Vinny's not a bad person, but he was here when they made some terrible mistakes with personnel."

It remains unlikely the Redskins will hire a person under the title of general manager.

"I hope they don't change the Joe Gibbs way of running things," another veteran player said. "I would hate to see what we've got going ripped apart."

Snyder and Cerrato weren't available for comment, and Cerrato did not return a phone call to his office.

Cerrato, who previously held the title of vice president/football operations, has been with the Redskins for two stints and eight seasons.

Fassel, 58, who spent the past season doing radio commentary for Westwood One, went 58-53-1 in seven seasons as the Giants' coach (1997-2003). Late in the 2000 season, Fassel made his famous guarantee the team would reach the postseason. They reached the Super Bowl before losing to Baltimore. He went 2-3 in the playoffs with the Giants.

From 2004 to October 2006, Fassel was the Ravens' offensive coordinator under close friend Brian Billick. During that span, the Ravens finished 31st and 24th in yards the first two seasons. He was fired when Baltimore ranked 29th in yards after six games in 2006.

"Everywhere I've been, I've gotten the offense up and running pretty fast," Fassel said after his firing. "It didn't happen here and the reason, I believe, is that I wasn't in full control."

It is assumed Fassel would call the plays for the Redskins, making Al Saunders' return unlikely. It would also mean quarterback Jason Campbell would be playing in his third system in four seasons.

"Any new coach is going to want to bring in his own staff," the second veteran player said. "You would hate to see a young quarterback start over again with another new offense."

The hiring of Jim Fassell would be alot like "revenge sex." Danny-Poo feels like he got dumped by Joe Gibbs, so now he is getting his revenge by sleeping with Fassell, who would have gotten the job if not for Gibb's return.

The GM/head personnel guy should be picking the players. The HC should be the one deciding which players play. Total roster control for either is nuts.

Laughing stock is fickle. We were the laughing stock after Gibbs called the double time out. We stopped being the laughing stock after Gibbs reeled off four wins and got the team into the playoffs.

If the new coach wins his first four games we won't be a laughing stock even if the coach is Barno. If the new coach loses his first four games, then we'll be a laughing stock even if the new coach is Bill Cowher. Very short memory in this league.

Snyder begged Gibbs to stay. When he didnt, Snyder threw a holy hissy fit and decided to say F that and everyone he brought here.

Bye Bye Al, Bye Bye Greg, Bye Bye Buges.

With no BIG names out there to be had, Synder knows no better than to Hire the flashiest name, so he then turns to Vinny who says, hey I got a friend who can coach.

Synder is still mad about the fact that he is short and ugly, and now he is livinghis life like one little pentulant child.

Here's a similar situation in a smaller scale: our school system is getting a new middle/elementary school next year and are asking teachers where they would like to be placed. They have not announced who the principal for the new school will be, but want the teachers to choose where they will be working. The "HR" has been very mum on all of their decisions and are basically leaving the faculty in the dark. The principal makes a big difference with how a school runs.

Reminds me of the Redskins for some reason...

Sorry, back to teaching.

Also, I've been an Earnest Byner fan for awhile. It would be a shame if (per Jasno's update to the thread) he gets picked up in Baltimore.

The intergoogles say that "laughing stock" probably originates from the idea of the public stockade (where the head and arms of the prisoner are locked down, keeping the prisoner in a bent over position) where peeps where forced to endure public ridicule.

The image works on a variety of levels, not the least of which is the idea of being "trapped" (e.g., longtime fans) ... or being bent over ...

Probably minding their own business. Mr. Snyder paid their salaries last year. They didn't pay his. He's the owner. They work for him.

There's something about that old employer-employee relationship that makes the employee say "When Mr. Snyder wants to hear my opinion, he'll tell me what it should be."

To me, losing two good up an comer coaches like Byner and Olivadotti aren't going to be kept and groomed is the sign of an organization with no vision, institutional smarts or football acumen.

Let's face it, friends -- The Danny doesn't give a rat's a$$ about winning here, just about making money and being in control. He's been able to do the former while putting a mediocre product on the field, and for that reason it doesn't matter to him WHO he brings in to coach this team, nor if we or the players would support it -- as long as the 'Skins remain one of the richest franchises in the NFL, Danny will keep milking us for all our hard-earned $$ and laughing all the way to the bank while we keep saying "wait'll next year" after week 4 each season.

As for being in control, GG probably wouldn't defer to Danny as much as a newbie like Fossil would.

So for that reason, I'd expect Fossil and his band of henchmen to be announced today or tomorrow; GG and the rest of the current staff to go running for the doors within 72 hours; and the players to shut down for the next season before it even starts.

Get ready for 3-4 more years of rebuilding. Or one year, followed by Cowher...

I don't agree that VinnyDAN does not care about winning. He just does not care about winning unless he can say that it was because of him and his decisions. He wants to win, because that then gives him the credit. He spends the money. He wants to win. But only if he gets all the credit.

Still, the media and we uberfans drill down every posible variable of every possible candidate until we've dissected him like a frog in freshman biology. The only thing worse than this are the political pundits on cable news.

Dan will eventually hire who he hires. Frankly, there just isn't an "IT" candidate. Everyone has flaws. A case can be made for continuity of this mediocrity, but I can make a compelling case to blow up this mess and rebuild too.

Frankly, if I weren't brainwashed as a child to love this team no matter their degree of suckitude, this might have been the perfect time for a divorce. But like any abused spouse, I'll stay for the beatings until my poor heart finally gives out.

As has been pointed out here numerous times, there is a big difference between playing for a paycheck and playing with heart. It's a fact that the Skins players bonded as a team and started playing unselfishly as a team during the second half of the season. That is something magic when it happens. And it clearly made a difference in the won/loss column. The priority should be to keep that chemistry together and put the staff in place to help these guys reach their full potential, continuing on what they've already built. If they play next season like they did the last four games of the regular season we could be in for something special. Of course, if Snyder should decide none of that is important.. it's back to square one in my humble opinion. And I don't see us recovering for a long, long, long time.

Why do you all seem to think the Redskins are in such great shape. Two winning seasons in the last four, two times as the SIXTH seed in the playoffs, two miracle runs are the only reason we made the playoffs? What about that screams don't mess with it?

Gregg Williams will not work as head coach, he will not become Bill Bellichick, Fassel took a team to the SUPER BOWL, isn't that what you all want? Or is it more important to keep continuity so we can keep either losing or being a sixth seed in the playoffs?

And one commenter wrote, "Snyder ruined Gibbs"? What are you talking about? Maybe time away from the game ruined Gibbs, or wait Gibbs wasn't ruined at all according to most of you because 9-7 is great and worth preserving year after year.

Chris Mortensen: It's Snyder's team. There obviously is something about Williams that has made them hesitate. I have heard (unconfirmed) that Williams has some specific demands/wants that they haven't agreed to. And Jim Fassel - who was a coach of the year and did a good job in NY - is not someone you can dismiss. I am anxious to see what happens.

For all you know, Williams was insufferable in his interviews and Fassel blew everyone away.

Tom Coughlin was one botched goal-line stand away from losing that Giants team THIS YEAR, and now he's in the Superbowl.

Snyder has made mistakes, and will make more, but he does what he thinks will make us winners, and that will forever put him way above any Angelos comparison.

Bottom line: no one on here knows, yet we all have adopted this idea that continuity for a mediocre, underperforming, unfocused team is a good thing.

If Fassel goes 12-4 and wins the division because his team comes out to play in the 2nd half and doesn't fumble on simple end arounds, will you be happy?

Yeesh.

Why is this moron of an owner so infatuated with Fassel? And on top of that he runs a west coast offense which I don't see Campbell fitting in. I don't understand why you don't just make the most rational decision on a team that had a winning record and made the playoffs desite a numerous injuries. I've never paid much attention to the antics of Snyder, but I'm starting to see why so many Redskin fans hate him. He's basically willing to start from scratch with a playoff team.

People, people, people...

Why is no one talking about the PERFECT hire for the Redskins? Anyone remember Russ Grimm? Ex-Redskin who will continue the same Gibbs tradition, has ties to the champion Steelers from a few years ago (so he knows how a REAL organization runs)and has a tremendous upside that includes being here for the long haul (i.e.- longer than 4 years). Screw guessing at coordinators, let Russ pick the staff so we get some REAL continuity down the line instead of trying to keep an old roster together in the name of "being close". The thing that depresses me most is that Snyder doesn't have the foresight or the football smarts to make hire like that...

Hey! In the realm of idle conjecture about unconfirmed rumors, shouldn't we discuss this quote from Chris Mortensen: "I have heard (unconfirmed) that Williams has some specific demands/wants that they haven't agreed to."?

Now, what were the specific, deal-breaker demands?

1. Vinny Cerrato would report to Gregg?

2. Al Saunders would/wouldn't be the OC?

3. Better parking spot?

4. Six free rides on Redskin 1?

5. Season passes for his family @ Six Flags?

I can not believe that people are so happy with what Gibbs brought back and you want it to continue. Players who need to have a teamate die to actually play hard and together. 20 million over the cap alot of that Gibbs fault because there is no way Vinny overruled Gibbs. Players who do not want to practice, players who take no accountability for losses. Two lossing seasons and two so so seasons making the playoffs but not doing much. An offense that Gibbs was running not AS until the last four games once Collins came in that was so conservative that JC could not do anything. Who ever the new coach is and I hope it is GG needs to kick some of these players in the A$$ and let them know you play hard and together all the time not just when a tragedy happens.

Posted by: kmdp4 | January 23, 2008 12:37 PM | Report abuse

this is easy to figure out -- snyderboy won't hire anyone who will make demands regarding how he runs things -- that's why he fired Marty and is bypassing GW --- too many demands to do things the right way -- so he'll hire a shlumpf like Fassel who's just happy to have a job and won't rock the boat

And the last 3 blog entries obviously sparked a fire amongst the fans.

Take notice Snyder.

Don't stop me I'm on a roll.

In all seriousness I think the players will adjust if Williams is not named HC. Just look at the Steelers from last year. Everyone thought they'd go inhouse with Grimm or Wisenhunt. They didn't and the team still made it to the playoffs. And for the folks who think players won't restructure contracts because of this. Well the ones who are being asked to take a reduction in salary may be troublesome, the others aren't going to say no to having non-guaranteed money converted to upfront guaranteed bonuses. They may be upset but they're not stupid.

Posted by: mtnskinsfan | January 23, 2008 12:46 PM | Report abuse

psps--

But getting to the Super Bowl does make you better than a guy with a 17-31 record who couldn't get a team to the playoffs, right?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 23, 2008 12:48 PM | Report abuse

if they're restructuring their contract, their bonuses are prorated throughout the contract, not paid upfront (generally speaking). it's not the same as when they give signing bonuses to new contracts.

sams3, te, i'been watching this movie for the past whatever years. very closely may i add. and if you are going to tell me that this will end any differently than it has before then you're wasting your breath.

yeah, we'll see when they go 13-3 with fassel as the HC. look at tiki with fassell and look at tiki without fassell. look at the giants with fassell and without.

and look at buffalo with GG and without!

proof is in the pudding.

if you see things differently (buffalo being buffalo even after gg left and giants getting considerably better after fassell left) then it's not my problem.

sams3, TE...

1) Why has this Super Bowl coach been fired twice in a 3 year span?

2) Why was he out of the NFL since Oct 06--as you know, there have been coaching vacancies. Super Bowl coaches aren't exactly low-proile, so why didn't any other teams beat a path to his door?

Obviously, he interviews well. Snyder liked him in 2004. The Ravens liked him in 2004, and hired him.

Then he coached again, a stagnant Ravens offense... and was fired 2 years later.

Why is this mixed record better than the 3 year shot Williams got in Buffalo?

There's no reason for Snyder to announce every interview he's going to conduct. He's under no obligation to provide a report card to the Post about each candidate. When he decides, we'll find out.

Hey Brownwood26,m
Several of us did state from day one [right here on this blog] of Coach Joe's retirement we wanted Russ Grimm.

But if GW wants it, and won't stay as DC unless he gets it, then we are in for a real turnover.

Perhaps Danny simply wanted to bring in some new Offensive people, and leave the D to GW, and he is upset.

We just don't know...

"They are taking a lot of grief from other team''s people down there and, according to some league sources, the word "laughingstock" is being thrown around in regards to how the team is operating."

the only teams people qualified to make such statements are NE, NYG, DAL, SD, IND, SEA, JAC.

Posted by: mikejeffgillis | January 23, 2008 2:54 PM | Report abuse

The Redskins are a laughingstock. And what makes me sick here is I was drinking Redskin-coolaid a month ago as this team made a great playoff run. Dan Snyder has psychological issues. He's insane, impulsive, impatient and the wrong kind of personality to be in this position.
He's playing with fire not only with the coaches, players and the NFL, but with a fan base that he needs.
He needs to get over his petty need to be right, the boss and in control and do the right thing. ... Two years ago, the Skins hired Saunders and we all know what happened with that brilliant move.
If the Skins, after another spirited run and bonding after Taylor's death, blow this all up, I'd say the Skins will revert to form, finish 4-12 and likely be in a daze for the next 10 years.

Management 101 - Bring in your head guy and let him build his team. Don't bring in the junior people then put the leader in a position where he has to manage a bunch of people he didn't hire in the first place. The Redskins are mediocre at best and will continue to be so until they take a long term view and decide to build something.
