Rob Jackson cut, will be added to practice squad (updated)

Linebacker Rob Jackson has been released but will be added to the practice squad if he clears waivers, according to a source.

Jackson was a seventh-round draft pick in 2008 out of Kansas State and played mostly defensive end in pass rushing situations. This season, he was among the players who moved to linebacker in the Redskins' new 3-4 scheme, but was behind Andre Carter and Lorenzo Alexander on the depth chart.

Jackson has played in eight career games for the Redskins over the past two seasons with two tackles and one pass defended.

Jackson spent 11 weeks on the Redskins' practice squad last season before being signed to the active roster on Nov. 30 and playing in five regular season games.

Undrafted free agent tight end Logan Paulsen was also released, meaning the Redskins will likely go into the season with just two tight ends -- Chris Cooley and Fred Davis -- on the roster. Paulsen will be signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers, according to the source.

Offensive tackle Will Robinson tweeted that he was also among those released today.

Update, 2 p.m.: Rookie offensive lineman Selvish Capers has been released, according to a league source.

Capers, a seventh-round draft pick out of West Virginia, is another target for the Redskins' practice squad, according to the source. Capers played in 41 career games with 31 starts and earned second-team All-Big East honors as a senior for the Mountaineers.

Update, 2:57 p.m.: Rich Campbell of the Free Lance-Star reports that WR Shay Hodge and FB Carey Davis have been released, increasing the total list of players released or traded to 11. To get the league-mandated 53-man roster, 11 more players will have to be released before 6 p.m.

Getting that bad feeling I got last year when they tried to stash Chase Daniels on the practice squad. Here's hoping that Terence Austin and maybe Paulsen aren't on the stage out of Dodge by nightfall.

I'm confused -- supposedly they waived Chase outright and NO signed him to their practice squad the following day.

Will Robinson got Reapered.

And Tyrone Carter, keeping 3 safeties to start season.

Tryon traded to Colts.... prolly for a ham sammich to be named later.

Some interesting WRs out there available:
- TJ Houshmandzadeh
- Antonio Bryant
- Laveranues Coles
- Dexter Jackson
- Michael Clayton
- Marko Mitchell (had to put that one in there)

What do you think?

Rumours are flying about TJ Who'sYourMomma becoming a Skin.

Posted by: DC2AZ99 | September 4, 2010 1:38 PM | Report abuse

The really confusing team is AZ. Apparently they've told their two rookie QBs, Max Hall and John Skelton, that they made the roster. With Derek Anderson starting, I guess that means they try to unload Leinart.

Trade Fat Albert for Housh straight up. We'll take their head case if they take ours.

Posted by: kaasmaster | September 4, 2010 1:39 PM | Report abuse

I'm not gonna argue with someone that is clearly a little off. Brandon Lloyd is terrible and if you think otherwise than you are the one that is downright tard.
Brandon Lloyd had 8 receptions last year for 117 yards. That's just frickin' tearing it up.

Posted by: scampbell1975 | September 4, 2010 1:10 PM |

Let me help you out by connecting the dots:

1. Lloyd impressed the Skins to the point that they gave him a ridiculously generous contract.

2. Lloyd's current HC, Josh McDaniels is an acknowleded O guru - see Pats record setting O in 2007.

3. Lloyd had a good preseason.

4. McDaniel has designated him a starting WR.

So we have the "straight garbo" evaluation of a RI hamster vs. the take of a HC who has a glittering resume as a OC. You can't both be right.

I like our WR over all the guys on that list. Yes, I am most likely crazy.

And Darnell Jenkins was released in NE.

I like DJax, but not at what it will cost to get him here. He'll be a free agent next year, I don't think he'll cave, and neither will AJ.

So we traded Tryon.. not released him

Posted by: rachel216 | September 4, 2010 1:46 PM | Report abuse

Give it up Al. He has never been a good receiver. We cut him remember...even after Vinny gave him that contract. Are you really that stupid to try to use that argument to back up how good his skills are? Wow dude, you are a moron and a fool all rolled into one. Your connect the dots game came up with a picture of a turd floating in a bowl. You're saying that a good preseason makes him better than anyone we would pout at #2? I'm now convinced you are sports_guru and thus I will not acknowledge your existence any longer as I can feel myself getting stupider interacting with you.

Posted by: scampbell1975 | September 4, 2010 1:46 PM | Report abuse

Alligator Al, Gaffney #1, Royal #2, LLoyd #3. The rest of their receivers are rookies. So Lloyd "starting" in a 3 receiver set doesn't necessarily make him a very good receiver.

He's another Tebow. Overhyped because he "won" a national championship, doesn't have enough zip on the ball to make it as an NFL QB.

All you need to know about Brandon Lloyd is this:

In two season with the Redskins:

That's correct, booth. Player is waived, and is on the waiver wire for 24 hours. Detroit has first choice during 24 hours, since it had worst record last year. So only 4 teams can chose ahead of us for any player that is waived. After 24 hour period, if not claimed by another team, player is a free agent, and can sign with any team. If he signs to be on a practice squad, he can be claimed by any team who wants to sign him to their 53-man roster.

from PFT
The Seattle Seahawks released wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh on Saturday.

The move became official when the Seahawks were unable to find a trade partner for the 33-year-old wideout, whose $7 million 2010 salary is fully guaranteed. Mike Williams and Deion Branch now form Seattle's starting receiver duo. Deon Butler and rookie Golden Tate are next on the depth chart.

Though many rumors have connected him to the Vikings and even his former team, the Bengals, Houshmandzadeh's best fit on paper would be in Washington. The Redskins currently plan to start over-the-hill Joey Galloway opposite Santana Moss. Houshmandzadeh could fill the possession and slot receiver roles, replacing Galloway outside in two-receiver formations.

As NFL Network's Jason La Canfora pointed out on Twitter late Friday night, Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb has politicked for receiver help. And after signing a one-year "prove it" contract with the Skins, Houshmandzadeh could probably get notoriously reckless owner Daniel Snyder to pay big bucks to keep him off the free agent market in 2011.

I like Brandon Banks. If they could just coach him to hold onto the ball tighter, I think he could tear things up on punt returns and those little bubble screens they had him running on Thursday.

"Shanahan said if a team keeps half its draft picks, it's had a good draft."

That's the conventional wisdom. Of course some GMs are reluctant to let draft picks go (I think Vinny was one of those) and so keep them around after their sell-by date.

Q. How can anyone at Redskin Park declare ________ will be placed on the Practice Squad?

a. Each NFL team has an opportunity to claim _________. Thus there is absolutely no guarantee.

b. Secondly, you should never declare you want to keep someone on the PS. Unless of course it is a lie, and Bruce Allen is hoping to keep a player on the PS, he NOT declaring will be placed on the PS.

I think there is a certain code between GM's that if you declare you would like someone on your practice squad that barring a huge boner for the dude other GM's let 'em slide. Plus why sign a guy that has no experience with your system when you probably had enough guys go through your own camp learning your own system to put on your own PS? Just my thought. Could be wrong.

I think odds are quite high we bring in a WR... whether its housh or somebody else remains to be seen.

Circumstantial evidence: Austin to psquad, only two TE, only 3 rb(WP cut, RT psquad) kept. Seems like there is a spot there for somebody.... but we don't know about Roydell yet.

I also think BA will hawkeying the wire for Oline help.

I've been one of the biggest Kelly doubters, true enough. But I'd have MK12 on my team before Brandon Lloyd at any point in their careers.

Save for one decent season with San Farn, Lloyd has been utter trash, and hasn't shown anything that's ever changing the course.

But this preseason he has been "tearing it up for the Broncos". No doubt about that. under the mentorship of McDaniels he should emerge into a bonafide megastar.

With all the draft picks the 'skins are acquiring, they should see if they can package one of those along with another player to Denver for him.

The Houshmandzadeh situation highlights the wisdom of not jumping to make a deal for V. Jackson. We now have the potential opportunity (4 teams ahead of us could pick him up off of waivers) to sign a similar quality WR without having to give up any draft picks, and without having to cave to overly extravagant salary demands. There is no suspension issue with Houshmandzadeh either.

Just to clarify:

"Each NFL team may keep up to eight members on its "practice squad" in addition to the 53-member main roster. They consist mostly of rookies who were cut in training camps and borderline NFL-caliber players. Both rookies and young veterans are eligible for the practice squad. However, a player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons, or if he has accrued a year of NFL experience (six or more games on a club's 53-man active roster or official Injured Reserve list.) If the player was on the active list for fewer than 9 games during their "only Accrued Season(s)", he maintains his eligibility for the practice squad."

"Players can be promoted to the active roster of their current team or to that of any other team. They have free agent status and can sign with any team they wish without compensation to the original team, if they are released from the practice squad."

I also don't see Carter as a sucessfull 3-4 OLB. Here's a solution with possibilities.

Someone last night was wondering about potentially going after Logan Mankins. He would be a nice addition to our O-line, but I don't like the idea of giving up a draft pick for him. We're already short on draft picks for next year, and we have a lot of holes to fill for the future.

I came up with the idea of trading Carter for him. He might be willing to void his no-trade clause to go to a team like the Patriots. He would be better suited to the Pats' D.

I agree, he is eligible. But I think he would be a poor selection. There are not that many uses for the 3rd string QB. Very unlikely to keep a 4th string qb also. That place is more important for someone to fill in on ST, like a LB or WR, as well as OL and DL to replace someone who gets hurt during season.
