Rogers Bounces Back after Rough Monday

Cornerback Carlos Rogers is a mainstay at offseason workouts, and when he wasn't around for Monday's first session, Coach Jim Zorn said, "That was one of the surprises."

Rogers, though, was back today and said he was sick yesterday. "Just throwing up," he said. All's well now, and the fifth-year player from Auburn put in his endorsement for these workouts.

"It's real important," Rogers said. "Any time you can be with the team, and we're putting in defenses, then it refreshes your mind for defenses that we did last year. You come out here, some stuff you're going to remember. If you're just playing single, or you're playing cover-2, that's easy. But some of the trap things, this can help your mind be fresh when you come to training camp. You don't have to go through the coaching of it. It's automatic. You sit there, and you're like, 'I don't have to write this down in my notebook, because I know it.'

"I enjoy being around the guys. This is fun. In the offseason, instead of sitting at home doing nothing, just working out and chilling, I'd rather be here. I don't have no problem being here."

Rogers is coming off a season in which he set a career high with 24 passes defended, though his shaky hands yielded only two interceptions. He now will be paired with DeAngelo Hall, who joined the Redskins midway through last year and was signed as a free agent in the offseason. Veteran Shawn Springs was released, and is now with New England, and veteran Fred Smoot will likely serve as the third cornerback, with rookie Kevin Barnes, a third-round pick from Maryland, likely to make the team.

"I think we'll work together good," Rogers said. "DeAngelo's a good player, and he'll do real good. We should be all set back there."

How many points and potential victories has this guy cost the team over the years with drops ? Pro Bowl? That's a joke at this point.

Although, reading between the lines, this Svrluga guy seems to be slighting Tryon in the fourth CB spot. That's criticism of the Skins FO right there. Geez, just keep your opinions to yourselves, Fourth Estate.

His OTAs should only consist of him standing in front of a throwing machine catching balls and one hour of checking Santana up and down the field, while Santana gives him random double moves.

The Redskins secondary only run Man, Tampa Two, Cover 3 and 4 maybe 5 trap packages. He should already know those like the back of his hand.

It cracks me up to see these dudes up here who define themselves based on hating JLC. Then, once he leaves, they can't give it up. Their hate is still their identity.

The one, though was Marc Fisher's last column. It really drew the crazies out to dance on his grave, and he wasn't even dead -- he's just moving to a more important and influntial position on the Post. None of them, though, had a screen name based on hating him.

I'm not a huge Carlos fan, but he really showed great improvements last year in a lot of area -- INTs being an obvious exception.

I'm not sure he will ever be a true ballhawk, but we should see his progress continue. Remember, guys tend to have breakout season in contract years

Now that J-LA is at the NFL network, how many times will the name "Leigh Torrence" be mentioned on the air???

if CR becomes a corner that is elite in every spot except the INT mark I would live with him @ the no 2 CB for the rest of his career.

Rogers is a solid corner. He doesn't get beat all the time and plays the run well. Not afraid to mix it up. People who trash him should go look at some tape of 2006 with the likes of Kenny Wright and what not.

This was from nfl.com

The wild card remains Mike Williams, who said Monday that he is down to 381 pounds, from 450 in February and 404 in late April. The former No. 4 overall draft pick hasn't taken an NFL snap in three seasons, but the Redskins are impressed by his off-the-field preparations and his enthusiasm.

"He's rusty at the comfort level of being back in it," Zorn said. "He has the furthest to come, but he has tremendous talent."

Williams gave an update on his weight plan, saying he's enjoying turkey loaf instead of meat loaf and is researching the benefits of bison to satisfy his yearning for the occasional steak. He also wanted the world to know that players' wives -- specifically his wife, Enisha, and teammate Derrick Dockery's wife, Emma -- don't have the best of diets, either.

"I'm going to bust this myth," Williams said. "And I want this to be aired out. Don't let them fool you. We eat much better than they eat. ... They bring cookies. ... They sneak out. We were out there working in Arizona, they sneak out and go to In-N-Out Burger. Me and Derrick are sitting in the apartment, and we sniff, sniff -- 'Who's been eating burgers?' They're so bad."

I've wondered about that also, clark. How tough is it to concentrate, and watch the ball all the way into your hands. That's what the throwing machine is for. Give him 8 more INT's last year and he might make the pro bowl.

What will be really interesting to see is if the hamsters will follow JLa to the new digs on NFL.com. I am sure they will give him a blog there. So the hate can continue.....

I agree with you, alex. I just don't understand why he doesn't work more on receiving the ball. He had numerous opportunities last year. Some were not easy, but some were. I don't know if it is an eye-hand coordination thing, or what. But I do like him in our backfield.

I'm not disagreeing with you, Red, I guess I'm on a thin line of difference. Sometimes child pornagraphers are selling the stuff, sometimes they are buying the movies and CD's. I'm saying that the people actually making the SJK are the lowest of the low.

Posted by: frediefritz | June 2, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

I think it also makes a difference if you're just a stupid teenager who takes half nude pictures of yourself and puts them on facebook just because it's cool. Those kids need to go to "grow up camp" where they're instructed on what is absolutely stupid, and therefore shouldn't be done. The true child porn people should be treated just like Red says, assuming they go through a full evaluation of the evidence (i.e. they prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that it's not some weird worm/virus on your computer where you had no freaking idea it was there).

"I'm not a huge Carlos fan, but he really showed great improvements last year in a lot of area -- INTs being an obvious exception.

He's not a hands guy, that's true. But most INTs by defensive backs come as a direct or indirect result of pressure from the front seven. The QB throws to the wrong guy or simply doesn't see the DB because he's preoccupied with avoiding the sack. So the DB gets credit for the INT when it was really the DE or DT or blitzing LB who made it happen.

On the other hand, it's tight coverage by the DBs that causes the QB to hold the ball too long, resulting in the sack -- for which the lineman or blitzer gets credit.

You know who I will be watching this season? Kareem Moore, the safety. He's a ballhawk, too.

Posted by: Samson151 | June 3, 2009 12:12 AM | Report abuse

I know Rogers is a good coverage guy and a good tackler for a corner, but man, it is so frustrating when he drops one of those potential game changing interceptions. I think the difference between good and great is "great" makes the catch.

By the way, I am not sure the cure for dropping balls is spending hours a day with the ball machine. My personal opinion is it is a lack of hand/wrist strength that causes him to drop so many balls. Football players work on so much during the offseason and hands are so very important for receivers, running backs and corners but I think there's not enough focus on this.

Posted by: RedSkinHead | June 3, 2009 1:03 AM | Report abuse

I think Los and Deangelo have a chance to real good or real bad. I know Deangelo likes to jump routes too many times and well we know Los likes to drop easy int's. Let's hope they gel together and make our pass rush better.
