Rogers Is Hurt; Redskins Trail 7-0

One word for one quarter: Disaster. In one quarter, the Redskins failed to score -- again -- on a first-and-goal situation, made a questionable decision to go for it on fourth down from the 1, made another questionable decision to accept a penalty that gave Detroit another shot on third down, and allowed the Lions a 99-yard drive.

How did all this happen? The Redskins worked Santana Moss back into the offense immediately, and quarterback Jason Campbell found him for a 15-yard gain on the first offensive play. That sparked an efficient drive that covered 75 yards, featuring a 21-yard gain to Moss and a nice catch by receiver Malcolm Kelly to set up first-and-goal from the 9.

From there: Campbell couldn't find Kelly on a lob play, Ladell Betts gained two yards. On third down from the 7, Clinton Portis took a dump pass and lunged toward the left pylon, but couldn't score. After some deliberation, Coach Jim Zorn -- aware of four red zone failures last week -- elected to go for it. But Portis, running over the stronger left side of the line, was stuffed, and the Lions took over at the 1.

That would seem to be a perfect situation for the Redskins' defense. But after tackle Kedric Golston was called for offsides, allowing the Lions to get out from the shadow of their own end zone, Detroit started moving the ball. The key play: On third and four from the Washington 33, Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford looked for eight end Will Heller, who dropped a potential first down. But the Lions were called for offensive pass interference. Rather than forcing Detroit to kick a 50- or 51-yard field goal, Zorn elected to push the Lions back.

Stafford made Zorn pay for the decision. He scrambled after being flushed from the pocket by defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, a 22-yard gain. One play later, the Lions scored a touchdown as Stafford found receiver Bryant Johnson, who beat cornerback Carlos Rogers for a 21-yard score. Worse still: Rogers sprained his ankle on the play, and his return is questionable.

Danny Smith for Head Coach! Feel the excitement!

Posted by: JohnnyRyde | September 27, 2009 1:55 PM | Report abuse

Coming into this game, Stafford had a 40.5 QB rating.

So far, he has a 113.2 QB rating against our D.

Smith has run 9 times for 69 yards against our D.

Portis/Betts have 4 carries for 3 yards.

Embarrasing.

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 27, 2009 2:06 PM | Report abuse

If Jason Reid and LaCanfora would stop being so negative and biased this never would have happened. I hope that some of the regulars on here who constantly defend this dysfunctional disaster of an organization, and who constantly ridicule anyone who dares to criticize it (you know who you are), shut their mouths for good now. Until we get a new owner, we will get this crap year after year. Boycott, it's what a TRUE fan would do.

Posted by: YourPsychologist | September 27, 2009 2:07 PM | Report abuse

alan, the Lions were supposed to allow the Skins look good too remember? It's inconsistent at the least to call for Zorn's head and not Blache's. They are a below average team that all coaches would have a tough time turning into a winning team.

The culture of indiscipline and entitlement in this organization is appalling and will likely manifest itself in an embarrassing loss to the Detroit Lions today. Having begun my relationship with and remained loyal to this franchise since the George Allen era, I am sad to say I can longer justify spending 3 and 1/2 hours of my Sunday watching this collection of highly suspect "professionals." Until Mr. Snyder relinquishes control of this franchise, we must be content with mediocrity at best in any given season. I am going to go do some yard work.

How long have the Redskins had the ball this half? 5 minutes?

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | September 27, 2009 2:22 PM | Report abuse

This team is completely unmotivated and with zero confidence. Not even medium. That folks is coaching.

Portis should have been inactive because he is not health and to show the rest of the team that no one is above the team. Another example that Zorn has no stones.

THE REDSKINS HAVE NOT SCORED A TD NOW IN 10 QUARTERS. In 2 quarters against the lowly Lions, they have given up 110 yards rushing and this is a team that averaged 45 yrds running per game.
BRILLIANT!!!

I wish the media and some fans would stop talking about 'potential this' and 'we could be good if' that. Let's face it. This is a mediocre team. Mediocre due to poor decision-making and poor management.

980 is going to be off the chain today after the game and this whole week. All hell is going to break loose like nothing we've seen around here in a while. We're being DOMINATED!!

I am noticing the Skins D does much better after a time out (Skins or Lions) and/or a commercial break.. That would mean they are sucking wind.. You'd think they'd be in shape by now..

I have followed the discussion on the WaPo Skins forums for a very long time and I have tried to be as reasonable in my thinking about the team, management, and players as possible. This is my first post and I am sorry to say that this is the most embarrassing display of football I have ever seen. There is plenty of blame to go around, but I hope that this team and coaching staff at least have some self respect to go down fighting. Yes, I think they will lose this game.

Why are they not putting Moore in? At this point he cannot be worse the LL.

Does anyone think we should have spent the haynesworth money on some lineman?

To all season ticket holders who are unfortunately "forced" to waste half their weekend and several thousands of dollars to witness this crap in person, please do yourself and the future of the franchise a favor and hit the Owner where it counts the most:

BOYCOTT HIS CONCESSION sTANDS.

That is where he generates the revenue to make such unbelievably boneheaded decisions to sign guys like Haynesworth, Hall, J. Taylor, etc. and neglect such obvious needs like the O-line.

BOYCOTT HIS CONCESSIONS STANDS.

The Eagles don't even have their starting QB and they already have 24 points...lol

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | September 27, 2009 2:25 PM | Report abuse

I guess Zorn plays defense and cant't get a score from the 1 yard line. I suppose it was Gibbs fault also.

Posted by: Redskins001 | September 27, 2009 2:25 PM | Report abuse

sounds like Billick is auditioning for Head Coach.... Too bad Snyder couldnt go up to the Fox booth and sign him for the 2nd half.

Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | September 27, 2009 2:26 PM | Report abuse

Wonder if Bill Cowher would even consider taking over. Doubt Zorn will be back next season.

Does anyone think its Ironic that our D-coordinator was a D-line coach and we still leave the nicest pockets for the other team to pass from?
98 is on a knee... good lets lose all those players that were going to make this an elite D.

have you seen the Skins rushing yardage?? I would say thats a function of a poor OLine.

Yes the line looks bad. Both lines do. What game are you watching?

The writing was on the wall in game 1. While most teams spent the 1st Q of the season shaking rust off their offenses, the G-Men shredded our D. The Rams piled up rushing yards and moved the ball OK.

And this is just ugly.

Posted by: OrganicWater | September 27, 2009 2:33 PM | Report abuse

Zorn should spend halftime in front of the men's room mirror chewing HIMSELF out.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | September 27, 2009 2:33 PM | Report abuse

The only person responsible for this debacle is Daniel Snyder. Its not the coaches or the players. Snyder has turned this once well respected franchise to the laughing stock of the NFL. Since Snyder took over the Redskins, its all been down hill. Multiple coaching changes, bad drafts, and terrible free agent signings. I feel sorry the fans who own season tickets and have to pay for this pile of cr_p. As long as Snyder is in charge, this is what we get. This is an all time low.

Did you see the 99 yard TD drive that included two 3rd down conversions of 10+ yards? The OL was on the bench when that happened. Did you see the 4th and goal run left... that was a real surprise call? EVERYBODY saw that coming.

Posted by: vegasskinsfan | September 27, 2009 2:35 PM | Report abuse

Lets review the real problem

Who hires a guy who is retired named Marty.
Who hires a guy who was a college coach named spurrier.
Who hires a guy who had been retired for a long time named gibbs.
Who hires a guy named zorn who was never a HC or Coordinator.

So that means next we will get a old coach out of football.

Cant be Cower or Shanahan because they no how big a joke snyder is.

It will have to be someone desperate for a coaching gig. Yeah thats it Billick or Fassell.

Man I cant wait.

If you guys really think firing Zorn is the answer, you might consider the alternative.

Posted by: Redskins001 | September 27, 2009 2:37 PM | Report abuse

I have to laugh at people saying "this isn't on JC" already.

The idiot has already thrown two dropped interceptions.

We've seen what rookie Stafford has done. For the Jets today, rookie Sanchez has run for one TD and thrown for another.

If only Dan Snyder was a better owner, perhaps Jason Campbell would fulfill his self-proclaimed potential, eh?

The bottom line: If this team doesn't do a 180 and win this game today, I think Wilbon is right and Zorn is on the next plane out of town.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | September 27, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

The players have quit on Zorn. I am quitting on Daniel Snyder.

Posted by: jimluonghotmailcom | September 27, 2009 2:42 PM | Report abuse

Looks like Zorn is coaching desperate. Going for it on 4th and 1 and taking a penalty that he shouldn't. This is all a direct result of the owner....Maybe we just put Vinny in as coach that would make snyder happy.

Posted by: Redskins001 | September 27, 2009 2:45 PM | Report abuse

I believe completely that EVERYONE ON THE SKINZ MUST BE KICKED IN THE FACE then pissed on for our team to get it together....if that means the LIONS.....then so be it

Posted by: JasonCampbellisnotproblem | September 27, 2009 2:49 PM | Report abuse

Wait a second. Maybe Zorn can motivate his guys? Go Zorn...Snyder still sucks.

Posted by: Redskins001 | September 27, 2009 2:49 PM | Report abuse

The only person that can save this franchise is Ted Leonis. TD Moss!!! God the Lions are bad.

Posted by: jimluonghotmailcom | September 27, 2009 2:51 PM | Report abuse

SERIOUSLY...Jason la Canfora....when on NFL network...engage in healthy criticism...speak the truth...Redskins are hopeless...if they don't get it together in the next 2 quarters...im quitin the skinz..for bout 5 years....
