Roll Call for Practice

Barry Svrluga has the early report from practice:

Clinton Portis, LaRon Landry and Carlos Rogers have returned to practice. Malcolm Kelly, Shawn Springs, Ladell Betts, and Jason Taylor are sitting it out. Santana Moss is in sweats but has not yet participated.

I have a bad feeling Moss isn't going to play that game. If that happens, we'll see how creative the Z-man is at spreading the wealth.

Moss's hammy always scares the hell out of me. I hope he can hold up thru the regular season and playoffs or this offense is in trouble.

Thanks, nate (from the previous thread). Took a break to see why the Capital Weather Dudes haven't delivered a game-time forecast. (I think the high Monday is supposed to be 60, with a low in the 40s--no precip.)
As for that whole thing about the Redskins outcome predicting the election outcome...Bill Hofheimer from ESPN and Steve Hirdt from Elias Sports Bureau claim that the streak didn't die in '04....that it's predicated on who gets the most votes and hence would still be active...I think they're stretching a bit, but I throw it out there for you guys to decide.

Posted by: CindyBoren | October 31, 2008 11:56 AM | Report abuse

I am excited for Monday. Win or loose, it's a great test! We'll know a lot more about our squad after this.

We've had the nagging injuries all along, but the big-name starters have been healthy enough to play so far. .. makes me wonder how long we can hold up!

Go Skins!

I am interested to see, if Moss isn't able to go, how many times Campbell targets Thomas. I am as big a Santana fan as anyone, but it will be fun to Thomas get down field and be able to use that body (legally, I know he's had a problem with the illegal part) to fight for position on jump balls.

Moss will be alright for this game and then get the rest during the bye week. The key will be if he feels it getting tight up during the game to shut it down.

I hate the word bust too...especially when it's being used out of context.

The kid is coming off a knee injury. While I hate that we drafted him, you have to see what he brings to the table before labeling him a bust. It's ridiculous to talk about any of these rookies until after the 2010 season. It's not like we needed him to come in and start this season. BE PATIENT!

Posted by: brownwood26 | October 31, 2008 12:15 PM | Report abuse

If our rushing defense is good...we'll be fine. Big Ben is tough but he tends to make mistakes even with a little time. Campbell has proved he won't make mistakes. Big game but definitely not our biggest so far this year. Dallas and Philly meant so much more.

Intresting stat found over on FoxSports that I haven't seen or heard anywhere

"The Redskins have 107 offensive plays of 10 or more yards this season — most in the league."

Posted by: fbchick | October 31, 2008 12:24 PM | Report abuse

Good idea to keep Santana rested. Unless they are installing some sort of new plays for him, seems like unnecessary wear and tear (same reason I have no problem with Portis not having to take hits).

So does this mean that Rock Cartwright and Chris Horton are ret-t'-go?

Posted by: svxcountry1 | October 31, 2008 12:17 PM

Agreed...but only from the standpoint that those are division games and if the Skins can win at least 2 of their 3 division home games 4-2 in division likely wins you tie-breakers at the end of the season. But you have to admit that a win on MNF against the Steelers will go a long way towards getting this team respect and credibility.

Then lets hope he's our version of David Tyre.

Posted by: Devo2 | October 31, 2008 12:41 PM | Report abuse

I disagree - this is almost as big a game as the Dallas and Philly games for these reasons:

1. We want to go into the bye at 7-2, not 6-3.
2. Our offense has been less than effective since Philly - we have to have a victory here that shows that we can win against a strong team.
3. A loss here sends us into the bye with big questions about who we are as a team - a win says - "this team WILL compete the rest of the year"
4. 7-2 is bigger than 6-3 for the simple reason that - let's say we only win one of three home games against the East - that means that to pretty much GUARANTEE the playoffs, we've got to run the table against Balt, SF, SEA and Cincy. Not impossible, but puts pressure on us.

At this point, we just assume that Malcolm Kelly is missing practice. If Kelly actually practices, that is blog-worthy news.

I don't know if Zorn has a "you-need-to-practice-by-a-certain-day-of-the-week-or-you-don't-play" policy. If he does it should not apply to a guy like Santana. Treat the hammy with tender loving care, then unleash him on Monday.

Sit Santana !! You calm that Hammie from barking. The fact that it acted up now right when you have that bye week is the tell tale sign. Don't take your chances with hamstrings especially on Santana. I wouldn't even have him walking right now. To heck if it is the Steelers, I don't care if it's the 2001 Ravens. Don't do it. We need him in the best possible shape for that NFC East homestand desperately. Skins are crazy if they do play him. This could easily be the biggest story line of the season for us, simply because we are so thin at this position.

AL Zeke, let's say 2.5 sacks for Wilson and, um, 2 for Erasmus.

To go with 3.5 for Andre Carter.

Maybe one each for Golston and Monty.

And a couple to spread around our LBs.

Heck, how about one for Carlos, too, on a corner blitz?

Sound about right?

Reading through the earlier post about re-signing JC...

The difference between re-signing JC now and re-signing JC in the future could be massive. It could be the difference between giving him a David Garrard/Tony Romo-type contract and giving him a Ben Roethlisberger-type contract. We know we have an absolute stud at QB, and right now his value is about as low as it gets for a guy of his talents -- simply because he's inexperienced in late season (or postseason) heroics. It would be extremely smart for the Redskins to take care of him as soon as possible.

And as far as "did you ever expect that Snyder wouldn't sign him?", just think of Antonio Pierce. All we heard with that was, "let the market decide what he's worth, then we'll match." It backfired. The team should look into locking up Campbell as soon as possible (not to mention Carlos Rogers as well, because he's in line for a monster payday if he keeps up his current pace from this year).

Portis wins Fedex Ground player of the week.

Posted by: BeantownGreg | October 31, 2008 1:49 PM | Report abuse

Kelly is going to be out through the bye week. They shut him down completely after the Browns game to give the knee a chance to heal through the bye week break. If it responds, great. If not, they are going to make a more drastic move and IR him and go into the knee. This has been widely reported, even here I think.

I expect to see more 4 wide sets by the Redskins Monday night. Both empty backfield (with a TE) or with an RB (no TE aligned next to the Tackle). Basically 4 or 5 of these 6 lined up as recivers: 'Tana, ARE, Thomas, Cooley, Davis, Thrash. If its 4/6, Portis is in...if its 5/6, he is out. I think this will accomplish 3 things: 1) It will force the Steelers to account for more receivers taking them away from the center of the field...it will force their LBers to cover more width of the field. 2) It will allow Redskins receivers to eith engage 1 v 1 or find holes in the zone against Steelers cover guys. Steelers are banged up in the secondary both at CB and S. 3) Will allow Redskins offense to attack a more dispersed Steelers D in the run game.
Steelers are very good at run blitzing and maintaining gap discipline against base offensive sets and swarming to the ball. Spreading the field 4 wide forces them to cover more guys and makes it harder and farther for them to swarm to the ball.

As much as a Pittsburgh win would mean with a 7-2 record at the bye, losing a Santana Moss or Chris Samuel prior to an even bigger game against Dallas would be worse...Dallas will likely be 5-4 and will have Romo and others back for a game to essentially save their season.

Even though we're at home vs. Dallas, it will be a very tough, physical game where we'll need as many of our top players as close to 100% as possible (Moss, Portis, Samuels, Rogers, Springs, and possibly Betts). A win over Dallas is worth two games in the standings plus gives us a tiebreaker. The Pittsburgh game only impacts our win-loss record and the tiebreaker for record against common opponents which is much lower down the list.

If Moss is 80%, he's not going to be as effective and will be more likely to have a setback on a chilly evening. I'd like to beat Pittsburgh, but not at the cost of jeopardizing the rest of our season.
