Ron Springs Is Doing Well
Just received an email confirmation that Ron Springs, former Cowboy running back and Shawn's dad, underwent a successful kidney transplant. He was in dire need of a replacement, and, as we reported in The Washington Post many months ago, his former Cowboy teammate, Everson Walls - Shawn's godfather - was a match and donated his kidney.
An update and press conference is scheduled at a Dallas hospital tomorrow, and, pending their condition, Ron and Emerson may even participate. At one point Shawn offered to end his career and give his father a kidney - Ron declined - and the search for a match within the family was lengthy. Ron also has diabetes, had a foot amputated and required intense dialysis sessions.
To say he's been through a lot would be a a gross understatement. I had a wonderful time chatting with him a year ago for a feature story I did and he is someone beloved by former Cowboys and Redskins alike. Shawn is a great guy as well, and we're hoping for all the best for the Springs family.
