Ron Springs

Cornerback Shawn Springs has been excused from Redskins Park - he wasn't here yesterday- to be with his father, Ron, 50, a former NFL player who is hospitalized in Dallas.

According to published reports, Ron Springs slipped into a coma during a procedure to have a cyst removed from his elbow Saturday and is not doing well at all. Some reports quote anonymous former teammates as saying Springs is on a respirator.

It's a tough blow for a family that thought it had escaped some life-threatening health concerns when Ron Springs had successful kidney replacement surgery last year (longtime friend and former teammate Everson Walls was the donor).

Obviously, all of our best wishes go to Shawn and we're hoping for the best.

Definitely a man who will fight to the very end. You only hope that Shawn will be in uniform on Sunday but in cases like these you have to think family first. Then again, David Macklin was brought here to serve in nickel situation. I would assume Smoot would start if Shawn decided it was best to be at his father's side.

My prayers and thoughts are with Shawn and Ron. Ron was shown at a Dallas game just a few weeks ago and appeared to be doing well. Very sad.

Anybody else wish we had sent the extremely mediocre and mostly irrelevant Betts to Tampa for a mid round pick or freaking O-line help?!?!? and elevated Mason back to the roster. I'm sorry, but Cartwright and Mason can easily do what Betts is doing for us and I'd rather of the pick or an olineman.

SJK SJK SJK SJK.

Betts cannot be traded. It would be refused by the league as it would put us over the cap.

Jack, thanks for proposing that ridiculous trade. Nicely done. You can do better however. How about Betts and Brunell for a First? How about Lloyd, Mason, and Collins for a 2nd and a 3rd?

Give it another shot....

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | October 16, 2007 1:36 PM | Report abuse

Greg, you're insane if you think Betts and Brunell would get a 1st from anybody.......and Collins and Lloyd are worthless, Mason is a practice squad guy who nobody has even tried to sign for nothing, a package of Collins, LLoyd, and Mason might get a 7th at most. Randy Moss got a 4th round pick. McGahee got a swap of seconds and a third. Thomas Jones got a second. Nobody gives up high picks for nothing except us.

Posted by: Jack | October 16, 2007 1:42 PM | Report abuse

Need I go on:

Shaub, 2nd round pick
Green, conditional late rounder
Welker, two mid-round picks
Macfarlend, 2nd rounder
Darwin Walker, 6th rounder

The absolute best that a Betts and Brunell package would get is a second and that would be highly unlikely.

Diabetes is awful. I'm type 2, but am lucky that I've been able to keep my sugar under control with diet and exercise.

People don't realize how much starch there is in what they eat and how almost everything is loaded with high fructose corn syrup.

My Dad is also type 2 and has had 2 surgeries on his eyes and one on his carotid artery due in part to the damage high blood sugar inflicted on him.

Be careful of what you eat and drink folks.

Godspeed to Mr. Springs.

Jack, I was being sarcastic because proposing trades, is ASSININE!!!!

Have a CLUE....

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | October 16, 2007 1:48 PM | Report abuse

Oh my bad, your saying nobody like Tampa, who just traded for Michaal Bennet would trade anything for Betts. I get it now, so I was ridiculous in thinking that Betts could get us a couple backup lineman or a late 3rd or 4th round pick. I gotcha. Yeah that probably is silly.....

Posted by: Jack | October 16, 2007 1:49 PM | Report abuse

Asinine? This is a football blog right? What should I talk about the health of some guy that I'll never meet? or the Redskins? And I would rather talk about things that could help us before the 4 PM trade deadline than focus on another 2nd half collapse or that fact that our budding star of a young QB has a bunch of guys who can't catch right now to throw to.

I am still taking my meds.

Posted by: not Jack | October 16, 2007 1:55 PM | Report abuse

No Jack actually trading Betts would put us OVER, the cap. Get it. OVER. Not under, but OVER. And guess what, the NFL FROWNS on that. Crazy I know.

Not to mention that we'd be trading Betts when his stock couldn't be lower, and replacing him with a guy, Rock, who is a better kick returner than running back, and with Mason, who is a complete unknown.

Nicely done. But keep thinking that you're arguement makes sense......

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | October 16, 2007 1:56 PM | Report abuse

If you're thinking of trading a RB to Tampa, why not make a perfect match and ship Clinton "Yo Job's Yo Cred-it" Portis back down to FLA where he likes to be anyway. With TB in dire need of a RB, I am certain we could get 2 serviceable linemen in exchange or at least a 3rd rounder.

Posted by: Wayne P. | October 16, 2007 1:56 PM | Report abuse

Sorry for the anger, but I hate losing first of all, and I hate reading that while other teams are making moves to help them and we are certainly in the mix in the NFC playoff picture that we have no intention of making any moves to help our team. Even if the injuries to Wade, Heyer, and Rabach aren't long-term right now, we're not even halfway through the season and its pretty obvious what happens if another O-lineman goes down.....what if Samuels tweaks his knee again? I'm just frustrated to read Joe say they have no intention of making any moves when you have a back in Betts that has value and we're not using much at all or Brunell sitting there. You don't think Miami wouldn't send a backup tackle for Brunel for a 1 or two year bridge to John Beck, or Tampa would have sent us a backup lineman and a late rounder for Betts before they made the Bennett deal. This is the problem with or franchise instead of being with the coaches "raking his brain" on how to fix things with their roster, a GM would be on the phone finding some quality options by dealing from our surplus to other teams needs.

Posted by: Wayne P. | October 16, 2007 2:06 PM | Report abuse

Greg, how do you know we'd be over the cap if we made a deal? Everyone always says that about us but we keep signing people and we keep making moves, it all depends on how the deal is structured.

And while I feel bad Springs' Dad isn't doing great, a lot of other people's Dad's aren't doing well either, and some people don't have Dads and some other people are sick themselves. Nice article thanks for the info, I'll pray for all the sick people tonight but I'm on here to talk about the Skins and a playoff run.

If trades aren't made at the deadline, someone will complain.

If the Redskins trade away all their draft picks for veterens, someone will complain.

If the Redskins sign a FA with a steep price tag, someone will complain.

If the Redskins cut someone in the preseason, someone will complain.

If the Redskins mark up the price on tickets and parking, someone will complain.

If a play is called and it doesn't work as planned, someone will complain.

SHUT DOWN THE WHINE MODE.

I don't understand people who come on here and say don't be negative, don't whine, don't talk about possible trades, the coaching staff, the FO, or the Receiver....after a loss what else is there to talk about? I praise them when they win and I criticize when they lose. As soon as we are a perennial playoff team/super bowl contender I will cease all criticism and be purely positive. But until then, the recent history of this franchise deserves criticism and this is the place that is built for reaction and team discussion. How much fun would it be if all we said was, "Gee Sunday sucked, but I know we are still the best and we're gonna win every game from here on out."?

Posted by: Jack | October 16, 2007 2:15 PM | Report abuse

Nate, what do I look like Vinny Cerrato?

Sure, I'll do that but you also have to come up on your end as well.

I'll need a 12th round pick last year, as well as a 25th round pick in 2012?

Deal....or.....No Deal....

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | October 16, 2007 2:15 PM | Report abuse

The Redskins need to forget about bringing in any other players and focus on the personnel they have now. If they need another player due to injury, IR somebody, and bring up a player from the practice squad. I don't see the big deal trading at the deadline anyway. When was the last blockbuster trade in the NFL? Success in the NFL is obtained by the draft, great coaching, and making the necessary free agent signings.

Can someone sack Jack attack?

Posted by: DO IT NOW!!!! | October 16, 2007 2:18 PM | Report abuse

Jack,
I agree (for once anyway). One of the best things about RI is its a one stop shop. You can talk about football (or almost anything else) and you don't need to go to another blog to talk SMACK to fans from other teams because they come here.

And we have fun doing it, right?

Posted by: Stumped | October 16, 2007 2:19 PM | Report abuse

So if we traded a 3rd or 4th round pick for a backup lineman, you'd be happy? Then when the draft comes, you'd be bashing the fo for not keeping picks.
The other part of this is, you have to have a trading partner. There is a reason you see maybe 1 deadline deal per year.

For example, I think its ridiculous that McNabb, Andy Reid, and the Eagles are getting pounded in Philly they way they are. They are having a down year after a decade of excellence and flat out domination of this division. They have earned a pass from criticism for a season or two. Now if they go into the tank like we have for 15 years then they deserve to get berated mercilessly, but for now, they shouldn't be anything said about them, they had a tough run so far but I for one have faith they'll turn it around and contend again if not this year, then next. They've earned that, the Skins haven't! I'm jealous of that success, and I for one believe we should expect it of our team, we have been the model of dysfunction for years.

Posted by: Jack | October 16, 2007 2:26 PM | Report abuse

I bet I could successfully argue that Barry Sanders would not have broken off some of the most thrilling runs in NFL history if he'd had a solid-performing offensive line. Half of the moves he made and tackles he broke were in his own backfield.

Now's Clinton's chance.

YO JOB'S YO CREDIT!!!

Posted by: Jack | October 16, 2007 01:49 PM

The only silly part is thinking Betts would earn anything higher than sixth rounder at best. He only had ONE good year, and that was a salary drive year. He's an ordinary back, who could work in a good system as a pass catcher on third down, and no one pays high picks or decent linemen for one of those.

Brunell? Hmm. Someone might trade a UFA for him.

Jack...

You are an irrational boob...

Who would you trade on this team that is tradeable at this point of the season. It's not that you criticize the team...we all do, but your criticism doesn't make sense. My summary of the season thus far is that the last game was lost by players who didn't make plays...the Giants game was lost by coaching errors and players who didn't make plays.

But those are the same players who made plays against Miami, Detroit and Philly.

Posted by: sicwidit | October 16, 2007 2:43 PM | Report abuse

I would add to irrational boob that you are an insensitive a$$. But, be that as it may, I would never wish the complications of type 2 diabetes on you inspite of the fact that I've never met you.

Posted by: Larry Bud | October 16, 2007 2:59 PM | Report abuse

CORKCZAR, don't tell me Betts won't get better than a 6th rounder because then you are fooling yourself. Betts is the best back we have. Portis is done. If Joe puts Betts in and stops acting like the old fool that he is, we would win more games.

I also want to point out that CORKCZAR is a jerk who knows nothing about football.
