Roster Ramblings

With such a whirlwind of news the past two days, we haven't really had a chance to breakdown the roster as I would have hoped. So here are a few thoughts and observations...

The Secondary: It's young. Real young. Reed Doughty, entering his third season, is the most experienced safety. Fellow starter LaRon Landry is entering his second year, as is reserve Justin Hamilton, while the other two are rookies (Kareem Moore and Chris Horton). There's going to be a lot of learning on the fly.

O Line: After the Jansen/Heyer shake up, you've got to think that Heyer is in essence the backup LT now. If something happened to Chris Samuels, I'd imagine Heyer would shift to the left, and Jansen would go back to RT. It will be very interesting to see if rookie Chad Rinehart ends up as a guard at this level - the more the preseason went on, the more I wondered about his ability to play tackle - and I still think if they got short on tackles at some point that guard Jason Fabini, a tackle most of his career, would shift back there.

Depth on D: Jim Zorn is obviously an offensive-minded coach, but he did the D proper and gave them the extra roster spot. It worked out that the 53-man roster includes 24 players on offense, 26 on defense, and three specialists. I thought it would go the other way, but then again, that was based on them keeping 6 WRs, which I figured was imperative given the stalled progress of rookie WRs Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. But given the fact that Jason Taylor is iffy on D, Landry missed the entire preseason and Rocky McIntosh, Erasmus James and Carlos Rogers are coming off major knee surgery, I can see why they would keep an extra number on D. Just to me, it's awful simple to put Rob Jackson on the practice squad and get your extra WR right there.

The D Line: Especially with Taylor likely missing at least one game, this unit will be under the microscope. James hasn't played a real game in a long time, much less a full game, and I expect he'll have to be worked in slowly. I figure Demetric Evans, who I think had a helluva camp and should be in line for more PT regardless, is going to be a central figure against the Giants. The only other reserve ends are young speed rushers - Chris Wilson and Jackson - and, again, these are guys who can play teams and give you a few bursts on third downs. One of them will likely be inactive Thursday.

Positional Roster:
OFFENSE
QB (3): Campbell, Collins, Brennan
RB (3): Portis, Betts, Cartwright
FB (1): Sellers
TE: (3): Cooley, Yoder, Davis
WR (5): Moss, Randle El, Thrash, Thomas, Kelly
OL (9): Samuels, Kendall, Rabach, Thomas, Heyer, Jansen, Fabini, Geisinger, Rinehart
DEFENSE
DL (10): Taylor, Golston, Griffin, Carter, Evans, Montgomery, James, Alexander, Wilson, Jackson
LB (6): Washington, Fletcher, McIntosh, Campbell, Blades, Fincher
CB (5): Springs, Rogers, Smoot, Torrence, Tryon
S (5): Landry, Doughty, Hamilton, Moore, Horton

The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

As has been posted up here, Davis will be/is the six reciever (pass catcher). Don't be surprised to see Davis or Cooley lining up in the slot position with all three TEs on the field.

Rinehart looked better at LG than he did at LT,but it's good flexibility to know he can get out at OT and still play.

Note to self "add third question to Vice Presidential candidate questionnaire"

1. Are you interested in being part of the Republican party after the last 8 years?

2. Have you ever been convicted of a crime or could someone spot you near the scene of a crime?

3. New question: Do you have any underage children who are pregnant out of wedlock?

The first string did a pretty good job. And they did not play against Jags. If I were going to have concerns on the D side it would be the coverage unit.

From the other thread:

Thanks for standing by me, Alex.
I do sincerely apologize and take full responsibility for the poor beep beep performance over the last few days. I was off Saturday, which really was no excuse, and yesterday was hairier than Bigfoot. I will strive to do better. Also, my 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.
Kidding! (But if I had one, she probably would be.)

I am more worred about the Cover guys, I think as long as we got all 3 OLB's in there it should be ok.

From PK's MMQB:

Quote of the Week II

"Our governor is going to be vice president, and we still don't have an Olive Garden.''
--Alaskan Kerry Baranou, bemoaning the local dining choices while celebrating the prospect of Sarah Palin going to the White House, in Sunday's New York Times

Posted by: Anonymous | September 1, 2008 1:01 PM | Report abuse

As we saw today with a new WR being added to the practice squad, the roster situation is still fluid.

While it surprised me at first that we went with so many DEs, I think that situation will shake itself out soon. Rob Jackson simply flashed too much potential to go on the practice squad to start. After we see what they all can do when live bullets are fired, I expect those numbers to change.

I'm encouraged by the youth movement. Seems we can't jump on Vinny for going young when for the last umpteen years we've been griping that the geriatric incumbents (I'm talking football here) have won out over yutes.

We're a little green now, sure, but I'm talent seemed to out in most cases this season, including replacing Jansen as the starter, except for maybe not bringing in say, Delthea O'Neal to shore up CB over, ahem, Tryin'.

Even then, maybe Tryon will mature into his role. I mean... we aren't at all the pracitices and don't see the film. I'm willing to wait and see if maybe he can be coached up.

At least we're cutting ties with guys like Wade, Frosty and Boschetti and finally moving on.

My guess in 3 years if Zorn is still here it will be a different roster at a lot of spots, like it was when Gibbs came back. We will find our guys to fit this system.

5 guys survived through Gibbs,Chris, Randy, Rock, Betts and JJ, now JJ going to the home. Smoot don't count he left and came back.

Posted by: Alex35332 | September 1, 2008 1:10 PM | Report abuse

Jason, Cindy,
Did Smoot pass the fitness test? What about Jason Taylor?
Also, are they thinking Portis as the 6th wide receiver? They have depth at RB.

they're thinking me for the 6th wr. sjk

BD,
Someone posted above: Probably Cooley and Davis as 6th WR.

Hey, that wasn't me at 1:04. Nice one on the bump, Alex.

Posted by: Cindy | September 1, 2008 1:16 PM | Report abuse

Well said, Alex. I'd love to get an In-N-Out or a Chick-Fil-A here in Seattle. I'd gladly trade you our Arby's for either one.

BTW, had the most amazing thing ever last night. Ricotta/Chevre stuffed Ravioli. Dear God, truly amazing. Had an amazing Sang/Cab blend to go with it.

The Bristol Palin news is unfortunate, and I hope folks keep her out of the election. She's 17! All kids do dumb things (some dumber than others). After all, Ashley Biden has been arrested outside of a nightclub (and she's hot as balls, too). I know the real Democratic politicians and spokespeople will say nothing about this at all, but the nutcases on the blogs may go overboard. There is enough stupidity in the Sarah Palin selection to last every day for the next 60 days without drifting into Bristol Palin's life.

And, in other news, I finally finished "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao". I'm torn about this one. There's no question Junot Diaz deserved the Pulitzer, but the story seemed like an almost Rashamon-like view of John Kennedy Toole's "Confederacy of Dunces". What should I read next?

It's clear to me that Tryon and Devin Thomas are the worst of the '08 draft class. The jury is still out on Malcolm Kelly, as he has not seen the field yet.

The other draftees seem to be really solid, especially our young safeties. In fact, I think Justin Hamilton or Kareem Moore will eventually supplant Reed Doughty in the starting lineup.

Pretty disappointing (but accurate) grades for WRs, considering what we have spent on them in the last few seasons, in the way of $ and picks.

Also, what do the democraps have against having babies, or are they angry that she isn't having an abortion.

How much more trash than that can you get. Born in Idaho, pregnant 17 year old daughter, husband is a fisherman, member of the NRA and loves moose hunting and moose burgers... Yep, she should be the first woman president.... of Mississippi or Alabama or Louisiana maybe...

funny how you liberals suddenly think a 17 year old shouldn't have a choice to get pregnant out of wedlock, but she should, by all means, have the right to abort her unborn child without notifying her parents.

How many corners are active for a game? How Tryon made the roster I don't know. Hard to believe there isn't a final roster cut somewhere who is a lot better. At least Jimoh could play teams. I wish someone would explain to the scouts and FO that it is awfully hard for a 5 foot corner to cover a 6'5" receiver.
