Changes coming to running back depth chart?

For all the accolades Donovan McNabb deservingly received for Sunday's performance, the Redskins' ground game left a lot to be desired. A whole lot, in fact.

One thing to keep an eye on in the days leading up to Sunday's game at St. Louis is the backfield depth chart.

After Larry Johnson tried sprinting around left end at the start of the fourth quarter - a 10-yard loss that effectively killed that possession and the team's ability to milk time off the clock - he was removed from the game. Keiland Williams played the next two downs and Clinton Portis handled the carries on the next possession. Williams was back for the Redskins' final drive of regulation and again made an appearance in overtime.

Johnson said Monday that he's still getting used to his reserve role.

"This is all new to me," said Johnson, who finished Sunday's game with minus-7 yards on a pair of carries, "coming from going out there and playing at least the first half, doing something to not doing anything in the first half to doing a little bit in the second half. It's tough."

As a group, the Redskins totaled 18 yards on 17 carries. Coaches are high on Williams and really liked his preseason work. We won't know until later in the week if the undrafted rookie starts cutting into Johnson's playing time.

In practice, Johnson said, Portis handles the most of the workload and Williams handles many third-down reps.

Running backs always talk about finding their rhythm, which is difficult to do when you spend most of the game on the sidelines. Johnson said when he was finally called off the bench, he was too eager to make a big play. The result was the 10-yard loss.

"I take that 10-yard loss on me," he said.

"That was really disappointing for the team to go in there and to go backward 10 yards at a very critical time in the fourth quarter. It's tough, but you just got to learn a little bit more, as far as when it's your turn, you get one chance or two chances to put your pride aside and do what's best for the team," he continued. "I just got caught up with trying to make a play at a crucial point in the game."

If you think we lost because of McNabb, and we're NOT better than we were last year, you should really quit watching football cause you have no idea what you're looking at.

I just heard Doc Walker make a good point...man, can you just imagine if Sean21 was still alive. Laron playing like he is playing, with Sean being that Angel in the outfield. Man...Andre Johnson would have never caught that ball. He would have got rocked, or Sean would have picked it off.......I can never say this enough. I miss Sean Taylor.

Tough game to swallow, but that home loss was better than any loss Razorweed-Head Zorn ever had here..We should have scalped him and made a scrubbing brush..Is McNabb not a serious upgrade??

Cool. I'll be in the minority on this issue. Seems the prevailing thought is that it's okay to go out and publicly bash a teammate (whether it meant it at Haslett or Doughty it doesn't matter. You keep all issues in house), even though while not all world or even starter material, goes out and gives it everything he's got.

Check. Just was making sure.

I've been one of Hall's biggest backers here. But ripping your TEAMMATES publicly to the media isn't cool, I don't care how right they are. It just seems that you'd respect teammate a little more than what Hall is showing... someone that you go to war with every Sunday.

Honestly, I wouldn't expect most of you to understand. We come from totally different backgrounds.

The first headline I read at bleacherreport.com

"Dalls Cowboys 2-0? They are if you look at it this way"

I mean seriously? Are Dallas fans in that much denial? All I keep hearing is Dallas beat themselves two weeks in a row. Dallas handed you that win, Dallas lost to themselves, blah blah blah.

HOLY CRAP. I love it when someone can't call the kettle black.

On another note, HTTR! One loss, everyone is already flipping out on RI forums. LULZ gotta love Redskins fans. I say awesome attempt at a win! Next week let's go!

Why anyone attempts to engage pabrain in any sort of dialogue is beyond me.

Dude is a billy goat and is more of an annoyance than all of the trolls combined.

Everyone is singling out the jump ball but there were 10 other plays that would have changed our fate.

It was a 2 deep zone on 4th and 10 and 31 was supposed to carry AJ for the first 15 YDs and then turn him over to 37. That was the call by haslett, problem is 37 is a marginal player and AJ is an elite player.

As far as Hall, wasn't he also on the field when Schaub threw for half a thousand?

Coach Singletary needs to get some advice from some of those Haight/Ashbury hippies on the feng-shui of wearing a big cross around your neck to games..The cross is cool for instilling peace (INACTION) but can be a negative for the Head Coach..It might even be better if he wore a Satanic Pentacle around his neck, especially for his defense, where the wild things usually end up, but this might be just a little over the top for the sincerely Christian Mike...(hrmhprmh, cough, cough)..Just say I'm a skeptic of people who wear Gawd on their sleeve, heh-heh..Go Big Mike!!

Shanahan has learned a lot from this loss as well. One of which is that Johnson is done! Portis is only good for blocking. I'm sure Shanny & Son are looking at RBs on the undrafted class and FA. And DHall should shut the F up and just man up, they didn't play well on defense period. A good defense doesn't yield 300+ yards and only produce 1 TO. (ex: Steelers defense had 7 freakin TOs, and yeah CJ28 and Vince Young look retarded and normal)

Johnson needs to go. He sounds like Allen Iverson in his twilight years. A star player who doesn't know how to accept a lesser role. He keeps talking about his limited opportunities, but the truth of the matter is his skills have diminished a great deal and even if he was the starter he would not be able to produce like he did in KC. Therefore, we are wasting our time with this guy. We should have drafted RBs in the last two drafts. We'll suffer for a couple years in the now, for front office decisions that have been made previously. Hopefully Allen and Shanny will improve with their decisions and build this roster into a champion! Hopefully Shanny's love of the run game brings in some good young backs and a couple of O-lineman! We can start there with CENTER!!! Jeazzzz

OK they lost, but last year this loss would have been 30 or more to 3. sorry folks, but I'll take this loss and enjoy the entertainment provided. I still see weaknesses and lack of talent in spots, but they are better. did not know the kicker had the leg for 52 either. O-line can protect better and McNabb is savvy, but they are no where near overpowering. I've known doughty isn't a starting level player for a few years now. you feel for him with the story of his kid and all, but he isn't the answer. Neither is Hortonf really. They need help at safety until Moore comes back.

Okay so what have we learned:
1. Donovan McNabb is a huge upgrade over JCam
2. LeRon Landry is a beast and we desperately need Kareem back and we have no depth at free safety
3. Cut Larry Johnson and activate Ryan Torrain we need some younger, faster legs
4. We need some road grader Offensive linemen, ours ain't gettin it done

The Raiders just beat the Rams with their backup quarterback coming in the game for mop up duty. Of course the coach used the the old spark story after the win. The coming week Washington will be able to close it out. The Dallas win was because the Cowboys did not finish, the Houston lost was because the Texans did finish now it is time for the Redskins to show their true selves. Game one it was all defense and game two it was mostly all offense, The Redskins have yet to have a complete game. Against the Rams the victory will be at hand and easy at that.

The defense is going to be bad this year. Not the players fault, not the coaches fault. Got a lot of square pegs trying to fit in round holes. Haslett will try to scheme to cover the deficiencies but the better offenses will abuse the Skins this year. I'm willing to be patient and let the Skins fill out that defense with talent better suited for a 3-4 defense.

New soup = McNabb (He did Campbell's Chunky Soup commercials)

Old soup = Campbell (as in Campbell's soup)

As much as I liked JC, he's not a starting caliber QB and never will be. McNabb's gonna make mistakes, but I'll take his mistakes (which will become fewer over time as he becomes more familiar and comfortable), his mobility, and his shoot it down the field arm upgrade over what we had.

There will always be those nay-sayers, no matter what, who will have nothing positive to say, about ANYTHING, or ANYONE.

larry johnson last week ran out of bounds when he should have taken the handoff--put his head down and burrow for what he could get as the hole wasn't there---almost cost 'skins the game. This week same deal--put your head down, stay in bounds and get what you can and don't hurt your team--this time it did help give texans more touches

bye bye larry.......give us yout...give us yout...and can we get someone who cna play free safety?!? plleeeaaassssee?!?!?
