Michael Green May Be Added at Safety

With the Redskins short on safeties with Reed Doughty on the injured reserve list and Justin Hamilton released from what was a shallow group to start with, Michael Green is a name that has come up inside the building, and it is likely he could be signed today, according to sources.

Right now the Skins have LaRon Landry and rookie starter Chris Horton is nursing an ankle injury. Rookie Kareem Moore missed almost all of the offseason work and training camp because of knee problems, and is pretty far behind. He also heard about it from defensive coordinator Greg Blache after failing to blitz on that 43-yard pass late in the loss to the Rams. And that's it. Corner Shawn Springs can, and very well may, play more free safety in coming weeks, but that's still not much depth.

Green, 31, played under Blache in Chicago. He was with the Bears from 2000-2005, and spent the past two season with Seattle, where Jim Zorn was QB coach. I wouldn't be surprised if the Skins added another safety at some point. Vernon Fox, who was with them the past few years, got picked up by Denver. Omar Stoutmire knows the system well and could still be available down the road if need be. He has slowed in recent years, but was brought back in a pinch in years back.

With Green, Shaun Alexander and a punter (either Josh Miller or Ryan Plackemeier) all very likely to be signed, the Skins would clear roster space by parting with Hamilton and punter Durant Brooks (whether to IR or a release or an injury settlement) and also placing Doughty on IR.

All of this will likely be announced around 4 pm.

Man, I thought talking junk over the internet would be a total waste of time, but the responses I got from these guys made it worth the effort. I'll amend my statement from a previous threat with their input added...
RedDMV seems like the kind of guy who..
a) thought wrestling is real
b)thinks he is a male pornstar
c)doesn't have a girlfriend
d)tints the windows on his maxima to 5 time the legal limit (and has a sweeet exhaust system, dude)
The Truth seems like the kind of guy who..
a)takes beer pong really seriously
b)wears jeans that cost more than his electric bill
c)has a favorite cologne
d)goes to bars that have lines to get in
e)doesn't understand that the above are comments are supposed to be denigrating
And with that I will officially retire from internet smack talking. I'll leave with you with a quote from our guy Sean Taylor (RIP)...
"We get paid a king's ransom to play a kid's game.."
Don't your shorts in a twist over this stuff guys. The skins are about to pay Sean Alexander about 5 times what the average DC public school teacher makes. If anything football related is gonna ruffle your feathers that should be it.

moore's blitz may or may not have worked, but the point is it doesn't matter. Excessively risky play call by blanche, who's pissed he gaffed and maturely points a finger at a the rook. SA v MM is an interesting debate. I would have gone with MM because of his future potential to the organization, but i understand the value in alexander and wouldn't mind seeing him in maroon.

Hey I like Horton. I think he's going to be a cold beast in the league.

If there is one thing I wish they'd done sooner in the draft, it was: draft a LB (Is Fincher still on the team), address the DL a little earlier in the draft, pick either Kelly or Davis. I would've went with neither so early in the draft.

Think: Swap Davis(2rd) and Jackson(7rd); Use the Kareem Moore pick on a LB or other OL. Of course all these guys can turn out to be players in this league and all hypothetics go to waste.

Posted by: RedDMV | October 14, 2008 3:56 PM | Report abuse

Flound thanks.

Interesting, Moss, for a pick and Gonzo. Seems kind of high to me, but sounds JUST RIGHT for them...

Seems a little premature to be bailing on a second round pick....

Posted by: BeantownGreg | October 14, 2008 3:57 PM | Report abuse

BeantownGreg, Sinorice Moss was picked in the 2nd round in 2006, but was already 4th on the depth chart behind Burress, Toomer, and Steve Smith. Never has done much as either a receiver or kick returner. Can't see why the Chiefs would want a marginal WR for a HOF TE who has trade value.

Signing Mike Green to replace Doughty sounds like a smart move, similar to signing Troy Vincent midseason two years ago, IF he is healthy. He knows Blatche's system, is a smart player, and has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Hope the injuries haven't slowed him down too much so he can help in our Cobra package. I shudder about having two rookies at DB in passing situations.

Is this a serious comment? "The rookie" gaffed, not Blache. You wouldn't blame Jim Zorn for Devin Thomas blowing a route and causing a botched play, you can't blame Blache for one of his players missing an easy assignment.

The OFFICIAL SONG OF REDSKIN INSIDER

Beep Beep by The Playmates

(very slowly)
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep
While riding in my Cadillac
What to my surprise
A little Nash Rambler was following me
About one third my size
The guy musta wanted to pass me up
As he kept on tooting his horn
I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

(slowly)
I pushed my foot down to the floor
To give the guy the shake
But the little Nash Rambler stayed right behind
He still had on his brake
He musta thought his car had more guts
As he kept on tooting his horn (beep beep)
I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

(normal speed)
My car went into passing gear
And we took off with gust (whoosh)
Soon we were going ninety
Musta left him in the dust
When I peeked in the mirror of my car
I couldn't believe my eyes
The little Nash Rambler was right behind
You'd think that guy could fly
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

(quickly)
Now we were doing a hundred and ten
This certainly was a race
For a Rambler to pass a Caddy
Would be a big disgrace
The guy musta wanted to pass me up
As he kept on tooting his horn (beep beep)
I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

(very quickly)
Now we're going a hundred twenty
As fast as I can go
The Rambler pulled along side of me
As if we were going slow
The fella rolled down his window
And yelled for me to hear
"Hey buddy how do I get this car outa second gear?"

The Alexander deal does kinda make sense I guess.

Mason couldn't handle blitz pickup, and SA knows the system, will know all the protections, and in theory could step right in and play this week.

It would be a week to week contract, so when Betts is healthy he can just be cut.

Not scared of Roy Williams at all. Blown 1st rounder for them. He was pissed at not receiving enough targets when there was a grand total of 1 other player competing with him for targets. Now he's playing with TO, Witten, Barber, and Jones. This is a blessing for the NFC East.

So Dallas have now effectively "cornered the market" in Roy Williams'?

Presumably this is Jerrah's plashy response to SA.... And with Brad Johnson behind center, you should expect Dallas to play lots of 4 or 5-wide sets to try to stop the pass rush...

ELI MANNING SUFFERS CHEST INJURY
Posted by Michael David Smith on October 14, 2008, 4:01 p.m.
Giants quarterback Eli Manning suffered a chest injury during the Giants’ Monday night loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Coach Tom Coughlin said he’s not sure whether the injury, which occurred when Browns defensive tackle Shaun Rogers plowed Manning to the ground, will force Manning to miss any practice or playing time.

“He got hit and when he was driven into the ground … his chest was bothering him after the game,” Coughlin said. “He was in some pain there. But I don’t have any information other than that today. He was in the training room and we’ll see. … I don’t know anything yet. They’re going to do all of the tests and those types of things.”

Rogers was not flagged on the play, but judging by the way the NFL has been dishing out fines recently, it’s likely that Rogers will have his paycheck docked

Ed Werder's piece on espn dot com is pretty funny. Says they are talking "multiple picks, but not a first rounder". He also goes on to say that the boys might be hesitant to bring Williams in because they are "concerned about how Owens would react to the addition of another prominent receiver and the possibility it would diminish his role rather than provide him occasional single coverage. The potential negative effect on the overall offensive chemistry is also a concern and some in the organization prefer to wait until the offseason to make such a move."
Can you imagine having to consider how your your prima -donna, team imploding WR will react before you make any roster moves? Wow.....

Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a reporter.

dealer,

It *is* a pretty big difference. It sounds like it's the 1, 3, and 6, though. Trey Wingo just said it too on ESPN.

Redcoat, yes, it was Mr. Brown I was thinking of ... it was him ... in the parlor ... with the candlestick. Not Mr. Green. My bad.

Onto the punter choice, here is what I believe is the primary selling point for Mr. Josh Miller (from the wikipedias):

"Miller attended Scottsdale Community College for two years and was a letterman in football with the Fighting Artichokes."

They fight their hearts out up there.

Actually, about the safety thing, Blache likes to play the "big nickel" quite a bit(I think he calls it Cobra package) and they need to dress four most games.

But if their short there, they won't. Blache will work it out.

I'm pretty sure that every game so far this season we've only dressed 3. Hamilton has been inactive every game, and either Moore or Doughty has been inactive too. Plus, Springs seems like he's the emergency safety when in-game adjustments are necessary. I think we'll be fine.

Wikipedia already says Plackenmeier was signed by the Skins.

Avocados > Artichokes

"Plackemeier attended Fallbrook Union High School in San Diego and was a letterman in soccer and football. In soccer, he was a four-year letterman and a two-time team M.V.P. In football, as a senior, he was a first team All-Avocado League selection and was named the North County Times Kicker of the Year."

well, they can put them all in one basket down there (are up there, as the case may be with me) but that does not make that cast of malcontents, cast offs, n'eer do wells and rapscallions a team to be reckoned with

+++LIONS TRADE ROY WILLIAMS TO COWBOYS_+++

See... THIS is what a REAL GM does.

And by that, I mean the Cowboys, who just bought themselves a championship. Remember, before making his three non-playing picks at receiver, Vinny tried to trade TWO NUMBER ONE PICKS for Chad Johnson.

The brilliant thing is, Dallas did it as Pacman was suspended-so Goodell won't DARE investigate the swindle Dallas perpetrated on th GM-free Detroits.
