Sellers Misses Practice; Kelly Doesn't Practice Fully

From Jason La Canfora

Jim Zorn said that Mike Sellers missed practice with a quadriceps injury but hopes he can return later in the week

Malcolm Kelly was unable to practice fully, which "didn't help him at all" in his ability to play Sunday after being inactive last week with an ankle injury. He is still favoring the ankle, Zorn said.

Stephon Heyer (shoulder) also missed practice, and if he doesn't practice tomorrow he could miss the game.

Clinton Portis was slowed by neck soreness but will play as usual Sunday, Zorn said.

Bubba Tyer is going to talk to reporters shortly on Jason Taylor's injury.

In the last post, I rather persuasively wrote:

OK Skins Nation, try this on for size (though I fear you may not like the fit):

Aint no combination of Redskins greats who could hang with this team:

QB: Staubach
RB: Dorsett
FB: Moose Johnston
WR: TO, Irvin, Drew Pearson, Bob Hayes
TEs: Whitten, Novacek
Ts: Eric Williams, Rayfield Wright
Gs: Larry Allen, Leonard Davis
C: Andre Gurourde

DEs: Harvey Martin and Ed "Too Tall" Jones
DTs: Bob Lilly and Randy White
LBs: Lee Roy Jordan, Ware, Chuck Howley
CBs: Deion Sanders, Mel Renfro
Ss: Cliff Harris and Darren Woodson
Kr: Bob Hayes

Coach: Tom Landry
score against Skins all-time team: 45-16 Boys Win Big, Real real real big. I'm Darrell Dallas and I wholeheartedly approve this message.

Alex, Bullet Bob Hayes would run past D. Green like a bureaucrat vacating HUD at 5:01pm.

Nate, yes sir, the up and down move is a must. It was just a little razzle-dazzle to irritate the opposition and set the Cowboys apart...just a touch of the razzmatazz that made the 70s Boys so unique and appealing - even to the RFK faithful, secretly.:) Just a little Felix Unger for you Oscar Madisons up north. Dorsett gets the nod over Emmitt because he ran with elegance, like the wind blowing Grace Kelly's scarf in her convertable - style my friend, style.

Lets see Darell D, I'll take the Hogs over your line every day and twice on Sundays. Riggins or Larry Brown? Riggins lasted longer, but Brown was the best until that carpet in Philly tore his knee up. He was Emmitt before Emmitt

Sonny or Sammy Baugh vs Staubach? Fair fight there.

Art Monk and Charley Taylor as WRs, with Bobby Mitchell or Gary Clark. No contest. Not even a whiff of close there. Lots of good tight ends in the mix. Jerry Smith might be the best of the Skins over the years, but both teams have had good ones.

D-line, I'll give you an edge. Dave Butz and Dexter Manley were both beasts.

LBs. Hanburgur has more Pro Bowl appearances than any guy not in the Hall. London Fletcher is a beast, but Sam Huff was even beastier. Ken Harvey or Wilbur Marshall?

Secondary gets interesting. 20 years of Darrell Green trumps a few years of Deion. Two best cover guys I've ever seen and I have no idea who is thrid. Safety. Ken Houston. I'm sure Walt Garrison remembers him. Paul Krause was the all-time leader in picks (might still be). And Sean Taylor. Yeah. I'm not fearing your secondary as much as your fearing mine.

And returning kicks. Darrell Green.

Coach: Lombardi or Gibbs? Hmmm...

Back at ya

Someone give me a good argument as to how this is justifiable:

Jason has constantly complained about the Redskins Front Office and their lack of accountability and visibility. He has called for either Vinny or Dan to "face the music" and answer questions regarding their decisions.

In training camp, Jason bashes Vinny for "lying" to all of the media when Vinny denied a deal had been completed to acquire Jason Taylor from Miami. He demanded Vinny be more honest and open regarding this issue, even when doing so could have ACTUALLY been tampering since nothing had been finalized at that point and Taylor was still technically a member of the Dolphins. Not to mention the deal could have fallen apart, and any GM in the league will tell you it is a no-no to discuss trades with the media that have not been finalized because they can always fall through. We all know what would have happened had Vinny announced the deal before it was done, then it had fallen through because of that, or he had been charged with tampering because he discussed acquiring Taylor while he was still technically a Dolphin. Jason would have ripped him up and down for compromising the team just for the sake of announcing a trade a few hours early, and this criticism would have been justified.

After the news of Vinny's new radio show comes out, Jason rips the team again, saying that a GM should have better things to do then spending 4 hours a week making himself more accessible to the fans and media. Even if Jason actually knew the duties of a typical GM, isn't this increased accountability and accessibility what he had been calling for for quite some time now? Jason rips the show, rips Vinny, and rips Snyder anyway. he goes on at great length of how a show of this nature is "unprecedented" even though some basic research shows there are at least 5 other GMs in the league with similar shows, including the Colts GM, Bill Polian. He quotes another anonymous source that rips the idea of the show, apparently a source as misinformed as Jason, since the source also speaks incorrectly as to the unprecedented nature of the show. This is most likely the same source he calls every time he wants a negative quote about the Redskins, if there is actually a source at all.

Immediately upon the debut of the show, Jason calls the league in an attempt to get the league to look at what Vinny said and determine if that was tampering. Aside fromt he fact it is not his job to CREATE the story, he should have known, and I'm sure he did know, that this was not tampering based on the fact that the tampering rule is quite clear and easily found with a simple Google search. It is obvious that he was hoping to create enough trouble for Vinny and the team so as to cast a bad light on the show, and fulfill his own opinion of the show as a bad idea. If it were really the innocuous type of call Jason and the Post claims it was, the NFL surely would not have made it a point to call the team and let them know one of their local beat reporters had called up and tried to claim there was tampering. Sure, Jason defenders can throw out the "only other teams can charge the Redskins with tampering" argument, but anything more than a prima facie look at this reveals that while a reporter can't file an official charge, simply an accusation is a "charge" in theliteral meaning of the word. Vinny never said Jason officially charged the team with tampering, and to be honest, we all know he wouldn't need to to create a problem for the Skins had tampering actually occurred.

I would appreciate any intelligent responses that refrain from childish name calling and the mother/wife invocations.

While I disagree over which man is/was faster, Mr. Dallas, I do admit I enjoyed your little zinger directed at the typical GS worker in DC. I would add, though, that if the particular work day was Friday, the said bureaucrat would either have 1) "flexed" or 2) "not taken lunch" and either way would be long gone by 5:01 pm.

He is as fragile as a ming vase and no where near as valuable, get a body that can contribute in some way shape or form because this kid is a wasted draft pick.I swear i think he is a hypocondriac seriously, never healthy all he is doing is padding his bank account. The NFL is all about performance and he "ain't performin"(excuse my english) Vinny? who did the due diligence on this kid before you pulled the trigger? This is a HORRIBLE draft pick.

By the way - Sammy Baugh, John Riggins, Art Monk, Charley Taylor, Bobby Mitchell, Gary Clark, Chris Cooley, Jim Lachey, Joe Jacoby, Russ Grimm, Len Hauss, Jeff Bostic, Dexter Manley, Charles Mann, Dave Butz, Sam Huff, Chris Hanburger, Ken Harvey, Darrell Green, Brig Owens, Champ Bailey, Ken Houston, Sean Taylor, and Brian Mitchell would annihilate the Cowboys. Wouldn't even be close.

Gary Clark, you already got two relatively reasonable responses to your post.

I think there is general agreement here with the main points of your screed, that JLC regularly grinds an axe in the general direction of Vinny and that his call to the league office was probably made with some sort of bad intent, also in the general direction of Vinny.

What more do ya want from us?

We in Dallas know a thing or two about horrible draft picks. In fact we'd be happy to trade you Kelly (Malcom, not Grace) for Bobby "Thanks a lot Tuna" Carpenter. The Tuna bought some decent groceries for us, but when he went for one of "his guys" he did us no favors (Fabini, Bledslow, etc.). Rob Carptenter might have been a good Giant rb, but the apple has yet to fall from that tree. So we'll be happy to make that trade.

We need more plays with Mike Sellers catching the ball with a head of steam. If he has to turn to catch the ball or stop in his pattern, he's easier to bring down. However, once he gets his massive frame in motion, DBs bounce off him.

Well, on the Vinny Show. I think my final point. That at some point he may slip up and get in real trouble, is the big reason I am against it personally. There is nothing he has said about any past traids that were secrets.

What I was saying about the taylor traid speaks to the same problem. If there are all these rulse about what a GM can and cannot say, then they should probably not say anything, it would be much safer for Vinny if he just did a press blackout on himself. Have a PR man handel that stuff like the POTUS does. You never want to lie to a reporter and know they will find out, it makes you look bad.

And unless you heard the NFL spokesman then you can not say he had a different tone. Neither you or I know what inflections the NFL PR guy was using in that statement weather he was putting the foucs on the fact that jason called or that he was told there was no violation how he was refering to La Canfora's question. His tone could have implied everything about the Kifin question came after the fact that they said nothing could happen. Furthermore he does not ever make a coment that Jason's tone was an effort to get Vinny in trouble.

I would like to concurr that this has been a much more respectful dialague about the topic than there have been in the past two days. Also I apologies for typos.

Thanks for the post. You made a couple of points I agree with, as the point of my original post was not to say Vinny has done everything right, but just that JLC is inconsistent in his reasons for criticism. As for your point on the press blackout, this is exactly on my point about JLC criticizing the FO for not being accessible. JLC criticizes when Vinny is not accessible, then criticizes when he is too accessible, or even yet, when he is accessible but only to the point where he does not compromise the competitiveness of the team.

As for the NFL rep quote, I again see what you're saying, though I think the fact that the NFL made a point to even call the team to let them know speaks volumes. I would say whoever took the call from JLC thought it was far enough away from the routine JLC claims it was to make a point tocall the team and let them know. If this was a routine weekly call, as he claims in an e-mail, then wouldn't the NFL be calling the Redskins every week to let them know?

We have no idea how often a team gets charged with tampering and its found to not have merit, I would love to know that because lets say it turns out there is a charge every week and of the 50 + charges a year 1 or 2 are proven true, if thats the case than whats that say about the whole debate.

"Nate- I'm looking for these JLC supporters to dispute anything factual, that's all. Still nothing convincing."

A majority of your post is not factual, and therefore there is little to respond to. But I'll try anyway.

"even when doing so could have ACTUALLY been tampering since nothing had been finalized at that point and Taylor was still technically a member of the Dolphins."

Wrong. Speaking with Taylor without the permission of the Dolphins would have been tampering. Speaking with Parcells about Taylor is 100% legitimate.

"Not to mention the deal could have fallen apart, and any GM in the league will tell you it is a no-no to discuss trades with the media that have not been finalized because they can always fall through."

Wrong. Vinny DID discuss it with the media. He said there was no talk of a trade. That's discussing it with media, with Vinny flat out lying. Not discussing would have been "no comment", or something of the sort.

"or he had been charged with tampering because he discussed acquiring Taylor while he was still technically a Dolphin."

Wrong again. Discussing a trade with a GM from another team is not tampering in the slightest sense.

"even though some basic research shows there are at least 5 other GMs in the league with similar shows, including the Colts GM, Bill Polian."

Please provide this 'basic research' that shows 5 other GMs that host radio shows during business hours, during the week, during the season.

"This is most likely the same source he calls every time he wants a negative quote about the Redskins, if there is actually a source at all."

Yes, nice factual evidence provided here.

"Aside fromt he fact it is not his job to CREATE the story, he should have known, and I'm sure he did know, that this was not tampering based on the fact that the tampering rule is quite clear and easily found with a simple Google search."

JLC created no story. Nothing JLC did was written anywhere, or reported anywhere. If JLC wanted to "create" a story, he would have falsely reported a tampering charge. The person that CREATED the story was Vinny Cerrato. Nobody else.

"It is obvious that he was hoping to create enough trouble for Vinny and the team so as to cast a bad light on the show, and fulfill his own opinion of the show as a bad idea."

No, it is NOT obvious that he did anything OTHER than attempt to investigate an issue which he thought might be relevant to the Redskins. Everything else you write here is a conjecture based on your hatred of JLC.

"anything more than a prima facie look at this reveals that while a reporter can't file an official charge, simply an accusation is a "charge" in theliteral meaning of the word."

This may be the worst part of your argument. JLC did not accuse anyone of doing anything. If you can find iota of evidence that suggests this, then your argument may hold water. There is no post written by JLC, article written by JLC, video clip of JLC, or any of the above referencing JLC accusing the Redskins of anything. Until you can provide evidence otherwise, your entire argument is based on false premises.

It just seems they're as obsessed with screwing JLC as he is pointing out their shortcomings to them. The team has a right to defend itself, but it all seems so petty on both sides now. I grew up 25 years in DC and live in tampa, so this is a big way of getting my Skins info every day. I always post and beg for more analysis and less personal sniping.

Ode to Texas Stadium

Oh give me a home, where the Cowboys roam
Where the Eagles and Redskins get flayed
Where seldom is heard a Washington nerd
Who thinks that his team is okay

Home, home on the range
where Romo and T.O. are great
Where Washington mourns as the ref blows his horn
And the Cowboys have carried the day

Hello, friends. Does the collapse of the family got you down? Blurring of right and wrong making you despondent? Is lack of knowledge of the Truth causing you apoplexy? Well, good Americans, I have a solution for you -- Dick Cheney's Dutch Oven Cookies. These scrumptious munchies can't reverse what we good Americans know is the inevitable downward path this country is so blithely taking. But it’ll make things a lot easier to stomach as we, the people who know the Truth, go down swinging. Delicious served with hot tea straight from my very own urethra, these poop cookies will give you the intolerance and ignorance you need to rail against the wrong people for the wrong reasons and proclaim your righteousness with no inkling of what a hypocrite you really are. And if you aren’t in the DC or Jackson Hole area to get them fresh from me, I’ll ship the dough logs right to your door. They’ll be in the plain brown box, the one that smells distinctly like sh*t. Kisses,

Dick Cheney

I already explained the difference between saying nothing was happening and "No Comment". A "no comment" to a very specific question is very telling, and Vinny has said he did not want to give the appearance that anything was close to done so as not to potentially create a bidding war. I'll take that reason every day of the week. Anyway, what real fan cares that Vinny lied to reporters in the best interest of the team? The end result? We all got confirmation 3 hours later instead of JLC getting his "scoop". If you care about that, then you are either Jason or a member of his family, the rest of us care about the success of the team. I would have done the same thing.

I posted on this subject before. Something like 3 out of the last 30 WRs picked in the 2nd round have made the Pro Bowl (not counting the 2007 or 2008 draft). Much less than half have a career worth mentioning (avg of 500 yards per year).

Finding a Colston or an Eddie Royal (Robert was here a few years back) does happen. But historically, its the exception.

I'm not on board with Thomas from what I've seen, but the two interference calls isn't what gets me. Refs will throw a flag against a rookie that they wouldn't throw against a vet.

When Thomas didn;t run a pattern and Campbell almost got picked, that stayed with me. In this offense, you need to get where you need to be. Otherwise there is a good chance for a turnover.

As for the TD that was called back. It was a blown coverage, but at least he did catch the ball and knew which way to run

On Monday, Skins didn't make Peter King's (si.com) top 15 (with the rest of the NFC East in 1-2-3).

On Tuesday, Prisco (cbs sportline) had the rest of the NFC East as 1-2-3, with Skins at #12.

Today, Florio (pft) has the same 1-2-3 for the NFC East, but Skins at #7.

I think we'll know on both Kelly and Thomas by sometime next season.

For me, you draft to your needs two years out. What the Skins missed doing is drafting linemen. Linemen make up over 40% of the starters (9/22) but the Skins have used less than 20% of their picks in that area ... and those picks have been heavily weighted towards the bottom of the draft.

Reaching for 3 pass catchers in the first two rounds means one, if not two, should be starters.

Wait, Jason was silent and never said anything to anyone publicly? I guess the call to the NFL wasn't as private as he thought, huh? If you are caught up in the semantics of only another team can officially charge the Redskins with tampering, then you are missing the point. You don't think that once JLC publishes a story saying he had confirmation from the NFL the Redskins were guilty of tampering that the Raiders don't go and file the official "charge" the next day? No, it's not. To express interest WITHOUT THE PERMISSION OF THE TEAM THAT HOLDS HIS/HER RIGHTS is tampering. To express interest after receiving the approval from that said team, is not. It has nothing to do with the press.

When we drafted them I was happy to, we got those two plus Fred Davis who while being a tigt end is much more of an offenise pass catcher then he is a blocker so I look at him as a WR. So we drafted 3 WR's ealry I will honestly be happy if one of them pans out the way that we have historically drafted. WR like these guys will alwyas be taken before lineman, the skill positions always go higher then do Lineman. Also it is harder to evaluate how a lineman will transition into the NFL, streanght and size can be deceptive in college to the pros, where as running a sub 4.4 equates anywhere. Im not goin to abandon these guys but if your saying that they cant produce till after theve gone through half of their paid contact is not right. Kelly is a big body and Thomas has natrual speed, neither of those can be taught but both can equate to the NFL immediately.

Posted by: Stu | September 24, 2008 4:50 PM | Report abuse

gary c, you make some good points, and it's certainly one way to look at it. i personally think that JLC is right on the money in questioning why vinnie has a 4 hour radio gig on the redskins station.

think about it, everything the skins have done is to manage the message. provide "unfiltered" information. they buy a fan website, buy radio stations, buy tv time to promote their product. all within their rights. however, it makes a beat reporters job that much more difficult to get the real story. particularly when the "GM" wont talk to said beat reporter because the owner has a real hatred for the local paper.

so JLC hears something on the radio that sounds fishy and calls the league office. i agree that the call was a little bit odd and sounds like a gotcha. but the key is it was only a call and nothing was published about it. the ONLY reason anyone knows about it is because vinny talked about it then larry talked about it. its the skins way of managing the message and trying to put pressure on the post to fire JLC and get someone to provide more favorable coverage.

say what you want about JLC's coverage, his writing style or whatever, but if you care about the team then you want somebody who will ask tough questions, not settle for the same old pr spin, and get you the info you want. otherwise you've got the redskins website, their fansite, or their radio station. is that what you want?

You should have just ended your post after your first sentence. You don't get what I'm arguing. I'm saying there would have been a story from JLC had he gotten the answer he wanted. However, since the NFL called the Skins and let them know about JLC's feeble attempt to embarass Vinny, the team responded publicly and thus this embarassed JLC. What was JLC going to write? Maybe something like, "Hey guys, I called the league and tried to get Vinny in trouble but they told me he did nothing wrong. Boy do I feel stupid!" Give it a rest.

k squared. On drafts, my criteria is simple. Is this an area of need in the next two years? WR fit that. O-line also did. As does d-line and LB.

Not going to disagree on the importance of drafting lines, there are so many spots to fill that it needs to be done on an ongoing basis. Just using simple math, if you have 7 picks, 3 ought to be linemen (43%). Because 9/22 starters are linemen (41%)

Again, you make no sense. He wouldn't have written anything, because there was no story to be written.

Basically, all you've said throughout this entire thing is that as a fan, you're angry that a writer investigated a gut feeling that could have possibly hurt the Redskins. You still have provided zero evidence that JLC was in the wrong in any way. Again, what did he do wrong?

Posted by: Anonymous | September 24, 2008 5:01 PM | Report abuse

Agreed Zeke....your 4:43 post is a much more thorough response than mine. I just feel like we are aging and not all that explosive on either side of the ball.

To me, it just seems like drafting from the inside out is the way to go.

Posted by: k Squared | September 24, 2008 5:02 PM | Report abuse

I would have no problem at all if JLC would write something critical right now about how picking Kelly in the second round, after already taking Thomas and Davis, was a bad idea. What the team could use right now is depth on either line. He should have taken a D linemen before round 7. That's a perfectly legitimate critique, and I applaud Jason for calling Vinny out on it in the past.

But I also think that for every critique like that, there are probably 2 instances where Jason invents something to critique Vinny for. That got old a long time ago. There's a difference between telling it like it is and always looking for the worst possibilities.

So, for me, it's not hard to believe that Jason called the NFL trying to find a way to justify his raging criticism of the radio show, even if that was damaging to the team. That's not the truth I want Jason to go out of his way and find, but that's just me;

No, actually, I don't even have a very broad clue over the whole "we hate Vinny and Dan" issue. I've lived in Houston since Snyder bought the team, so my life long fandom is only pretty much realized in watching and/or listening to the games. The rest of the stuff is sort of behind the scenes for me. I have no real opinion about Vinny or Danny.

As I said in my earlier post, this issue has just gone on too long - why is it such a big deal to you guys? Why is it important to hate the beat writer? No, no one complained about Jason Reid or Maske when they were the beat writers - you know why - because they are freaking boring.

All that said, this issue has run its course. We all know how some of you feel. Please stop bringing it up.

The NFL called the team because of the call from JLC, and the team responded. JLC therefore created the story.

Jasno's accountable to his masters at the Post and his family. He doesn't owe us an explanation. Although, I'm sure it will eventually come out in some sort of vaguely related explosion at Snyder/Cerrato.

I don't email him and I've never been to a shabingus, but the impression that Jason has created for me through his writing on this blog is that he is a prick weasel. And I also think that Vinny is an idiot, and he definitely came to mind last night when I was watching "The Neanderthal Code" on National Geographic. I hate them both. Luckily, I can think for myself and don't need to be guided by either.

Why should I be cool with that? These attacks on Vinny by the Post are making Snyder more determined than ever to retain Vinny, so why would I want Jason La Canfora to continue his vendetta? Now IF JLC had been right, then that meant Vinny would have tampered. In this case, there would have been a story, and it would have started with Vinny doing something wrong.

A reporter cannot create a story unless he deliberately lies about something. JLC has done nothing of the sort. End of story.

Most irritating Redskins, from a Big D perspective:

- the Fun Bunch They were tough to stop and the group celebration in the end zone literally gave me an instant migrane

- Theismann taunting the Boys as he ran it in for a safety

- George Allen - Mr. WetLips himself...always licking his lips, hunching over and clapping hysterically

- Diron Talbert - made Foghorn Leghorn sound modest

- Dexter Manley - clobbered Danny White on a regular basis (overpowering player)

- Ken Houston - for his iconic stuff-Garrison moment

- Joe Gibbs 1.0 Smug...thought he was better than the legend, TL

- Riggins - Mr. consistency...

- 12th Man - the RFK crowd...the most hostile, rabid fans in the history of the game

Of course there have been other Skins who have given Dallas fits, but guys like D. Green and Art Monk were actually classy so we Boys fans couldn't be as annoyed by them, compared with the assorted bozos and goobers listed above.

The top of the Week 4 ESPN.com NFL power rankings is an exclusive neighborhood. It helps to have an NFC East address.

The Dallas Cowboys lead the pack for the third consecutive week, but suddenly they're crowded by familiar foes. The New York Giants -- who, despite their reigning Super Bowl champion status, usually have occupied a mid-top-10 slot in our rankings -- are No. 2. And despite suffering a Sept. 15 loss to the Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles are elbowing their NFC East brethren for the spotlight at No. 3.

The only NFC East team not among the top 5 is the Washington Redskins, who register at No. 15 this week.

Posted by: Redface | September 24, 2008 7:14 PM | Report abuse

You are so wrong it's laughable. To express interest in another team's player or coach, even in a statement TO THE PRESS, is tampering. Period. If you disagree, you can look it up, or better yet, call the league office to "investigate".
Posted by: Gary Clark | September 24, 2008 4:43 PM

Yer suspect! All day I have seen your posts, ad nauseum! AND I come down on the side that JLa is wrong, and I dont like his anti-skins approach. HOWEVER, the statement above just ends it. Because when a reporter, such as JLa, asks the GM, "Are you in talks with Miami regarding JT" Vinny could certainly say yes if he wanted. THat is not tampering. Otherwise, how do trades come about. And in many cases in the NFL a team will recognize negotiations prior to an official announcement. There is NO tampering if both teams are working a deal. And certainly us talking to JT prior to finalization would be agreed upon, because you wanna know if he is 1 and done. For some reason Vinny didnt want to be up front in that situation. With the Vinny show and JLa and tampering, clearly JLC has an axe to grind and Vinny aint a fan of him, so a pissing match. Thats it let it gooooooooooooooooooooooo!!

As I was reaching to shut this foul and boring blog down, I noticed your snide cheap shot that just came in. Well, you're no John Maynard Keynes. Still, you are right that I tried for humility, and you're right to imply that I was noble in the attempt. Yet the biting sting of your trite farewell has not gone unnoticed.

I leave you with this, which I offer to the blog as an ultimatum. When I wake up tomorrow I will scan the remnants of this thread. If, based on my historic contribution and comportment, I have more supporters than detractors, then I will continue this blog journey for another day - on a trial basis until I see if the boring JLC-obsessed and the foul-mouthed are still stealing the limelight.

So, if bloggers want ole Bud to stick around: simply add a "Yes Bud" to one of your posts. If you want to send this Bud packing, then say "Bud Out". I'll abide by your majority verdict. If I'm voted in, I will consider it a mandate in support of my critique of the foul and boring JLC-obsessed. And I will expect to see related reform. Bud

Posted by: Lisa | September 24, 2008 6:29 PM

Lisa,

What mess are you talking about? There is no mess. The "story" you keep referring to are the activities of a reporter. Is that really newsworthy?

Reporters check on hunches that lead nowhere all the time. Just yesterday JLC had a hunch that Albert Fincher was cut from the team. Later he found out his hunch was wrong. Is that newsworthy? Maybe Vinny should have reported that as well.

And your whole "tampering rules are all over the internet -no phone calls are even necesssary" is also wrong. Tampering is a subjective rule. Green Bay claimed Minnesota was tampering with Favre, the NFL investigated, and Green Bay was wrong. If it was so cut and dry, why did Green Bay even file charges? I mean, surely they knew the "definitive" rules.

Again, all this is a non-story. The entire thing was perpetuated by Vinny. I'm sure you guys are that interested in the "newsworthy" acts of a reporter, but me, I don't really care.

For someone who does not really care, you have been the biggest JLC defender on here. You constantly down play JLC's role and blame Vinny for making this a story. Bottom line, if JLC doesn't make a phone call, nothing happens.

There is no reason to make the phone call as there was no tampering going on. If no tampering, why make the call. Anyone who heard the conversation of Friday knows that there was no tampering, so why the phone call?

The new Cowboys stadium is costing about 700 billion, but Jerry Jones don't need no bailout. Cowboy Pride never ceases to amaze me. Send Jerry to the White House and he'd have this economy buzzing in a fortnight. He'd do it the Cowboy Way.

Wake up America, write in Jerry Jones on November 5.

Let's see. If we say no, then we'll all be unemployed. If we say yes, we'll have jobs and we'll be able to get home mortgages, student loans, automobile loans. This seems like a no-brainer, unless you don't want to be employed or go to college or buy a car.

My take is that Jasno and Vinny bring out the worst in each other. They both take the low road, and each of them is a discredit to his institution. That the Post's and the Redskins' owners and managers tolerate -- and encourage -- their opprobrious behavior is a sign of the squalor of two once-great institutions.

Disappointing for sure to hear Kelly is not practicing. I was really hoping he could deliver a nice breakout performance against his childhood team in his home state. I guess there's a chance he plays but given his short and very undistinguished record to date, it doesn't look good. However, to paraphrase Mark Twain, I think reports of his demise have been hastily and greatly exaggerated. Give the kid a chance, he's 21 yrs old. I'm not here to serve as Malcolm Kelly apologist - he's clearly got some learning and growing up to do. But we didn't draft him to be a #1 receiver in year 1 or even 2. WR's are notorious for taking time to develop. The guys who make an immediate impact (Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson to name a few of the few) are few and far in between.

I'd love to see Devin Thomas take over the PR role, but at this point not sure he's ready. Learn the offense first, then maybe.

Nate, good to see you posting some eloquent prose and remaining magnanimous in the face of pettiness...always above the fray, well done. Hope all's well on the Left Coast.

Thanks for calling me a non-fan, when I've loved this franchise since 1991, and therefore stayed with this franchise during their hell years. I'm still a fan, but I'm also poor. As are most of my friends, therefore, we go to cheaper establishments than sports bars when we go out to eat. Also, God comes first, school + church second, 'skins third. Not exactly an unreasonable priority chart.

I believe what JLC did was either extremely stupid or childish. In the end, I believe people will see that it was both. He lost his credibility with his readers via an unnecessary phone call to the league. Quite simply, there was no reason for him to call. He knew there wasn't tampering, and therefore had no reason to call the league, and that's the way I see it.

Posted by: Redskins Fan | September 24, 2008 8:36 PM

I'll concede to your point "If JLC doesn't make the phone call, nothing happens". This is true.

This is also true: If Vinny doesn't bring it up on the air, nothing happens. THIS is Vinny's (non)story. Nobody else's.

In the end, nothing happened anyway, which is why it's a non-story (Redskins-wise). That's why I don't get why people are so hung up on it. You really care that much how a reporter goes about his business? Even when he did nothing wrong?

Your assumptions put you in a paradox that you pose with your own questions. You assume he knew it was not tampering. As you state, then why make the call? If he knew it was not tampering, that means he also knew there was no possible punishment that could occur. Yet, according to you (and many others), he did this to attempt to catch Vinny in the act. Really? He attempted to catch Vinny in the act that he knew did not occur? He attempted to catch Vinny in the act that he knew could not possibly be punished? He knowingly called the office in vain, even though he knew nothing positive for him could come out of it? Your argument doesn't hold water.

Occam's razor. He's a reporter. He called the NFL League Office questioning whether a segment of Vinny's show could constitute tampering. Why? Simplest answer: he did not know definitively. When he was told it could not constitute tampering, he let it go on his end. He didn't blog about it, he didn't write about it, he didn't report it, he didn't leak it to another source, nothing.

Vinny then brings the above paragraph up on his radio show. This is a story? This is newsworthy? Really? I'm sorry, but the above had zero impact on the Redskins. Even if it did, it would not be JLC's fault -- it would be Vinny's for breaking league rules for tampering. No matter how you spin it, JLC was simply doing his job.

psps23, if you are not a defense lawyer, then you have missed your calling. You are very good at making words paint the picture you want to show regardless of reality. I bow to you.

I would argue that since there was no tampering based on the radio show from Friday then the only reason to call is to try to make the Vinny radio show lose face. What other reason is there? Clarification? See, that is a leap of faith, kind of like believing in God. There is no proof, so all you can do is believe one way or the other.

Starting out the season at 2-1 with Zorn looking like he knows what he is doing, why would we look to change coaches? The only reason that the conversation about Lane Kiffen could have been tampering is if the Redskins needed to hire a head coach. Since there was no need, just why was the clarification needed?

That is the point that is unclear in this. So, as you say, Occam's Razor would point to tarnishing Vinny or the Skins.

Please help me to understand this. I know you are able to with your dexterity with words.

JLC said that the WaPo editor posted their statement online and that he did not want to talk about it and did not know what good talking about it would do.

I appreciate the compliments Redskins Fan, but I am far from a defense attorney. I can always dream though...

The reason your argument does not hold water (attempting to make the radio show lose face) is because JLC has been 100% silent on the matter. He wrote nothing, posted nothing, reported nothing, leaked nothing. He hasn't even hinted at it. As soon as he found out his hunch was wrong, he was dead silent.

If he DID want to make the show lose face, and he DID call the NFL Office's knowing nothing was wrong, then there must have been a plan for JLC to do something to make everything public. This is where your argument is missing a step.

Vinny was the one who made everything public. Vinny was the one who brought this whole thing out in the open. He did this unprompted, out of his own will. JLC had nothing to do with it. In the end, I don't buy the argument.

My opinion? I think JLC had the idea that Vinny could have slipped up. He thought Vinny could have said something (or could say something in the future) that would be construed as tampering. It doesn't take much to be viewed as tampering -- just a simple hint that a member of another organization would be welcome could possibly suffice. He called the league office for clarification. Nothing more. As a "Redskins Insider", this situation would have dire consequences for the franchise. Therefore, it's a part of his job to do as much when he feels he has a lead.

In the end, his hunch was wrong, and he did absolutely nothing. That's where it ended on his part. To me, he did nothing more than any other zealous reporter would do. If he falsely reported something, then I'd have an issue with him. But he didn't. That's my take.

Darrell, only problem is that the Redskins decisively beat almost all of these guys in the 2 games between the teams that mattered the most, i.e. the only 2 times they met in the playoffs....the NFC Championships in 1972 and 1982. Both games won by the REDSKINS by 2 TDs or more. So the reality is that your team couldn't hang with the Skins in the big games, and where it really counts...on the field and not on paper.

In the last post, I rather persuasively wrote:

OK Skins Nation, try this on for size (though I fear you may not like the fit):

Aint no combination of Redskins greats who could hang with this team:

QB: Staubach
RB: Dorsett
FB: Moose Johnston
WR: TO, Irvin, Drew Pearson, Bob Hayes
TEs: Whitten, Novacek
Ts: Eric Williams, Rayfield Wright
Gs: Larry Allen, Leonard Davis
C: Andre Gurourde

DEs: Harvey Martin and Ed "Too Tall" Jones
DTs: Bob Lilly and Randy White
LBs: Lee Roy Jordan, Ware, Chuck Howley
CBs: Deion Sanders, Mel Renfro
Ss: Cliff Harris and Darren Woodson
Kr: Bob Hayes

Coach: Tom Landry
score against Skins all-time team: 45-16 Boys Win Big, Real real real big. I'm Darrell Dallas and I wholeheartedly approve this message.

4th, t_e, you guys have to understand it's more nuanced than "JLaC backers" vs "Vinny backers," don't you?

I disagree with a lot of the axe-grinding opinions Jasno has about this team, and I believe he's acting stubborn and petty in this ongoing feud with Vinny, but I love the insider info he provides about my beloved team, and I have met him in person and genuinely like him. Does that make me a "JLaC backer"? I think I've demonstrated I don't "back" him unequivocally.

I disagree with a lot of the decisions Vinny has made while running this team, and while I don't have a tremendous amount of confidence in or enthusiasm about him, I support him because I think he's sticking around (the Wes Unseld to Snyder's Abe Pollin?) so ultimately I want him to succeed in terms of helping my beloved team hoist the Lombardi. Does that make me not a "Vinny backer"?

What was the question?

Oh yeah... Cowboy it was hard to hate: Emmitt Smith. (I mean as a running back, not as a person addressing an audience via a microphone.)

Nate, I agree the lines aren't very solid. I tgoes issue by issue.

But this issue is overshadowing what's at hand:

Dallas Week.

Also, is it me or has Row Williams gotten slimmer? Or is that a new guy with 31 on? Why did he change his number?

He changed his number hoping QB's would not recognize him, because he can not cover my daughter. The new 31 is a rookie who is actually better than Williams.

WaPo Sports Editor: Hey Jason, can you come into my office for a minute?

Jason La: Hmmm? Sorry. I was daydreaming over my Ozzie Newsome screensaver. What's up?

WaPo Sports Editor: What's this I hear about Vinny Cerrato saying you tried to call the NFL about tampering?

Jason La: Look, there's a perfectly good explanation for...HE STARTED IT, IT'S HIS FAULT! IF HE HADN'T PROVOKED ME BY DOING THINGS LIKE RUNNING THE REDSKINS AND MAKING DECISIONS FOR THE TEAM!

WaPo Sports Editor: He's the Exec VP over there, Jason. It is his job to make decisions for that team, and it is your job to report on them, not make trouble.

Jason La: Well, I don't know what he's trying to do with that radio show of his. Media outlets shouldn't be used to attack other people. I mean, take my RI blog for instance - do I ever use it to make personal attacks on...(voice trails off sheepishly as he realizes hypocrisy)

WaPo Editor: See Jason...look. I'm going to go to bat for you in public over this. But you need to agree to tone down the personal stuff and stick to what you are good at, you know, talking about Baltimore ska bands, hyping the Ravens draft picks, yucking it up with Jerry Coleman, stuff like that.

Jason La: But, who's gonna do Redskins stuff?

WaPo Sports Editor: Well, that's why we brought in Jason Reid.

good take psps23.

Jason strikes me as the kind of guy who wouldn't go trolling the internets trying to interpret what constitutes tampering. He'd pick up the phone and call a source, like someone in the NFL, who'd know.

then move on.

HERE IS MY GLOG

Things Un-noticed

I wanted to re-watch the game since I was at FEDEX, there are just certain things you miss when not watching it on TV. Here are some things I noticed, and hopefully this informs the masses that couldn’t watch or can’t re-watch it.

1) Jason Campbell

He has made great strides over the last 3 games. I would say we are lucky to have him in there, because if Collins, or God forbid Colt were in there, we would easily be 0-3.

JC eyes were my focus, as were his feet. It seems that drill that JZ used that got so much fanfare (throwing blocking pads) has helped JC immensely. His eyes were always down field, he kept his feet moving in the pocket and was reading his progressions.

He also was throwing strikes, on balance, off-balance, off the wrong foot. His one pass to ARE, where he fit it between the defenders to ARE's outside shoulder as ARE was going the other way, was the only place to put it and a spectacular throw. And lets give credit to ARE for adjusting quickly and making that catch.

2) The O line

Zona blitzed 5 or 6 people pretty often from what I could see, and our line blocked them well, giving JC time to do all that stuff I mentioned above.

Last year under Gibbs, we would keep more blockers than were blitzers, and a lot of times we would lose that battle. On sunday, there were numerous times where they had five rushers and we had 5 blockers and kept them at bay. There were times it was 6 on 6, or even 6 blitzers and 5 blockers, and again JC came away unscathed.

They say the odd man blitzer is on the QB, and most of the time JC had his outlet and his check downs in order. That is a main tenet of the WCO, getting the ball out quickly and it seems to keep JC comfortable. Remeber last year how bad he looked without his hot reads etc...

Even times our oline still gave JC time, clogging up the middle so JC wouldnt have to worry about that extra blitzer, handling the odd man situation nicely.

This obviously has major implications in the passing game, as JC found the open guy more times than not which produced positive yards.

3) Thomas' negated TD

As others probably have mentioned, it was an Unnecessary Roughness penalty not unsportsmanlike conduct, and it was valid.

CP and Dockett, while the play was still live BTW, were jawing at each other and Heyer came in from the blind side and blasted Dockett. Deserved penalty.

On the flip side, the play clock did not run out on Warner and the whistle blew as the pass was in the air. Our D didnt quit, they got beat, and the play should have stood.

That penalty seemed to deflate Zona, and Warner got frustrated and never regained composure.

So lets just say we were lucky there, because that would have been a huge momentum swing from which we may not have recovered.

4) Zona's dirty play

This was obvious on almost every tackle, especially with CP. The tackle that really got CP riled up was the tackle out of bounds during the 4th where the MLB grabbed CP around the throat and whipped him out of bounds, bending him backwards.

Zorn ran up the middle on the next play, and after CP was down, Dockett flew in, maybe unable to stop, but he certainly led with the helmet, almost hammering it down on the back of CP's head.

That is where CP got in his face and Heyer was standing right there to interject for his RB. Good for Heyer for sticking up for CP on the TD pass to Thomas, just wished he had done it at a different time.

Other than that, it was easy to see from watching that there was an effort to put an elbow in every players throat after the tackle. Very obvious when watching it, I would be sending the tape in if I were the skins.

5) Dline play

Something was wrong with Carter in this game. The camera did not have him on focus very often, but when they did he was getting tossed like a rag doll.

The Zona left tackle used Carters leverage, or lack thereof, to throw him off balance. On one running play, Carter had contain and just dove inside (where the D Tackles were which makes no sense) as the back scampered outside.

Another time, the LT just let Carter get off balance and threw him to the ground. It reminded me of that form of Martial Arts where you use the other persons momentum against them. And i think Carter studies Martial Arts.... again something is wrong.

Golston is a beast, and should be Vinnys shining Draft pick for years to come. He beat double teams a lot with great hand movement, reminded me of Griff when he was beasting out for us a couple years ago.

6) Doughty TD coverage

Wish I could find a better camera angle for this, because it may have been Landry's fault.

Springs released Fitz into the deep secondary, and it seemed that they were playing bracket with Landry and Doughty. Landry had the left side of the deep half (the side Fitz ended up on to catch the TD) and Doughty had the right.

As Fitz came across the deep middle, he was edging to Doughtys right side, and Laron jumped to underneath coverage and Doughty should have had over top to that side. Similarly, if Fitz was going deep left, Landry should cover deep and Doughty should have underneath.

So Landry bit on the shoulder move to Doughty’s deep half and left Doughty having to make up for that mistake and cover Laron’s right side deep half.

Maybe I am wrong about what the coverage was, maybe Doughty was always responsible for deep in any bracket situation, although that really doesn’t make sense since Laron is the faster of the two.

7) Predictions

We ‘escaped’ with a win Sunday. I guess you could play the ‘what if’ game all day long, but our win wasn’t as convincing as it first seemed. Zorn has a knack for 4th quarter play calling, but we have yet to put together a full 4 quarters.

We have Dallas this week, and their Offense and Defense is much more dynamic than Arizona’s. I think we will have trouble with them and see a double-digit loss.

But that is not all doom and gloom. If our 2-quarter lapses stop happening, we would have beat Zona easily, which would have changed the entire way the game shakes out and my prediction for this week. But, this really is to be expected with a Rook head coach, feeling his way through the play calling as well as our new offense that we seem to be slowly getting good at or comfortable with.

So while I see a loss to Dallas and possibly Philly, I still think we have a pretty good team, and the flashes of great football we have shown are encouraging considering all of the ‘new’ factors mentioned above.

Anyway, just one Zebra’s opinion.

Zebra,

Pretty good summary, disagree with you on the play clock he was running it to one second everytime and got caught on that play and the defenders most certainly stopped playing.

You are predicting a Double digit loss, we were not as good last year as we are now and we lost by a couple there and we killed them here, not sure why you are predicting that. There secondary is terrible and can be thrown on a Philly proved, There offense is good but Jessica is known to throw alot of Int's, we have never had a problem stopping Barber.

If we do loose I think it is a game like last years very close, comes down to the wire.

I think we can beat Philly they have nothing a WR, and Westbrook is hurt. McNabb normally kills us with running, well he does not do that anymore.

Zebra,

Insightful stuff.

On the Heyer penalty, though, I maintain that it was a ninny call. The play was still live, and if Dockett is going to stop on the play and start jawing instead of keeping his head on a swivel and finishing the play, then that's on him. If Campbell pulls the ball down and runs, or if he cuts back toward the pocket to buy time, you can bet that Dockett would be in pursuit. But I'm not aware of any rule that says you can't blindside a guy when the play is live. I think the refs could see that there was trouble brewing with Dockett and threw the flag to prevent things from getting out of hand.

On Doughty's coverage, he got pulled after that TD and never saw the field again. So whatever the scheme or assignment was, the coaches seemed to lay it at Doughty's feet.

I don't necessarily see a double-digit loss in Dallas. We played them close last year in Dallas (I think lost by 5 and Campbell threw a pick in the end zone on a potential game winning drive). I think this year we are playing with more confidence and just look like a better team. I think Dallas is the same as they were last year. Romo is always good for a handful of bonehead plays per game, and if we can capitalize on those moments instead of letting him get away with them, we'll be in it.

He's lost weight chasing all those WR's down the field.

Floun;

They were not showing the play clock on that play, but the talking heads all said it had 1 second left.

I disagree that we werent as good last year... based on what our record? That isnt a great indicator. We were an okay team last year as well.

We havent put together 4 quarters, they shellacked GB who has a good offense by getting to the QB.

We dont have to stop just barber now with Jones.

As for Philly, Westbrook isnt hurt and will be playing this weekend.

In my award-winning analysis of yesterday, I neglected to add one B. Kilmer to my list of all time most irritating Redskins from a Boys perspective. It was galling to have that guy complete passes on the Boys, given that half of his throws looked like he had punted them.

Zebra thanks for the recap I was at the game to couldnt find a peplay of the game anywhere since then. I am fine with Heyer taking that penalty, One of my problems with Heyer is his seemingly lack of intesity and sometimes urgency. CP said they were playing dirty all day and took Heyers back after the games in the presser defending what Heyer did so I will to. Doughty getting beat by Fitz isnt terrible hes been schooled by much worse. I feel that this team is really on par with where we were last year, then we should have been 3-0 with that 2nd half collapse against NY. This year it was NY again. I feel the diffrence is JC play overall is better, mainly his ball protection- no fumbels or int on him or the offense as a whole is just huge. And the fact that he is spreeading the ball around so well. The running game is similar to last years howver I see more burts from portis, hes gotten off to a quick start, sometimes it takes huim a while particularly getting to the end zone no prob this year. Think we can be competitive with D on offense we just need to man up on the line and win it in the trenches.

Posted by: Stu | September 25, 2008 8:36 AM | Report abuse

From the DC Sports Blog:

"I think they began to play dirty," Portis said. "They cheap-shotted Randy [Thomas] early on in the game unnecessarily, then they were getting away with some things, you know, the extra pushing. And I think one time Santana got tackled, if you see the guy get up he kneed Santana in the face when he was still on the ground. They brought all the extra activity to the game that wasn't needed, so we just let them know, we CAN play the same way.

"We really want to do it within the rules, and I think you seen Stephon [Heyer] lay [Darnell] Docket out, wipe him off his feet, and the ref want to throw a flag. I think it was a legit call, but oh, that's unnecessary. But they do unnecessary stuff, and they never said anything about it. Like [Dockett] tackling me and pulling my helmet, or jerking my head back: that's unnecessary, because if I get hurt or I took a cheap shot at you and one of us mess up the other's career, then it's like, 'Oh, he tried that intentionally.' But all game you been pulling face masks and doing the extra stuff after the play, so I think the refs just need to pay attention to that."

Who ever said the Cardinals were taking cheap shots was apparently correct.

Just curious, had something along the lines of what is happening with Plax in NY, happened here in DC, would it have been bigger news??
