Shabingus Update

Nate in the PDX sent out an email today with the blog outing to the Nats game next month getting closer, and I wanted to pass it along for anyone else interested. The game is June 7 and it looks like I will be able to make it barring any sort of unusual circumstance popping up. Skins not doing anything that day and Lauren has given the me the green light. Cindy is also slated to attend and I'm gonna try to get Jason Reid - a longtime former baseball scribe - to join us as well, though he may have a family commitment.

Anyway, I'll let Nate take over from here. Here's the info from him:

REMINDER: a big offseason meet-up is being planned, and it is likely to be a shabingus. A lot of the "regulars" have already confirmed they'll be coming, including locals and some folks from out of town. Simply put, you should be there if you can, especially those of you in DC/VA/MD. The more, the merrier!

WHEN: Saturday, June 7
WHERE: Washington, DC
WHAT: happy hour from 4pm until about 6pm, THEN over to the new ballpark for Nationals-Giants at 7pm

For more details and to RSVP, please send me an email: nateinthepdx@gmail.com

Some tickets still available in our group for the ball game, and I need to hear from you soon if you'd like to be part of that group. Otherwise you can buy your own tickets to the game, or if you like, just come to the happy hour. Either way, please let me know with an email.

-Nate in the PDX

P.S. For the record, this event is not officially associated with the Washington Post... though I do hope some of the fine Post people who make the blog possible will be joining us!

It also doesn't help that I'm 2500 miles across US America.

As I'm sure will come as a shock to many of you it turns out a teacher's salary doesn't provide for private jet use.

Has there been any discussion of group wide fashion coordination? It'd be kinda cool to see a TV shot of 30 people wearing Skins gear or Shabingus shirts.

Or is that too Disney Land/Floridians/retired people/field trip?

I don't know the answer to that SF.

One of the places I used to live in back in "Merrie Olde Englande" used to have regular visits from those "if it's Wednesday it must be Bath" sort of Floridated trippers that you describe above.

I always found them pleasant but confused, seldom odd. Now in later years I find myself pleasant but confused also - except without the pleasant bit - so I don't know whether they would constitute 'odd' to me.

But I do know that a bunch of ne'er-do-wells such as we happy few probably would look odd if we all had the same shirts on! Maybe like some bunch of tardy millenarians.

4th Floor, I was joking (or was I?) that I would bring big dorky lanyards with nametags so we can identify each other at the meet-up.

Lanyard = giant shoestring loop worn around the neck, usually with a badge or keyring or map or something like that hanging from it.

http://www.amazon.com/WASHINGTON-REDSKINS-LANYARD-TICKET-KEYCHAIN/dp/B000R8YKPQ/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_k2a_1_img?pf_rd_p=304485601&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-2&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000B2VAXI&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0YYXKVR8RM39B2QV6Z97

I'm really not going to bring a box of lanyards, and nametags, to the meet-up. I'm really not. I promise.

I would like to broach the subject of Cowboyt hatin up here, and them saying its not a rivalry down there.

THis much is true, skin fans hold the rivalry in high esteem. Some say we shouldnt, and that cowpie fans have it right, they dont care b/c we havent been a threat to them etc...

Well I say shabingus. There are a lot of cowpie fans in the DC area, none of which were born that way, and just lazily jumped on their bandwagon in the 90's.

I would say more than half of the non-dallas native cowpies fans are bandwagoners.

And the reason a majority of girls fans dont think our rivalry is important is because they have no sense of history between the two.

See, to be a bandwagoner, you need to have a spirit of trying to look better than others. Jumping on the hot team, and actually staying with it b/c its the in thing. They have this air of needing to be superior, so to engage in rivalry talk is beneath them.

So they lack the football purity to understand the rivalry. They have no sense of the history, werent born to love us and hate them... which just points to the entire cowboys mystique, that if it werent for the 90's they would only have half the fans they do now.

I will forever take a 2-14 season over a 15-1 season where the one is that we lost to them. Because in the end, superbowls come and go, good teams, bad teams... in the end... its us vs them.

How bout them b#tch@$$ cowboys?? They suck and they choke and tony Rhomo cant sing and is gonna marry a girl with a lower IQ that PI!!

(As usual) apropos of nothing, I was going to respond to SF's reference to the "quasi-fascist state of the East" with some oblique reference to Celebration, FL when I found a list of 'famous residents' for the Florida branch of Stepford and found it lists one "Adam Vinatieri" as living there.

Maybe we now know why he's such a good kicker - he's actually a Disney animatronic gizmo thingy!

Nate - based on all the declarations(accusations) of "geek", "nerd", "dork" etc. coupled with variations on 'little yellow bus riders" that have appeared on RI over the months I think lanyards + nametags would be highly appropriate.

Renovated Hall of Fame opens to public

CANTON, Ohio (AP) -- A ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday marked the opening of the $4 million renovated wings at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Former Cleveland Browns star Dante Lavelli helped do the honors as the new wings were shown to the public.

Renovations to the hall's enshrinee mementos, unchanged for nearly 30 years, include video and audio to help bring the game's greatest players and moments to life. A bench features nine lifelike figures in uniform.

The last major update came in 2003 when the Hall of Fame gallery was updated with touch-screen kiosks complementing the bronze busts of each enshrinee.

I didnt say anything about a bad year. Just if we got to the Champ game, and lost, what were those 17 wins for?

Like I said, the rivalry over the years is more important that making it to a champ game and not going to the SB....or losing the SB.

I get much more enjoyment over sticking a sweep of the girls in their face than a successful year in which we dont win a SB.

But that is my opinion. And it will alwys be that way. From my first memory of football being the brawl in D-Town, to Santana's two TD's under 4 mins to play to the blocked punt where the late-great ST took us into FG position, those memories are much more indelible than an unsuccessful run at the SB.

A pre-sitcom Bob Newhart reference does not pass unnoticed as long as I'm reading this blog. Of course, I have to take some time off to hunt down the captain's door and help Sir Walter ship his terbaccy back to Europe, but aside from that...

To those who didn't know Woody Allena and Bob Newhart did standup before the other stuff, discovering it is kinda like finding those pre-Wings McCartney olatters.

All kidding aside Z, do you think that might be because the pickings have been slim for a few years now and the 'rivalry' is all there has been for the most part? The reason I ask is because I hear some Fins fans saying almost the same thing about the Patriots.

For me, while I enjoy us sticking it to the Patriots plenty, I would trade them sweeping us every year for a real shot at winning it all, even if we failed to do so.

My father was very much a 'meat and potatoes' guy, but he loved Bob Newhart's comedy and Stephane Grapelli, Django Reinhardt and George Shearing's jazz music.

I inherited my love for those performers straight from him, although we never agreed on Python or any of the more surreal humo(u)r that I also love, he used to call it "rubbish".

I appreciate you picking up the reference!

It's a great question, my anonymous friend at 4:30pm. I expect to be thoroughly confused after about 7 minutes and, in my frustration, to give up trying to keep people's names straight. And then I'll probably just retreat to the corner and twirl my lanyard.

As for me, I'm going to find a happy middle ground and just go by the name "Nate." To each his or her own.

So, are you coming or not? I've received email from people who post sporadically or not at all, but not a single email from anyone claiming to be one of our recent anonymouses. Come out and play, peeps.

Rumor mill grinding about Joe Horn going to the Girls.

That might get confusing.
Is it Horn's Sharpie and TO's cellphone or the other way around?
What if TO signs the cellphone by accident?
Will they have to wrestle over who gets to stand in triumph on the star?
Won't that much hot air concentrated in one place signal the tipping point for global warming?

I was wondering how you would try and pull off your costume Nate. But I was thinking more along the lines of interpretive dance or performance art. Something that Tobias Funke would do would be great.

I'd like to request some RIBs (Redskin Insider Bonuspoints)for attempts (albeit profoundly lame) to make the occaisonl fubol related post.

Does RFD have a floor on the 4th level for drinking purposes?

Posted by: 4th | May 13, 2008 5:45 PM | Report abuse

I learned about a new term today (that I had been mis-using previously), "pooch punt":

http://www.redskins.com/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=11189

" ... Asked about drafting Brooks, Smith said: "The timing was right. Obviously, he's a good player coming out [of college] and he has good leg strength. We just needed competition at the position."

Brooks must show in training camp that he has more than just a powerful leg. He must show he can convert pooch punts and kick directionally, important skills for NFL punters.

"These young kickers and punters that don't make it in the NFL--they sometimes don't understand that you have to have more than a powerful leg," Smith said. ..."

The intergoogles tell me that a pooch punt is like an on-side kick ... only its a punt. "A pooch punt is often defined as being inside the 20-yard line. It can be used to place a ball so the kicking team can attempt to retrieve it, to place it so that the receiving team is forced to play the ball rather than down it, or to put it far from a skilled receiver."

I'm sure plenty of peeps up here knew that already, but I had just thought it was a "bad" punt ... and I didn't know about the strategery of it.

Okay, I've been thinking about this for a while now and I've come to a decision. I love you guys, every one of you, and I wouldn't feel good about myself if I didn't pay the tab for the whole shabingus. Drink up all of you -- the afternoon's on me!

"you have to have more than a powerful leg," Smith said.

Posted by: dcsween | May 13, 2008 5:45 PM

Uh, I think he misspoke. Look at Frost. He's getting by on less than a powerful leg.

Posted by: talent evaluator | May 13, 2008 5:49 PM | Report abuse

Did it say anything about his pooch punting or directional kicking skills? Can he kick a punt inside the 5 and put of bounds from any spot and regardless of wind conditions?

Also I volunteered to help PDX think of ways around the name thing. My first idea was costumes that properly describe us.
Dorf would get a LOTR outfit of Gimglie. Readcoat, well we know know what he would be wearing. Talent Evaluator gets to dress like Bill Belecheck, and so forth.

Heck, I'd pay just to see Jasno and Barno within shouting distance of each other!

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - A woman called police saying Buffalo Bills rookie wide receiver James Hardy was beating up his father and had pulled a gun when she yelled for him to stop.

The witness told officers she called out for Hardy to stop after hearing a loud noise in the back yard about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, according to a city police report.

Fort Wayne police spokesman Michael Joyner said Tuesday no charges were filed because Hardy was gone when officers arrived and Hardy's father did not want to press charges.

The police report quoted the elder Hardy as saying his son has a lot of anger toward him because he was in prison when his son was young.

Neither Hardy nor his agent, Eugene Parker, immediately responded to phone messages seeking comment.

The 6-foot-6 receiver left Indiana a year early to enter the NFL draft and was picked by the Bills in the second round last month.

That's too bad about Hardy... if he doesn't learn to manage his anger, he might well end up in the old cellblock just like dear old dad was when he was little!

... and the cycle will continue....

I'm pretty sure that the pooch punt was the main offensive staple of both the Spartans and the Browns for most of the 70's, 80's, and 90's.
