Shanahan cancels afternoon practice

Washington Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan canceled the team's walk-through practice Sunday afternoon, opting instead to hold player meetings.

The afternoon practices over the past two days have been hour-long walk-through workouts in which players have worn just jersey and shorts and have gone over the team's new schemes, never doing more than jogging through the plays. The practices allow coaches to work the plays against other defensive schemes the Redskins may see this season, Shanahan said on Saturday.

"What we try to do is take our morning practice and do all the things we did in the morning against different fronts," Shanahan said.

The decision may have come to give them team some extra rest after the third straight day of high-intensity morning workouts. During his press conference on Sunday afternoon, Shanahan said it appeared as though players were tired and as a result made more mistakes.

Shanny can "spare the rod" it seems.
The optimist in me looks at a break like this as a result of the situation being under control and things are generally progressing nicely. Perhaps, with haynesworth as an exception, the team is at least on-schedule as far as the coaching staff is concerned.

“Many of the freedoms we enjoy here in the U.S. are quickly eroding as the nation transforms from the land of the free into the land of the enslaved, but what I’m about to share with you takes the assault on our freedoms to a whole new level. You may not be aware of this, but many Western states, including Utah, Washington and Colorado, have long outlawed individuals from collecting rainwater on their own properties because, according to officials, that rain belongs to someone else.

As bizarre as it sounds, laws restricting property owners from “diverting” water that falls on their own homes and land have been on the books for quite some time in many Western states. Only recently, as droughts and renewed interest in water conservation methods have become more common, have individuals and business owners started butting heads with law enforcement over the practice of collecting rainwater for personal use.”

Walter Lippmann, an American intellectual, writer and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner brought forth one of the first works concerning the usage of mass media in America. In Public Opinion (1922), Lippmann compared the masses to a “great beast” and a “bewildered herd” that needed to be guided by a governing class. He described the ruling elite as “a specialized class whose interests reach beyond the locality.” This class is composed of experts, specialists and bureaucrats. According to Lippmann, the experts, who often are referred to as “elites,” are to be a machinery of knowledge that circumvents the primary defect of democracy, the impossible ideal of the “omnicompetent citizen.” The trampling and roaring “bewildered herd” has its function: to be “the interested spectators of action,” i.e. not participants. Participation is the duty of “the responsible man”, which is not the regular citizen.

Mass media and propaganda are therefore tools that must be used by the elite to rule the public without physical coercion. One important concept presented by Lippmann is the “manufacture of consent”, which is, in short, the manipulation of public opinion to accept the elite’s agenda. It is Lippmann’s opinion that the general public is not qualified to reason and to decide on important issues. It is therefore important for the elite to decide ”for its own good” and then sell those decisions to the masses.

“That the manufacture of consent is capable of great refinements no one, I think, denies. The process by which public opinions arise is certainly no less intricate than it has appeared in these pages, and the opportunities for manipulation open to anyone who understands the process are plain enough. . . . as a result of psychological research, coupled with the modern means of communication, the practice of democracy has turned a corner. A revolution is taking place, infinitely more significant than any shifting of economic power. . . . Under the impact of propaganda, not necessarily in the sinister meaning of the word alone, the old constants of our thinking have become variables. It is no longer possible, for example, to believe in the original dogma of democracy; that the knowledge needed for the management of human affairs comes up spontaneously from the human heart. Where we act on that theory we expose ourselves to self-deception, and to forms of persuasion that we cannot verify. It has been demonstrated that we cannot rely upon intuition, conscience, or the accidents of casual opinion if we are to deal with the world beyond our reach.”
–Walter Lippmann, Public Opinion

Posted by: Debaitor | August 1, 2010 5:23 PM | Report abuse

It might be interesting to note that Lippmann is one of the founding fathers of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the most influential foreign policy think tank in the world. This fact should give you a small hint of the mind state of the elite concerning the usage of media.

“Political and economic power in the United States is concentrated in the hands of a “ruling elite” that controls most of U.S.-based multinational corporations, major communication media, the most influential foundations, major private universities and most public utilities. Founded in 1921, the Council of Foreign Relations is the key link between the large corporations and the federal government. It has been called a “school for statesmen” and “comes close to being an organ of what C. Wright Mills has called the Power Elite – a group of men, similar in interest and outlook shaping events from invulnerable positions behind the scenes. The creation of the United Nations was a Council project, as well as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.”
- Steve Jacobson, Mind Control in the United States

Some current members of the CFR include David Rockefeller, Dick Cheney, Barack Obama, Hilary Clinton, mega-church pastor Rick Warren and the CEOs of major corporations such as CBS, Nike, Coca-Cola and Visa.

Zorn all over again.
If Shanahan is giving the team a day off this soon due to tiredness I can almost guarantee you we will have an out of shape team with a soft underbelly. Everybody is resting and nobody has proven a thing. Just goes to show Albert Haynesgirth isn't the only one who's out of shape and overpaid. New sheriff in town my eye. Get ready for another high draft pick in April.

Stang,
Just like the underpowered 72 stang you call yourself, your statement is weak. Have you seen the list of injuries this weekend around the league? Injuries occur more frequently when tired after several days of contact and the afternoon sessions are walk-thru's/jog thru's. Having team meetings to keep studying and learning nuances acan be more helpful sometimes. This camp and the coaching staff has no resemblance to the Zorn era in any way/shape/form. THe only way we have a high draft pick next year is if we trade Fat Al for one, and thats doubtful. Are you from Philly? all full of negataive.

A couple observations, Redskins Nation:

Shanahan is good with Xs and Os but the old iron fist isn't his way. He got canned in Denver for letting the players get away with too much, making bad personnel decisions and not paying much attention to the defensive side of the ball. Our offense will get a little bit better under Shanahan and we'll look like we almost have a professional team for the first time in decades. But don't drink the burgundy Kool-Aid, folks. The inmates are still running the nuthouse.

We're several years away from having a team we can be proud of and when we do have one Shanahan won't be here to enjoy it. Daniel Snyder will see to that.

My two cents and I'll re-visit the board around October.

I say we'll go 5-11 this year.

We have a porous offensive line, mediocre WRs and over-the-hill RBs. If Clinton Portis ran any slower he'd fall asleep before he passes the line of scrimmage. And he's injury-prone. Our defense is good enough to keep us in games but just bad enough to break our hearts.

We have a lot of holes to fill and you can't do it all in one year. On the plus side, I think the Danny will give Coach one more year after this one to take us deep into the playoffs. After that, he's toast.

Hi. My name is SonofNero, and I am a troll.

I've been posting since 2004. Sometimes I have changed my username to try to go cold turkey, but...I can't keep away. It's been six weeks since my last post. I keep trying not to post, but sometimes when I get stressed out, I just have to. I can't white knuckle it any more. So today, TROLL PARTY! YES!

The first step is to admit you are a troll. You keep coming back to RI because you can't help it. It's out of your controll. You're not a football expert, in fact you can't even pretend to be a football expert. You leave that to the Higher Powers. Your only excuse is that YOU ARE A COMPULSIVE FAN OF THE REDSKINS. There. Isn't that better?

Thanks for listening, O Higher Powers who are the Lords and Masters of the Blog.

Posted by: SonofNero | August 1, 2010 6:32 PM |

Actually being a compulsive fan of the Skins makes you exactly what this blog is looking for. No one on here is a football expert. We are all hacks, armchair qb's, and sunday afternoon GM's. Trolls are the ones that don't even attempt football related dialogues and just attack other posters or people like debaitor who don't even attack but attempt to incite. You, sonofnero, are neither from what I can remember. I have seen your handle before but don't recall you as being a troll. I guess I could be wrong.

frak,

I hear ya!

I say 5-11 because everything is fresh in my mind from last year. It wasn't just scheme. We lost a lot of games because our cupboard is pretty bare. Landry, Thomas, Kelly, etc. are major BUSTS and we got no young studs to replace them with. Vinny and the Danny didn't do us any favors.

And just think: the guy we used to lick our chops for when the Redskins played Philly is now our QB: Donovan F. McNabb. Dude has major accuracy problems and those problems only get highlighted in the 4th quarter. Philly traded him in-division for a reason. It's been awhile since I've been on the board but I know we ain't out of the woods yet.

5-11 is still improvement.

In thoses situations, I root for a demoralizing tie - with lot's of injuries to the key players and a few embarrassingly bad decisions from the coaches so sports reporters can dog them for the rest of their careers.

Is that too much to ask for?

Ummmm, I didn't say anything about my prediction being the goal. Super Bowl is the goal, dream and everything else. It's not like I'm on the board taking bets on 5-11. Unlike some, I want to be wrong about my prediction and I've probably been a Redskin longer than you. Now I'm a troll for just trying to inject some reality into the situation. It's getting to be where everybody's suspect on the board unless they say we're a shoo-in for the NFC championship. I'm just saying last year was real and you can't fill all those holes in a year. Sheesh!

Wise is an idiot, but he hit the nail on the head in today's column:

"McNabb needs Washington almost as much as it needs him. If he wins big here, No. 5 is on a first-ballot journey to Canton. That fact should not be discounted. Of course, this is a risk -- especially for a franchise that hasn't been fiscally sound in its big-ticket investments for a while."

The column reads like a public plea from McNabb's agent for an extension, but he does make a good point that McNabb needs this to work every bit as much as we do. He's one of the rare Redskin acquisitions that actually cares more about his legacy and winning than he does how many zeros are behind the numbers on his check. Hopefully the Skins get a deal done sooner rather than later.

brownwood--

Peter King (another guy you usually hate) wrote about resigning McNabb and here's what he said last week:

6. I think the Redskins have to sign Donovan McNabb long-term. The question is, at what price? I could see McNabb playing like the seventh-best quarterback in football in Mike Shanahan's offense; I could see him playing like the 20th-, too. I don't envy Bruce Allen here. If I were Allen, I'd string this thing along until November.

beep-beep, I'm not a big Peter King fan but I respect him a heckuva lot more than I do Mike Wise. King has a point, but I think McNabb has a better chance of succeeding than he does failing simply because this offense is a much better fit for his talents than the one in Philly. It'll be interesting to see, but I figure it's better to sign him now because if he has the kind of year we expect of him, he'll command a massive salary right up there with Manning/Brady. I figure we can save a few million by getting this thing done now.

Mike Golic (from Mike and Mike in the Morning) is going to run the same test that AH has failed twice. He hasn't played in the league in 14 years, and definitely is not in football shape. Tune in this morning to ESPN to watch . . . it should be interesting. If he is able to do two shuttle runs within the time given, then what does that say about AH? Plus, it will show that the test is very fair and that AH is just a fat azz who is out of shape and that Shanny is not "picking" on him . . . but we already know that!!!

Posted by: sjw1 | August 2, 2010 6:48 AM | Report abuse

sjw1, once the trainer came out and gave details about what the test entailed, it showed the test is fair. Hell, even Jeff Fisher--AH's old coach in TN--came out and said he runs the EXACT SAME TEST and that AH couldn't do it then either. There is literally NO defense of AH in this regard and anyone who does is legally and completely retarded.

I think Allen and company are just waiting on the outcome of the labor talks. Structuring a contract as large as the one McNabb will get will take a good understanding of how to fit it under the salary cap and since the cap won't exist until a new contract is signed, I don't look for Allen to rush right out there and do McNabb's contract. It is in both camps' best interests to say not getting the contract done is about other things: no smart player will throw the NFLPA under the bus for dragging their feet, and no good front office guy is going to say that not re-signing a pro-bowl quarterback is all about the money.

A 3rd round pick for AH is starting to sound good to me to get rid of this head case. Any takers ?
I'd like to see Brandon Banks return some P/KO this preseason. Don't see him sticking as a receiver from his spot on the depth chart. For his size, ya gotta give him credit for being out on the field with the big guys.

Below is the entire Fisher transcript on RI and he doesn't say AH failed the test in Tenn:

++++++++++++Fisher: Test Haynesworth failed twice with Redskins is the same one Titans use

The Redskins have come under scrutiny this week because of the conditioning test Pro Bowler Albert Haynesworth has been required to pass in order to participate in practice. Haynesworth has failed in two attempts to complete two timed 300-yard shuttle runs, and Coach Mike Shanahan has remained firm.

Some in the media have suggested Shanahan simply is making an example of Haynesworth, who skipped all but one day of Shanahan's first offseason program. But the Tennessee Titans, Haynesworth's former employer, handle things similarly for players who fail to participate enough in their workouts.

"That's the test we do - the 300-yard shuttle with a recovery time and then another one," Titans Coach Jeff Fisher told reporters. "What we do is ... if you've made a minimum number of offseason workouts, then the test is modified.

"Those that have been here for at least eight offseason workouts, it's a 300-yard shuttle, [but] they will run 50-yard increments instead of 25-yard shuttles, so it's a little bit easier. The 25-yard, 300-yard shuttle is an appropriate test for what kind of shape you're in."++++++++++

Can you produce a quote from somewhere else to back up your post? Fisher coluld have said what you claim but it would not have been in his best interest to have done so.

I have been out of the country but catching up on my Redskins reading yesterday I read a blurb on another Redskins' site about the competition between Brennan and Bartel. It sounded like Bartel was ahead - has looked pretty good at times - and Brennan is not looking too good. The team has been giving more reps to Bartel, implying that they know who is winning the race. Here's my question to the RI community: if Brennan is clearly stinking up the joint, does the team cut him now while there is an opportunity to bring in another quarterback to compete, do they cut him now and stand pat with what they have, therefore giving more reps to Bartel before the preseason, or do they hold on a little longer hoping something finally clicks with Brennan?

BTW, the articles have said Grossman is entrenched at number two so this is just a two horse race for the third string spot.

Peter King this morning on Albert Haynesworth:

I think Albert Haynesworth thinks Mike Shanahan's being unfair to him by forcing him to pass this conditioning test. I don't agree. Shanahan has two gate-keeping ways for players to be admitted to training camp. They can either participate in 50 percent or more of the offseason workouts at the Redskins' facility. Or they can complete a conditioning test.

For linemen, the test consists of two 300-yard shuttles (running 25 yards back and forth six times). The first 300-yard shuttle must be run in 70 seconds. Then the player gets a three-and-half-minute break. The second shuttle must be run in 73 seconds. Most teams have conditioning tests something (but not exactly) like this. The bottom line is if Haynesworth were in tip-top shape, he'd pass it. I think if a player has made $35 million in the past 16 months, he ought to be in tip-top shape entering camp.

How about Peter King [or any other reporter] finding out what AH actually does weigh?

Don't they understand the urgency here?
We had a poll where folks guessed on the RI how much AH would weigh when he reported.

On the other hand, with $35 M burning a hole in your pocket, you easy have access to:

1. Strippers
2. Ferraris
3. Power boats

Which distracts you from being in tip-top shape, doesn't it?

You've been away too long. You forgot the blog rules. We never use the word "cut" in the same sentence as Colt. Maybe you just misspelled the correct word? The word is "cult" not "cut."

So they should put a Ferrari 50 yards from his racing boat and have him run between the two of them six times in 70 seconds? The strippers can hold the stop watch.

I went back and looked...looks like I misread the post from a couple days ago.

Either way, if AH has had prior experience with the test, it stands to reason he should be able to pass it in under a week. Right now, he's not exactly on course to pull that off...

How long before Republicans are extinct? Who will replace their party?

Since majority of America is democrat, Will we ever see another republican president?

As long as big money buys elections, yes.

That's right. Because all Democrats are elected with $ they earned at their day jobs.

Take Obama for instance, his campaign was funded by cash from yard sales and lemonade stands...

The real difference between a Democrat and Republican is quite small on the political spectrum, and it will continue to shrink as the "independent swing voters" continue to be a legit force in the electorate...the real question is whether the U.S. will ever be able to sustain some kind of true multi-party system that will truly open up the spectrum of issues onto a much wider range.

I honestly don't see what the rush should be in signing McNabb long term. Make him play first.

I still cringe thinking about what the Skins already gave for this guy -- a 2nd and 3rd/4th let's not add insult to injury by spending $30 million. At least not before getting some of Albert's bonus money back...

brownie and Cindy Boren...errr...beep-beep,

Re: McNabb's extension

I've not yet read Wise or King on the matter, but did they make mention of a scenario where McNabb is a one-year rental here and then moves on to Arizona or Minnesota where he is just as likely - and probably more likely - to win a SB in the next 2-3 years??
