Shanahan noncommittal on O.J. Atogwe

If the Redskins have any interest in free agent safety O.J. Atogwe, head coach Mike Shanahan isn't tipping his hand. Atogwe, a five-year veteran, became an unrestricted free agent Wednesday when the St. Louis Rams chose not to extend him an offer.

"Well, even if I did [have interest], I wouldn't share that with you, for obvious reasons," Shanahan said. "But we're always interested to upgrade our football team and if it helped us with the right situation and the price is right and somebody's available, we're always going to look into it."

Shanahan made his comments at the conclusion of Wednesday's organized team activity (OTA). It was the squad's eighth OTA practice together, and Shanahan seems pleased with what he's seen so far.

The Redskins have some injuries that are slowly healing. Devin Thomas (hamstring) continues to practice at full speed, nose tackle Maake Kemoeatu appeared to amp up his sidework, Phillip Daniels (knee) didn't seem to miss a step, and linebacker Andre Carter was back participating.

"We limited [Carter's] reps, but it was very positive to see him go out there with the nickel and the base defense and get some reps," Shanahan said. "We just don't want to overdo it. I told him to be smart about it and he's a pretty smart guy, he's an experienced guy, so I think he'll be fine."

Overall, Shanahan seems very pleased with attendance at OTAs, though safety LaRon Landry, linebacker Rocky McIntosh, cornerback DeAngelo Hall and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth were absent Wednesday.

Punter Josh Bidwell wasn't present at the team's OTA media availability last week and wasn't around this week either. Shanahan didn't seem too concerned.

"I told him to stay home. He's got a few kids," Shanahan said. "The punters a lot of times come in and get in the way. But no, he's a good guy and he's going to be coming to the next camp."

The specialists at practice have been long snapper Nick Sundberg and kickers Graham Gano and Justin Medlock. With no punter, that means the kickers have had no holder. Gano has been holding for Medlock and vice versa.

Not familiar enough with Atogwe to know if he shuld come here. But, I do know the Rams now have an opening that they want to fill. Thinking we might explore trading one of our SS to them.

My question, since I'm not around the area anymore being in FL, is what the protocol is when seeing guys on the 'Skins in public? Let 'em be, wish them well, what? I'm 26 by the way and was stoked to run into a Skin being back in the area for 3 days. Too old?

A Few mother's days ago, I took wify and moms to Legal Seafood across the MCI Center. My wife kept saying the guy behind us looks familiar. I looked back, and I was like 'Oh. That's Eddie Jordan' and then my moms blew up the spot. She kept turning and starring until Eddie was forced to acknowledge us. We all gave the wave and it was back to lunch for us.....

I'm not exactly sure how wise it is to have a guy holding for the other guy he's competing with for a job. Kinda hard to tell if a guy can kick if his competitor keeps giving him the Lucy/Charlie Brown treatment. Just sayin'...

honestly don't think his posts were that different from anyone else's. maybe a little more opinion, but that's all. no biggie either way.

having multiple bloggers might diffuse some of the hamster antagonism, although the header probably should be adjusted to reflect the new committee approach to things.

by the way, sounds like MS and crew might have some (undetermined) interested in Atogwe... a simple "no" would have been sufficient otherwise.

Here's a funny sports celbrity story:

Last Year at the Barbeque Battle downtown, Caron Butler was taking pictures with kids and what not. We thought in would be a good idea for our son Karon and Caron to take a pic together since their names basically were pronounced the same. We got their at the tale end when he was wrapping up...My wife was yelling out, 'Caron! Can you take a picture with my son? Y'all have the same name! Please! Caron! Can you take a picture with my son?! You can't leave him hanging! Y'all got the same name!'

After saying that for about two more minutes, Butler finally brgrudgingly gave in and forced a really good smile for the picture I took. Only woman...I tell ya!

O.J. Atogwe would absolutely fill a need. For the record I'm all for getting this guy on board. He's a TRUE FS with instincts. still youg and in his prime. I'd hate to see a Reed doughty or Horton back there. I like those guys but they are SS and are quality back ups to LL30. Moore has the speed to be a FS but is still a work in progress. O.J. Atogwe will legitimize that FS position which is ESSENTIAL. Look at the saints D with theie FS.

Hmmm, kickers holding for kickers. Maybe it will keep them from complaining about bad holds in the future 'cause now they'll know firsthand how hard of a job it is.

Just a few weeks back, I was in line at Staples and I heard a lady walk up to the guy behind me in line and said something like "I don't know if you like getting recognized still, but I'm a huge fan".

Of course I turned around and saw that it was Art Monk. I didn't say anything though because the cashier called me up as next right at the same time, and since I only turned around and saw him because I overheard someone else say something I'd have felt kind of dumb.

I'm 27, but I don't think age matters. If I had noticed him on my own I'd have definatly said hi and told him I was glad to see him make it into the hall of fame or something like that.

5. The defense is definitely ahead of the offense. Saw a number of interceptions today. Saw Lendy Holmes, Chris Wilson and Alvin Bowen pick off passes -- Andre Carter dropped one -- and a number of others bat them down. Rex Grossman was the most victimized. He did not look sharp. Holmes dropped another possible pick (from Grossman).

so I'm all for Atogwe, but only if we don't get locked into an expensive contract that might be regretted later.

it's not my money to burn... realize it's an uncapped year, but unclear on the potential ramifications given uncertainty regarding a new labor agreement.

also seems like most teams are taking advantage of the situation to reduce payroll costs in the absence of a salary floor.

Okay, I saw the vids and have heard the reviews, and this guy would be a good fit at free safety here, particularly as former Haslett player...And, yar, it does look like they're mulling their options over him at this moment...As for Westbrook, the only thing I can thingk is that Parker is underachieving or Portis is the other "big name" Skin in the HGH debacle...Maybe we can shoot some epoxy between his brain and skull....

Well, perfect time to share this; I used to work at the Rennasiance Center at Dulles, generally right next door to the old Redskins Park, during the 1987 season, no less.

The 'Skins used the meeting rooms right above us to vote on the strike, both coming and going. Trust me, when they were filing in to vote to strike, no one spoke to them. We heard later that there were quite a lot of raised voices during the meeting.

Ricky Sanders was quite often found in our break room, since we had many ladies in my office, and he was a single man at the time. Folks would come up to me and see "Ricky Sanders is in the break room; c'mon go talk to him, he's cool" I just felt uncomfortable, and wanted to let him go about his business, whatever that might be.

All of that is to say, where I lived and worked, you didn't go through a week without running into SOMEONE on the team; it was just living in the Dulles area at that time. Kind of kept it in perspective at the time, but I kind of regret not taking a little advantage, to grab an autograph or something to give to my kids.

this guy sounds like a great p/u, but unless the Rams have another really good FS, and if this guy is really good and in his prime, why would they not tender him?

Maybe OJ is too young for the Skins to sign. There's got to be a geezer safety out there somewhere.

Funny celebrity story:

Sean Taylor threw a full, unopened beer bottle at my car on George Mason Drive in Arlingon, VA one night.

I think it was in January. He had the top down and was driving like a maniac.

Not really that funny, actually. He didn't like that I jammed the brakes on when he hit his high beams behind me -- in the "slow" lane, no less. So, as he passed he threw a cold one in front of my car.

If I had a gun in the car at the time... I'm afraid I would have used it.

OH, and I think it was actually a Rolling Rock. Coulda been a Heineken, though, but I remember thinking it odd that a black dude in a convertible BMW was drinking Rolling Rock.

Maybe it's just me. I expected, you know, a "black drink."

Which would have sucked worse actually, you know, if it had been a 40oz.

We should sign him for 2 reasons.... 1) we need a true FS and 2) the Uggles lost one of their safeties for the season, so we need to keep him away from Phithy.

WE NEED OJ!!!!!!! ATOGWE, not that crazy mug Simpson,i like my personal belongings.

he would give us a lock down defense with our first playmaker FS since the great ST21, rip. his presence is still missed on the d. his skills allowed everyone else to play loose. hasletts new redskins d could use a ball-hawk, thoughts????
