Shanahan's coaching staff: the story so far

Let's sort out what we know and what we think about Mike Shanahan's coaching staff with the Redskins.

What we know:

Kyle Shanahan will be the offensive coordinator, and he could be in town as early as tomorrow after his wife gave birth to a baby. He won't be introduced until next week, at the earliest, and it's possible the Redskins will not hold news conferences even to introduce their most important assistants.

Jim Haslett will be the defensive coordinator. Much to discuss with him about his defensive alignments, strategy, how he might use Albert Haynesworth and Brian Orakpo, etc.

Bobby Turner will be the assistant head coach-running backs, and will have a key role in the running game. Turner's arrival was announced earlier Thursday, the first coach the team has acknowledged to be on the staff. It almost certainly means that Sherman Smith -- the team's offensive coordinator and a key component of the running game in 2008 and '09 -- will no longer be with the team.

Greg Blache is retiring from the defensive coordinator position. He said yesterday, in a brief conversation I had with him, that he'll be hunting in Texas in two weeks, then in Wisconsin after that, and there doesn't appear to be any football in his future.

Joe Bugel is also retiring. Shanahan said Wednesday that he asked Bugel to stay, but Bugel's mind was made up. You could argue that the offensive line coach is the most pivotal hire that remains given the state of the unit and its importance in Shanahan's scheme.

What we think:

Jerry Gray appears on the way out. The secondary coach under Joe Gibbs and Jim Zorn interviewed for both the head coaching job and the defensive coordinator, got neither, and now has been permitted by the Redskins to seek a job on Pete Carroll's staff in Seattle. With longtime Shanahan assistant Bob Slowik almost certain to be on staff -- and his background is coaching defensive backs -- it's getting harder to see where Gray, an All-Pro cornerback in his playing days, would fit in.

Danny Smith's position as special teams coach seems secure. Though there were rumors the Redskins would pursue former Buffalo assistant Bobby April, that is not happening. April will not interview, and NFL.com reports the Redskins have refused other teams permission to talk to Smith about interviewing elsewhere.

Former Giants assistant Mike Waufle could coach the defensive line. Several New York papers, as well as NFL.com, have reported Waufle's interview with the Redskins, and though Waufle was fired by the Giants -- whose defensive line played poorly over the second half of the season, contributing to a collapse -- he maintains a solid reputation in the game. He previously coached the Raiders' defensive line from 1998-2003, years that overlapped with Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen's time in Oakland. Another candidate mentioned by NFL.com: Tim Krumrie, the former Cincinnati Begnal defensive lineman who was a longtime Cincinnati assistant. He spent 2009 with Kansas City, but was fired last week.

Tampa Bay assistant Richard Mann could be the next receivers coach. The St. Petersburg Times reports that Mann's interview is taking place Thursday. Mann has been with the Buccaneers for eight seasons, holds the title of assistant head coach-wide receivers and is a favorite of wideout Antonio Bryant. His years in Tampa also coincide with Allen's time there, and he spent the 2001 season with the Redskins, when Michael Westbrook and Rod Gardner were the primary targets.

Lou Spanos, who helped coach linebackers under Haslett with the Steelers, will have a role coaching linebackers. The Steelers granted Spanos, who spent 16 years in Pittsburgh, permission to interview with the Redskins, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said he would leave for Washington, as did ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Steelers declined to confirm that Thursday. The interesting fall-out: Will linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti, the longest-tenured member of the Redskins staff, remain with the team?

Defensive line coach John Palermo and receivers coach Stan Hixon, the other holdovers from Zorn's staff, could be left out in the transition.

Questions that remain:

Who will coach the offensive line? The two most likely candidates, former Shanahan assistants Alex Gibbs and Rick Dennison, have already gone elsewhere, Gibbs to the Seahawks and Dennison to be the offensive line coach in Houston (where he takes over Kyle Shanahan's spot).

Will Chris Meidt have a spot? The offensive assistant hired by Zorn straight from Div. III St. Olaf College worked closely with Jason Campbell and the quarterbacks and was given credit by staff members for helping to make the bizarre play-calling structure --involving Sherman Lewis, Sherman Smith and Campbell -- work. Meidt said Wednesday he's still hopeful of being on staff, and spoke in glowing terms about Shanahan.

Will Steve Jackson have a spot? The safeties coach spent six years with the Redskins, and it's possible he could have a role even if/when Slowick comes on board.

Will tight ends coach Scott Wachenheim have a spot? He has only one year of NFL experience - 2009, coaching the Redskins' tight ends - and the Shanahans would have to become comfortable with him quickly. Tight end could be a key position in Shanahan's offense, and the Redskins appear to have two good ones in Pro Bowler Chris Cooley, who will be coming off a season-ending ankle injury, and Fred Davis, who came on after Cooley's season was ended by injury.

zcezcest, Leinart's snaps to date have not been after a week, much less a preseason, of practicing with starting receivers.

Posted by: dcsween

He started 2 games, both losses, knew he'd be starting both. Stats-wise, his best game was vs StL, when he came in relief.

I don't know how AZ sees Linehart. Clearly, they play Warner as long as Warner wants to play. But he's 38, so AZ has to be thinking about who they want throwing it to Fitz and Breaston if Kurt decides he's ready to call it a career. If they're happy with Linehart, they won't want Campbell. But Linehart is still mystery meat. Campbell isn't.

Throwing to Fitz, Breaston and Cooley behind the AZ OL, Campbell is probably a 90+ rated QB.

This probably doesn't mean anything to anyone here, but since I've been around a long time and pride myself on not making ridiculous claims (other than that Leigh Torrence are the 2nd and 3rd comings of Jesus Christ himself, respectively), I want to say that I REALLY like the signing of the center Lichtensteiger.

I have family that goes to Bowling Green and there's a shot I could be teaching there next year so I've followed their football team since like 2004 and I remember this guy. I remember hoping that the Skins would draft him. No lie.

Dude is a beast and never missed a snap if I recall while in college. He anchored a BGSU line that set conference and school records in passing and running while he was there and was unquestionably their biggest strength on the line. I think under the right coaching scheme and some more bulking up he could be a very good center prospect to continue developing. Say what you will about his stats on paper, but this is a good move and one that I'm personally excited about having had an eye on him from a while back. Hopefully my 2 cents can back a few more skeptics be excited too!

and Bean, as for Yoder being a backup. I got no issue with that.

I know a lot of people think Shanahan will want Cooley and Davis on the field together a lot. I have my doubts on that, neither is much of a blocker.

If you're Shanahan, would you rather have a set as follows:

a) Campbell, Santana, Cooley, Davis, D Thomas

or

b) Linehart, Boldin, Santana, D Thomas, Davis

Eagles nab Bobby April
Posted by Mike Florio on January 14, 2010 3:47 PM ET
As former Bills special teams coordinator Bobby April was being pursued by the likes of the Steelers and the Redskins, another candidate for his services was gliding under radar.

And that candidate landed his services.

The Eagles have announced that April has been hired to take over Philly's special teams. He replaces special teams coordinator Ted Daisher.

The fact that the Eagles didn't fire Daisher until they had the newest bird in the hand allowed them to chase April discreetly.

The Eagles also have terminated the contracts of strength and conditioning coach Mike Wolf and assistant strength and conditioning coach Jay Merlino.

I saw that he's interviewing to be DC in Seattle but that he still wants to stay here in whatever capacity. The Skins site says he has two sons. Assuming they're school age kids, then given how infrequently a coach sees his family, I imagine it would be tough to uproot them and move them across country so you can not seem them that often there either.

What the Redskins need is a safeties coach who:

1. Understands the binary language of moisture vaporators.

2. Will school Laron Landry in the art of proper tackling and playing under control, and who will keep him honest about it on a moment-by-moment basis.

But mostly the second one.

fwiw, its not a trade I'd make because I think Campbell is a good QB and Linehart is a mystery.

The time to get Boldin was 2 years ago. He's a terrific WR, but he'll be pricey and he turns 30 in October.

But its what Shanahan thinks about JC and what AZ thinks about Linehart. I don't know what either party is thinking. But I'm pretty sure both teams are thinking a lot about their QB situations

If I had a scud missile between my legs, I would be ashamed. Most of the scuds blew up on the launching pad. The few that actually "got up" had weak guidance systems and exploded harmlessly, well short of the intended target. Hope that hasn't been your experience, Red.

Posted by: League-Source | January 14, 2010 4:05 PM | Report abuse

I think Lisa's comments weren't THAT bad....more of pointing to the facts...The Redskins Staff has had a real good mix of all types of people.....

....If I were Lisa, I would have just waited to the laid out the whole staff...

..But maybe...Just maybe the players were taking advantage of the position coaches because of their skin color...People do that in jobs...Well, I can say Black People atleaset do this...

(And Please don't confuse this observation with any others floating around)

You can't suspend someone based on an allegation.

Sween,
No, you weren't mistaken. Around the same time as those guys another slash guy named Omar (Something)-- I can't remember-- was drafted by the Steelers with the hopes that they could mold him into ARE after he left. That guy was fleet-footed and similar to ARE having played college QB, but I think he got hurt and ended up going to the CFL eventually. But yeah-- he set all those records behind Lichtensteiger and I remember him crediting a lot of his success to him specifically by name, for what it's worth.

Tell me about it, I needed an 8 inch dicketomy just to get the tuck right.

On Danny Smith, other than ARE (who I never thought took his PR role seriously once he got elevated to #2 WR ... a job he never had in Pittsburgh ... and was part of the "fail" group brought in with BLloyd and Archuleta) and his stoopid loyalty to Frost, I always thought Skins were solid on change of possession, usually at something like +15 over the course of the game (a couple few years ago, I used to watch that). I think he's been a good coach of the OTHER ten guys on special teams plays. Besides, seems like Shanahan has focused more on hiring older, been-around-the-league* coaches (and his son) more than anything, so Danny Smith fits the mold.

From the Skins blog (Terl) who found stuff off a Broncos blog about Lichtensteiger after he got cut by Denver and picked up by Minnesota:

"Needless to say, I love Lichtensteiger. He was second only to Jake Long in terms of his nasty streak in that draft, he's a beast in the run game, has good lateral quickness and is built with a low center of gravity and tremendous power. His knocks coming out of the draft were short arms and he looks awkward and clumsy in space. All you need to know is that his career blocking success rating was over 85% in college. Jake Long's was 82%. Kory was easily my favorite center in his class. He was and still is criminally underrated in my opinion and he will serve the Vikings well if he's needed. He can play center and guard equally well."

My hunch is that the new center (short armed though he may be) has entered the building.

Matt McGuire's NFL Draft blog..

Tebow's game can't be broken down any more than it already has been, and in my opinion, he has absolutely no chance to make it as a quarterback in the NFL.

However, NFL teams don't really care what I think unless Colts general manager Bill Polian is a frequent visitor of WalterFootball.com (and I'm leaning slightly that he isn't) since even Polian doesn't think Tebow is a pro quarterback.

This blog is about Tebow's recent decision to play in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, making it one of the most popular Senior Bowl weeks in this past decade.

I searched "Tim Tebow" and "Senior Bowl" in the News section on Google, and it's amazing how many Web outlets reported it. He is the hot topic and all the cameras will be on him.

Tim Tebow: Say goodbye to any chance you had of being a first-round draft pick.

Everything Tebow can be knocked for will be on display in Mobile. His biggest drawback will be his poor passing mechanics, and his inaccuracy will be on display. He won't be throwing to wide open receivers in drills, and just like Pat White last year, I anticipate him overthrowing a lot of receivers.

His footwork will be greatly exposed. Teams will nitpick his release just like they did with Andre' Woodson. He has no experience taking snaps under center.

I projected Tebow to play in Mobile because deep down I believed Tebow is a great competitor who will want to prove everybody wrong, but from an NFL Draft decision standpoint, it is a very poor one.

I think Tebow will be drafted in the second round, and if he does go through with playing in Mobile, I'm just not confident at all that he will be drafted at any point in the first round despite the hype.

If you're Shanahan, would you rather have a set as follows:

a) Campbell, Santana, Cooley, Davis, D Thomas

or

b) Linehart, Boldin, Santana, D Thomas, Davis

Id take JC in a second over Leinart. All of the weapons and a good O line at his disposal, and he still can't get it done? Put JC on the Cardinals, and see what he does.
