Skins Call Off Today's OTA

The Redskins have canceled today's organized team activity. Instead, the team says there'll be "a private activity away from Redskins Park." There'll be no media access today, so we won't know whether they decided to see "Up" or "The Hangover."

Meanhaps, you're going to want to follow up on this quote from Jim Zorn (who also confesses to Dan Steinberg that he has given up any idea of playing in the NFL again):

"Yeah, I drove back from Boston through New York in my daughter's Jeep," he said. "The top was up, but I had headphones on the whole time. You know, sort of soundproof headphones, because it is a soft top. So illegally I wore headphones, both my son and I had these orange headsets on, just to break up the noise a little bit. We rode the whole way, you know, we did the whole thing. It was awesome. My daughter graduated from college up there and she had a car there, a Jeep, and I told her I'd drive it home for her. It was so much fun. It would only go about 50 miles an hour, so I didn't have to worry about the speed limit."

Lottery ticket unveiled

"Redskins Mania," the teams partnership with the Virginia Lottery, was officially introduced Monday and is expected to donate $8 million to the states public schools.

"Next to Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall, this may be the most important investment the team makes this off-season," Redskins COO Mitch Gershman said.

With a $20 ticket, cash prizes range from $20 to $1 million, and second-chance drawings will be held for chances to win Redskins-related prizes, such as season tickets for 20 years. The scratch-off tickets go on sale in early August.

Several NFL teams are taking advantage of the new league rule allowing business with state lotteries. As part of the agreement, the Redskins will be paid for the use of their logo on the card but will not receive a percentage of the profit.

20 dollars for scratch offs?

Nope, I'm good. I'll keep frequenting the local 7-Eleven knock offs then.

Oh yeah, heard the "DOA" by Jay... I vouch. Besides going on the autotune, tight jeans, and what not - he also says "This is the death of the ringtone".

Yes sir, I couldn't agree more. Nothing more silly than hearing ringtones on a grown man's phone. Ringtones is for kids like my 14 year old niece.

And Jay-Z is still a beast.

Again, F Jay-Z.

Dang, CL.

Hate much, homie?

"Money obsessed"? That right there is a little boy way of thinking. When is having too much money a bad thing. Sh*t, I'm money hungry myself. I'd rather chase money than women.

Really can't speak on the personal re: Jay-Z, but from his songs you get the impression that his dad wasn't around much. So I think becasue his dad was a Giants fan, he didn't get along with him, could've been what made him a Giants fan.

Like most of my Uncles, they all like the Cowboys becasue my grandparents were 'skin fans - my generation? We mostly rep the 'skins.

See how that backwards-ass stuff works?

And agree to disagree on the ringtones. At least you make yours - one of my dawgs lost mad cool points when I heard the Soulja Boy "Kiss Me Through the Phone" joint. He claimed that that ring was for one of his shortys (lady friend) - there wasn't any excuses for a grown ass man to have any Soulja Boy ringtone -- maybe the beginning of the Superman track a few years back -- or any downloaded ringtoone for that matter.

mp3's on your phone? Yea, all day. Ringtones? Nay.

When a trial date gets pushed back, what does that generally mean?

That the prosecution is trying to gather more evidence?

I hope not, it's been about a year and a half now. I'm starting to think that if the prosecution doesn't have enough evidence to support their recommended sentence by now, they may never...

They got to get 'em. I'm not saying kill 'em, but they at least got to do life without any possibility of parole.

Ask Don Fanucci how gangster is Vito Corleone, or Don Ciccio for that matter. How many times did Fanucci just overlooked him?

iH8dallas - I wouldn't put it like that, but yeah, I agree over all, save for cop killing and Rappers weren't talking about a specific 'white man', but stating it was a 'white man's world'. Rapping about money has killed the artform because the rap use to be about how to get money and being hungry. Now they are rapping how they have money, but never talk about how they got it. Which means there are mostly ohonies in the game. Everyone's 1st (and sometimes 2nd) albums were the rawest of the raw and the realist, because they didn't have any real money yet.

Tom Brady Fell Out Of A Boat
Posted by Josh Alper on June 9, 2009, 12:12 p.m.
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady fell out of a kayak into the Charles River over the weekend, according to the Boston Herald.

A spokesman for Community Boating confirmed that Brady and his wife Gisele Bundchen rented kayaks on Sunday, but the Herald relied on other sources for the details of the story.

“He had to be rescued,” said their spy. “The launch guy went out and got him and got him back in the kayak. He’s been bragging about it ever since. He’s telling everyone he rescued Tom Brady.”

The spy added that it looked like everyone was having fun and that the situation was more embarrassing than dangerous.

I don't believe this.

I don't have any bonus points (are those still in circulation?), but I would like to send you mad cool points for your acknowledgment of al-qaeda-Jada.

Jada is such a beast on the mic, and you're 1000% right, he doesn't get nearly enough credit for his rhyming ability.

He's better than any rapper out right now.

Kiss The Game Goodbye? Classic dope.
Kiss of Death? Classic Dope

The first two songs that come to mind are "Feel Me" (Kiss The Game Goodbye) and "Still Feel Me" (Kiss of Death)

The Last Kiss? 'bout to be classic dope.

4th, Jay hasn't been relevant? Can I have some of that purp you're blazin', homie? I'm going to only crack that can - A Jay vs. Nas debate can tire you out.

I'll just say this about Jay-Z: No offense to my white buds, but when White America notices you for 1) not being shot, 2) for not dying, or 3) not having your name in negatvity, it says alot.

And before you say that applies to MC Hammer and Nelly, Jay never lost his "street cred" he wasn't known for any gimmicks or acts like a lot of these rappers now.

And as far as the disses go between Nas and Jay, while I liked Ether -- a whole lot -- Nas had his feelings hurt bad on the "Superugly" diss by Jay:

"Me and tha boy A.I.* got more in Common than just ballin and rhymin
Get It?
More in COMMON
I came in ya Bentley backseat
skeeted in Jeep
left condoms in tha baby seat
Here ni**a
tha gloves is off
the love is done
its whateva, wheneva, howeva
ni**a "1"

Jay-Z got personal. Jay's moms told him he took it to far. Nas fell back... wanna know why that rhyme was so cold? Becasue it was the truth. Truth always prevails.

Always.

Ochocinco: Me And Carson Are Like “Brokeback Mountain”
Posted by Josh Alper on June 9, 2009, 10:39 a.m.
Throughout the offseason Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer made several comments indicating his displeasure with wide receiver Chad Ochocinco. While he had nicer things to say at the end of May, the relationship between the two players was something to watch as training camp and the season unfolded.

There’s nothing to worry about, according to Ochocinco. He and Palmer are as close as a couple of cowboys riding out a cold night in the mountains.

“I know people are trying to say we’re mad at each other and all that, but we’re good,” he told Bengals.com. “We’re like Brokeback Mountain. I’m going to be with Carson so much in July that I’m going to be the nanny [for his new twins].”

decent song, sure, but overrated

sorry but a buncha gay jokes doesn't = a good diss track. "You got DSL", seriously Nas? The same rapper that everyone says is some intellectual poet pulling out nothing but gay jokes = mad lame.

Jay-Z on Takeover > everybody

and you wanna talk about whose career went where after Ether/Takeover? Really? Really?

Look I bump Nas all day, Illmatic is a classic, but Nas has fallen off almost as bad as Eminem through the years, not to mention his hypocritical lyrics. Hip hop is dead? You're tired of the same cliches in rap music? Yet this is the same guy that married Kelis, also known as the female rapper who put out songs such as "I'm Bossy" and "My Neck, My Back"? Come on now...weak.

Jay-Z on the other hand, will spell it out to you from the get-go. Never pretends to be something he isn't.

And continuing on the Nas Vs. Jay-Z, well, only one of them calls the other boss....

Posted by: TheTruth11 | June 9, 2009 12:44 PM | Report abuse

Y'know the one thing about rap that bothers me now?

Tonality.

Rap was the first popular medium that escaped traditional western harmony. There are traks from the 70's & 80's that basically didn't give a SJK about it. It progressed music by ignoring the status quo of a thousand years of conformity. And became wildly popular doing to. Like Jazz did before it.

Ornette Coleman (and others) made HUGE strides in modern composition through jazz, but it was Rap that brought popular music out of the classical period.

Now in less than two decades, producers have reigned in the dissidence and decided to take the bigger $$ over their true message of dissent.

Maybe something can be said for bringing some counter-culture or sub-culture messages to greater masses, but I'm not sure if it's just advertising media's co-option of the medium.

If that's true, which I'm sorry to say seems likely so. Then the medium is really dead as a creative art and is just a tool to sell.. computers, clothing, what have you...

I'm certainly open to debate on this, but you have to consider that state in any discussion of who's more relevant.

rok Rok AUN!

It doesn't get anymore 1-dimensional than Jada.

Everytime someone claims he is one of the best, I just laugh. No point in arguing; I'll let his record sales and lack of across the globe success speak for itself.

He does have an incredible flow and that is the only thing that has kept him afloat.

As for his lyrics, well rappers like him are a dime a dozen.

yeah, chrislarry, you also claim Jay-Z should like the Giants because his dad was a Giants fan.

I won't even ask how you "know" his dad was a Giants fan, because based on what Jay-Z has said, Jay himself probably didn't/doesn't know that.

"Jay-z , Lil Wayne,.....etc the list goes on and on. They are the reason hip hop sucks today. Is it just me or was it much better when rap was about drive by shootings, cop killing and hatred for white people? Rapping about money has killed the artform that is hip hop. It's time someone without commercial interests dropped something with some substance.

BTW why doesn't Jadakiss get enough credit

Posted by: iH8dallas"

you should listen to more Jay-Z...seriously.

Even listen to his last song, he basically says "How come I'm 40 years old but I'm still the most gangsta in the game? That's just wrong."

and THAT...is gangsta

Landry did call, but the cell phone line was fuzzy and he didn't hear it well.

Zorn explained "The team is going bowl(scritch scratch)ing"

Landry: "What's that you said, Coach?"

Zorn: "You know, big hard balls?"

Landry: "No can do, coach, not going to do that again. Had to miss time in camp last time because of that."

Posted by: dcsween | June 9, 2009 1:09 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, but can you really define any of this stuff as "music"? Especially if you deconstruct the way Truth discusses the lyrics - it sounds like he's taking about poetry - which is all good...and while I like the comparison of Rap/Hip Hop to Jazz, at the same time, you can't really put even the best of this stuff up against some of the best music over time and say - "yeah, this compares as great music"

It's an art form, sure, but is it music?

Would people listen to the words without the beat? And the beat don't make make it great music.

I consider myself among the blog elite on subject of falling out of kayaks. I've fallen out on the Cache Creek, Rio Azul, Rio Espolon, Salmon (Idaho) and the American River (S. Fork). Which is pretty much the same list of rivers I've kayaked.

My Favorite thing about Rap Music is when the Rappers make fun of their own fans:

"I'm a hustler homey, you just a customer crony" (forgive me if it's not word for word)

-Jay Z

I hear ya, John D. As I was trying to point out - the debates here are about the libretto & don't really focus on the audio much at all.

I realize JZ tried to bring that up w/ DoA a bit. But in doing so, he executes the same old tertian western harmony.

Rapping is not about record sales. just because someone has the hottest ringtone at any given time DOES NOT MAKE THEM HOT.Stanky leg is much more radio friendly than some of the old mixtapes I listen to. Hip hop is about how well you use words. I swear if I hear one more of any of the following I will regurgitate.
"Roof on the Coupe"
"Money stay long"
"Anything that rhymes with private jet"
"Cavalli shades"
"What girls do in da club"
"Don P"
"Or being da Boss"

It doesn't get anymore 1-dimensional than Jada.

Everytime someone claims he is one of the best, I just laugh. No point in arguing; I'll let his record sales and lack of across the globe success speak for itself.

He does have an incredible flow and that is the only thing that has kept him afloat.

As for his lyrics, well rappers like him are a dime a dozen.

Posted by: Vicc | June 9, 2009 12:50 PM

Vicc, you gotta be bs'n me homie.

Album sales?

All due respect, get that weak azz s**t outta here. Album sales? For real, you wanna go there?

Aight, coo... here goes, becasue according to your criteria for being a good rapper one must punish sound scan ratings:

So that includes the likes of Nelly, MC Hammer, 50 Cent, and Eminem.

None of those dudes are better than Jada. Not one.

You must be either a Beanie Sigel or 50 Cent fan. What's good?

Posted by: RedDMV | June 9, 2009 1:38 PM | Report abuse

D. Hall on Madden lowering his rating 25 points on SI.com today:

"disappointed in the [rating] system" and "thinking about trying to get my name and likeness pulled off the game," but assures us it's a "good thing I don't play the game for Madden ratings."

Guess the Madden people didn't think he was worth that huge contract. Hope they're wrong!

But you're missing the point of how someone with no set of "contributary-to-society" type of skills can still pick up women...cuz I'll be honest:

I'd be happy if there were no monetary substance on the face of the earth, but there were women.

I'd be uphappy if there were no females on the face of the earth, but I had all the money in the world.

"With a $20 ticket, cash prizes range from $20 to $1 million, and second-chance drawings will be held for chances to win Redskins-related prizes, such as season tickets for 20 years. The scratch-off tickets go on sale in early August.

Several NFL teams are taking advantage of the new league rule allowing business with state lotteries. As part of the agreement, the Redskins will be paid for the use of their logo on the card but will not receive a percentage of the profit."--Wash Times

ASK PETE

Hate to interrupt this Rap dialogue, but someone from the Post should lob a call to Pete Rose for his opinion on the league sanctioning the Redskins crawling into bed with, excuse me, signing a partnership with a gambling enterprise.

Love to know if he's offended by a sports franchise pimping out, excuse me agaibn, leasing their logo to an organization whose goal is to encourage people to gamble.

I'm also curious, and maybe someone should ask a Redskins spokesman, like Cereato, or Larry Michael, if they plan to put the Lottery logo on the uni any time soon.

Just kidding. Those kind of questions might offend someone at redskin Park

Also, I'm no trial lawyer but:..

I'd love to be the attorney representing anyone injured in a car accident with a Redskins in the near future. If anything even resembling inattention is involved on the Redskin's part, look out.

You KNOW they will be going after Dan Snyder's deep pockets claiming that one of his employees, with great influence over his young charges, set a criminally bad example for them.

Don't tell me I'm a crusty old get-off-my-lawn fard, I already know that, but I'm just saying this is what could well happen.

It's not as if a player the Redskin currently have was ever involved in a car accident and may be involved in civil liability.

Vicc, I'll give you the fact that consistency isn't Jada's watchword -- how did he balance his lack of Albums? By burning up the mixtape circuit. D-Block lives(d) on mixtapes. It's where you can find most quality music if you're a hip-hop fan.

But just becasue an artist doesn't drop albums on the regular, or their album sales aren't off the charts doesn't diminish who they are.

Maybe the whole team is flying down to show up on Laron Landry's doorstep and beg him to come practice, or haze him or something. Or, maybe the team just came to the conclusion that since Landry wasn't going to practice, they weren't going to practice either.

Seriously though, the teams have only so many days to prepare for next season. Each one of these OTA days is a chance for the coaches to teach, teach, teach. How can the team afford to give up one?

For one: I hope you weren't talking about me, becasue... well s**t, I'll just say let's not go there -- not today. I'm in a great mood.

And save that "class" talk in hip-hop. These dudes aren't politicans and they don't go to state dinners. When it is openly accepted that artist curse in their rhymes, class doesn't even factor in anymore.

Maybe you were thinking along the lines of respect and humility, well wait... those aren't hip-hop's strong suits either.
