Skins Cling to the Lead

Well, I'm an idiot. So much for ball control, bleeding the clock, putting up one more TD.

Portis' fumble was the second big turning point of the game - aside from the Martz brain cramp - and now we've got a ballgame. Skins have looked poor stopping the run and the offense is as clausterphobic as ever, with no downfield dimension and DBs jumping sideline passes to Moss, having a bead on the ball and threatening to take it to the house.

Skins have not posted consecutive nine-win season since 1991-1992. Will they manage to break the streak?

Fifteen minutes of football to go. Hold on to your seat cushions.

PS - Anyone still beleive Jerry Jones that Wade Phillips will be back? Not me.

If the niners score, how in the world will the Redskins? Portis ain't got nothin.

Moss must be hoping for a higher draft pick too.

Did anyone see Taylor on that play? Back to his old self.

Good thing this is the last game of the year, not sure how much I can take of this offense anymore.

Do NOT challenge

Posted by: columbiard | December 28, 2008 6:36 PM | Report abuse

90-95% of this team is not worth a fifth rounder if you were to trade it.

TD, SF...now we must rely on the offense, ugh

Posted by: mohammed10 | December 28, 2008 6:37 PM | Report abuse

I have the Dallas game.

Is Moss wide open and dropping balls, or double-covered and dropping balls?

It makes a difference if you have two guys head-hunting you the whole game.

Maybe JC is not putting it in the bread basket either.

Posted by: swowra | December 28, 2008 6:43 PM | Report abuse

Look ma, a deep pass.

Posted by: ga8085 | December 28, 2008 6:44 PM | Report abuse

Okay, think I am done with OUR game for the day. I would rather watch Dallas lose.

I hate the last day of the regular season when we don't make the playoffs - too sad.

But Dallas ain't going to the playoffs either! :)

This offense sucks as usual, same BS every week.

JC is unable to throw the ball down the field, either because he does not have enough time or when he does have time he is to scared to make a mistake.

But sorry a$$ Sean Hill can throw down the field to his sorry a$$ receivers.

Posted by: smittdiddy | December 28, 2008 6:53 PM | Report abuse

Look for the Redskins to find a way to f!ck up this drive.

Posted by: jiacinto | December 28, 2008 6:54 PM | Report abuse

Will we ever just try to thread a deep one? Campbell seems to just give up on the throws. He either over throws the guy or checks it down or gets sacked. He has lots of growing to do.

BTW, at least he slide feet first this time :-)

Posted by: JoeyV3 | December 28, 2008 6:54 PM | Report abuse

there is zorn in JCs head "proper way to slide"....

to bad winning games wasnt based on dodging pads or sitting under z-shades....

wow, so after 16 games, we know absolutely nothing about the future of this franchise....

Posted by: swowra | December 28, 2008 7:11 PM | Report abuse

Well, what a season! I wish we made the playoffs, but someone asked me if I thought we would go 7-9 and I couldn't agree that we'd win that many games, so I should be happy with 8-8.

The nice thing is that Dallas, the pre-determined Super Bowl champs will be doing the same thing us 8-8 Skins are doing next weekend.

Posted by: suzannepdc | December 28, 2008 7:11 PM | Report abuse

Lots of work needed on the offense in the offseason. The playbook needs to be expanded Hail

Posted by: TWISI | December 28, 2008 7:11 PM | Report abuse

This team needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, the offense is terrible and the defense could'nt sack my daughter.

I'm glad we did not give the rookies a chance to play today we may have lost oh wait thats right we did the same BS we do everyweek and lost anyway.

Posted by: Flounder21 | December 28, 2008 7:12 PM | Report abuse

More bad coaching by Zorn. Fourth and Goal and he calls timeout too early. They could have run another 30 or so seconds. The difference in OT and losing in regulation. Lots of bad playcalling. Horribly designed plays. He better learn a lot this offseason.

Fire Snyder.

Posted by: chrislarry | December 28, 2008 7:13 PM | Report abuse

The only silver lining is that we aren't the Detroit Lions, who went 0-16. Still, though, I wish that we were the Detroit Lions. There would have been no expectations. I wonder what their blog was like today.

Posted by: gregskins | December 28, 2008 7:16 PM | Report abuse

CL,

Agreed this team is just not good, scrap it and rebuild it, I can take losing for a few more years as long as we are rebuilding with youth.

We lose every year anyway so what would be the difference.

Posted by: Flounder21 | December 28, 2008 7:16 PM | Report abuse

"You had a bad day,
You had a bad day,

Your team is mediocre and they threw it away,

you had a bad day."

Posted by: swowra | December 28, 2008 7:16 PM | Report abuse

His first year coaching, Joe Gibbs went 8-8.

Zorn, his first year as a head coach, went 8-8.

There the similarities end.

That was a completely different 8-8 then this one (in more ways than the fact that Gibbs started out 0-5).

This team needs more than just some new tires.

Posted by: SteveMG | December 28, 2008 7:18 PM | Report abuse

sorry for double negative...should read "not all 8-8 records are created equal"

Posted by: chrislarry | December 28, 2008 7:19 PM | Report abuse

Can't help but note the irony in JC gutting out a td....and then having the Defense blow it for us.

Oh well better draft picks and weaker schedule.

Posted by: CindyBoren | December 28, 2008 7:21 PM | Report abuse

We do suck but still if we had beaten the Rams and Bengals we'd be in the playoffs. Philly and Arizona don't belong there either. If Zorn is unwilling to change and open it up, they can fire him. I'd rather watch Gibbs boring offense anyday over dink and dunk. We could bring Brunell back if thats what we are gonna do.

Posted by: Posse81_83_84 | December 28, 2008 7:23 PM | Report abuse

I vacillate between starting over and tweaking around the edges. This team didn't go 1-15 or 4-12. In many of the games, in almost all of the losses, the Redskins had plenty of chances to win. What seems to have done in the Redskins was stupid penalties, turnovers, dropped balls, interceptions, blown coverages, and poor special teams.

I would be more in the "starting over" camp if the team lost all of the games by landslide margins. If the losses were all 28-0, 35-7, 42-10, and so forth, I'd be all for starting over. But the final record of 8-8 is just unacceptable, given how the team started.

Positions that I would immediately replace:

FG Kicker. I would immediately fire Suisham. He missed too many FG's during the season. His performance was mediocre.

John Jansen. I would not invite him back and replace his position. Furthermore I'd focus aggressively on improving the offensive and defensive lines. The Redskins are in dire need of a strong offensive line.

I would also draft a successor to Clinton Portis. He's not getting any younger; and, while he is still good, it's time to also groom a successor for when Portis's career finally ends.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
