Skins Likely to Sign Alexander, Punter Today

Shaun Alexander's workout went well and the Redskins will offer him a one-year, veteran minimum contact, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

The former Seattle Seahawks running back is still in town and the Redskins have yet to submit a contract to his agent, according to sources, but Washington intends to sign him and barring an increased salary demand, which seems unlikely given how long Alexander has been unsigned, the deal should be announced by 4 p.m. today.

The Redskins are still deliberating on whom to release to make room for Alexander, but team sources indicated safety Justin Hamilton is likely to be the player let go.

Alexander, a former MVP who has been slowed by injuries in recent years, was passed over by other teams during the offseason and preseason, but has strong ties to Coach Jim Zorn and running backs coach Stump Mitchell. With back-up tailback Ladell Betts likely out a month with hamstring and knee strains (and a minimum of two weeks), the Redskins wanted to improve their depth at the position.

The Redskins mulled other options at running back, including signing former Redskin Marcus Mason from Baltimore's practice squad, but Alexander has been an elite runner and the team was satisfied with his conditioning and ability to contribute after a long layoff. Alexander did not participate in any club's training camp after being released by Seattle following last season.

Washington did not bring in any other running backs for visits; four punters and a free-agent long snapper to help deliver balls to the punters during their competition were brought in.

The Redskins worked out four punters today, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, including Josh Miller, Ryan Plackemeier, and Waylon Prather and sent Miller and Plackemeier for physicals.

The Skins will sign one of those veterans today, with a decision expected around 4 p.m. and that punter will get a roster spot vacated by Durant Brooks.

Brooks will either be waived, placed the injured-reserve list or reach an injury settlement, according to sources. MIller is the more experienced punter; Plackemeier has ties to the staff from his time punting in Seattle.

"Know something, boy? You're a funny dude for real. Let me get this straight: you're trying to speak logically about the roster, when not more than a couple of post ago you posted: "I don't want EITHER on the team. I want Rock to be 2nd string while Betts is hurt.

Posted by: TheTruth11 | October 14, 2008 1:19 PM"

Dude, we have to get one or the other. Do you think it's smart to carry only two RB's on the team? Herein lies the stupidity of that post.

All of this coming from someone who thinks Brooks' punting woes are attributed to the venue he played in at college.

You're a bama to the fullest.

Posted by: RedDMV | October 14, 2008 2:07 PM"

lol

1) Don't know/care what a "bama" is. Sounds lame.

2) I almost literally lol'd at "Know something, boy?". I now look at you as some honky redneck.

3) I wasn't aware our only two options were Marcus Mason or Shaun Alexander. There isn't ONE other running back available? Wow, that's interesting.

Keep up the great work, boy!

miller can hold for the kicker, i'm not sure about plackemeier! this is huge, don't kid yourself.

Well what's done is done, let's hope Alexander isn't TJ Duckett 2.0.

Plackemeier!...

At least that'll sound good when we're swearing at the TV... Niedermeier... eh... I mean.. Plackemeier!!!!!

So when stud UGA punter Brian Nimbs blew up the Tide with his bad azz 30.2 yard punting avg. during UGA's game against bama he immediately climbed to the top of the 2009 draft class?

Truth...wow, you just got DESTROYED in the previous post. But like you said, you never bring up UGA stuff....lol...take that weak azz shti outta here...

Truth while you were never really that great there was a time when you were bearable. I suggest you either find that place again or go back to speaking in the third person. Why are you so bitter?

The Truth is, I actually really liked the GTech/UGa joke.. Keep the ACC humor comin'! hehehe.

Posted by: DikShuttle | October 14, 2008 2:31 PM | Report abuse

Let's all wave to Brooks with one finger...

That said, I haven't got a warm fuzzy about the upcoming game. The 'Skins played their best when they thought everyone was dissing them. Once they got to be a favorite and a media darling, they basically spent Sunday polishing a turd (Clinton Portis exempt from all criticism here; he's a stud).

Can they get it back together against a team who suddenly found themselves, even if it was only for a night? Can they put 30+ points on the board and hold the Brownies to under 17? Can they put pressure on the QB? Can they radically improve their punting game? Obviously, they can't do all that in one week. But can they do enough of them to win? I'm seeing 4-3 here. It smells like a downward spiral...

My stab at ACC humor:

Well, we could take Maryland's punter - but Ralph Freidgen ATE him!!!

see it's not really a joke though. Georgia Tech offered fans a free hotdog and a free Coke at each game with the purchase of season tickets. They did this in an effort to help sell tickets. Meanwhile, it is quite difficult for UGA fans to even find tickets and fans had to pay over 10,000 for the right to purchase tickets.

I'm sorry a simple joke hurt so many feelings. Wow.

Too bad, but Brooks had to go. He did have some good games and some good punts, but there is too little margin for error in this league to be patient with his inconsistency. It wasn't the play that cost us the game, but his 26 yard shank led to a FG against the Rams, and we end up losing by 2....

Posted by: mrizzle | October 14, 2008 2:35 PM | Report abuse

Oh - and can I PUHLEEEZE have some cred. visa vis the HOMEFIELD ADVANTAGE here??

All I heard last week was how great our home stadium was and that it's so hard to play there...

Well, when we were up - it wasn't that loud.. and when we were down you could hear a f'n pin drop.

So I want some crow eatin' ... now! You know I'd do it if the reverse was true. I have before. (Todd Col).

As far as the upcoming game, I think that Raback better bring his A-game, Shaun Rogers is a load in the middle of that line. That being said, I think that Portis can find yards on this team. The Redskins HAVE to find a way to get Moss the ball. 2 catches in the last 2 games, isn't nearly enough.

Nice part about Alexander is that he only lost 17 fumbles in 2,176 attempts. That's about a 1% lost fumble rate. Hope he hasn't lost that touch...

Understood. Unfortunately, I'm surrounded by Georgia Tech peeps from our engineering dept. so I gotta look out for their interests as I need help fixing this computer thingy when smacking it is ineffective.

Brooks is young. I hope he goes on IR and can come back next year after some Zen training from Zorn.

We have depth at running back already. If we were serious about dominating, our running game would be reshuffled as follows:
1) Primary back would be Mike Sellers.
2) Portis, who is fast and can block, would be the third-down back.
3) Cartwright can fill in for both.
4) Mike Sellers should be retuning punts.

Alexander could do something, maybe the placeholder. This would add a threat in our special teams -- will the holder "hold it", or run? Who knows. Keep them honest.

Posted by: MarkAction | October 14, 2008 2:55 PM | Report abuse

Shaun Alexander??? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

and as for getting Moss the ball more, he had 4 dropped balls on Sunday, so he could have had 6 receptions.

This is just like the bad ol' days with Mark Brunnell in 2005 where teams would double and triple Moss because they knew we didn't have another receiver. And here we are 3 Freakin' years later and we STILL don't have a decent #2 receiver for JC to go to.

Posted by: TS_Alfabet | October 14, 2008 3:00 PM | Report abuse

We had to know Zorn couldn't go all year with Gibbs' old team. This is the beginning of assembling "his" team. Something tells me this is the beginning of yet another rebuilding year.

people stop being negative. On another note, the cowgirls just traded for roy williams from the lions. I really don't like that.

Wow boy's get williams we get alexander.

Posted by: dakel76 | October 14, 2008 6:20 PM | Report abuse

Alexander, though slowed by various injuries, has had a serious amount of time to let minor nagging injuries heal. He apparently passed the physical. And considering Portis is the primary back, Alexander will have the same limited role as Betts. This plays in Alexanders favor, not to mention his step in ability with an offense he is more than familiar with, also to his benefit.. I don't have a problem with this at all.. it also saves Rock for his duties as the Kick Returner.

The Punter... its about time... this Brooks is a train wreck... wasted draft pick... glad they are cutting this clown lose..

But one should also ask the question...

Suisham... what has happened to him??? 1st 4 games he was putting it in the endzone.. now he is hardly reaching the 10 yrd line.. and has kicked one out of bounds... where is the follow up press on that???

well... just when we had the chance to take 1st place in the dicision the Skins fail to take advantage of the opportunity..typical.. I hope the realize the advantage they now have for the next few game to establish a cushion in our division.. somehting I myself had not even thought possible before the season start...what a shame it will be to implode now.. 5-11 was predicted.. and they have the chance to be 6-2 at the midway point even with the St Louis loss..

one last thing.. has anyone else screamed at their TV sets.... GO VERTICAL!!!!! seems the plays called are almost all outs.. or Jason has to check down to the underneath route... and yet.. the times they have gone vertical to Cooley in the seam they have completed passes... have Moos and El become so slow down the field, or has the O Line been so porous that Jason just doesn't have the time??? seems to me, of the 6 games i have watched.. he has had the time.. and yet the deep pass seems to be in hibernation most of the time..but when they use it, it usually works.. oh well...
