Skins Make A Helluva Deal

Getting 3 picks for this pick, one the team was never married to and one where it may have required a stretch given their needs, makes all the sense in the world.

They get 2 second round picks - 34 and 48 overall - and also get a 4th round pick, which they previously lacked (103 overall). So the Skins pick 34, 48 and 51 in the second round, then have two third round picks as well.

You can not load up on needs at O and D Line in that 2-3rd round range, and you are still going to be able to get a quality WR as well. Maybe not with as much upside, but kids like Simpson from Coastal Carolina could be excellent in the third round even if they don't take Kelly or Nelson in the second round.

Merling might be there with the 34th pick as well.

Jason, i believe we gave up a third and a fifth that you're not reporting

First?

Youth infusion begin! I love it. Now we need the scouts to come through and find us some starters.

Posted by: Booyah | April 26, 2008 5:43 PM | Report abuse

Wow . . . just wow!

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 5:43 PM | Report abuse

Great deal. We can get 3 quality, impact players with our 3 seconds! Best deal of the draft so far!!!!

Posted by: rich20ssu | April 26, 2008 5:44 PM | Report abuse

where are people getting the 3rd and 5th back to atlanta from?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 5:44 PM | Report abuse

hmm... we'll see how good this will be..

Posted by: bienbo | April 26, 2008 5:44 PM | Report abuse

did we give up a 3 and 5?

Posted by: rich20ssu | April 26, 2008 5:45 PM | Report abuse

Skins got two second rounders and a four, and also gave up a three and a five.

So I believe LaCantReporta is mistaken.

Posted by: From PFT | April 26, 2008 5:45 PM | Report abuse

Good deal! Lets parlay that into some solid contributors.

Posted by: Dcteejay | April 26, 2008 5:45 PM | Report abuse

Yes! I would love to have heard Thomas' name called there, but seeing as not a single wideout's name was called, I'm confident that there will be quality players available in rds 2 and 3. Lets get some D!!!!

Where are people getting info on giving ATL picks???

NFL Network

where r u getting this?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 5:45 PM | Report abuse

This reminds me of the days of Jimmy Johnson trading 1st rounders for more picks. That turned out pretty well. I'm happy with the move.

Posted by: ga8085 | April 26, 2008 5:46 PM | Report abuse

if we gave up 3 and 5 we got robbed - esp considering what philly got

Posted by: jayjay | April 26, 2008 5:46 PM | Report abuse

Wow...just WOW. I always wondered what kind of an offer it would take to actually get even Vinny Cerrato to make a good deal.

The Falcons just got hosed and they probably don't even know it yet. Ya gotta love a franchise that's still making personnel decisions based off of the Vick disaster.

Posted by: Chris | April 26, 2008 5:46 PM | Report abuse

if we gave up a 3 and 5, then i hate this trade.

we didnt get more picks. we downgraded a 1st rounder and upgraded a 3rd rounder. WEAK. our front office sucks

Posted by: jayjay | April 26, 2008 5:47 PM | Report abuse

Agreed if we gave the picks in essence we only got ONE pick for this one...a mid 2nd RNDR

Posted by: sephtical | April 26, 2008 5:47 PM | Report abuse

it's a 1,3 and 5 for two 2's and 4? come on, that f-ing blows!

Posted by: rich20ssu | April 26, 2008 5:47 PM | Report abuse

man, 2+2+4 doesn't equal 1+3+5. this better not be true.

Posted by: [cc] | April 26, 2008 5:48 PM | Report abuse

If the Skins gave up a three and a five along with a #1 Vinny Cerrato should be fired, it would be reason 967 he shouldn't be working in the NFL.

Jason what say you? Did the Skins really give up a third and 5th rounder in this deal?

Posted by: Chris | April 26, 2008 5:48 PM | Report abuse

That does not seem like enough for me. I have to assume that they really don't think highly of any of the guys that people still view as the high impact guys - Merling, Jenkins, Thomas, etc.

I think for what they got, I might have made the pick.

Posted by: RedBee | April 26, 2008 5:48 PM | Report abuse

we want ALL the picks!

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 5:49 PM | Report abuse

Who is correct? Yahoo or Jason?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 5:49 PM | Report abuse

even with 3/5th its a good trade 3 2nd rounders is huge...

If Merling falls, that would be kooky amazing

Posted by: chris larrY | April 26, 2008 5:49 PM | Report abuse

It makes sense from the chart which values the picks. The Skins get to turn a 5th into a 4th, a 3rd into a second, and Atlanta gets to turn a second into a first. It's good for the Skins because all the players they like are valued as second rounders. Main thing this does is increases the chance Jordy Nelson is a skin.

Posted by: skinfanman | April 26, 2008 5:50 PM | Report abuse

This trade was actually part of the trade we made with Atlanta for Duckett....right?

You scratch my back....oh never mind

Posted by: Huh? | April 26, 2008 5:50 PM | Report abuse

I'm watching NFL Network and ESPN, one of them came up with the trade, I believe ESPN, saying it was complicated, because we were giving back those two picks

Posted by: kreitmaster | April 26, 2008 5:50 PM | Report abuse

a 1 and 5 should have gotten the 2, 2 and 4. no need to give up our 3 as well.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 5:50 PM | Report abuse

ESPN sucks and so does this trade if that is correct! I can't believe we gave up picks for trading down! We gained 1 pick for moving out of the 1st? That blows!!!!!

Posted by: redryan400 | April 26, 2008 5:50 PM | Report abuse

JayJay - It was a 2nd, but your point is made.

ok, then this trade not so good. how did the eagles get a 2, 4 and future 1 and all we get is a bump from 3 to 2, 5 to 4. that sucks

Posted by: what??? | April 26, 2008 5:52 PM | Report abuse

ugh that Duckett trade was terrible. Vinny SUCKS. also i guess it was a 2nd for Clinton not a 1st - but still, and we gave Portis 50 Mil. we will never win it all with the jokers we have running the personnel

Posted by: jayjay | April 26, 2008 5:52 PM | Report abuse

I'm really impressed! Looks like they're really building through the draft.

Sometimes a so-so trade is a great trade, like when it saves salary cap space. No 1st round pick means lots of money saved.

Posted by: Leevi98 | April 26, 2008 5:53 PM | Report abuse

All we are gaining is a mid 2nd (48)...stop focusing on 3 2nd rounders, we already had one, and the other one (34) is a downgrade from what we coulda had at (21)

Posted by: sephtical | April 26, 2008 5:53 PM | Report abuse

Wait and see who they pick. But at this point I think the trade is great.

Of course, the trade the Eagles made was much better, but that's because the Panthers were desperate. Fox might feel like he's got to win now or he's out of a job.

Round 2, Pick 3 (34) (From Raiders through Falcons)
Round 2, Pick 17 (48) (From Texans through Falcons)
Round 2, Pick 20 (51)
Round 3, Pick 33 (96) (Compensatory selection)
Round 4, Pick 4 (103) (From Falcons)

Posted by: B. Lloyd | April 26, 2008 5:54 PM | Report abuse

I hate our FO as much as the rest of you but if you the generally accepted draft postion values, we actually came out +80 on this deal.

Don't forget our picks were generally at the end of each round while the Falcons were much earlier.

Let's see who we pick up with the 34th pick before we jump overboard.

Posted by: marksmen99 | April 26, 2008 5:54 PM | Report abuse

and falcons ge our 5th rounder

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 5:55 PM | Report abuse

Once again...all you guys can do in here is B itch B ITCH B ITCH....You guys complain over every single thing the Skins do...If they traded for a now WR you would b itch..if they made a pick you would B itch and they traded down for more picks...which everyone was saying they should do for months leading up to this ...and you still B itch....

They could win the SB and you guys would be complaining that someone dropped a pass in the first drive of the game.

Posted by: Leevi98 | April 26, 2008 5:56 PM | Report abuse

I mean - if they felt the player value in the second rounds is the same and they are trying to save money, then ok. But since when do we care about the salary difference between a late first and an early second?

Posted by: jayjay | April 26, 2008 5:56 PM | Report abuse

According to NFL.com its true and I HATE THIS DEAL!!! I knew Vinny making a decent deal was too good to be true.

The Falcons got the Skins third round pick #84 overall, and the Skins fifth round pick #151 overall. Vinny wasn't even smart enough to make the Falcons take the Redskins second selection in the third round, they got the 21st pick in the third round!

Posted by: Chris | April 26, 2008 5:56 PM | Report abuse

but still the eagles got way more for their pick.

Posted by: hmph | April 26, 2008 5:53 PM

The difference is that the Panthers were trading for Otah and the Falcons were trading for Baker. Few expected Otah to fall that far, and Baker was a reach.

Posted by: skinfanman | April 26, 2008 5:56 PM | Report abuse

Isn't that 3rd and 5th from the TJ Duckett trade? We didn't give them up in this trade, we got a bad deal before and they did now, so it is a wash overall

Posted by: jimmy | April 26, 2008 5:57 PM | Report abuse

Yahoo is right, this is not really a great deal, just means Vinny is cheaping out so they don't have to pay a first round salary. Jason is an idiot, the the facts before posting dummy!

Posted by: maiden | April 26, 2008 5:57 PM | Report abuse

it's not a terrible trade - but it seems like treading water to me. I don't think we can call it a "great" deal. Now the way it was originally reported (Just giving up the first) it would have been a steal.

Posted by: jayjay | April 26, 2008 5:57 PM | Report abuse

i wish most of you would just convert and be a Dallas fan....cause all you do is COMPLIAN ABOUT EVERYTHING THEY DO!

Posted by: Leevi98 | April 26, 2008 5:58 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Leevi98 | April 26, 2008 6:00 PM | Report abuse

JayJay--I don't think money is a consideration (as always). The problem I have with this deal is Vinny (as usual) managed to turn a strength into a weakness.

The Redskins held the first round pick the Falcons wanted to get an OL to protect their new QB before he could be taken. The Skins acted out of desperation to get out of the #21 spot and didn't get nearly enough at all. You don't give up picks when it's the OTHER team that wants to move up.

Posted by: Chris | April 26, 2008 6:00 PM | Report abuse

According to NFL.com the skins

down-traded their 1 -> 2

and upgraded the 3 & 5:
3 -> 2
5 -> 4

They should have gotten more for the first rounder.

Posted by: jl | April 26, 2008 6:01 PM | Report abuse

you guys who criticize the deal are all retards.......our 1, 3 and 5 are at the end of each round while the two 2s and 4 are much earlier....we save money, and probably pick up the same caliber of guy we wanted at 23 at 32........who at 23 was worth keeping the pick for?

The only reason the Eagles got so much retard was because Otah was expected to go much much higher......where we were there was no superstar guy....

Posted by: Pony Boy | April 26, 2008 6:02 PM | Report abuse

From the new draft pick value chart we gave up 1000.8 points and got 1068 points. We drop 13 spots from our 1st round pick; we move up 36 spots from our 3rd round pick and we move up 51 spots from our 5th round pick. We didn't rob anyone but we didn't get robbed either.

Posted by: thiner | April 26, 2008 6:05 PM | Report abuse

We couldn't trade our second pick in the 3rd round because it was a compensatory pick.
