Skins Say No to T.O. Speculation

Jason Reid and Jason La Canfora report:

League sources confirm reports that the Redskins at this point have no interest in pursuing free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens. Obviously, that could change if the market for Owens were to drop, but at this point the team has determined that whatever talent he has left does not outweigh the risk of bringing him into the locker room.
...

Free agent offensive lineman Ray Willis, who played four seasons with Seattle, visited Redskins Park yesterday.

Guru,

You have the worst solutions for helping this team out.

'Fire JC' this and 'Sign TO' that.

Really?

Posted by: matthewvickers | March 5, 2009 11:56 AM | Report abuse

Would love it if they signed Willis and Brown, that would be a solid infusion of youth that we are way overdue for. if they could get that done they could trade back and get a LB and Mack/Unger that would be sweet! trade down to late teens and grab Laurinitus and then get Mack if he falls (unlikely) or more likely Unger in the second.

Posted by: zjfr2 | March 5, 2009 11:57 AM | Report abuse

Bad move. They should reconsider.

Well, at least they can still cut Jason Campbell, and bring someone else in or coach up Colt before the OTAs begin.

'Fire JC' this and 'Sign TO' that.

Posted by: matthewvickers

I now say either/or.

Either fire Jason Campbell OR Sign T.O.

T.O. is the only thing that could make Jason Campbell resemble a decent quarterback. Otherwise, he will continue to be a mediocre, no talent, unintelligent, non-TD throwing loser.

Vickers, leave "Sports_Guru" alone. Unless there's a cure for retardation, he's hopeless.

Posted by: brownwood26 | March 5, 2009 11:59 AM | Report abuse

He's 35, he's not the threat he used to be and most importantly, he's disrupted every team he's been on - San Fran, Philly and Dallas. I wouldn't be surprised if no team signs him.

He belongs in the CFL. At least there he could help one of the franchises sell tickets/apparel.

Posted by: Sports_Guru | March 5, 2009 12:04 PM | Report abuse

Sorry... I'm going to be the voice of reason here.

This football and TO is a tremendously talented individual. If Snyder offered him a 2 year deal with incentives heavily tied to TEAM success (not individual stats) like Winning the Division, Conference, Super Bowl, or Beating Dallas, etc... then I think it would work out tremendously. If our 08 rookie WR's showed promise for 09, then I would say no. But Thomas and Kelly showed minimal (if any) progress in 08 and should not be depended on as that big, outside WR that we all know TO is. He is a physical specimen and, lost step or not, is still good for 1000+ yards, 10+TD's, and a fiery attitude... which is something we have been lacking over the years. Complaining is one thing, but a fiery attitude is totally different.

I say bring him on!!!! "Give" him to Zorn and let the head coach make the decision if things go sour. Put something in the contract about "disorderly conduct" and make it known up front that we will not tolerate it. I think he would be an awesome addition,,, even though I hate him!

But, pay some respect to the original 81 (Art Monk) and wear 18 instead of your usual 81!!!!!

As far as Jason handling T.O. and his tantrums, he will need to toughen up for that.

Oh and what's the difference between T.O. and Flounder?

Dude, take a pill.

Relax, Campbell is only a quarterback, not Hitler, a guy who was also very inaccurate with his throws to the deep outside.

I'd argue for cutting Colt-yes, I said that-and sneaking in a servicable vet who can be an option should Campbell's game not be up to snuff next season.

I'm not a Collins fan. His signing was as much an over reaction as the trade for #99 was last summer.

The exact same path...except for that whole "one was a physical beast drafted second overall, while the other was a 4th-rounder" thing.

I am not, and have never been, "pessimistic about everything." There is a difference between pessimism and realism.

I am being realistic. You are being irrational. I could hope for it to rain money tomorrow, and if it did I'd be happy. That doesn't mean I'm going to realistically think it will happen.

Nor am I going to start suggesting that a career backup with the Cards who was drafted in the 4th round will turn into a prototype blue-chipper who just needed a new environment and a position change to revitalize his career.

Again, I hope the team signs him. He is a young backup, and those seem to be in short supply at Redskins Park. Trust me - I'd love for him to prove me wrong. But I'm being realistic.

There is no way we can get a starting DE and OLB in the draft even if we forgot Orakpo and dropped back for more picks. We still couldn't do it even if we traded next years first for an early second. We need to sign Brown for O-line Depth, suck it up with Heyer/Jansen at RT, and go after either a DE or an OLB in FA, then we can sign Orakpo and go for depth in the Draft.

bigfish, I'm not against signing Brown. I'm against signing him for a decent/large contract with the intentions of using him as any sort of solution to the offensive line issues. The fact that Davis turned out to be one of the few anomalies doesn't change the fact that Brown is a career backup for an offensive line that, frankly, isn't that great.

So long as signing him does nothing to change the intention of drafting an elite tackle prospect, I'm all for it.

THE ANTI-T.O. LIST
Posted by Mike Florio on March 5, 2009, 11:17 a.m. EST
As we’re doing with Mike Vick, we’ll be keeping a running tally of all of the teams that have said ”thanks” followed immediately by “no thanks” to the possibility of signing receiver Terrell Owens.

Please note that this only reflects teams that already have said that they’re not interested:

The Dallas Cowboys. (Duh.)

The New York Giants.

The Washington Redskins.

The Baltimore Ravens.

The San Francisco 49ers.

Here are the teams that likely will join the list soon:

The Philadelphia Eagles.

The Minnesota Vikings.

The Miami Dolphins.

Well let’s see, these were the guys who obtained Bruce Smith, Deion Sanders, Adam Archuletta, Brunell, Weurfell, Jason Taylor and oodles of other players and coaches well past their expiration date. Oh and tried to trade TWO #1 picks for another burned out head case, Ocho Cinco, LAST year about this time. So it is more than reasonable to speculate that the subject came up at Redskin Park.

Yeah, the Post and posters “speculated.” What the hell do you think this board is for—aside from letting unclever minds like your own try to forget they’re surrounded by slush and urine-stained snowbanks?

Ok,

Blache needs to implement pass catching drills for every player on the defense. One hour at the end of practice devoted to tip drills, fumble scoopes, AND CATCHING BALLS!

Our DBs seem to be shocked when a ball is coming their way, and they drop them. Catching balls needs to be second nature. The only way to score TDs on defense, something we didn't do all last season is to get and keep possession of turnovers, and do it in such a way that you are heading toward the opponent's end zone while securing the loose ball.

Alex the difference with the JT signing, was they were in the process of trading for him.

So they told poor little JLC they were not interested, and he got all mad.

They didn't inform all the people at ESPN that they were not interested in JT.

I've been bashing the Redskins' FO a lot lately, but this is also the team that acquired Cornelius Griffin, Shawn Springs, Clinton Portis, Marcus Washington, Ray Brown (again), London Fletcher, Todd Collins, Casey Rabach, Randy Thomas, Santana Moss, and several other players that still had plenty left in the tank at the time. So let's try to avoid playing the 'laundry list' game, because it goes both ways.

As for the speculation, this board is for us to speculate all we want. However, I expect a lot more from the Post. When the speculation that comes from the owners of the blog is consistently less informative than the comments from everyday schmoes like you and me, there's a serious problem.

The commenters here at RI basically shamed the Post into putting up this slapped-together update by pointing out news they had been scooped on in the previous thread. That has to be humiliating.

Funny how no one is mentioning that a destination for T.O. could be the Tennessee Titans.

Thing is, I don't know if Jeff Fisher would want him there.

The Steelers could use a receiver with his size and talent - but they obviously don't need him to win.

The entire AFC west could be a landing spot for T.O.

If he's signed anywhere, I think it's with a AFC team.

CERRATO CONFIRMS THAT THE ‘SKINS DON’T WANT T.O.
Posted by Mike Florio on March 5, 2009, 12:30 p.m. EST
At a time when some mixed reports were beginning to emerge as to whether the Washington Redskins are interested in receiver Terrell Owens, the team has removed all doubt on the matter.

Per the team’s official web site, executive V.P. of football operations Vinny Cerrato says that the team has no interest.

“[Owens’s representatives] called us three years ago before he went to Dallas, and we didn’t have interest then,” Cerrato said. “Why would we have interest when he’s three years older now? We have no interest.”

“[Owens’s representatives] called us three years ago before he went to Dallas, and we didn’t have interest then,” Cerrato said. “Why would we have interest when he’s three years older now? We have no interest.”

Elton Brown sounds like a good depth signing to backup Dock and Thomas, for now. If they think hes good, he can take over for Thomas eventually.

He will take the place of Kendall and Fabini for now.

Flound, I think a team will take a chance on him.

Who?

I don't know. Pick a team from the AFC west, the Titans, the Colts, the Browns, the Bengals -they could have Chad Johnson, T.O., Chris Henry, and 'Lavy' Coles.

I can't think of a single NFC team that would consider signing him. Maybe the Rams or Saints.

"League Sources" means that Cindy spoke with JLC and JLC talked to Barry and Barry talked to Cindy.

With Brown and Willis, Skins could take Orakpo in the 1st and Luigs (center) in the 3rd.

Remember last year Coach Zorn was ticked that we didn't have a back-up center. Then Buges got busy working Jansen and Geisinger at center. Still don't have a back-up center, expect Redskins to draft one.

Outside LB: Blades, Fincher (re-sign), Matt Sinclair, re-sign Marcus Washington, sign a free-agent later.

RESKINS SIGN PUNTER DIRK JOHNSON!!

Posted by: chrislarry | March 5, 2009"

Heyer is the "swing man" CL. Think of him as the 6th starter on the OL. He isn't a guard at this point but more of a tackle.

This guy is a young guard, ostensibly a replacement for the much older Kendall.

Again, I believe we see Snyder's single-mindedness at work. He isn't going to go for anyone over the age of 30 unless he has to and he won't sign them to a multi-year contract. This is his new mantra.

Will it work? If he had someone who was better than appraising talent than he and Vinne I would say yes.

And where is Olshansky? He must want to stay in San Diego.

"With Brown and Willis, Skins could take Orakpo in the 1st and Luigs (center) in the 3rd."

They need a starting left tackle. There is no guarantee that Samuels will be the same after this latest set of injuries. Clearly Heyer is a "swing man" and not a starter. Jensen is done.

They really have to take the tackle in the draft. Most experts consider the linebacking available in the draft questionable.

However, you are probably right. I am hoping they try to wrangle some high rounders from folks who have multiples in exchange for future draft picks. It mortgages the future ... I know. Its definitely NOT GOOD.

But they have already starting skipping merrily down this path and so I don't see any way around it.

The Redskins have “no interest” in signing wide receiver Terrell Owens, executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said.

Owens was released on Thursday by the Dallas Cowboys.

“[Owens’s representatives] called us three years ago before he went to Dallas, and we didn’t have interest then,” Cerrato said. “Why would we have interest when he’s three years older now? We have no interest.”

"Did we resign Kendell I forget, I thought we had enough Guards.

Posted by: alex35332 | March 5, 2009"

They did not resign Kendall. So far in this off season, Snyder has scrupulously avoided signing anyone over the age of 28. Including Evans.

He did renegotiate some contracts with ARE, Griffin etc. And he could have released Griffin. Apparently the coaching staff convinced him that it would be folly to lose Griffin at this point.

He has apparently set a goal to make this team significantly younger ... Perhaps the JT deal was the straw that broke the camel's back where that is concerned?

Hi All,
What's the latest on Elton Brown? My brother is a UVA alum, and I remember going down to watch Brown play at Scott Stadium. I also admired the way he pulled as a guard. THe man could move! And to be honest, I felt as if I was watching a Joe Gibbs power run game at times. He'd be a great Randy Thomas successor.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | March 5, 2009 1:30 PM | Report abuse

With Willis and Brown visiting Redskins Park I am glad to see that the team is NOT going to go into the 2009 draft with a big, fat hole at RT.

We need to find some depth there, preferably a younger lineman that we can bring along and at reasonable cost.

Willis seems to be a promising player, a guy with good size who started 10 games last year for Seattle.

Brown is more versatile in being able to play OG as well.

I don't expect to see Jason Fabini back in 2009 so finding depth inside is also very important.

Hopefully, the team can enter the first round of the draft at #13 and not have to make a particular selection but can see how the board moves in the first few picks and who drops.

I would still like to see a young DE added to the roster and I think it will happen.

But if all the OT and DE are off the board by #13 why not trade back and pick up extra selections?

Draft DE AND OT later in round 1 and with a supplemental pick in round 2.

Then go for OLB in Round 3.

"I am being realistic. You are being irrational. I could hope for it to rain money tomorrow, and if it did I'd be happy. That doesn't mean I'm going to realistically think it will happen."

Let me get this straight. Hoping an existing NFL player turns out to be a good NFL player is like hoping for it to rain money? If it already rained penny's and I was hoping for something like quarters or dollars that might make sense.

Posted by: bigfish761 | March 5, 2009 1:49 PM | Report abuse

Maybe not a good fit for the Redskins, but I can see him having a lot of success at Baltimore. He'd really help out there offense. And Ray Lewis is a strong enough personality to help head-off any "shananigins".

Posted by: AggyPryd | March 5, 2009 1:17 PM | Report abuse

Actually if you remeber back, Baltimore HATES HIM! Baltimore is the team people like to forget in the T.O. saga.

Cuz he was already a Raven before he was an Eagle!

I think we need to get Phillip daniels in here ASAP before he gets signed like Evans. Sighn the O-lineman from Seahawks. The draft will be tricky. I think Orakpo will be gone. Sorry guys you know he will not be there at 13, but one if not both of those USC linebackers will be there. If all Else fails, we start H.B. Blades at Strong Side. He has played all the LB spots. If we would have done this right Evans and Daniels would never have hit free agency.

He'll probably make it. Everyone who has tried out from Seattle has made the skins roster at least for a short period of time ie. shawn alexander, ryan plakemier, there was a saftey we picked up (whose name escapes me right now).
