Giants drafted Kiwi, when they had Osi, and Strahan.

Cowboys drafted Bennet, and Jones, when they had Barber and Whitten.

Posted by: BeantownGreg | November 21, 2008 10:33 AM

A little different Greg...the Giants moved Kiwi to LB and with the Cowpies you can never have too many RBs. Unless we're moving Davis to WR, it's a dumb move.

Posted by: brownwood26 | November 21, 2008 10:36 AM

That after Kiwi's 1st year that they attemted to move him to LB. He was a DE the 1st but couldn't get on the field because of the people in front of him.......

Now did that really hurt so bad? To post something about the actually game being played and not some long diatribe about how Vinny f-ed the draft up? Now just do this EVERY DAY and this blog would be a much better place...

"And lets be honest here, this REEKS, of playing both sides of the fence. Had this trade been made, it would have been, "Dan playing fantasy football, and Vinny trading away draft picks again"

Couldn't agree more with this. I hated how everyone gave the Jets all the props for making those moves in the offseason, but if it were the 'skins FO, you would've heard how the Redskins are "champs of the offseason" and all that other B dot s.

Posted by: RedDMV | November 21, 2008 11:06 AM | Report abuse

OK, I watched the video:

1. His lips and the sound don't sync up ... Jason Reid could be a potential kung fu movies star.

2. Good point about the Skins being as healthy as they've ever been. Good time to get reps in the plays necessary to beat the Giants.

3. Disagree about Mr. Reid's "bad feeling" about this game. I foresee defensive touchdowns by the Skins. Hasselbeck is not just hurt, he's really hurt. Plus Zorn tipped off the D to all of Hasselbeck's tells. Plus three of Seattle's starting O-linemen is really hurt or out. Just a bad idea for them to even try to make Hasselbeck play. [And unlike Pittsburgh, who we would have beaten if they kept Big Ben on the field, Seattle does not have a Byron Leftwich.]

4. Agree that pass protection remains a problem, but Seattle's pass D sucks. Still, I say pull Jansen and start Heyer. Heyer needs the reps to get ready for the new york football giants game next week.

jm220,

Is it killing you not to bash JLC, F-CL don't let him tell you what to do.

Posted by: Flounder21 | November 21, 2008 11:07 AM | Report abuse

""Man, my head is still spinning. What a crazy day.

Anyway, to me, this is a move the Skins had to make. You're talking about picking up dudes who can, most likely, barely play in the NFL, if at all, versus getting a future Hall of Famer and the premier sack guy in the league over the last 10 years. (Okay, maybe it's Strahan, but he's retired now.)...

Taylor will certainly have some entertainment-type stuff he wants to do in the offseason, but with his pedigree, he's earned that right. He's been remarkably healthy his entire career - hasn't missed a start this decade - and is still a beast at 33. You have to try to make this move; there's no one else out there and it was already a very thin spot of the roster even with a healthy Daniels.

The Skins had to act decisively and they did...

Good for the Skins. Guys like Chris Wilson should learn a lot from Taylor, and it was a huge gamble banking on Daniels staying healthy all year as the starter in the first place, given his age and injury history.""

*****

The comments that I posted above are taken directly from Jason LaCanfora's July 20 post when the Skins first traded for Jason Taylor.

Compare these comments to the ones he wrote just today about the acquisition of Jason Taylor (previous blog post).

If anyone wonders why we rip JLa, well, here it is.

Posted by: p1funk | November 21, 2008 11:09 AM | Report abuse

Maybe this unit is primed for one of those Joe Gibbs December runs, where they pull into the postseason at the last possible minute. But with a team that's a year older and virtually unchanged from 2007, it won't be easy, and this pop-gun offense looks a whole lot like what we saw from Saunders and Gibbs the last four years, with few options and no new playmakers.

By Jason La Canfora | November 21, 2008; 10:30 AM ET

Can you seriously have a Joe Gibbs December run without Joe Gibbs?????

Thanks for taking the time to dig that one up. Just amazing what a slimey and small hypocrite Jasno is. Where's the integrity? I guess that's what the Post is looking for in a beat reporter.

There were similar reactions at the time elsewhere -- Peter King, not exactly the 'Skins biggest fan, praised Vinny for getting Taylor.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 21, 2008 11:15 AM | Report abuse

good investigative cutting and pasting there, pONE :)

It does make your point about the flip-flopping tendencies of La Canfora.

JLC is a waffling d0uche, and this wasn't the first and surely won't be the last that he's exposed for the FRAUD that he is.

Posted by: RedDMV | November 21, 2008 11:17 AM | Report abuse

Wow i was aboutto say how much i agreed with LJC about not helping ourselves by drafting a DE since the 90's until you pulled that older post. He could have said the same thing back then but he was riding the obvious wave, a ride he oft takes.

Posted by: Stu27 | November 21, 2008 11:23 AM | Report abuse

Nice job p1, just an excellent illustration of how this guy will find a way to twist any reality into a way to bash Vinny/FO no matter what. Even if he also agreed with any given move at the time.

Hindsight's an easy thing, the hard part is to look at things objectively, and that, as we all know, is where JLC falls incredibly short.

Posted by: craig2 | November 21, 2008 11:23 AM | Report abuse

JReid reports that all are present on the practice field, except for the missing Marcus Washington.

Posted by: CindyBoren | November 21, 2008 11:25 AM | Report abuse

Where is the flip-flopping with that? Did JLC say in his last post "I thought the Redskins should have never traded for Jason Taylor", or "From the beginning, I said this was a bad move"?

All he pointed out was that this move, in fact, has not panned out so far. He also pointed out the same shortcomings that he pointed out in his original, "positive" post.

If he came out and said "man, I thought was the right move in the beginning, but it turned out to be wrong," would that make you guys feel better? Seriously, I'm trying to get a feel for what you expect.

Here was the breakdown of seattle according to the NFL.com I went through the roster by hand.
42 african american 69%
16 white 26%
3 other/unidentified(no pic)

Thats about on par with the NFL average.

"Secondary Depth: Cerrato has done some astute work here."

"seventh-round safety Chris Horton is looking like the steal of the draft."

psps23:

JLC has an ax to grind. It's obvious that he and Cerrato dislike each other to extremes. The fact that he concedes some smart moves doesn't do away with the fact that he has been critical of the same issues with the Redskins EVERY WEEK this season.

He's still talking about personnel moves in the offseason, and we are almost to December of the season!

Posted by: shaunsherman12 | November 21, 2008 11:40 AM | Report abuse

psps23,

My beef is this: On July 20, JLa couldn't contain his excitement about the timeliness, brilliance, and breadth of this move.

Now in 20-20, his whole tone is "what were the Skins thinking when they did this, and look how much they paid for him".

It is one thing to straight report, but JLA does not do this. He adds commentary.

Some of us might respect his commentary a bit more if he were a little more consistent/honest in owning up to his own opinions, instead of just trying to throw the FO under the bus at every opportunity he gets.

Darryl Tapp was the other Seattle DE I was thinking about ... sorry to interrupt the righteously indignant ax grinding ...

Posted by: dcsween | November 21, 2008 11:54 AM | Report abuse

Regarding JLC list of issues on the previous thread:

a) Pass rush/DL - The defense is doing very well as it is. Only the best passing teams can take advantage of this weakness, and even then the secondary seems to neutralize the attack.

b) Offensive line - Banged up last year and this year still a major weakness. It's not the right line for the west coast offense, it works only when your running game can set up the pass. The trouble is the OL isn't the hogs, they are better at run blocking, but not dominant. Improving the OL is the highest priority.

c)Secondary depth - Tryon may or may not pan out. Picking up Hall was essential, he takes care of a short term need. We still need to pick up a promising rookie in the next year or two.

d) WR - too early to judge the rookies, too early to be completely sold on that package too. I don't blame Vinny for the shotgun approach in last years draft. If one of them comes around, it will be worth it. So far the results have been unimpressive to disappointing. At least Lloyd is gone.

e) Linebackers - This is a position of need too, but not the highest priority. Draft now and coach them up, or be stuck with at free agent action later. The Fletcher move was perfection.

Making the playoffs is statement enough for this old looking, new look team.

DikShut,

Here's an idea I heard floated on WaPo live which actually makes some pass-rushig sense.

1)Let Evans start at LDE (where he's been effective).

2)Move Taylor back to RDE (where he's comfortable).

3)Move Carter to strong side LB (where we need someone to fill in for Marcus).

We've got our 3 best pass-rushers on the field every down. Carter can move around. He's played OLB before. He may not like it, but the coaches can tell him to cram it since he hasn't been getting it done on the end.

p1,

Carter played OLB in San Fran and it didn't work out too well.

Hey "Rypien11". How many "white sheets" do you have in your trunk ? I bet you have never had contact with a black. Don't know if you have a TV, knowing you live in the backs woods of WV. "BREAKING NEWS" WE HAVE A BLACK PREZ

O_etrod,

Carter is playing RDE for us and it's not working out so well. Could it hurt our pass rush any worse to try?

Posted by: p1funk | November 21, 2008 12:13 PM | Report abuse

How about not blitzing predictably on third down and long and getting burned for big yards every time because even though we send 8 guys against 5 blockers we still can't even breathe on the QB.

Random question - where can I find out the identities of the other Skins owners (other than Snyder obviously)? I looked quick on line and only found big Dan.

Washington is always so high in his ancle spraineyness.

From the Redskins blog:

Coach Zorn called Portis a gametime decision, noting “I thought he’d be more involved today,” but that’s ahead of where he was at this time last week.

Ladell Betts will definitely play, though. And Shawn Springs and Malcolm Kelly both continued to participate.

So it looks very much like the team will be near full strength on Sunday (with the exception of Washington), and like Zorn will finally be able to pick and choose his inactives based on what he wants to do, not what he has to do.

Good news...as far as who will be available...

Man, this is a football blog. Keep your political and racial ideas to yourself especially since the prez-elect is just like a cross section of america. He is bi-racial, he has a bit of all of us in him.

Actually in SF, he was an OLB in a 3-4 scheme which was completely different than in a 4-3.

If Carter moved to OLB now, he'd be learning a new position in the middle of the season and could be exploited badly in pass coverage.

Another (non) pass-rush option:

Our DBs are a strength of the team. With Springs back healthy and Smoot, Rogers, Hall on the roster; why don't we just flood the secondary w/ 6DBs? Use Springs as a 3rd safety along with Landry and Horton.

Maybe we get ourselves a couple of "coverage sacks" or start picking off a few more balls.

Poolman, you are still an idiot, don't make up numbers when people have this magic thing called the internet and can pull up Census data.

Seattle Pop. 2000
White 382,532
Black 46,545 - this is closer too 8.5%
Asian 73,512
Hispanic 29,719
Other 31,066

I have never heard a single complaint about race relations in that city. Most the people I know in Seattle are hippies though.

suzanne- I'm pretty sure Snyder bought out his minority partners within a couple years of getting the team, and is the sole owner.

Cyn, is my remembery correct?

Ok, for how long were you enslaved? And who was your owner?

Posted by: daggar | November 21, 2008 12:24 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, I meant who owns the team with him now. Technically Pro Football, Inc. owns the Skins, but Dan is the majority owner. When they bought it, there was a group of them, just trying to figure out who they are. Partner at my firm is the bro-in-law or cousin or cousin-in-law to one of them -so close that he coudn't remember his name, but he sits in the box at the Dallas game, so I just trying to figure it out. Was it someone named Zuckerman or is that someone who was trying to buy the Nats?

For anyone to argue that that JLC does NOT have personal issues with this FO and that he does NOT show it regularly with his writing is simply ridiculous.

Posted by: craig2

I never argued that he doesn't. It's obvious that the two don't like each other.

However, when JLC does criticize, he almost always has substance to back it up (I say "almost" because I don't want to put a definite stamp on it, but in truth I can't remember a time when he didn't have substance).

He doesn't bash for the sake of bashing. Again, numerous times he has given praise to this team and the organization, evidenced by the 3 different instances I pointed out in his "negative" post.

He likes Jason Campbell. He likes Ladell Betts. He loves Rock Cartwright. He loves London Fletcher. He likes Carlos Rogers. He likes Chris Horton. All these guys he's showered with praise, even going to the point of lauding Fletch and Rogers to be selected to their 1st pro bowls, and to laud CP as a front-runner for league MVP at the midpoint of the season.

But as soon as you guys hear something deemed as "negative", like how Thomas/Kelly have not produced like Royal/Jackson/Avery (fact), or how the Jason Taylor trade has not worked out so far (pretty much fact), or when he questions why a guy who never contributes to the team keeps his spot over a guy who contributed regularly (a completely legitimate question to ponder), or how the team struggles to sack the quarterback despite being a top defense (fact), you guys simply throw it out as some sort of bias against the Redskins. It's not. They're completely legitimate criticism/concerns. I don't get why you guys hate it so much.

Even though we cant get to the qb is it a personnel, scheme or HEART issue.

You know what I find amazing? Dan Snyder was 34 when he bought the Skins - I will be 34 in April and think that I am doing pretty well for myself, but WOW! Love or hate the guy - that's pretty impressive.

People - stop wasting time with the race relation arguments against you know who. He is not black.

Instead, harp on him for what a loser he is for needing constant attention over the internet. Its much more productive.

Oh, fine. Let's talk about next years draft priorities, as opposed to this years 6-4, could make some noise team, lol.

RB: Nothing. Maybe a late pick, since they lost Mason to the Jets, but if they did nothing it would be fine by me.

QB: Pretty much set here, too. Already drafted a Campbell backup.

O-Line: Everyone is in agreement here, I think. Another T, a big need at C, and a few G's are in order - though I don't think all that will be accomplished in a year. Start with a C & G.

WR: You have to stick with the bunch you drafted at this point...BUT...if someone like Boldin can go your way, and it's doable, that is hard to turn away from, because I think Moss is towards the end - he can't stay healthy.

TE: No needs here, obviously.

K: Standard competition for Suisham? Maybe. Let's see how he finishes, but they seem to have their answer there.

P: Well, don't draft one, lol. Definitely this spot is up for grabs. No free agent signings unless it's a proven top punter, please. Free-for-all competition.

S: Looks really good here, which is amazing considering the loss of Taylor (RIP). Horton and Landry have it locked up. If Doughty has a career issue with his injury, maybe they get someone FA for cheap.

CB: If Hall is his former self, no real needs here. Springs is as good as gone, but with Smoot under contract and a top flight guy (!) in Rogers, three deep in good cover guys is as good as it gets in the NFL. Tryon should be challenged by a FA signing after the draft.

LB: A good group, but old, with injury concerns, so a lot of work ahead. At least one decent pick should be used here. Fletcher is a beast, but when does the motor burn out? Washington looks done. Blades can play - and so can McIntosh, but his knees are a possible problem. They need depth, bigtime. A draft pick, and a few after draft signings. Maybe another free agency money pickup, with Blatche's blessing, could be had here.

DL: Not as bad as hyped to be. They need pass rushers, but they have decent depth here and good run stoppers. Monty and Golston are decent, though not exceptional. Evans is much better than expected. Carter seems to have improved against the run, but has disappeared this year rushing the passer - double teamed? Taylor says he's playing two years, but what is their plan for him? Will he be every down, or just a situational guy? Alexander isn't great, but since he can do everything, you have to have him. I'd draft a D-lineman somewhere in their draft (O-line first!), and see whose out there in free agency. That might be the way to fill gaps here.

Coaching Staff: Don't do a darn thing. They are just fine. Maybe a talk with Greg about who should replace him in the event of his retirement - same with Bugel.

Is anyone familuar with Seattle and what pregame festivities we should check out, I am going to make sure the skins are represented.
