Skins Select OLB in 5th Round

With the 158th pick just obtained from Minnesota, the Redskins have drafted Cody Glenn, an outside linebacker from Nebraska. He'll supply depth and special teams help.

Glenn was suspended from the team indefinitely and also faced a civil suit while at Nebraska. He spent three years as a tailback for the Cornhuskers and then switched to linebacker as a senior. Glenn's suspension arose from ticket scalping, according to a league source. He is very raw but certainly has athletic ability.

3 years as a running back?

51 tackles last year?

come on wow, we should've drafted Freeman with our draft choice instead of trading back. That didn't work out at all. Awful!

I think we thought we could trade back and still get Freeman, which would've been great. We got swindled by the Vikes again.

If we don't draft Duke Robinson or Herman Johnson by the 6th round (or trade up sooner to get one of them), I'm going to impale Vinny, Dracula-style.

It almost seems like the front office wants the offense to struggle this season to justify their lack of faith in Campbell.

On the other hand, I'm all for a sufficating defense.

All Redskins fans should know that we haven't had a good draft in a long time. I don't know why anyone is acting surprised. Let the hilarity continue!! I think we should draft an athletic quarterback and try to get him to play safety.

I'm not sayin its right... i'm just sayin

On Cody Glenn

"Was a revelation after the position change and his best football might still be ahead of him..."

"Major upside."

This sounds like a Olivadotti-Blache project. And on the defensive side of the ball, we actually do have a pretty good track record here.

Posted by: psps23 | April 26, 2009 3:18 PM | Report abuse

so far this is the way i see it: the o-side is a lame duck side. BUT greg blache is staying even with a new coach next year. so they're not even bothering with spending any real money on the O. just chalk up this year as a lame duck year. all indications(preserving next year's picks, not going after Sanchez, not spending money on the O at all other than dockery) are they're getting ready to hire a new big time coach for the 2010 season.

Posted by: dealer1 | April 26, 2009 3:18 PM | Report abuse

we could of had this LB as a seventh rounder or a free agent. Why waste a pick on him now.

Posted by: hehateme | April 26, 2009 3:19 PM | Report abuse

Weird pick. Not sure what they're thinking here other than the guy has a lot of potential because he is still growing into the position or maybe they were looking for a utility guy who could play RB and LB as well as special teams??? Okay, okay, it was just plain stupid. No OL and it's getting late. Snyder should fire Vinny right in the middle of the draft.

Posted by: RedSkinHead | April 26, 2009 3:19 PM | Report abuse

unbelievable waste of a 5th rnd pick. This guy is a free agent or 7th rounder, ast best. Francois from BC, their supposed target, would have been a much better pick. In reality, what's this guy gonna do for them - serve as a 3rd fullback ?

Posted by: OLDNOVA1 | April 26, 2009 3:20 PM | Report abuse

okay I'm gonna say

I would be happy with the following :

6th - Jamon Meredith OT
6th - Duke Robinson G
7th - DJ Moore CB/Herman Johnson G

I can't believe DJ Moore is still available right now, and I know another CB is overkill, but to get him in the 6th or 7th round would be possibly the BEST value in the draft. He has a legit shot at starting. Only negative is that he's a little small, but I think he's bigger than Tryon (which isn't saying much).

Man, I wish we had just gotten Freeman instead of trading back and getting a THREE YEAR RB-converted-LB, wow.

Posted by: TheTruth11 | April 26, 2009 3:20 PM | Report abuse

I find this surprising given his seeming lack of experience which makes it less likely that he is ready to contribute. It's especially surprising with Jamon Meredith and Duke Robinson sitting there at a position of major need.

Value pick in the third. I know absolutely nothing about this D-back. Ditto with the 158th pick at OLB, but we've got to have help in that area before the O-line. I do think it was a mistake to go for perceived value over need in the third. Would have picked OLB there and OG in the fifth. Picked comp seventh for a CB. Next draft will have to include a top LB and a FS on defense, and OT and WR. Maybe a RB depending on how CLINTON holds up. Relying on BETTS is a thin reed. Who took that contract to basically be a back-up. Highly intelligent I think. He would have been out of the NFL trying to start somewhere else.

Posted by: glawrence007 | April 26, 2009 3:23 PM | Report abuse

I don't get this pick. A guy with off the field issues, who played most of his college career as an RB and recently converted to the Wheel. I don't get it. I'd rather risk a project on the O-line. There could be a few rocks in these rounds that Buges could make into diamonds.

Posted by: skinsflorida | April 26, 2009 3:24 PM | Report abuse

As a Nebraska fan, I am simply stunned by this pick.

As JC said, Glenn only played half of one season at OLB and was suspended for the other half.

He did OK the first couple games against lower level competition but the rest of the games he played he was frequently out of position.

There is no way Glenn will play anything but special teams unless the Skins have major injury problems.

Vinny had two good OL sitting in his lap to choose from and screwed this up. NOBODY was expected to draft Glenn. He could have gotten him as a free agent after the draft.

Vinny is just a complete moron.

Posted by: DemBakerBoyz | April 26, 2009 3:26 PM | Report abuse

What's the word on the offensive linemen we signed in December? I recall picking up a few guys, and the kid from Atlanta started several games for them a year ago. The FO must have quite a bit of confidence in them (and in Heyer and Mike Williams) to completely ignore the line in the draft.

Maybe the Skins have a trade or something else in the works for a starting-caliber LB?

Posted by: Carl739 | April 26, 2009 3:27 PM | Report abuse

This is the first pick that has me scratching my head.

Orakpo...great pick.

Barnes was a projected late first early second prior to injury, with excellent combine scores and the best wonderlic score of anyone. That is NOT a reach...that is value jumping off the board at you in the third round.

Not sure on this Glenn cat...looks athletic and fast... but the suspension is the obvious issue. It COULD be a real sleeper steal. Seems like a high ceiling type pick.

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | April 26, 2009 3:27 PM | Report abuse

They traded back for this? A guy who played the position for less than a season? I can't wait to hear what Cerrato and Campbell have to say about this. What happened to shoring up the O Line? IDIOTIC

The Redskins will set the NFL record for most 3 and outs in the history of football. We will also set every major punting record known to many with the exception of yards per kick.

Rationale: nobody will be able to move the ball on our defense; our offense will not be able to move the ball.

No, he is just a yes man. Clearly Snidely Owl has a great deal of say in these picks. What you are seeing is a draft of guys who will mostly end up being situational players. Without a Gibbs and a Grilliams assertively pushing the draft you end up with a Dan Snyder Six Flags Production.

Its going to be really hilarious if Haynesworth and Hall go back to their old tricks and Orapko joins them. Then it will be the guys Snyder refuses to pay trying to cover for them. Grizzled old vets like Daniels, Kendall, Samuels, and Jansen. Or really young guys like Heyer and Blades. Its going to be interesting to see the fallout of that.

I guess the The Official Site Of The Washington Redskins was all smoke and mirrors when they posted:

Redskins May Pursue Offensive Tackles In Draft
In 10 years, the 2009 NFL Draft may go down as one of the best ever for offensive tackles.
That could be good news for the Redskins, who have identified the position as a need this offseason.
The Redskins’ entire starting offensive line consists of players past the age of 30. That includes Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels, who turns 32 in July, and right tackle Jon Jansen, who is 33.

Sorry kids....our OL will have to get its draft infusion of youth next year....as a late 5th to 7th round pick OL is a project...not a starter.

I prefer they grab some free agent OL after camp cuts then put in a 7th rounder to protect JC.

People, people, please! Just chill a bit. Lets wait and see what happens with the next few picks...O-line is not the worst in the league...I mean CP did have nice numbers we just wore down...some of our starters will be backups (a nice luxury to have prior probowl reserves) and there is still plenty of off season left too...beside, never met a dumb million or billionaire.

Cody Glenn

Analysis
Positives: Active linebacker with adequate speed and long arms, which he uses to wrap up ballcarriers consistently. … Attacks downhill, can go through a blocker when blitzing and is willing to throw a shoulder into a blocker to free up teammates. … Despite his lack of size, he can shed blocks on the edge and find his way through trash to the ballcarrier. … Uses his hands to fight off cut blocks. … Gives good chase down the line and hustles downfield. … Physical with running backs coming out on routes and can stay with them in the flat. … Good drop into coverage, finds the receivers in his area and has the hands to knock away passes.

Negatives: Has a safety build, is short and lacks upper- or lower-body bulk. … Runs around blocks instead of attacking them. … Nothing special in his change-of-direction agility -- best when he reacts to plays in front of him. … Gets engulfed when playing inside the tackles. … Inexperience at linebacker shows through in his lack of backfield awareness; consistently fooled by misdirection. … Must make plays on special teams to stick on a roster. … Durability and character concerns must be addressed at the Combine.

Cody Glenn

Overview
Arrived in Lincoln as a highly-touted running back and is leaving a linebacker with NFL potential. He switched positions in the spring of 2008 after struggling through leg and foot injuries for 18 months. Despite his lack of experience, he earned the starting nod on the weak side and showed himself to have the mentality to play at a high level on defense. He even played in the middle during the season. His senior season did not go exactly to plan, as he played only nine games due to a suspension for violating team rules. In that time he made 51 tackles, six for loss and had four pass breakups, causing scouts to wonder what he might become with more experience.

sorry but I'm starting to think I'd have done a better job even without spending all the time our FO (supposedly) spent on scouting.

I'd even let Vinny do the first two picks.

at 150, I'd even let him trade back

but we just kept pushing it, I think we wanted Meredith, Johnson, and Robinson to fall to the 7th but that wasn't gonna happen.

Jeeze. I'm really, really disappointed. I thought that was just a nobrainer. And it's not like they passed on those guys for someone better, instead we got some guy who spent 3/4 of his career on the opposite side of the ball than where we want him to be. Ouch.

This one just kills me, such an obvious pick and our draft was looking good.

You know... I'm not the brightest guy around but why did they pick up such a PROJECT at LB when they could've picked up a guy like Jamon Meridith who can play G and T?!

Who is running this draft? Oh yeah.. Danny boy. He can't evaluate football talent unless there's a big name associated with it... and he still misses most of the time.

I love the skins... but I hate Snyder/Cerrato.

The way this team has picked thus far, you would swear that the defense was ranked 19th and the offense was 4th. They have no plan whatsoever. I would have never guessed that the Skins would become the East's version of the Raiders.

LB is a position of need, too, almost as much as OL. NFL.com says:

"Pick Analysis: The Redskins pick up a versatile prospect with excellent special teams potential. Glenn has only one year of experience at linebacker, but he's intriguing because of his athleticism and toughness."

The guy is a warrior but he is now a straight ahead snow plow who ought to be at center or guard. He lost his lateral motion and agility due to the achilles tendon tear and the ankle break. He doesn't have much left in the tank. Heyer is still very raw, most predict he will always be a decent backup/swing man.

We play in the BEAST. These guys will get smacked around by the defenses they will be facing. Remember Terrell Suggs:"Yea I know you were depleted"

It seems like a long time ago but wasn't our defense pretty good last year? Oh well, someone posted it earlier and I think it has legs: They're improving a already good defense and neglecting the offense. This way when we go 5-11, they can flush Zorn and JC, say "I told you so" and hire a splashy new coach. The nice defense will be in place and the new coach can install his own offense and pick a brand new shiny qb in next year's draft to go with it.
Also, I'd be willing to bet my life that Mr.Redskin21 may own, but does not wear, any pants without an elastic waistband.

Steelers have an oustanding defense, #1 in the NFL. Their offense was their only liability. But they were smart enough to draft OL with their 2nd pick. They're hoping that will help Big Ben do better than the 17 TDs, 15 INTs, and 80.1 QB rating he had last year.

Addressing the real problem... I guess that's why they're the Super Bowl champs.

u know what im not going to get too worried about these late round picks...

I didnt really get too upset about the Kevin Barnes pick, I think that could work out nice. I would have obviously preffered an OT but they must be targeting guys in late free agency to get such as a Levi Jones from cincinnati who i suppose is relatively young compared to the rest of our Oline at 29. He is a 7 year starter and would be an upgrade at RT. Maybe then move Heyer to guard.

The need at Oline is just so glaring to everybody and despite how dumb our FO is I dont think they would be THAT stupid. I think come summertime we will have a starting caliber RT and we wont need to worry as much. Our two big needs were at RT and DE.. We got a HUGE pickup with Orakpo, problem solved at DE and now we just need the starting RT so if we get that via free agency im happy and am not worried about us not drafting an OT.

Gary Horton: I was a scout for the Cleveland Browns when Ozzie finished his playing career. When he decided that he wanted to be involved in personnel, I used to sit with him and watch film for long periods of time. I was fascinated that a guy that was such a great player and was just coming off of that career had such a great feel for personnel. Not only does Ozzie evaluate players well, but I think he has a rare big picture feel. He knows where players fit. He knows how to maneuver the draft. I think his best ability may be the fact that he really listens to his scouts and coaches. If you give him the right information, nobody is better at diciphering it. As an example, I love what they did in the first round. They needed a OT and Michael Oher was sitting there. Ozzie decided to move up and they filled a need with a guy that will play for a long time. He's not afraid to make bold moves when necessary. I continue to be amazed year in and year out for his feel for the draft, in knowing when to move up, move down or to stand pat. That speaks to his information gathering and preparation.

And this is why we lose year in and year out with Snyder.

The Brain Trust (specifically Zorn) are on record as saying they will draft or sign a 4th QB.

Glenn is fast and athletic. Seems like a tailor made S'teamer. The roster needs those young fast LB/S body types to run down and make tackles.

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | April 26, 2009 4:00 PM | Report abuse

As a Nebraska fan, I am simply stunned by this pick.

As JC said, Glenn only played half of one season at OLB and was suspended for the other half.

He did OK the first couple games against lower level competition but the rest of the games he played he was frequently out of position.

There is no way Glenn will play anything but special teams unless the Skins have major injury problems.

Vinny had two good OL sitting in his lap to choose from and screwed this up. NOBODY was expected to draft Glenn. He could have gotten him as a free agent after the draft.

Vinny is just a complete moron.

So far in the offseason, Skins got a DL (best in the league in his prime), a DE/LB that has amazing speed off the corner (we needed help on the DL) and we got Mike Williams, and Dockery back to help the OL. They are addressing the 2 largest needs we have. On Defense, we got better. Now can the OL protect Campbell and will those "amazing" offensive weapons we drafted last year step up? That is the question.

Who the hell are you? Some "Truth" ... limited, no "big picture".

Pittsburgh had 16 TDs on the ground. Both starting backs had longest runs greater than 30 yards. The QBs scored 3 TDs on the ground. Ben got sacked 46 times but he also ran a lot with 34 attempts. They had 19 TDs. through the air. A good 50/50 mix. Yes they gave up a lot of sacks but there's is a VERY, VERY young, new offensive line that played together for the last time last year. Yet they still managed to win the superbowl.

Look at their ages and compare them with the Redskins. Which team's line do you think has the highest potential upside?Especially with Urbik in the mix?

They played the toughest schedule in the league, but you have to consider all the intangibles, Total offense, turnover ratio and (above all in our case) POINTS SCORED..Skins could march all over the 50, but they go down to the red zone, and the creeping menace would set in..Zorn's playcalling and Suisham's hammy didn't help..The sacks allowed by Pittsburgh doesn't take into account the times they held the line for Ben to make the big throw..

Posted by: frak | April 26, 2009 4:14 PM | Report abuse

Only thing I can figure is that Vinny and Danny think that Kelly and Thomas' increased production along with Zorn's improved play calling(it can't get worse)will make up the difference for our lack of an OL. If we give up 17 points this year the games over. Puts a lot of pressure(and huge expectations) on the defense.

The Steelers won the Superbowl because their offense scored points despite their Oline deficiencies. Their QB made plays, and so did their receivers.

Not many NFL rosters can sustain multiple injuries across the Oline without faltering. The Redskins certainly could not last year.

Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly need to make big strides this year. If they do, Redskins will be in every game ie they won't be outclassed by anybody,

If they don't we are gonna lose 13-9 more times than i would prefer.

...and our QB put up better number than theirs. But theire defense is #1, and ours is #4. That's the main difference.

But at least we agree, Big Ben's 80.1 QB (17 TDs, 15 INTs) rating and JC17's 84.3 QB rating (13 TDs, 6 INTs) were largely the result of crappy O-lines.

However, since the Steelers O-line is young, it's likely to get better. Since our O-line is old (and injured), it's very likely to get worse.

Don't expect much from Kelly. He is an IR waiting to happen. And it probably won't take long.

However Thomas and Davis ... especially Davis. Davis brings pass catching skills and really decent run blocking ... just needs to learn better pass blocking and he starts at tight end. Instant improvement to the OL. Hopefully he learns to block like Donny Warren and catch passes like Cooley or Jerry Smith. Cooley is the odd man out but he really is a poor blocker. He needs to move into the slot or into an h-back type position.

If they don't we are gonna lose 13-9 more times than i would prefer.

If they suffer more injuries along the OL as they did last year expect to lose some games. If Haynesworth, Hall, and Orapko become part-time players who spend more time on the sideline as opposed to playing in games. Expect that to happen.

There is huge risk associated with the FO's moves. They certainly do not match up to Ozzie Newsome and I think the record bears that out.

WOT!!!? Jurgenson was an elite QB, there is no doubt. But he was anything but a consistent winner. More like Archie Manning in that regard. If anything one can use the excuse that he did not have the supporting cast he needed especially on the defense and for the most part no running attack.

Lesson to be learned? At this stage Jason Campbell looks better than Sonny and Peyton Manning just on the hard stats.

I'm wanting to mention Garrett Reynolds, Herman Johnson and now Andrew Gardner from Sandy Creek High. All 6'7" or bigger. But the one I want is still on the board. Lydon Murtha from Nebraska. Watching those combine clips he blows those other guys away. Chiseled by comparison and can really move. He did miss most of his college career due to seemingly small injuries. OLB..At least he looks to have some street cred..Should have gone OL at 5 and this guy at 6..

I guess on the bright side, there is absolutely no excuse to not draft an OT, RB, OG, C, and MLB (in that order) next year now.

Posted by: TDawg1 | April 26, 2009 4:33 PM | Report abuse

This idiot front office. What's the point anymore? They have no offensive line depth, so they decide not to draft any O-lineman. Bunch of morons running this operation.

They are setting JC17 up to fail. If I'm his agent I am trying to get my client traded. Next year he is gone. Might as well feed Colt the defenses and let them devour Mr. "Chick Crack".

Yo F this... This is aweful. Why couldnt we just capitalize on great first day. Jeez through the damn draft board out the window maybe that way you have a possibility of hitting an O lineman

This guy Henson and Blades are both MLB's. Wonder what message that sends to Fletcher?

Where can I find a good scouting report on this guy?

Posted by: chasgiffen | April 26, 2009 4:36 PM | Report abuse

Maybe we'll go to a 3-4..

Touche, peri. But I think trying to develop MLB talent NOW is a good idea since London is likely to be around another year or two; hopefully one of our boys can step up and be a solid performer so we can worry about O-Line depth next year and a change of pace back.

Oh, and maybe a weakside linebacker to push/ back-up Rocky and his knees.

Posted by: TDawg1 | April 26, 2009 4:38 PM | Report abuse

So, let's see they have chosen 3 linebackers (since we know Orapko is going to be the SLB, he'd never make it at LDE with his poor run stopping skills and that's what the D guys told him. Zorn must be smoking some strange stuff to say he is an LDE after he spend hours with linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti. He'll be lucky to beat our Wilson for that position.

So, THREE linebackers and one cornerback.

I wouldn't be opposed to it, given our defensive weapons now. Prolly a better fit for Orakpo too.

That would be Robert Thomas former 1st rounder of the Rams and Cody Glen if he makes it. I am hoping Thomas resurrects his career after spending time with the Raiders. Blache is a great defensive coordinator but the ownership/management is a bit too much like the Raiders. So, you have to fear guys like Haynesworth, Hall, Orapko, and McIntosh sitting out with too many injuries. But not Fletcher, never Fletcher.

Jorgenson could win a game with his arm. JC can't (at least so far). This draft was rated by many experts to be one of the weakest in recent memory with few standouts. I believe we have a great defense with the additions we have made in the offseason. If JC can't show a little more passion to win, lets give Brennon a shot, that kid I have no doubt about his desire to win. We should have a pass rush this season so the offense should get more opportunities. We cannot rely on Portis alone for our offense. Until we can get a quality younger OL, we need someone who can think under pressure and want to win. I think Campbell is doing better on the first count but I am not sold on the latter.

Just joining the fun. The climate has sure taken a turn for negative town. What... the Skins are throwing away picks???

Anyone know who our scouts are? Surely Dan and Vinny aren't making these selections in a vacuum. Maybe Snyder sits in a big leather executive chair and throws darts a printout of all the available player - just for sh!ts and giggles.

Also, I'd be willing to bet my life that Mr.Redskin21 may own, but does not wear, any pants without an elastic waistband.

And why not make that bet?

I vote drafting TDawg in the 7th round to take over for the disgruntled Mike Sellers, his hero.

why do I get the feeling that other than our 1st and 3rd round picks, Vinny had never heard of the rest of our picks before we drafted them today?

Can very easily see Orakpo playing the roving LT-backer..And racking 17 sacks a year ..

Not drafting Duke Robinson so that we could draft a marginal linebacker prospect who has only played the position for a year, has such good anticipation that he totaled his car running into a truck and was suspended for scalping tickets, hurts. I thought last year that the team passed on the O-Line hoping it could piece together for ONE MORE DESPERATE SEASON. Why not select some promising youth? Robinson was a strong big body with great push, the kind of guy you could insert immediately when you have a lead and need to eat time with your RB. Cerrato gets his quick fix-ations (last year WRs, this year LBs), while failing to see the big team picture yet again.

As a Skins fan transplanted in NE, I've seen Glenn over the past few years for the Huskers. He was the big, powerful running back the past few years before transitioning to LB for his senior season. Not sure if he'll make it in the NFL at LB, but he has potential and could be a solid special teams contributor this year. Still not sure why we are drafting LB's and not addressing our OLine issues.

a "character" pick from a front office that believes character should be limited to the USA Network. UGH!!
