Skins Take a DB

Justin Tryon, a smaller CB from Arizona State (5-9, 190), is the Skins pick. He has some kick return ability but with the abundance of bigger wide receivers in the division, it'll be interesting to see how it works out.

He was Arizona State's top cover corner and was Second Team All-Pac 10 as a senior.

Apparently, Vinny's just not into Booty.

I was seriously terrified they'd go Booty

Only 5'9"? Who cares? Darrell Green was 5'9".

Posted by: PCox | April 27, 2008 1:12 PM | Report abuse

NFL.com sez:

Pick Analysis:Tryon has good feet and is able to change direction well. He could be a nickel cornerback. While Tyron is undersized, he's a good fit for Washington's scheme.

Posted by: SaltyDog75 | April 27, 2008 1:13 PM | Report abuse

Booty? lol, can you say UDFA?

Looks like a solid pick. I'll take a shorter corner who can cover over a taller cover who doesn't have recovery speed any day.

currently attending ASU, watched this guy play for the past few seasons. Little fella obviously but has a good eye for the ball and isn't ever afraid to lay out folks bigger than him.

i like it, but then i liked adam archuleta cause he was from ASU.

The NFL just don't like D guys from Maryland...try to get Henderson, he would be a HUGE steal.

Posted by: Wilco | April 27, 2008 1:14 PM | Report abuse

not exciting at all...in fact he is very small...what about the WVU FB???? get him

Posted by: herb | April 27, 2008 1:14 PM | Report abuse

I'd love for them to trade back into this round.

Posted by: Greg | April 27, 2008 1:14 PM | Report abuse

May have been nice to have traded the 4th pick to Oakland for Fabian Washington (former 1st round pick).

I think Baltimore traded their 4th pick for Washington....would have been nice to have a former 1st round CB for a 4th rounder instead of a flyer on a smaller rookie CB.

Posted by: the_squire | April 27, 2008 1:15 PM | Report abuse

Special teams. Future nickle.

Posted by: Notfirst | April 27, 2008 1:15 PM | Report abuse

I think this is another reach for them.

This CB had a 7th round grade too.

They got great value yesterday, but seem to be reaching today in my opinion.

I think Rinehart and Tryon both would have been there in the 6th and 7th rounds...and the Skins could have used their 3rd and 4th round picks on better prospects.

Not saying these are bad players, just have a hunch they would have been there later...no other teams would have picked them in the round the Skins did.

Who rated them there?

I don't think they reached in the sense that THEY don't think they reached, like I am sure Atlanta knows they did for Sam Baker.

I think they were the guys on their board that meshed with needs of the team.

They may be wrong, but it seems like they are sticking with their board and not taking the BPA that fits a need.

They had a great draft until they start reaching.
If they play great, okey I am wrong then..but why pass on great players for a 5'9'' CB. Only WR he can cover in division is DeShaun Jackson.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2008 1:21 PM | Report abuse

The reaches are Vinny's way of either prooving he's a genius if they pan out or simply shrugging them off as a mid-round gamble. I mean, his reputation has nowhere to go but up.

I still think something must be afoot with Jason Taylor. We just cannot be that content with our D-Line. Unless, of course, the "let's bag-this-season-for-Cowher" conspiracy theorists are correct.

Posted by: Notfirst | April 27, 2008 1:21 PM | Report abuse

You all are killing me especially the squire. At this point of the draft, these players are all reaches. What I mean is that they all are flawed. The best thing to do is to pick the players you think will make your team. That is productive players who fit your team's schemes.

Truly, it's not only anoyying and supid; it's also childish. If you are first here, write a comment based on the post.
Enough with the FIRST sh*t.

By the way, darell was not 5'9" he was 5'9". We need to remember that rarely a later round draft choice makes it big. They are expected to make the roster and be back ups. From time to time there are players that exceed their expectation hopefully this kid becomes the next DGreen.

Posted by: Henry71 | April 27, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

Well he's tough and likes to tackle - that will work. The Skins had to address this position at some point. Anything after round 4 for a CB is pretty much a waste unless your name is Barry Wilburn. The thing I like is that we are adding good, solid football players in each round. We're going to have 10 draft picks added to the mix this year - the team will be younger. The Josh Johnson watch is now on - would be a great pick from here on out... Now that we have our Guard/Tackle I am relaxed. Along with Heyer we now have good young depth on OL.

Posted by: egrib | April 27, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

NFLDraftScout.com sez: "Tryon, at 5'09", 190 pounds, lacks elite size, but has a very good timed speed (4.42) and is even faster on the field due to his instincts and late acceleration...I view Tryon as one of the more underrated cornerbacks in this year's draft and won't be surprised at all when he, despite being drafted late, ends up contributing early in his career as a cornerback and return specialist."

Posted by: PCox | April 27, 2008 1:23 PM | Report abuse

Rogers should play nickel if anything at all. Smoot has been way better than Rogers ever has. I'm actually not looking forward to him coming back.

Backup QB
Backup OL
9th String WR

I think 4th rounders should almost always make your team. 5th, 6th, and 7th rounds are when you take some risks.

There seemed to be value there with some other players...

I'm glad someone else said it. Fred Smoot is btter than Rogers. Smoot plays with heart and attitude something needed by a DB.

Let's get a DE, a QB, and a OT and maybe another corner, and let's go home.

Trade a 5-6-7 combo for either a late 4th, or an early 5th.

One things for sure, you can never say he's not tryon.

Sorry, had to get that in...

Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2008 1:32 PM | Report abuse

Ainge over Johnson as a backup QB anyday. Very accurate, gets the ball out quick, which is very important in a WEst Coast O.

Tryon said he played high school football alongside New York Giants wide receiver Steve Smith, and he's looking forward to playing Smith in the Redskins' Week 1 matchup at the Meadowlands.

Best value at the 154 at this point is looking like a safety or linebacker.

Which WR's make the roster? I assume that the following 4 will make it:

Moss
Randle El

Mathis who we just signed
Mix
Thrash

To the guys who want us to trade our 7th round picks: You cannot trade compensatory picks. So they could only trade their original 6th and 7th picks. Not the 2 picks at the end of the draft.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2008 1:40 PM | Report abuse

They will keep Mix, Mathis will be gone, and Thrash will be on the bubble, they may try to make room for 6 WRs to keep him for special teams, but then when injuries hit, they will have to cut him.

Wilco asked - "What happend whit the draftboard?? This isn't taking B.P.A. They had a great draft until they start reaching.
If they play great, okey I am wrong then..but why pass on great players for a 5'9'' CB."

As fans sitting here in the chump seats we have to remember that our entire information spectrum comes from the media - what looks like a stud to us may not be to say Joe Bugel or Stan Hixon. All we have to go on is what we read - we're not out there spending 18 hour days on this. A guy like Rinehart was rated sort of in the middle - yet there are maybe two or three key words which lead me to believe otherwise - "short initial burst" is invaluable for a lineman - not 40 time. "Nasty" is another word I like. "Mean" is yet another. It belies a certain disposition which I think we can all relate to. I far prefer that to the proverbial "needs coaching" or "takes plays off." So I would be cautious before I slapped Vinny with the reaching label. He actually impressed me yesterday - very gutsy to take 2 WRs and a TE knowing that all of us yams would let er rip - in the end I think he did the right thing. All five of the guys we have right now are going to make this team. We've now addressed two of our needs today and acquired extra pick in 5th. Top it off with getting three guys yesterday who will stretch the field big time and add a certain physicality to the outside that we just didn't have last few years. The thing that made Monk and Charley Taylor great was their physicality - we got two yesterday. Davis reminds me a lot of Jean Fuget who was one of our better TEs in Skins history. Anyone besides me notice how we've upgraded team speed, physicality, and overall athletic ability? I've been no big admirer of Vinny, but darn, I think he's doing well - we're having a very very good draft here.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2008 1:50 PM | Report abuse

So what's the deal with this guy Mix? I want to drool over the upside, and it seems like he's got all the physical qualities that would make him the next Plax. So why didn't he play last year on offense? Was it because of St. Joe's loyalty to the vets like thrash and mccardell? I guess we'll see soon enough with the receiving corps we have now. It seems like cerrato is catering to the needs and wishes of campbell and a new head coach, which is nice to see. The offense will definitely be lighting it up as long as the o-line stays healthier than last year.

Posted by: Unkle Heyron | April 27, 2008 1:51 PM | Report abuse

Vinnie
Doin't take a P or PK or a QB until the 7th round. Get another O lineman and or a defensive player in 5 and 6.

Posted by: oddjob | April 27, 2008 2:11 PM | Report abuse

We will keep 6 WR's on the Roster.
Moss
ARE
Thomas
Kelly
Thrash ( spec teamer )
Mathis ( KR )
Mix probably starts on practice squad. If either Thrash or Mathis have a "slow" camp, then ( pardon the pun ) Mix is in the Mix
