maybe they're thinking of trading cooley.

It is official - there is more intelligent life on Mars than there is in the FO of the Redskins. You have more tight ends than you can play and you add another one?

Been a skins fan since 1970 and this owner and front office continues to underwhelm me. They definitely aren't smarter than a fifth grader.

Well if Mike Mayock said it I guess its all over. though I gotta say TE??????????

Did someone make a mistake when trying to draft EDWIN williams, who is a C. please?

Posted by: sammoMD | April 26, 2009 6:09 PM | Report abuse

lol, the only pick all day on the offensive side of the ball is a tight end/H-back, that's unbelievable!!!!

Posted by: zjfr2 | April 26, 2009 6:09 PM | Report abuse

They are sooooooo stupid and I am officially sick of it. Why waste a pick on a TE that will definitley get cut as he won't make it over Cooley, Fred Davis and Yoder.

Wouldn't taking a chance on a massive O-Lineman have made more sense?

Worst front office and worst franchise ever. Anyone want my tickets?

GO CAPS!!!!

TE in college. How many TE in the NFL are 6'1". He is a fullback/H-Back. This is an Idiotic pick. They have completely wasted the 2nd day of picks. Mike Williams was a major bust as the 4th pick in 2002. He hasnt played the last 2 years. He says he has a new love for football (out of money) and is ready to fullfill his potential. Although this would be nice, you can't count on this. I love Barnes and he will contribute but they have so many other needs such as OL & LB. They reached for a converted rb in the 5th w/ some talented OL prospects on the board and then they just took a TE from Idaho. INEXCUSABLE...F VINNY

Posted by: jwcallahan91 | April 26, 2009 6:10 PM | Report abuse

Seriously, they supposedly like the C williams and they take a tight freaking end again....

Posted by: zjfr2 | April 26, 2009 6:10 PM | Report abuse

Overview

Williams looks like a fullback and plays like a wide receiver. His production (54 catches, 687 yards, six touchdowns) and leadership made him the team's 2008 Most Valuable Player. And his versatility put him on the NFL draft map. Whether it's at fullback or H-back, the versatility of the first-team All-WAC pick could make him a tough player to keep off someone's roster next September. Had an arm span of 31 3/4 inches and a hand span of 9 inches at the combine.

Posted by: mroctober | April 26, 2009 6:11 PM | Report abuse

adam, I'll gladly take your tickets

Posted by: brian71490 | April 26, 2009 6:11 PM | Report abuse

On Eddie Williams:

"Able to contribute as a runner, receiver and blocker...Could project to fullback, tight end or H-Back at the next level...Small school sleeper whose best fit would most likely come in a West Coast Offense."

Still, really don't know how many TEs you can have on the roster.

Posted by: psps23 | April 26, 2009 6:12 PM | Report abuse

So, as near as I can tell, the plan is to "support" JC by keeping the O-line intact from last year, so that we guarantee that the offense tanks in the last 8 games again when the senior citizens start to get tired and are yet another step slower than every defender they face. That way, JC can again be blamed for everything, and Dan and Vinny can have more of a mandate next year to give away our first 3-4 picks for, say, Kurt Warner....

Posted by: Filodough | April 26, 2009 6:12 PM | Report abuse

the only thing that makes sense for this pick is if this guy is going to be a special teams teams contributor in which case its fine since this is the 7th round

Posted by: amsaul | April 26, 2009 6:12 PM | Report abuse

Skins took Te to make him full back. I guess there grooming him in a few years to be Sellers. This may be a way to tell Sellers, about the contact. Guy is big, quick , nice hands,

Williams is projected to move to FB

Posted by: TWISI | April 26, 2009 6:13 PM | Report abuse

Is it really the end of the world if we spend a 7th rounder on a TE?? At this point I think the goal is mostly players that can contribute right away on "special teams".... wouldn't read too much into it.. there will be plenty of unsigned OL once the draft is over

Posted by: skinsfanintampa | April 26, 2009 6:13 PM | Report abuse

Because we have a shortage of Tight Ends and don't need any help on the O-Line?

Eddie Williams
SELECTED BY: Redskins Round 7 (12)

SI Grade
3.02
GRADING SYSTEM
Position:
TE
Class:
Senior
School:
Idaho
Conference:
WAC
Ht., Wt.:
6-1, 239
40 Time:
4.78

BIOGRAPHY: Two-year starter awarded all-Conference honors as a senior after leading Idaho in receiving with totals of 54/687/6. Junior totals included 29/363/3.

POSITIVES: Quick and explosive pass catcher who consistently makes plays in the secondary. Immediately gets off the line into routes, displays terrific concentration, and possesses a lot of natural receiving skills. Adjusts well to the errant throw, looks the pass into his hands and makes the reception in stride. Runs well and plays faster than his forty time. Displays tremendous vision as a blocker or pass catcher, and consistently finds the open space in the defense. Smashes opponents and works hard to finish blocks.

NEGATIVES: Possesses a thin build and just average strength as a blocker. Struggles to handle opposing linebackers.

ANALYSIS: Williams has displayed terrific progress the past two seasons, and he has shown himself to be an offensive threat as well as a willing blocker. His build and body type may necessitate a switch from his college position of tight end to fullback at the next level. He offers potential in a West Coast system that takes advantage of his quickness, movement skills, and intelligent play.

PROJECTION: Free Agent

Posted by: tjzukoski | April 26, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

From what I've read, this guy is a pass-receiving TE, not much of a blocker. Hmmm. Granted, at this point you take what you can get, but how is it possible that the team can keep THREE pass-catching tight ends? Answer...its not.

Wonder if this is cushion for a potential Cooley trade...

Every year we neglect one spot through the draft and FA and go into training camp with a gaping hole somewhere. Then we are forced to make panic trades in training camp(Kendall, Taylor)to fill that hole. I wonder what RT we'll trade for from another team. I was cool with the Orapko and Barnes picks though I just think they should have loaded up at the O-line with the rest of the picks.

Even Mike Mayock is slamming our overall draft.

Do you actually value what any of these guys say. They don't know Jack

In fact, nobody knows Jack

I bet nobody liked Chris Horton last year @ #7

How about Moore @ #6

Or how about Goldsten @ #6

or Montgomery @ #5

Etc Etc

this over hyped process is finally done

now these kids get paid so that 80% can sit

Posted by: snyderbandwagon | April 26, 2009 6:17 PM | Report abuse

I really hope somebody at the Post has the stones to rip this draft tomorrow.

It's been an outright disaster...and Orakpo.

There's no way this kid makes the team unless they cut ties with Sellers. This pick was simply made to make it known to him that if he holds out, he can be replaced. That is an absolutely STUPID way to use draft picks.

6-10 or 5-11 is the best this team will do. Zorn will get fired and Campbell traded or released, and it won't be either of their fault.

I am just stunned at how dumb Vinny is. Even a 3rd grader could have made better picks today than he did. Everybody knew the Skins needed OL, so they go and draft guys who were likely not even on ANYBODY else's draft board and they could have gotten them as free agents.

Vinny makes Matt Millen look like a genius. As long as Vinny and Danny are running the show, there will come a day when the Redskins are 0-16 or close to it.

versatility is the theme of our draft this year and this guy seems to fit the bill. i remember sellers fumbling on the goal line in cincy and being a very mediocre pass catcher so maybe this guy can contribute as an hback in some situations. other than that he sounds like a good special teams guy. im still wondering what theyre gonna do for RT cuz williams sounds like a pipe dream just like erasmus james but in the seventh round this pick is just fine

Posted by: amsaul | April 26, 2009 6:18 PM | Report abuse

Tell Snyder to look at the Verizon Center and the way Leonsis/McPhee run that team as a clue of how to become a winner.

Caps built through the draft and look at them now. Most exciting and best team we have here.

I love the Skins, but they will always be losers under this regime.

Snyder is too worried about being friends with Portis, etc., but that's not how you win. Look at the Pats, Steelers, and Colts on how to win.

I hope Campbell throws for 35 TDs and then tells ditches Skins in offseason for they way they have treated him.

Zorn just said on CSN that regarding Barnes "he was the best player available" at that spot and he thinks he will contribute. Zorn then went on to say they were "sweating" thinking the 2 OLBs they selected would be gone before their pick and they were trying to move up.

Confusing, huh?

Posted by: Lisa_R | April 26, 2009 6:20 PM | Report abuse

O line was high on my card, too. But, I have to give them a B.

Orakpo - good value at position of need
Barnes - a bit of a reach but a need position
Glover - need position, prototype special teamer
Henson - need position, prototype special teamer
Williams - more h back fullback, could be valuable special teamer, possible goal line packager

I hope we re-sign Kendall, as we didn't address O-line. Pressure's on for Reinhart, too.

GREAT DRAFT? Come on dude. Orakpo was great. Barnes was a luxury pick for a team without glaring weaknesses @ OL & OLB. They have swung and missed on day Two of the draft. Not 2nd guessing, 1st guessing. The blueprint of how to win is with D-line & O-line. How would you rate ours?

We could have picked up top 100 (overall) rated guard and tackle prospects and a center in the last 3 picks....

Instead we picked up 3 nobodys that we could have signed as FAs ...We wasted - WASTED - our 5th round pick on a guy rated no higher than 410th overall by anyone I could find and as the 10th worst linebacker prospect (out of 50 rated) in the draft by one scouting service.

A blind girl with darts could have picked better players for us.

disagree with everyone that says the draft was blown when not going O-line in the 3rd round. The pick was a great value pick. Barnes was projected in the 2nd round as the 59th best player in the draft and 7th best CB. No offensive lineman on the board at that time projected higher than a late 4th rounder. Only 7 OL were picked between that pick and our 5th round pick and all the highest rated players that had beenthere in the third were still there. We traded down, ok we got another pick, fine. The run on OL started abpout 5 picks before our pick and STILL the best guys were there when we picked. It is there that we showed again how inept we are, drafting a OLB with 7 games under his belt who was suspended the last 4 games of his only season at LB. He was a tailback before that. Instead of taking a OT in the top 10 or a OG or C in the top 5 of ranked players in their position. I try at every turn to defend these guys and what they may be doing, but there is no defending that. its like they made very correct move and when it came time for the payoff they asked the kid who paints the lines on the practice field to make a pick for them. i give up. Hopefully there are a few players that get released after June 1st we can pick up, or there are some players they already have targeted as undrafted players like The two Tackles from MD.

Really? Explain to me this. OL was a major need going into the draft. So instead, you draft 3 straight players that are strictly special teams? You can pick up numerous rookie FA's to play special teams. Can't exactly say the same thing for OL.

Zorn probably had to have a stiff drink before spewing that Danny ordered garbage. Nothing, and I mean, nothing I've read up to draft day has led me to believe at least two of the last three picks would have been drafted at all. Let alone drafted before the Redskins picked causing them to "sweat it out."

Zorn is becoming Snyder's puppet because that's all Snyder tolerates. He doesn't want somebody who thinks for themselves, which is how we got Vinny.

There is no way to spin this draft as beneficial. You do not take multiple guys on the second day who you only expect to contribute on special teams, especially when you have glaring needs at OL depth.

I will be surprised if ESPN and others give this draft more than D grade.

It makes absolutely no sense for this team to trade an established player, arguably the team's best player, like Cooley. Even if you could get a good player or a 1st round pick for him, this FO cannot project players into the future or the team's ever-changing scheme, rendering trades even when the team gets good value useless.

Cooley will not be traded. Too valuable and too big of a cap hit. Last yrs draft was and will go down as the worst in history. The fact that all 10 picks made the team last yr just shows you how vinny and dan dont get it. Not even belicheck or newsome go 10 for 10 on draft picks. They got lucky that orakpo fell to them and then they completely swung and missed on day 2.

There is no answer at RT. Ditto QB, RB, WR and TE... Additionally, the K is highly suspect, and Haynesworth was only playing well last year to get paid.

We will miss the departure of S. Springs and M. Washington badly, almost as much as D. Frost and L. Torrence.

We're doomed, I tell ya. Utterly doomed.

We tried that once, remember? Schottenheimer? He kicked Vinny to the curb where he belonged. A year later Snyder decided he wasn't having any fun so he fired Schottenheimer and brought back Vinny.

There's no house cleaning that's going to fix this organization that doesn't include Snyder selling the team. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen. He's using the Skins to prop up his other investments. If he sells the team, he's broke because his other investments don't make money.

Unless, they come up with an upgrade at OT via a trade - The offense will be lousy yet again. It doesn't take a genious to figure out that they can't protect the passer. Therefore, can't have a good offense. Period, case closed and end of discussion!

Ugly commentary on NFL network about Orakpo getting manhandled by Brandon Pettigrew, a 260+ TE. How's he gonna hold up against some stellar NFC East fat boys????

Love how names I've never seen in my life show up & think they are awesome talent evaluators.

Sellers..Wants out of his contract, thank you , Rosenhaus ..

Posted by: frak

Sellers does not want to leave the Skins....just wants more $$$ - which would mean a new contract.

Sellers was pretty much out of the NFL until the Skins gave him another chance - and he has answered the call. He mentions how fortunate he is in his interviews but I guess making the Pro Bowl went to his head - that and the Skins paying their free agents so much $$$.

First I get a prank text from JaLaCa saying we took a tight end, then I found out its true.

Then I read that MIKE WILLIAMS IS 410 POUNDS

WTF

HE WAS AT 450 POUNDS RECENTLY? What did Dockery do to get this guy signed? LMFAO.

and by the way, to anyone that believes, as I've read on here "The front office is sabatoging Zorn and JC so we don't have to bring them back next year", WTF are you smoking? Give me one professional organization in the history of sports that would purposely wish failure on any of their teammates.

I'm sure Dan Snyder will be JUST FINE if JC leads us to the Superbowl. Remember that we're the ones who traded a bunch of picks for JC, and remember that JC HAD to be Zorn's QB when Zorn came on board. That's honestly the dumbest idea I've ever seen on here. I'm sure our FO is sitting there hoping JC throws picks every down. Newsflash, if it was that bad and they have it in for poor innocent JC like some of yall seem to think, I'm sure we would've just cut him, traded him, or got another QB. We could've had Freeman in the first or a bunch of people in the 3rd. That's so, so, so, stupid. Sorry, but come on.

and I'm not saying the draft was a success, the second day of the draft SUCKED.

"We tried that once, remember? Schottenheimer? He kicked Vinny to the curb where he belonged. A year later Snyder decided he wasn't having any fun so he fired Schottenheimer and brought back Vinny. "

Totally accurate statement. I've been saying this for months. It doesn't matter how many picks we have (or don't), who coaches us, or who quarterbacks us; when the guys at the top have no idea what they're doing you can't succee. Until Vinny is gone and Dan stops pretending he's an athlete, we'll never really improve.

Me thinks Danny and Vinny may read this blog. They know how many of us have been clamoring for OL to help JC and the whole offense.

Best scenario: JC17 gets himself traded. They start "chick crack" Colt who ends up smashed to bits worst than Ramsay. Then they blame the QB and draft better looking "chick crack" like Sanchez next year. Still no OL but Danny's fantasies are fulfilled.

If I say that I get yelled at and told to leave the blog. Yep, both the Gints and Eagles have had great drafts. The Cowboys drafted a lot of projects ... some potential. Snidely's Deadskins: situational players who will be projects on the defense ... well I think the Terp CB may help a lot.

Maybe the Skins will put together a trade for Anquan Boldin... you know the guy selected 10 picks after we got Taylor "Where is he now?" Jacobs.

I suspect the FO anticipates teams releasing experienced OL to make room for all the OL picked up in this draft. Then, we can get some bargain-basement OTs who can man the position for a year or two.

Hey leevi98....

Its great to see someone still has blind faith but lets review the last year.

Synderrato drafted Kelly/ Thomas / Davis with our 2nd round picks.

Kelly - injury failure like everyone on here said.
Thomas - not a smart route runner and his "burner" speed which allowed him to be successful in a bad Big-10 year wouldnt translate to the NFL - it didnt.
Fred Davis - lots of questions .... now known as Fred "Sleepyhead" Davis...

Consider the Jason Taylor trade... everyone on here said it was a huge waste of money and a 2nd round pick was way overpaying.... right again.

And then there was cutting Billy McMullen our most productive receiver in pre-season ... wow I'm sure he would never have been able to equal the EIGHTY ONE (81) yards Thrash put up for the ENTIRE SEASON.

But sure man - keep score between us and our moron FO .... but this draft is a waste after the top 2 picks. No matter whether you think the last couple guys might contribute on special teams or not (hint: there arent roster spots for them anyway) the point is ... GOOD TEAMS DONT WASTE DRAFT PICKS ON GUYS THAT ARE NEVER - NEVER - GOING TO BE DRAFTED BY OTHER TEAMS.

Our 5-7 picks could have produced a potential started and solid backup OG, OT, C and OLB .... instead we got nothing.

Posted by: mac2j | April 26, 2009 7:00 PM | Report abuse

Kelly or Thrash have got to go now. No room on the roster for them. Kelly probably makes too much money to get cut. So that means Thrash is done.

01/17/2009 - Wolf Pack wide receiver Marko Mitchell failed to impress the NFL scouts at the East-West Shrine Game. Mitchell played most of the second half and finished without a catch. Mitchell had a few opportunities during the game, dropping two balls that hit him right in the hands. He even had a chance to make the game-winning touchdown grab. The West trailed the East 24-19 with two minutes to go. West quarterback Stephen McGee threw a "jump-ball" pass to Mitchell in the corner of the endzone, but the ball sailed right through his hands. The East won the game 24-19. Mitchell also made news this week at practice. Several scouts listed him as one of the biggest disappointments of the week. He's still holding out hope that he'll receive and invitation to the upcoming NFL combine. - Josh Little, KOLO TV - Reno, NV

Honestly who cares about these last picks...it's the seventh round. Let's just hope he makes the team and contributes on the special teams or the practice squad. It's not like we are the Patriots who are smart enough to draft in bulk early in the draft year in and out. I don't think the season rides on a seventh rounder.

These guys did NOT take Sanchez, and yet still managed to pooch the draft. I'm almost impressed by the perverse idiocy of this FO...it's a train wreck you can't take your eyes off of...

Let me recap our offseason so far:

The consensus at Redskins Park - and in the universe as a whole - is that the biggest area of weakness/need is our O-line.

So we spend $150 mill locking up AH and DH on defense.

We accidentally get Dockery back in the fold (thanks Buffalo!).

We sign LB Robert Thomas.

We sign DE Renaldo Wynn

We sign DE Phillip Daniels.

Then we go into the draft and get an injury prone 'tweener to play DE/LB (the 7th DE on our roster) and try to fill a role that perennial all-pro Jason Taylor couldn't even fit.

Then we spend a 3rd round pick on a CB.

Then we pick 2 more LBs.

Then we address the offensive side of the ball by selecting (drum roll) a TIGHT END!

We make a move to address the tackle position by signing a 410 pound man who is too fat to attend minicamp. He's not played in the league for 3 years due to being injured and being a bust.

Update on our current O-line? Well, we're praying for Randy Thomas's broken neck and hoping it won't hinder him much this year.

Oh, Chris Samuels can't get on the field either yet...but don't worry b/c he should be healthy enough by the start of the season to play 3-4 games before his creaky knees render him ineffective.

And to boot, Malcolm Kelly has had 3 knee surgeries since we drafted him...

i dont know why everyone is tripping, so what if they didnt take a o-lineman in the 7th round. you can get the same talent with guys that were undrafted. look for a gem there. they probably just took the best player on their board. i personally would have liked to see them take a tackle in the 3rd but that didnt happen so hit the phones hard and find some undrafted players that can compete.

mac: "Consider the Jason Taylor trade... everyone on here said it was a huge waste of money and a 2nd round pick was way overpaying.... right again."

No they didn't. There was a lot of sentiment in favor of that trade, especially in the wake of Daniels' injury. And Demetric Evans, who now that he's gone is often compared here to Reggie White, was seen as a plugger without a future.

How soon they forget. This happens in politics too, which is probably why we keep getting wrapped up in foreign wars...

p1funk: "The consensus at Redskins Park - and in the universe as a whole - is that the biggest area of weakness/need is our O-line."

What? No it wasn't. The consensus at Redskins Park was that our biggest weakness last season was the pass rush.

It was here and places like SI and ESPN (which pay attention to local blogs because they can't scout all the teams) where the rush to replace the O-line really took off.

Not to say they weren't right -- but the Skins FO never agreed.

Good pick.. In the wco you need a fullback that can catch, Sellers is just a bull... He is a Gibbs type full back, Zorn needs someone to catch quick passes on his check down. Something Sellers had problems with. This give Campbell another option when his first two looks are covered. Plus just having that threat makes teams switch up their pass rush....

So all in all this was a great draft, Smoot is not in the plans for 2010, Barnes is a great replacement, he can cover a bit and can come up a stop the run in the nickle...

Okra(LOL) will rush from the end, pressure is a must, add him and Haynesworth is wonderful... A clog in the middle and rush from the sides... Sound a little like NYs D, Pitts D and B-mores D.... We were 4th last year, this year we can only be better...

Thanks Vinny, Great Job....
Remember we could have traded all this for a unproven 1 year QB!!!!!!!!!!!!
