Skins Trade 5th-Round Pick to Vikings
The Skins traded back to 158 from 150, getting Minnesota's fifth-round pick. The Skins also get pick the 221st in the seventh round, which was originally theirs. (It had gone to the Vikings as compensation for the Erasmus James "trade" from last year).

not an awful move if both Meredith and Duke Robinson are still on the board.
Brinkley was the pick, he's a slow guy and wouldn't have been much help for us IMO.
Could be an okay move, but really, I don't get too excited about picks in the 7th round.
Unless Alex Boone OT Ohio State is available in the 7th and we make that pick.
If we end up picking up Duke or Meredith here inthe 5th, and then a guy like Boone in the 7th, I think I'll be satisfied with this year's draft. Not overly excited about it, but satisfied.

Stop whining, this is a good deal for us. We trade down 8 spots and we "gave up" a middle LB that we had no interest in. We also grabbed a 7th rounder. What the hell are you complaining about?

This trade down is fine-- we all know our boy Morocco scouted these late rounds; he won't let us down.
5th round- Duke Robinson, G/T
6th round- Herman Johnson, G/T
7th round- Cecil Newton, C
7th round- best available OLB or K or KR

I have to guess people don't like his pass blocking, which is what random peeps on WF said.
I think we needed center/guard more than a pure guard, as that player would provide depth now and a replacement for Casey Rabach in the future.
Now, I think we're into looking at projects.
I'd consider Alex Boone (OSU) in the 6th, he was a projected 3rd rounder until he got arrested for being a drunk (yet again).
Get him back into AA, make sure he stays there...it could be worth a 6th rounder.

So Erasmus James was worth 7 spots in the 5th round. Hilarious, it all works in circles. 7th rounders aren't much but gives a chance to have the rights to players we may have to fight other teams for as undrafted FA's.

hey, who was that PR/KR guy I heard people talking on about here as a possible 7th rounder or UDFA?
also, I like the list posted above with Duke Robinson and Herman Johnson, but I'd also like to see us take Alex Boone or Jamon Meredith, both OT's. That's two new guards and two new OTs to compete. We don't have to keep 'em, but some of those were 3rd round grades if not higher. I've seen Duke projected as first, although his sliding so far has me worried.

Why draft this guy when you know he's going into the NFL drug program from the jump?
Posted by: TWISI | April 26, 2009 3:01 PM | Report abuse
Just read this about Duke. Something is shady here with him sliding like this.
3/24 Update: Heading into Senior Week, the NFL Combine and Oklahoma's Pro Day, the biggest thing keeping Robinson out of the first round was his weight and conditioning. However, the 6-5 guard worked hard to make an impressive physical impression on NFL coaches and scouts. He now has the look of a professional football player and he very well could be off the board by the end of the first round and the first interior lineman taken in the draft.

cause we'd be spending 5th round money of him
if he messes around and keeps screwing up, we cut his butt. But a potential first or second, even third round talent at a position of need for us is still there in the 5th? We even traded back to pick up another 7th and he's still there? It's almost a no brainer.

Would've liked Caldwell a lot.
The Bama line last year was probably the most dominant OL I've seen since I've been watching SEC football religiously in about 98 or so. MY memory from then is hazy, but I can say they are definitely the best OL I've seen since about 02, 03, 04 seasons. Nothing from there stands out.
but Bama has a junior that stayed that was just huge, like Phil Loadholt huge. He was gonna go, but for some reason I'm not sure of he stayed. He should be a 1st rounder easy next year.

What I liked about Caldwell, along with the C/G's off the board earlier, is the versatility.
Your center of the future is good enough to help at tackle right now? Awesome.
Conversely, you're not going to draft a college tackle and then tell him to start handling the ball.
