Skins Up Again

You'd tend to think they might look at the defensive side of the ball here.

The D Line and secondary are areas of need. Seems high for Kareem Moore, but more safeties are going off the board. Seems high for Marcus Dixon, too, and I'm hearing he's likely to still be on the board in the 5th round . Maybe the DL Guion could be intriguing here. The LB from Maryland, Henderson, is still there too. Dt Demario Pressley stil there, too, but I could see the Skins waiting on Marcus Dixon next round and taking someone for the secondary here.

Also C/G Steve Forrest still on the board, the last of the better centers in this draft. But that would mean 5-for-5 on offense. And while the Skins would like to add a fullback, not sure they would go this high, thought Schmitt from West Virginia is a bulldozer.

NFL.com's website is a joke. All the up dateing they keep doing is error heavy. I am clicking URLs going to pages in raw HTML.

Josh Barrett from AZ State

Here is what they're saying about Guion:

He projects as a late first-day pick.

The 6th and 7th rounds are a great time to start thinking about Defense.

What WR's are still available?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2008 12:58 PM | Report abuse

Bad Choice for Cowboys

The more and more drafts I go through and the more I pay attention to the Pick number over the Round.

Posted by: Alex35332 | April 27, 2008 12:59 PM | Report abuse

Nicks, or Barrett..I hope

Posted by: Greg | April 27, 2008 1:00 PM | Report abuse

Barrett at S is a great athlete, but questions about his ability to translate that into productivity on the field.

Marcus Howard, OLB from GA, could be a steal. Another physical specimen who'd need some experience at LB (used to playing hand down on the line), but could develop into a dangerous pass rusher.

Orlando Scandrick, CB, excellent 40 time, nickel back at worst, at best could allow Springs to move to safety

Three intriguing guys.

I think the need is Bartett, but will they pass up Booty since he's a boldfaced name in the 4th round?

justin tryon

Posted by: domo | April 27, 2008 1:06 PM | Report abuse

Strengths: Tough and plays more physical than size would suggest. Appears comfortable playing close to the line of scrimmage despite size, can get hands inside receiver's frame and shows serviceable upper body strength. Quick, changes directions well and blankets receivers underneath. Fluid hips, is fast enough to turn and run with most NFL receivers and does a good not great job of turning head back in time to locate the ball. Drops some passes that should catch but can make plays in coverage and is a dangerous open field runner after the catch. Plays with a mean streak and fills hard when reads run. Can get engulfed by blockers but has active hands and flashes the ability to slip bocks in space. Has experience returning kickoffs, has experience covering kicks and can contribute on special teams. Started all 26 games of only two seasons at Arizona State and appears to be durable.

Weaknesses: Never backs away from a challenge but undersized, gets pushed around at times and is going to have some problems matching up with bigger receivers. Short, doesn't have elite leaping ability and isn't going to win many jump balls. Can cover a lot of ground in zone coverage but doesn't show ideal awareness and gets caught out of position at times. Plays too upright, doesn't always explode out of backpedal as a result and can be step slow getting to the ball when plays off the line. While generally wraps up upon contact doesn't break down into a sound tackling position and has some problems bringing bigger ball carriers to the ground. Doesn't explode into tackles and isn't going to deliver many big hits. Character doesn't appear to be a substantial issue but flagged for taunting during 2007 Washington State game an needs to do a better job of controlling emotions on the field at times.

Whoooooah that was close. We almost picked a lineman. Good thing we settled for a 5'9" DB

Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2008 1:06 PM | Report abuse

We got a midget corner. LOL

Posted by: JustMe | April 27, 2008 1:07 PM | Report abuse

Small for my tastes, but a legit pick

Posted by: RedBee | April 27, 2008 1:07 PM | Report abuse

Tryon....

Compares To: TYE HILL-St. Louis ... Like Hill, Tryon plays much bigger than his size indicates. He has very good speed to mirror the receiver throughout the route and has a smooth backpedal, coming out of his breaks with good explosion. If he can ever develop better timing and better hands, he could be a dominant pass thief. He is a bit too cocky at times, sort of like Fred Smoot, and this leads to unnecessary penalties, but he has had good success taking on receivers that tower over or out-weigh him considerably with relatively good success.

Posted by: LJ | April 27, 2008 1:07 PM | Report abuse

Scouts has a good write up on him. Sounds like a good pick een though he's only 5-9.

Posted by: JGP | April 27, 2008 1:07 PM | Report abuse

most of you can b itch and whine and complain but the fact is the skins are having a Great draft

Posted by: Leevi98 | April 27, 2008 1:07 PM | Report abuse

Friends, some things from his NFL.com scouting report that will instantly endear him to us:

"He has very good speed to mirror the receiver throughout the route and has a smooth backpedal, coming out of his breaks with good explosion. If he can ever develop better timing and better hands, he could be a dominant pass thief. He is a bit too cocky at times, sort of like Fred Smoot, and this leads to unnecessary penalties"

Second coming of Smoot, I can live with it.

NFL.com ..he has that bad Smoot thing.
He is a bit too cocky at times, sort of like Fred Smoot

Posted by: Wilco | April 27, 2008 1:08 PM | Report abuse

Think we should have gone with Henderson. There are a lot of questions regarding our LB's health and Henderson may be a really good one.

Posted by: BT | April 27, 2008 1:08 PM | Report abuse

Should have moved up to get Bryant thought

Posted by: RedBee | April 27, 2008 1:08 PM | Report abuse

They drafted this guy to punish people.....he's a hitter.

I can live with it.

Leevi98,

Are you Dan Snyder, Vinny Cerrato, or a relative of either?

Just checking.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2008 1:09 PM | Report abuse

Henderson may be there at 154

Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2008 1:10 PM | Report abuse

They said we are picking guys who fit what we do. Mayock said Tryon fits in our scheme, and that it gets murky in the latter rounds so teams start picking what fits them irrespective of where players are projected to be picked.

Posted by: JustMe | April 27, 2008 1:10 PM | Report abuse

I think this is another reach for them.

This CB had a 7th round grade too.

They got great value yesterday, but seem to be reaching today in my opinion.

I think Rinehart and Tryon both would have been there in the 6th and 7th rounds...and the Skins could have used their 3rd and 4th round picks on better prospects.

Not saying these are bad players, just have a hunch they would have been there later...no other teams would have picked them in the round the Skins did.

Posted by: the_squire | April 27, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

I like the pick.

I'd also like to see them move back into this round, and get either Barrett, or Nicks.

Posted by: Greg | April 27, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

The guy is 5'9, 190. He is not punishing anybody...

That being said, I am ok with a corner.

Posted by: BT | April 27, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

not at all.....but I see the players drafted and needs and june 1st and FAs...I just think most of you b ithc and complain and are a bunch of whiners whom are NEVER happy with anything....I am more positive is all

Posted by: Leevi98 | April 27, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

Only 5'9"? Who cares. Darrell Green was 5'9"...

Posted by: PCox | April 27, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

Pat Fisher was only 5 foot 7. So maybe this guy has a shot.

Posted by: Schoolboard | April 27, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

154 is now the Atlanta pick.

Why everybody passes Erin Henderson.

Dude looks solid. Strong too... top 5 in the bench press among CBs at the combine. Not too sure what that means for stripping balls though.

Posted by: Joey theeeeeeesman | April 27, 2008 1:17 PM | Report abuse

You all are killing me especially the squire. At this point of the draft, these players are all reaches. What I mean is that they all are flawed. The best thing to do is to pick the players you think will make your team. That is productive players who fit your team's schemes.

Posted by: marlonjohn | April 27, 2008 1:19 PM | Report abuse

I really hope they don't trade up to get back into this round. It usually means giving up a pick in next year's draft that is higher than the one you are getting this year.

Cleveland traded a 3rd round next year for a fourth round this year.

I would rather they stay put as long as they don't draft any more receivers

Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2008 1:20 PM | Report abuse

He is right...the REDSKINS are having a good draft...

We can't fill ALL the holes in one draft.

And we always do well with Unsigned Free Agents
