Does this give them a roster space for Michael Vick? I hear him and D-Hall are good friends. But seriously, can he catch a ball? I'd love to see him playing WR. I'll bet he could do better than Randle-El returning kicks, too. Just don't make him a QB.

The little storm cloud over my head is not getting smaller yet even though I'm trying.

Having been MIA I know this has been talked to death up in here with every swinging soul but I cannot seem to get past my gloomy gus view of the o-line for this season. The Q&A with Cerrato didn't make me feel any better. I feel like the whole thing hinges on keeping these guys healthy and when was the last season that happened? *sigh*

Last season after we began our slide it was like finding out Santa Claus isn't real. You kinda know it in the back of your mind but it still breaks your heart when it's confirmed and the magic of x-mas is just a little bit less from then on. . . .after 10+ years of this it starts to wear a girl out I guess.

Must find happiness and Kool Aid - HTTR!!

You consistently race-bait while complaining that others are race-obsessed.

Give the race chat a break, bro': ain't nobody trying to hear that noise with redskins' training camp just a few days away.

You're so black: that's great. Here's your cookie.

No: better yet--here's your slice of watermelon. I don't want you to eat anything you folks claim 'real' black people don't eat.

Maybe one day you'll be a man and learn just how and when to talk race, 'cuz now is not the time.

Now go sit down.

It's football time, 72redskin, shut up all that race noise.

Okay. I have seen a few of the more zealous of fans suggest the Redskins should sign Vick. Some even suggest he should be signed as a wide receiver. Okay, let's think about this. Zorn won't modify his precious west coast offense enough to even allow for more motion and play action. NOW, you suggest he's going to modify his game plan so he can fit a passing wide receiver into it? We have one of those on the roster already, by the way and see how much Zorn uses him on gadget plays. I think ARE threw two passes all last season. Vick is not a better passer than Campbell. Why would they want him if not as a quarterback or as a gadget play reciver/half back? I just don't see the logic in it. Of course, sometimes Dan Snyder defies the gods of football logic...

An indication to Mike Vick's arrival in Washington, say what you want, with the addition of Vick, our offense will be potent. Although not as a QB, Vick can be
used on many formations including decoy on
third and goal, punt return, slot receiver,
direct snap as used in Gibbs era, etc

Vicc,
Dude, you totally missed what I was saying. Your post had a typo where you called Vick a football instead of a football player. I know Vick won games, but that was with an offensive coordinator who was willing to develop his entire game plan around that one player. Zorn wouldn't do that.

Posted by: RedSkinHead | July 27, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

I'm optimistic about the upcoming season. We were 3-0 against both of the teams from the NFC Championship, despite injuries to the O-line which slowed us considerably second half of season. If we had beaten SF, Cincy and the Rams, we would have been 11-5. FO did make a sincere effort to improve, though perhaps not as much as we would like on the O-line, but an effort to improve has been made. Defense will be feared..

Aren't Eli Manning and Philip Rivers in the final years of their contracts?

I've always applauded Danny Synder for driving up the price of football athletes.
1). They deserve it
2). If you thought Price Albert's contract was crazy, wait til you see those two QB's plus the contract of DeMarcus Ware. Ware is at odds with the length of his contract extension. Word is he wants a short term contract so he can cash out one more time while still in his prime. Thanx Dan!

"My guess is that Vick goes to Denver..."

Time for some intelligent chatta about Vick.

If you are a gm, you have two issues:

a. Most NFL teams have somewhat settled quarterback situations on the eve of camp. Is he worth having as a backup q-back or fulltime wildcat guy?

b. What other position is Vick ready to play this season? Is it worth handing a roster spot to a guy who's learning to play wide receiver/punt returner knowing he has little utility beyond either position?

Again: Vick should go to Canada, get some CFL game tape, show folks he still has 'got-it,' and find a team to join during the off season next spring.

All he'll be for any NFL team this season is a distraction.

And that's an issue no gm wants.

http://views.washingtonpost.com/theleague/nflnewsfeed/2008/10/fenty-vows-to-have-redskins-back-in-city.html

Very old post that I stumbled across here on WaPo. Does anyone here really believe Fenty will bring the Maryland Redskins back to DC?

I didn't even see any RI Hamsters post anything? Wassup with that?

Here's a funny reply:

For all the people in d.c. please don't be offended when I say this, Marylanders and Virginians DO NOT want to come into the city for redskins games. The city street system is very poorly planned for handling the number of vehicles attending a game and the public projects that would need to be taken on would probably cost well into the hundreds of millions, new metro, new roads, more police, typically the local gov. pays for the parking facilities so they can be used in non game hours.

D.C. has barely been staying afloat for years now and bringing in a sports team is not going to change that but it will cost taxpayers a lot of cash.

Most importantly for fans, as of 2007 the population of d.c. is around 600,000, the population of the "dc metro area" is 5.3 million, so by having the stadium right on the beltway (like it is now) helps the vast majority of fans go to and from games easily and quickly. I shutter to think how many people who have been drinking would be driving around the city streets.

Point is stop the war cry for a dc stadium, dc is nice for museums and restaurants but bad for big events. And if they are going to stick it between the the ghetto and the wastewater plant like they did with the nats stadium, no thanks!!! I am not a fan of smelling crap while being stabbed.

Don't rule out Redskins in Vick sweepstakes

Posted by Mike Florio on July 27, 2009 11:03 PM ET
For now, it's clear that multiple as-yet-unknown teams are pursuing quarterback Mike Vick.

It's also clear that one of the teams that has pursued multiple quarterbacks this offseason is the Redskins.

And we're beginning to pick up some subtle indications from a couple of sources with connections to the team that the Redskins should not be ruled out as potential suitors for Mr. Vick.

The thinking is that, if he were to land in D.C., Vick would not supplant current starter Jason Campbell, but that he instead would work in a Wildcat-type role for 2009, with an opportunity next year to succeed Campbell, whose contract expires after the season.

If the Redskins truly are interested, it could create an awkward situation for agent Joel Segal, who represents both players.

Then again, Segal might be able to persuade Campbell that, if Vick makes the team better in 2009, Campbell will be more attractive on the open market in 2010, if the Redskins choose not to keep him.

For now, we're not reporting that anything will happen between Vick and the Redskins. But as other teams begin lining up for a crack at Vick, who's living not that far from where the Redskins play their home games, how can the 'Skins not at least do a little due diligence?

With a far less noxious degree of stink emanating from Vick given the incredibly fair manner in which the league office has treated him, selling Vick to the local fans suddenly has become a far easier task. And given that the Redskins are nearly 18 years removed from their last Super Bowl win, we've got a feeling that anything that pushes the franchise toward the top of the NFC will be viewed as a positive development.

Bottom line? The Redskins signed Albert Haynesworth, who is hardly a choir boy. If they can justify giving him $41 million guaranteed, they can easily justify giving Vick a one-year deal.

To be clear, we're not reporting that the Redskins will sign Vick. But we've heard enough from a couple of trusted sources to believe that something could indeed happen.

And if it happens, it'll be happening fairly soon.

Vick is good buddies with Portis and Deangelo, but we've got some good young QB potential with Colt and Chase..Todd has been great under the Schwimmer system, but he got schlaged by Seahawks and flown away in their talons that last playoff game..If we can keep the two youngins , let Todd go to the Rams, then Vick might be a good cheap investment..You people that think Vick lost a step being in jail don't know jail- you do nothing but work out , out of boredom. Unless Collins is cut -- the Skins have neither the roster spot nor space under the cap to sign Vick. He'd have to sign for league minimum, because Collins has a 2.5 million dollar release fee. And it would be very risky as Colt would be the backup QB until the 6th game.

"Unless Collins is cut..."

I say take the sal cap hit and cut him.

I'd do it especially if Brennan and Daniels both seem like they 'get it,' a quality more and more college quarterbacks are displaying at the onset of their pro careers.

Why take the risk of putting Daniels on the practice squad so some team with roster flexibility scoops him up?

Collins rode into the town on the Al Saunders Express, and stayed around even though that 400-page playbook train has moved on.

He's a vet with limited playing experience which makes him equal to a rookie who has youth and a better arm on his side.

The team doesn't need to dress 3 quarterbacks every Sunday knowing only one will ever play: keep Brennan/Daniels.

As for Collins: he's a vet. He'll go find Al Saunders and move on. He knows it's all business.

Bryant article seems accurate if a little overstated. The worst situation would be for Vick to get full reinstatement and then F it all up doing something stupid. There is precedence in Vick's family for this & reinstating him under heavy guidance is the more prudent course.

None of that invalidates Bryant's contentions. This is a executive power move, make no mistake.

I like the realism and honesty.

The skins have a NFC Championship game defense attached to an offense that scores like a South American soccer team: hardly and rarely ever.

Now, if the redskins' offense gets to where it can score regularly (just one extra touchdown per game, people) we have to be real honest and predict 11-5 for the upcoming season.

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | July 28, 2009 8:52 AM | Report abuse

I don't think he'd return punts but I don't think that's a ridiculous notion. It all depends on what he's offered. He certainly has the skill set to return punts.

I doubt that is what he'd want though.

I don't like calling players a "cancer", like some do with T.O. and Chad etc., but one has to worry if Zorn is Lombardi enough to handle the "Too Live Crew" of Vick, DeAngelo and Portis...Could create a fractionalism that only Don Corleone could handle..oh wait, he got fragged by the fraction..

Don't laugh...this team has shown they don't mind moving people from their natural position to shake things up...

If it were not for his baggage I would get Vick and use him at every spot on the field. I could see him lined up at WR/FB/RB/QB/TE. He could do some fun stuff with a screen pass I am sure. But again, baggage.

The more beantown greg say Vick to Skins won't happen, the chances it happens soar....Greg stop!

"Dude, you gotta wake up to the reality of what Florio is...rumors are his thing. That's what his website is for. I've never heard him try to pass himself off as a reputable journalist, he's just a fan like you and I who likes to talk football on the internet. If you want hard news, stick with the Post. If wanna hear rumors circulating in league circles, go to PFT.

Posted by: brownwood26 | July 28, 2009 6:03 AM | Report abuse"

While I agree that PFT is partially a rumor site and think its silly when peeps freak when he posts filler, Brownie you are wrong when you say he is "just a fan" and "not a journalist" Point of fact is that he draws paychecks for reporting from The Sporting New and now NBC. Two obviously mainstream respected avenues of Sports Journalism. I am not defending him per se, but your characterization is false.

I am not pro Vick to the Skins, mostly b/c i think it would be superfluous and a distraction.

BUTT

HoBry is dead on. Goodell is a power hungry little freak. He runs the NFL like a penal colony. He isnt comish he is an overseer. You get the sense the punitive parts of his job give him wood.

Their is a powerful message about true second chances, the role of incarceration to reform in our justice system and potentially a inspirational story....Not to mention PR bonanza here. Let the dude play, let him earn a paycheck the only legal way he knows how.

Anyone here read the Express' review of Danny's first 10 years as owner? Any thoughts?

I noticed 1 intreating trend in Snyder's picks for head coaches, and how he seemed to go for older guys mid 60's, until he went for Zorn mid 50's.

Posted by: alex35332 | July 28, 2009 9:37 AM | Report abuse

Florio is the sports reporting equivalent of an independent blog... conjecture and slant. Scuttle first, confirm later.

I really have no problem with it as long as people aren't buying the cow until a new source with ethics check's her out...

wow - journalism/butcher metaphor is confusing...

brownwood

"...I'm not even sure about the defense. Every time this team puts something together that looks really good on paper..."

I feel you, but with Haynesworth pretty much the only certified starter added to the skins' defense, that's a piece of paper covered with more than just sheet.

The redskins' defense will be fine.

Getting 10-7 additional points a game out of the offense is where the worry is.

"My guess is that Vick goes to Denver..
Posted by: Vicc"

I'm not a great guesser, but for what it's worth, I think he'll go to a team that:

1) is South of the Mason-Dixon, in a region where football prowess outweighs other considerations

2) has a good QB already, just in case Vick doesn't pan out

3) has attendance or ratings problems

4) can afford to wait six games for the guy to be available.

Candidates? New Orleans, Jacksonville, Tampa, Miami.

And Dallas is always a possibility. I think he'll end up as a slash player, at least the first season.

NBC just finances his operation now...hardly means that he's a "reporter". Plus the stuff he does for The Sporting News is that 10-Pack feature and the occasional opinion column. Again, not considered the reporting of hard news. I'll grant you that he's become more than a simple fan with a blog, but that's because he's got commercial sponsors and media attention now. Bottom line is that you don't hold him to the same journalistic standard as the Post or any other publication because he's NOT a journalist.

Posted by: brownwood26 | July 28, 2009 9:54 AM | Report abuse

believe what you want brownwood....I'd make a case the the journalism Florio practices is more in line with what has been considered journalism in this country since colonial times AND more in line with what Journalism is now moving to. The "objective" journalist is a convention of the 20th century without much historical basis or relevance in the 21st century...

but whateves...
