Skins Move to 2-1 with Win

Huge win. Skins take care of business at home and were again superior in the fourth quarter.

The defense bottled up Fitzgerald and Boldin for the most part. Great game by the secondary. Greg Blache made some very astute calls in the game and the Skins again were able to run the ball as they wanted in the late going, beating on a tired defense.

Jason Campbell was excellent and the Skins have only one turnover this season that I can recall - Randle El's fumble on a punt return last week. That's how you win football games.

Posted by: Lisa | September 21, 2008 4:08 PM | Report abuse

A very nice game by the Skins. The difference in playcalling this year vs last year is like night and day. We're also using all our weapons this year which is really nice and I think Campbell has slammed the QB controversy door shut.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 21, 2008 4:08 PM | Report abuse

Gibbs would've found a way for us to lose this game today.

All hail Zorn.

Posted by: | September 21, 2008 4:09 PM | Report abuse

I wish the Redskins still played the Cardinals twice a year! They're closing out games real well this year, something that hasn't been synonymous with the Skins in a long time.

Using all our weapons and even using Devin Thomas. So far, he's been like shooting blanks but I'll allow that with his injuries this is like his third pre-season game. The guy may yet become a player.

Anyone else think the Dallas game will be a real test of where we're at? I think at this rate we'll topple the Gints the next time around, but I think the Girls will be a good litmus test.

CP didn't have a lot of yards today but he got them when it counted. His play is keeping up with his mouth and it seems Zorn is willing to put it on his (and running game) shoulders which allows for those aggressive calls at the end.

Zorn praising Soups big time in his presser. Very big time. "Jason was in the game the whole way. He responded very well to some of the wacky calls and got us into some good plays. . . . he held his hand up and said be quiet coach I got it."

Zorn said about that FG and yelling at Brooks - "We iced our own kicker." That's what it looked like to me too I have to say. Brooks called for the ball even though I guess ref was still standing over the ball.

Posted by: Alex35332 | September 21, 2008 4:27 PM | Report abuse

Folks,

Alot of this is due to good habits that came from Gibbs:

1) An offense that doesn'turn the ball over

2) Players who are sccountable (see CP taking the blame on his stance in the backfield)

3) A team that fights

Zorn has inherited a Joe Gibbs coached team

Posted by: Truth | September 21, 2008 4:28 PM | Report abuse

How could they call that foul on Heyer, the play was still going on! Good win nonetheless.

Posted by: rich20ssu | September 21, 2008 4:30 PM | Report abuse

F-ing toomer. Giants 3-0 first time since 2000; Didn't the win the Bowl that Year. It's not how a team starts, it's how it finishes. Well done DC. I am concerned about our front 4's ability to get QB pressure though. Zorn has helped JC ALOT so far. Keep improving boys.

Posted by: Realness | September 21, 2008 4:31 PM | Report abuse

The team has shown themselves to be where we said they were at against NY. They're a good team and they're playing like it right now. They were at most a good 3 plays away from beating NY and being 3-0 right now.

But Dallas will be, and always is, a good way to show the Redskins' true colors. It'll be good just like both games last year.

I think the Skins are targeted by the refs for cheap shots/personal foul penalties. Look at the BS call against Rogers last week.

Posted by: rich20ssu | September 21, 2008 4:36 PM | Report abuse

it's cliche, but it's more true with a young qb in a new offense.

It all starts up front. JC gets time against NO and Cards but not enough against the Gints and you see the results.

Gonna be tough against Dallas and Philly tho, although I think JC's becoming better at getting rid of the ball quickly

Playing call was nice on both sides of the ball. With about 2min left, they play actioned with a nice pass to Cooley. Most of the cards (and camera man) went to Portis on the right side.

A review of Federal Election Commission records back to 1989 reveals Obama in his three years in the Senate is the second largest recipient of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae campaign contributions, behind only Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn.

Obama's peeps Jim Johnson and Franklin Raines made tens of millions personally in the Fannie Mae/mortgage scandal, which now leaves us on the hook.

No doubt next two are going to be very tough but I think we are standing on much firmer ground especially with Soups.
I think the team feels confident and is playing aggressively so hopefully they'll ratchet it up for next two.
Obviously wins are the most desired but I really want good games where we can walk away from the field feeling strong no matter what.
If nothing else neither Philly or Dallas is going to take us for granted.

[Hey #44 - top 3 guys in McCain's campaign were lobbyists for Fannie and Freddie. No one is 'clean' on this kind of thing. Another game where we had 2 1/2 solid quarters of fubbal on both sides of the ball. That isn't going to fly in next two.

Blache in interview after game said he was not happy with defensive play felt too many blown plays and opportunities so that means practice this week will not allow any kind of laurel resting.

Do we take same approach with Romo as we did with Warner only hopefully with a tad more success?

like this weeks matchup with the Cards... I think we matchup quite well is Dallas... Both highpowered Offenses.. the Skins Defense needs to do a little better job with the deep coverages... can;t let TO get over the top.. and every pass he catched we have ot make it a point to lay the hammer on him... he gets gun shy...

Thomas... still not at all impressed... he committed a couple of Offensive Pass Interferences.. but perhaps a bit more game time and technique coaching will improve his play... I hope so..

Brooks.. again it would appear he made a gaff.. his hold was clean but I think he was to call for the snap much quicker than he did and he threw the timing off... Zorn look very displeased...

as I have said.. not a fan of Campbells... but I have stood with him through all the calls for his head... Play call to his strengths.. let him manage the game.. and he is a very competent QB.. another very nice QB rating.. and mistake free for the most part..

overall...

Offense B (penalties)
Defense B+
Play Calling B+
Special Teams B
Overall Coaching B

I hope they prove my prediction of 5-11 wrong....

Go Skins.

Posted by: Talontbo | September 21, 2008 5:09 PM | Report abuse

Talontbo: I pick in public... (won't say where) and I predicted that after the first five games, we'd know if the Skins are a playoff team... I predicted we'd be 2-3, maybe 3-2 the first five weeks. If we weren't, we were going to be a 5-11, 6-10 team... if we were 2-3, we were pretty much guarenteed a 7-9 season if we weren't pushovers for the Pokes and Beagles.

At this stage, I'd say we lose next week by 4. Which is a VERY nice sign, as we're getting better every week. Remember, this is a REBUILDING year, and we're still one of the top 7 teams in the NFC.... but we may still be the #4 team in the NFC (B)East. At this time... by end of season, where WE get to host the East.....

The schedule makers did us no favors with the heavily frontloaded schedule. But the bulk of the teams, we could go 0-6 in the East and still easily be 9-7.

It was a really nice win, the kind that can build a huge amount of confidence and momentum! Next 2 weeks will be a huge test, but you can't be unhappy with a 2-1 record right now if you're a 'skins fan. Aside from disagreeing w/ Zorn screaming at the rookie kicker for what was anything but a "gimmie" kick, I'm really pleased w/ his progress, JC's progress, the O-Line play, our 3rd down defense, and the running game. Special teams are all over the place, and the tackling is sometimes spotty, but we're finding a way to gut out the 4th quarter and come up w/ the wins! HTTR!

Breaking news
LaRon Landry's brother, Dawan, was injured in the Baltimore Ravens' game just a little while ago. He was immobilized on the field and taken to a Baltimore hospital, but has movement in all his extremities and never lost consciousness, according to CBS.

Posted by: Cindy | September 21, 2008 5:53 PM | Report abuse

Here's the AP story:

BALTIMORE (AP) — Ravens safety Dawan Landry was taken from the field on a cart Sunday after taking a knee to the helmet during the second quarter of a game against Cleveland.
Landry was trying to tackle Jamal Lewis, whose knee hit Landry in the head. Landry lay motionless for several minutes before being taken from the field with the facemask removed from his helmet and his head immobilized.
Landry never lost consciousness and had movement in all his extremities, Ravens orthopedist Leigh Ann Curl said. The third-year safety was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma unit for X-rays.
Landry, a fifth-round draft pick in 2006, started all 16 games last year. He led Baltimore defensive backs with six tackles in the opener against Cincinnati on Sept. 7

any comments on Heyer's unecessary roughness call? Firmly believe he was sending a message to the Card's D to stop trying to kill CP - both two plays prior, CP had his neck about snapped off, last by the guy Stephon laid out. Nasty attitude and protecting team mates... Go ahead, fellow Terp, glad we didn't need the points.

USA USA kicked tail!!! 16 1/2 - 11 1/2

And that was without hands down the number one player in the world!! Tiger Woods!!

And before that our Skins started out so well, up by ten, lost their intensity, and could have easily let it slip away.

But in the 4th quarter the Skins offense came through, the defense made the key stop needed, and then the offense went out and got that clinching first down to seal up the game!

No, we are not SB contenders, but isn't it nice to be 2-1?

Call on Heyer was BS….play lasted another 10 seconds. How can there be a personal foul on a block when the play wasn’t even close to being over? The only rule on that is when you can’t lay out a QB on an int return when he isn’t anywhere near the play……if it had been Heyer laying out a punter whose head wasn’t “on a swivel” it would have been considered clean. I count that as a great play by both Campbell and the rookie, even though it didn’t count. F the refs.

They have 200 yards rushing and there are still ten minutes remaining.

Who else does Chicago have? If he can't step up for that terrible stable of WRs, he'll never play in the league again...

And Peyton Manning is barely 50%.
He is 11-20 and has 2 INT.

Peyton is struggling still in his third game, and Brady is gone.

Actually, despite my gaffe with the defense selection, Drew Brees is bailing my @ss out by having a big day in Denver. So is MoJo in Indy. All I need is for Mason Crosby to get me some points at kicker and for Torry Holt to wake up out of his coma and I'll be straight.

Today, Brandon Lloyd gained one third of the output he gained for the Skins over 2 seasons.

Today - 124 yards

With Skins - 23 games, 379 yards

I flipped on the Browns game to see the guy down - didn't realize that it was LeRon's brother (or more importantly, that he had a brother) - just hope he's okay.

Going out to watch the Packers/Cowboys game tonight - good thing about Houston - Texans fans that do not like Dallas.

dlhaze, Trevor Matich on the Skins Post Game Show totally agreed with you about Heyer. Said it was a terrible call. No whistle had been blown so Heyer thought the play was still going on.

Zorn explained why he went off on Brooks....it had nothing to do with the hold - which was fine. Something about Brooks calling for the ball when the ref was still standing there.

Remember the Keating Five?

Bad call against Heyer. I'm glad the 'skins played well enough to bet the refs and the Cards.

BLLoyD has a 100 plus day?

Jaguars are now up to 236 yards rushing.
Jags lead Colts 20-14 w/ 2:30 remaining.
Peyton still has an opportunity to turn around a very average performance.

I just can't make myself root for the Cowboys...

Yet, everyone, you do understand it would be best for us if the Cowboys win tonight. We want them to be undefeated. We don't want them to lose on National TV, and be going back home to face the visiting 2-1 Redskins.

Ok, I can't do it.... Go Pack, slaughter the Cowboys as best you can!!

Dear Skins Fans,

I gave you guys the win with the dumbest, most nutless call of all time. 2 minutes left 4th and 4 at midfield I punted so you guys could run out the clock.

Sorry Rogers the game ball is all mine.

Seriously how come their is so much gibbs conservative retardation. it is like 10 coaches a week arent trying to win the game just beat the spread. LMAO

Yes!

And JC, I was hard on you, because you choked last year and in game one.

These last two weeks you have played much better, and I need to give you credit, where credit is due.
You are bouncing back, and that displays some guts to bounce back after performing so poorly.

>>any comments on Heyer's unecessary roughness call? Firmly believe he was sending a message to the Card's D to stop trying to kill CP - both two plays prior, CP had his neck about snapped off, last by the guy Stephon laid out. Nasty attitude and protecting team mates... Go ahead, fellow Terp, glad we didn't need the points.

Exactly. Those Card MFers were cheap shotting CP in the pile with WWE style elbows and knees after every play. CP got in one guys face, I think on the play just previous to the TD nullifying PF on Heyer. I like how SH drilled the guy BEFORE the whistle, while the play was still live, and JC rolling right on a busted type play. SH drills the guy who had his head up his ass and was not paying attention. PROPS to SH. Do it again, every time. Its Professional Football, not middle school soccer. (Or any soccer, those guys flop like fish in the boat. But I digress)

Now for the Refs: They SUCKED. D. Thomas gets a pass interference that was dubious; Santana got mugged on one ball with no call; and Carlos gets a flag for Nothing...and you know if the ultimate 'Girl homer Moooooose and his fat assed side boy clown Siraguuuuuuusa agreed, that it had to be a lame call.

Hang in there Brooks, you will be alright. Don't let the haters get you down. haters: This guy could be a near Pro Bowl punter (ie, Top five in the league) for the next 10-15 years. Give the kid a chance to grow past his Professional adolescence.

At the end of the day, good win for the Team, and it was a TEAM win.

Hail.

Hats off to Zorn for his play calling

What a refreshing change from Joe Gibbs

The last two games ended with passes to Cooley to end the game---not runs up the middle which would have left time on the clock.

Go Easy on Brooks--we won--and he will be worth the wait, Also, punt coverage hasn't done him any favors with all their missed tackles.
When/If Campbell could put a whole game together he will be a force. His runs were outstanding and made the defense a little more honest.

I'll settle for one of next two.

Just to let everyone know; no, I will not now nor ever be admitting I was wrong about the Skins. Haven't you read this blog before? Oh yeah, and Vinny and Dan Snyder did a HORRIBLE job today. The team won in spite of them today, not to mention the refs were terrible according to several league sources. Did anyone see how they were watching from the owner's suite? Several bathroom breaks and a lack of quality snacks, as usual. An unnamed source who is familiar with the game of football said, "Vinny and Dan just don't know what they're doing. Many NFL executives have been talking about how there were only popcorn and peanuts in the box today, when everyone knows you need pretzels on the snack table! These guys just have no clue, maybe Vinny should spend more time planning the snacks, I think it'sobvious to everyone that his radio show is taking a toll already."

dude, why does the insider send me a text message letting me know the score at halftime and at the end of the game? isn't it safe to assume that if i'm a big enough fan to want real time texts sent to my phone from a newspaper that i'm actually WATCHING THE GAME!??

Billy McMullen was the Seahawks leading receiver in the Hawks win today (4). Ummm how did Vinnie's WR rookies do? one reception total.
Vinnie's Ego which cut McMullen cost the Skins a top tier WR.

Posted by: JTT | September 21, 2008 11:08 PM | Report abuse

I'm a Skins fan that lives in the Seattle area. McMullen had a pretty good day, but he also dropped one that hit him right in the hands that would have been a 20 yard gain. No big deal against the Rams, but it'll cost em against better teams. Despite the two offensive pass interference calls, Thomas has about 70 yards and a score if Heyer doesn't commit the personal foul. McMullen is a decent receiver, but Thomas and Kelly have way bigger upsides, and that was why he was cut. If Seattle doesn't have three receivers out with injuries, he's not even on the field.

I actually saw and wrote about a lot of hope after the first game. When the skins took the field the Giants were coming off a fan frenzy with superbowl intensity, the Redskins were wondering if they should be in the NFL after thier last two preseason games. The defense bent a little early and then largely shut down one of the better offenses in the NFC.

Yesterday we saw three things that should help us all build some confidence that we are not headed to Dallas for a 30 point blowout.

First, JC looked like he had been there before. His passer rating over three games has jumped over 25 points from his career numbers. If the touchdown isn't called back his numbers would have been among the tops in the league again this week. The biggest difference between this year and the last two is he is actually on his feet- the sacks are WAY down, and despite Heyer's penalty he has been largely awsome. Campbell has time to throw, and he is showing off that brain of his instead of his arm. Nice.

Second, as in last weeks game it is how this years team reacts to adversity. When the Cards launch a bomb and get right back into it we come out swinging. It nearly worked. This team believes they can score every time they are on the field- they believe in the system and each other. While they might have believed in Gibbs system it didn't possess the vertical threat to change games in a hurry. Same goes with the defense. Doughty screws up and it's like- uh-oh- here we go. But Horton comes in and plays a nice roll on the pick play. And Rogers, who some believe doesn't have fingers found a way to catch a ball. I remember a pop warner game I was playing reciever and dropped an easy pass. It haunts you. I dropped several more and was in disgust before the coach could calm me down. We saw this in Los, he wasn't TRYING to catch the ball, he just did.

Lastly, I was afraid the West Coast approach would mean we would abandon the running game as soon as we were behind. Throw the ball 50 plus times. But we didn't. Even though Portis' numbers weren't stellar we stuck with the run to set up the pass. As he tends to do his running got stronger as the game wore on. Betts added several more runs and the run game as a whole kept the defense honest and allowed JC to make plays with his head AND his arm AND his feet. While he was listed as the teams top rusher for several plays Portis and Betts continued to pound away and soften the defense. They WILL get free for big runs, so don't throw Portis off your fantasy teams just yet- he is doing something more important than running 100 yard games- he is blocking his ass off and scoring touchdowns. Thanks, CP, you are the sherrif.

Two weeks in a row we have shut down top rated passers and won games against teams with better offenses.

The key for the next two weeks will be the ground game. The Pack held TO out of the game but Barber torched them on the ground. If we hold Barber to less than 90 yards next week we have a good chance to win. Romo didn't look spectacular. Dallas has a better defense than our last two opponents, so this will be a better test for JC and the gang. Philly will be a different story. They are getting banged up and I think we can pop the top on them. But we need to remember that as goes Portis, as goes our offense.
