Lions win, 37-25, to send Redskins into bye week with a loss

Updated 4:33 p.m.
Fourth quarter

Calvin Johnson's third touchdown of the day was a big one and the Lions scored 23 fourth quarter points, lifting Detroit over Washington, 37-25, and sending the Redskins into their bye week with a loss.

With 4:40 remaining in the game, the Redskins nursed a five-point lead. Donovan McNabb threw into double coverage and was intercepted by cornerback Alphonso Smith, giving Detroit the ball on the Redskins' 37-yard line. It appeared the Lions might have had to settle for a field goal, but a defensive holding penalty against Kareem Moore gave Detroit new life. On 4th-and-1 from the Washington 10, Matthew Stafford hit Johnson in the end zone for the go-ahead score. The Lions converted the two-point conversion to give them a three-point lead.

The Redskins had two more chances but made no progress. On 4th-and-10, McNabb was sacked for an eight-yard loss. It was the sixth time he was sacked on Sunday, and it would be his final play of the game The Lions added a field goal and the Redskins faced a six-point deficit with less than two minutes to play. Rex Grossman replaced McNabb at quarterback but didn't fare any better. On his first snap as a Redskin, Grossman was sacked by Kyle Vanden Bosch. Ndamukong Suh scooped up the fumble and returned it 17 yards for a touchdown.

The Redskins were actually in pretty good shape midway through the fourth quarter. Rookie Brandon Banks returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown, giving Washington a 25-19 lead. But the Lions scored the game's final 17 points.

Entering the final quarter trailing by one, the Redskins took a 19-14 lead 3:40 into the final quarter on Keiland Williams's 5-yard touchdown run. Trying to make it a one-touchdown game, the Redskins attempted a two-point conversion but McNabb was unable to hook-up with Fred Davis in the end zone.

The go-ahead score was set up by a couple of long plays. First, Banks had another strong return, taking back a Detroit punt 35 yards and allowing the Washington offense to begin another possession in Lions' territory. Then McNabb hit Anthony Armstrong with a 35-yard pass to put the Redskins at Detroit's 11-yard line.

Washington didn't get to enjoy its lead for long. On the ensuing kickoff, the Lions had a nice return of their own, as Jerome Felton ran it back 37 yards and the Lions began the drive at the Redskins' 47. They ended it in the end zone, when Matthew Stafford threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Johnson. The Lions' two-point conversation failed, and Detroit held a 20-19 lead.

After Banks' impressive return, though, the Redskins were unable to mount any momentum on offense, and they'll now take a 4-4 record into the bye week.

Third Quarter
The Redskins began the third quarter without their full complement of offensive players. Running back Ryan Torain, who struggled to gain 10 yards on nine first-half carries, began the half on an exercise bike, trying to loosen a problematic hamstring. When the Redskins began their first possession - which followed a Detroit drive ended by an Albert Haynesworth sack - Keiland Williams was the running back, the last active back on the Washington roster.

The Redskins' first possession was a three-and-out, and Detroit took over - after a 31-yard punt from Hunter Smith - at its own 48. The Lions moved the ball quickly inside the Redskins' 10, largely on the strength of Jahvid Best's 20-yard run. On third and 1 from the 7, Washington safety LaRon Landry strung out Best and stopped him for no gain, apparently holding the Lions to a field goal.

But as Jason Hanson lined up for a 25-yarder, Redskins lineman Phillip Daniels jumped offsides. The Redskins claimed they were drawn off by the ball moving before the snap, but the call went against Washington, and the Lions had a first down at the Redskins' 3. After a one-yard gain, Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford found receiver Brandon Pettigrew just over the goal line for a two-yard touchdown pass that put the Lions up 14-13.

The Redskins might have taken the lead immediately thereafter, because Brandon Banks broke through for a 95-yard return of the ensuing kickoff for an apparent touchdown. But Washington's Reed Doughty was called for an illegal block in the back, and the Redskins began the possession at their own 8. They moved into Detroit territory on the strength of two passes to Chris Cooley, but a holding call pushed them back, and they had to punt.

Late in the quarter, Detroit was moving into Washington territory, and a Stafford pass to Nate Burleson looked as if it would push them deeper. But after Burleson broke a tackle, Washington cornerback Phillip Buchanon knocked the ball loose, and Redskins linebacker London Fletcher recovered at the Washington 24. The quarter closed with the Redskins down by a point, but in possession at their own 30.

Second Quarter

The Lions finally put some points on the scoreboard, thanks to Calvin Johnson's 13-yard touchdown catch in the opening minutes of the second quarter. The score was set up by Stefan Logan's 71-yard punt return that put the Lions at the Washington 19-yard line.

Detroit quarterback Matt Stafford found Johnson, and though cornerback DeAngelo Hall had the talented receiver wrapped up, Johnson lunged for the goal line, scoring the game's first six points.

On the ensuing kickoff, Brandon Banks put together a 46-yard return and the Redskins began the drive at Detroit's 42-yard line. Donovan McNabb didn't have a great first-half passing the ball, but his feet didn't fail him. On first down, he scrambled 36 yards to the Lions' 6-yard line -- his longest run since 2007. Two plays later, McNabb hit Ryan Torain with a 6-yard touchdown pass
to tie the score, 7-7.

The two teams traded punts until the waning moments of that half. That's when McNabb, backed up to Washington's 11-yard line, found Anthony Armstrong downfield. The 50-yard pass put the Redskins back in Lions' territory. It was the first catch by a Washington receiver in the game and marked McNabb's sixth completion this season of 50 or more yards, which leads the league.

With 1:04 remaining in the half, Graham Gano kicked in a 38-yard field goal, giving the Redskins a 10-7 lead. The Redskins then launched a quick drive at the end of the half, beginning at midfield with only 16 seconds on the clock. McNabb made two quick completions to put the Redskins in field-goal range, and Gano kicked a 46-yarder to give Washington a 13-7 lead at the break.

McNabb finished the half 10-of-15 passing for 120 yards, but Stafford hasn't fared any better. The second-year quarterback was 8-of-18 for 72 yards in the first half.

The Redskins have had little luck on the ground. Torain, coming off two straight 100-yard games, had only 10 yards on nine carries in the first half.

First Quarter
The Redskins' offense opened the game with the ball - and appeared to regress on their first three possessions. Washington's first play: Quarterback Donovan McNabb slipping and falling for a nine-yard loss. Their first possession netted three plays and zero yards. Their next possession lasted five plays - including a first-down pass to Chris Cooley - but ended up losing three yards because McNabb tripped for one five-yard loss and was sacked for an eight-yard loss. Their third possession: Seven positive yards, but a punt.

The defense, though, helped keep the Redskins in the game. They forced the Lions into a three-and-out on their first possession, and after a lousy punt from Hunter Smith gave the Lions the ball at the Redskins' 47, DeAngelo Hall took points off the board. The Lions moved the ball to the Washington 22 on a pair of Matt Stafford passes, the last to Calvin Johnson.

But on first down, Stafford looked for Johnson again, this time in the left corner of the end zone. Hall was there, and he jumped to make the interception - his sixth of the season and fifth in two weeks. The six interceptions matched Hall's career high, set with Atlanta in 2005.

The Redskins other high-priced defender surfaced on the next possession. After Detroit again moved into Washington territory, the Lions had third and 1 from the Redskins' 47. Albert Haynesworth broke through the line, though, and dropped Kevin Smith for a two-yard loss.

The Redskins did nothing, though, with their fourth and final possession of the quarter, and as the second quarter approached were facing their fourth punt in as many drives.

Rabach ends every play 5 yds in our backfield and on his back.

I don't care if he's great at making the line calls or that he just signed an extension.

He's gotta go.

I was shocked by the rating. The long run seemed to have shaken the cobbwebs. We've gotta have our interior OL play better, establish the run, and convert 3rd downs.

3rd down is where I've been disappointed with McNabb.

Posted by: Diesel44 | October 31, 2010 2:39 PM | Report abuse

haha some of you guys really think that mcnabb is the problem today? seriously? if not for mcnabb, the Skins would have zero points - his long 2nd quarter scramble is what set up their only touchdown, and their first FG was set up by a perfectly thrown deep ball.

The problem today is the offensive line, and if you can't see that then you don't know too much about football.

Skins win sloppy games. Keep it sloppy, poppy.

Posted by: Personal_Fowl | October 31, 2010 2:48 PM | Report abuse

Today? That's been the problem all season. And it's the interior not the OTs.

Of course, but I was responding to people talking specifically about the issues today.

while the OTs may be playing better than the interior line, I don't think you can absolve them of any blame. They've missed their fair share of blocks too.

The important thing is that the Skins are winning right now though, and if they can put together a couple more solid drives today (somehow...), they have a shot

@Karen,

Sorry but it's not worth debating something like that. I won't change your mind.

There are 8529 people on this blog right now. 3448 have played organized football. 306 played through college, 28 had at least a cup of coffee in the NFL, 6 played WR, and you are the ONLY one who thinks a ball deflected 3 feet in front of the receiver and that then reached him at facemask-level 48 nanoseconds after the deflection "should have been" caught.

Plenty would and could have. Not should, however. All I'm sayin'.

Let's agree on something - if Moss's non-catch isn't on Moss, then Davis's non-catch also isn't on Davis. Both were poor throws, technically within reach of the target, but very little time to adjust to the poor throw/deflection.

A bad day for the refs.

A terrible day for the OL and McNabb.

The Special Teams kept us in the game but also was responsible for the loss.

This wasn't a trap game. The Lions are the better team.

Every unit of theirs is better except the DBs and KR/PR.

Posted by: Diesel44 | October 31, 2010 4:19 PM | Report abuse

Might as well start posting now...

It was bad enough for the Skins to lose to Detroit with Zorn at the helm - the Skins have historically OWNED this team. But now this debacle...?

Shanahan and McNabb need to get BIG HEAT for this travesty. Given their "expertise" this is inexcusable. And as far as giving McNabb a contract extension, you have to be kidding...

This team is STILL a disgrace.

like the commentators said.. unless McNabb was injured why take the game (and potential comeback) away from him with less than 2 minutes left? Wonder who made the call to pull him? Kyle or Mike? In 9 snaps, Grossman has given us a turnover and an intentional grounding.

Anyone out there still wondering if Grossman would be better in this offense?

Think the problem is McNabb or the atrocious Oline? WTH was up with TW today, he got owned. THe middle of our Oline has the toughness of overcooked linguine - the biggest bunch of wimps I ever remember seeing play for the Skins.

That having been said, we gave them this game with a couple penalties which turned out to be a 11-14 point swing.

Shanahan just served notice to DMac that you dont throw into triple coverage with the game on the line.

DMac has to get smarter, even if the Oline is comprised of turnstiles and swinging gates. He had plenty of time on that play and he threw the game away.

Hmmm. Made this prediction on this blog a couple of days ago. I hated to see it come true.
Prediction - I figured last week if the skins beat the bears they would have a shot at 7 or 8 wins. If they lost I was thinking a 5 win team. This week, if they beat the lions, they will make the playoffs..BUT.. Say what you want lions 34 skins 17. I hope I'm wrong. If they lose to Detroit there will be much talk about how they overlooked the lions but that isn't really the case, they just aren't that good yet. If skins win, I'll be surprised and will have to proclaim they have turned the corner and will be in the playoffs. But like I said this will be a loss and I'll hunker down for another yawn down the stretch.

A joke for 20 years is right. Worse than the Bungles, Aint's, Buccaneers, and Raidahs...

We need a corporate raider to run roughshod over Snyder or the NFL to turn the team over to a charitable trust - Skins are the LAUGHINGSTOCK of the NFL.

If NcNabb doesn't move the Offense on this drive he's toast during the bye. Don't
have another 3rd and long or an interception or a sack. Redskins mgmt has got to stop trying to improve McNabb's
mechanics. Let him play HIS game. McNabb is
ineffective for whatever reason...

================================

Funny thing about that question is: What if we had used our 2nd round pick last draft to pick another o-lineman, rather than use it to trade for McNabb?

Meaning, our o-line is atrocious because we haven't used enough picks over recent years to keep it from going bad. Trading for McNabb was more of that.

This IS a typical season. Did anyone really think the Skins were better than this? They are middle-of-the-pack. The Lions aren't terrible, were favored, and were at home. (They clearly wanted it more - I certainly fault the effort.)

An 8-8 team loses or wins this game (relatively) close. They lost. That's not a surprise.

(That said, "fix" the freaking O-line and don't switch QBs for the last series . . . geez.)

Posted by: Pookie5 | October 31, 2010 4:41 PM | Report abuse

The refs screwed us. They seemed to call only about half the holds on our defence. Then on that one killer drive. Suspect holding call on Trent Williams, and missed a defensive pass interference on the Lions.

Still this loss is on McNabb, for the interception, and Shanhan Junior, for dreadful play calling.

Then again, Mike Shanahan may have done McNabb a huge favour by pulling him at two minutes. Grossman was train wrect awful, and showed what a good job McNabb had made of coping with a terrible o-line.

Casey Rabach is awful. It really doesn't matter if he is brilliant at calling blocking schemes and reading defences because he is completely out-matched as an athlete.

Why?

We already have a quarterback who doesn't fit the system the coaches are forcing on him.

Maybe someone wants Jason Campbell back so a familiar face can be seen getting up off the ground after a sack.

But we will say that had Campbell not been moved, the pick used to acquire D-Mac could've gone toward a left guard, center, or right guard.

But for now, it's all a lotta coulda, woulda, shudda.

Let's face it: 5-3 would have been ridiculous. 4-4 is still a miracle with the talent level we have. Dumb penalties, injuries to important players and mental errors by our opponents have given us the opportunity to stay in games and even squeeze out some.

6-10 at best. and for a team starting the likes of Rabach, Lichtensteiger, Moore, Heyer, Golston, Kemoeatu...this is a wonder!!!

McNabb must be thinking why does he keep ending up in these situations. He has to take some heat for poor decisions but to get yanked for a career back-up who is turnover machine after masking the weakneses of the run game (only 2 active RBs....what's next - use Galloway) and the non-existent OL.

Diesel44 you up a good point about that pass play. I think KS is always going to be agressive because that's what made him successful. However, you'd think MS wou;d have gone into the 4 min. run offense. It's a growing process, but the team is still in the hunt.

Posted by: TWISI | October 31, 2010 4:54 PM | Report abuse

Well, we figured this was an 8-8 team. And it looks like that they are just that. Glaring O-line weaknesses, inconsistent QBing, mystifying play-calling (that 2nd and 10 call that led to the INT was just plain awful), and defense giving up 4 TD passes to sore-shouldered QB coming off 5 weeks on the inactive list. Not pretty.

And the ST, aside from Banks and Gano, had plenty of black marks. Poor punting by Hunter the Punter. Giving up a big return and having a TD called back by penalty.

Throw in some bone-headed coaching and the ingredients were there for a loss.

Post-bye is going to be interesting as they get into the meat of the divisional games. Only God knows what will happen. We sure as hell don't. Neither do the Skins.

Coaches have to take some heat for game management: Chasing two point conversions - twice - allowed DET the opportunity to go up by a score - twice. Then I didn't see the McNabb pick after the Banks return, but that's what you get when you are passing up 5 (should have been 6). THEN, why go for it on 4th with 3 minutes left, 2 timeouts, on your own 30? You basically give up the FG and force your offense to have to work for the 7 to win. Terrible game management.

The down year in the NFC has given a false sense of hope in making the playoffs.

Posted by: frak | October 31, 2010 5:04 PM | Report abuse

That went pretty much like I feared it would. We're a middling team that relies on players giving max effort, with a few spoonfuls of good luck thrown in.

This week, a lot of our weaknesses were laid bare, and those weaknesses plus some key mental mistakes cost us the game.

Plus, the Lions are a much better team than their record indicates. I think 4-4 is about right for us.

The Philly game is likely to set the tone for our remaining 8 games (I predict a loss). I'll root hard every week, but I think 7-9 (wins vs. Minny, TB & Dallas) and no playoffs is realistic for this team as it stands right now. Half a season in, and there's still no offensive consistency, and very little obvious offensive improvement.

The defense will continue to keep us in games, but will be mostly unable to overcome the lack of offensive production.

McNabb will replace Brett Favre in Minny next year. Skins QB will be John Beck or a drafted rookie. We'll be a 5-6 win team next year.

None of this is what I want to happen, but I'm just trying to be realistic and prevent an ulcer.

Galloway and Rabach should be cut during the bye week. Move Lichtensteiger to centre, where at least be better than he is as a guard. Bring back Dockery and raid someones practice squad for a guard. Who ever we get could be no more of a liability than Rabach.

Halfway to my predicted record of 8-8... though losing to the Rams and Lions was not at all what I expected.

Wonder if anyone out there (p1funk?) still thinks I was overstating my worries about this Lions game?

When Kyle and Donavon are arguing, does Kyle say "I'm going to tell my Daddy to bench you!"

Untenable dynamic between a 6x pro-bowl qb, a HOF head coach, and the 30yr old OC who is his son.

Posted by: divi3 | October 31, 2010 5:19 PM | Report abuse

Wow, Shanahan is obviously arrogant (most successful competitors are) and has made some dumb - from my perspective - decisions, but surely you gotta give this regime a few years, Rachel, right?

I mean, I know you are frustrated (helps if you don't get your hopes up so much), but that's just a knee-jerk, not-smart reaction on your part.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | October 31, 2010 5:19 PM | Report abuse

Rex gave us the best chance to win...guess that means a turnover for a TD. Like ESPN 980 is noting - if the head coach believes that the backup QB gives you the best chance to win is an indictment of your strategy to give up 2 draft picks for this guy.

And Sexy Rexy was a BACKUP last season.

Posted by: i155133 | October 31, 2010 5:20 PM | Report abuse

And since when can Sexy Rexy avoid the rush better than McNabb...???

Posted by: i155133

Makes no effing sense!! Yeah, let's put in an inmobile QB behind this oline, when McNabb couldn't even escape!! Makes a ton of sense!!! Bunch of MORONS.

We needed a touchdown with 2 minutes remaining, let's see McNabb do it. Isn't that why we brought him here? It just makes no sense at all.

Posted by: rachel216 | October 31, 2010 5:20 PM | Report abuse

Of course McNabb blew it when the Skins had a lead and he threw into triple coverage on his own side of the field, BUT...

Down 6 points with 2+ minutes left, you stay with him to try and get a TD for the win.

NOT Grossman.

If Shanny wanted to light a fire under McNabb, he could have waited until after the game (if they lost) and simply said that both QBs would practice through the bye week and he'd decide who starts against Philly.

McNabb on the last drive gives the TEAM a chance. Grossman on the last drive gives the TEAM no chance.

Poor coaching decision.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | October 31, 2010 5:21 PM | Report abuse

I thought Joe Bugel had coached for too long. Now I realise that he hadn't lost anything and that our o-line had even less talent than anyone suspected. Rabach was serviceable for his first few seasons. He is totally outmatched now. Too old, too slow and too weak at the point.

Still, first coaching casualty should be our o-line coach. That was an embarrasing performance.

Now Shanny's relationship with McNabb is RUINED. What a stupid reason given by Shanny. Down 31-25, with every chance to win the game you bench him. WTF?! Shanny is arrogant and has a huge ego. We cannot win with this guy. Him and K Shanny need to be gone next year.

Posted by: rachel216 | October 31, 2010 5:14 PM

Something similar happened to Oakland's QB, but he came back to win a couple of big divisional games and is leading his team to a 10-0 lead while putting up a 118.8 QB rating right now.

If McNabb is the class act everyone says he is, he should respond similarly.

Posted by: Alan4 | October 31, 2010 5:24 PM | Report abuse

Perspective people.

I'm pretty ticked b/c this was a very winnable game.

But 4-4 at this point is a fair record.

We have an opportunity to go into the bye week and tweak some things on offense to better fit this personnel. THe pressure is on the Shannys to adjust.

HORRIBLE coaching move at the end of the game by Big Mike. THe Redskins Oline is getting blown up the middle all day, how do you figure the not-mobile turnover-prone Grossman is going to lead us on a 2-minute TD drive after sitting on the bench all year?

Posted by: p1funk | October 31, 2010 5:24 PM | Report abuse

My guess is that Shanahan was ticked off over that McNabb interception. He called one play and McNabb ran another.

So to show McNabb who was boss, he pulled him.

That explanation about Grossman knowing the 2-minute offense better is malarkey.

co-sign. He was benched for making a terrible read that cost the game. McNabb may be upset, but think about the team as a whole. If any player is not held accountable for a game-costing mistake, the coaches lose the locker room. DMac got benched in Philly for poor play, remember? He responded by playing better.

-The whole Devin Thomas thing. I still think it's personal. Don't tell me Devin was not better than Roydell effing Williams.

-Not playing Derick Dockery when the pass pro is crap, instead plays Kory L who is a scrub.

-Not playing AH in the Colts game, AH again showed us he's a beast.

-Keeping Joey Galloway. How many more weeks do we have to watch this guy do nothing? He is a waste of a roster spot.

-And today, benching McNabb when all you needed was a TD. And then later trying to bullsh** us by saying Rex is better in the 2 minute situation. You brought in McNabb to win games like this for you so why the F would you bench him for Grossman, an inmobile QB? If he was so much better than make him your starter, idiot. Seriously... It wasn't completely his fault, he was getting killed by pressure (like ALL F***IN DAY) and threw into a planned route when out of the blue , defenders suddenly appeared...But that game was rigged for the Lions , NFL management isn't that smart, they figured the Redskins game at home for the Lions at this time would be important for the half-empty Lions stadium like last year...Bush's Rangers will win tonight for Fox, also..f*** you..

We were out-coached; both HC and OC didn't do their jobs effectivly. DM5 can't
do what he does best b/c he isn't allowed
to do so. He's subordinate to a young OC who thinks he knows stuff better than an established QB who has been in the league over a decade. Poor, very poor, play-calling, and poor personnel choices at the end of the game. The bye week, Monday night against Philly, and we have a QB controversy? In week 9??? This points to a management problem...

Leakenmaster doesn't need to be on the field, Rex Grossman sure as hell can't avoid a rush better than DMcNabb, knowledge of terminology of a 2-minute offense be damned.

Rabach is gargage.

Shanaman has brought a level of competency to this team that surely wasn't there last year, but his ego, arragonce, and favoritism when it comes to personnell decisons are undermining this team.

Kyle's play calling is questionable, and once again, Mike ShanaMan is full of BS, his lame azz comments in his press conference make me want to smake him in his no lip mouth.!!!

Of course it is, especially since this team has been in 2minute offense several times this season already - and we've never seen Rex come off the bench before.

I'm not concerned about how McNabb will respond - whether he'll lose it or be a pro - my concern is about how SHanny will respond.

Bright side: Brandon Banks is big enough to play in the NFL. I thought he would be a fumble machine. I was wrong. Hopefully this means our front office will recognise the value of speed and not worry too much on whether it comes with ideal size.

Keiland Williams did ok, considering just how poor the inside of our line was playing. There were some errors in pass-pro, but there was some promise.

Landry continues to play well and Haynesworth got a decent amount of playing time.

Gano hit his kicks.

Team-wise: Dockery needs to come back, desparately. In spite of my earlier overreaction, McNabb, as bad as he's been, is leaps and bounds over Rex, so for this season, I think we have about as good as we're going to get. OLine and DLine are the real problems.

Posted by: skinsfan713 | October 31, 2010 5:46 PM | Report abuse

I'll be better tomorrow Stevie.. I think... I wouldn't be so mad if McNabb stayed in, I wouldn't of cared if he threw a pick 6 at the end. I'm just baffled by the decision to put in Rex. I wouldn't be acting this crazy if McNabb was in there.

But the truth is Shanny wanted this year to be a contending year, but that's just not gonna happen. This team has way too many holes. The oline is by far the worst in the entire league. No questions asked. That needs to be addressed before anything else. We only have 3 good recievers. We need a WR like Calvin Johnson. We need a lot more but I don't want to go on, it's too sad.

Agreed. I also think that if in those situations they throw, McNabb should look to move the chain first instead of looking for the big play first to get/stay in rhythm offensively. Once they self scout over the bye, O think this offense will get into better rhythm.

Totally agree. After the first game that Dockery was made inactive, the media has not questioned Shanahan about this. Instead, they keep harping on Haynesworth. Now for 2 solid weeks we are gonna have hear about the McNabb benching. Hasn't Shanahan learned by now how ravid the media is in DC about things like that?

We need a GOOD explanation about Dockery - stupid Shanahan doesn't even allow him to dress!

At least all the folks calling for Rexy got to see what awaits them if he starts. ZERO pocket awareness. I know McN wasn't showing much, but fumbling on your first play? Come on.

I'll give Shanny a pass if he says Rex is better at the 2 minute, but he needs to keep Dock active for games just like this when the rb goes down and we have to pass. Lichty is better at run blocking, but he and Rabach are a joke at pass pro. Hicks too.

Jeez, we only need four new O lineman for next season.

We knew that going in. They did add Brown, Williams and Hicks. It obviously wasn't enough (Williams was overmatched today but he's been about as good as one can expect from a rookie).

Shanahan does make some odd moves. Two RBs?

To be fair, we need to at least give him 3 years.

Alright, Lets put everything on blast. The offense didn't move the ball well at all except with BBanks gave them big returns THATS IT!! He even gave us a TD today, should have been 2 thanks to RD. The offensive line is HORRIBLE!! C, LG and RG are all terrible. Lictenseigner or whatever the H*LL his name is, should be INACTIVE on gameday. Dockery should start period. F Shannhan and his favoritism. That left side of the line was doing good when DOC was playing. Now they are famous for giving McNabb pressure from his blind side. Yes McNabb has some off target throws and that pick, but he's known for being off target. He was throwing the ball late all day and thats why the pick actually happened. Galloway should be cut immediately. He doesnt defend his QB on throws and he doesn't catch passes except at garabage time. Casey Rabach is garabage as well. Been should have replaced him.
For the defense,
Haslett keeps playing his corners soo far off at the goal line that it a guaranteed TD on quick slants! You don't let ONE MAN beat you. They let Calvin Johnson BEAT THEM TODAY!!! Defense has some stupid mistakes in the encroachment penalty on the field! Defense didn't give up as many yards today, but they give up points instead! They were almost always defending the short field because of ST mistakes!! They had 2 turnovers but the offense didn't capitalize on them.
Bright spots: BBanks is scaring teams and they are starting to kick away from him. AArmstrong has been showing up. Haynesworth is finally playing the roll he should have been in the first place.
Worries: Shannhan actually makes Grossman the starting QB after the bye would be the DUMBEST thing and if he does, I WOULD FIRE HIM ON THE STOP!!! You dont give up 2 draft picks for a ALL PRO QB to bench him for a BUM!!!

Ruminations after losing to the Lions, Part Duh.

This game was lost on four actions by the Redskins. Each were deadly.

1. The Lions were kicking a field goal; some bonehead player for the Redskins committed a penalty that resulted in a Lions' touchown leter. This player also committed another bonehead penalty and should be kicked off the team despite his longevity with the team.

2. McNabb's interception with about 6 minutes left in the game while leading. I can't explain his repugnant stupidity at times. I really can't. Triple coverage and he throws the ball instead of running it.

3. The decision to go with Grossman who will never be mistaken for Peyton Manning. In fact Grossman is not even as good as Jason Campbell. He showed how much he knew about the system with his clydesdale footwork avoiding the pass rush.

4. Coaching. Obviously the offense is hell-bent on not utilizing their players to the best; Joe Gibbs learned this in 6 games. To date the Brood of Shanny is trying to showboat. It is obvious that McNabb doesn't like this system and plays take years to develop.

There are more but blaming the refs for blowing two obvious face mask calls and one block in the back on the Lions 71 yard kickoff return would just be whining when it is obvious the Redskins let another inferior team look like a Super Bowl Champion.

Looks like you're here too... but without substance in your postings.

To my point...

Crap play calling notwithstanding, there was no discernible game-plan adjustment by the Offensive Coordinater, at half time, for a porous Oline that had already allowed the QB to be sacked 4 times. A quicker snap count was all Kyle could come up with.
