Someone asked about the other assistants

So Jason Reid made some calls and reports: Washington Redskins linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti, whose contract was set to expire this week, has signed an extension and is among the assistants expected to remain with the team, league sources said Saturday.
Williams and Saunders have been released, but management hopes to retain the majority of former coach Joe Gibbs's staff, according to sources. Olivadotti, 33, is highly regarded by Williams and former defensive line coach Greg Blache, who has been promoted to lead the Redskins' defense.
Despite his relative inexperience, Olivadotti's ability to identify opponents' tendencies and provide tips for Redskins defenders has helped to make him a key contributor on a coaching staff among the league's most experienced. Olivadotti also is popular with players.
UPDATE 1: Jason LaCanfora reports that the Rams and Raiders have asked the Redskins for permission to speak with Saunders about jobs and the Rams and Titans have asked for permission to speak to Williams about jobs, sources said. Apparently, teams still must do this because the two remain under contract.
Updating Update II: Jason Reid now reports that the new head coach will decide the fate of assistant Bill Lazor, who coached the team's quarterbacks, sources said. Earlier, it was believed that Lazor had been let go.
Lazor worked with Washington's quarterbacks the last two seasons. He developed a strong relationship with young quarterback Jason Campbell, whose development is a top priority for the organization.
Before joining the Redskins, Lazor spent the 2003 season as an entry-level assistant with the Atlanta Falcons. Lazor was a record-setting quarterback at Cornell.

We blew this up to hire Jim Zorn??? And get rid of the most respected guy on the entire staff?

I hated that Snyder never beat Dallas. Then Gibbs came back. Now Snyder won't beat Dallas again. But I'm more than OK with Jerry Jones b!tchslapping little Danny boy around 2x a year.

Would love to see Danny eat it with an 0-16. Season tix waiting list gone. 6 flags dying ... and Danny in bankruptcy. Might as well have his bankbook equal his dignity.

So much for 40 years of loyalty ....

I'm a bit surprised Danny Smith stayed on-board, though I'm glad he's staying. I always thought he was loyal to Gregg Williams.

At least the Defense for the most part should stay the same and running the same 4-3 scheme. I like Gregg Williams, but he was never proven to be a good HC. Our offense did need work, and maybe a new scheme will do better. Gibbs is great but played not to lose in the second half of games. How many games did we blow in the 4th qtr? Zorn is not too bad, and has some good experience. We have some good players to build on, and getting thomas and jansen back will help! HTTR

Posted by: poulosjoe | January 26, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

Anyone making predictions for Skins' mocks given everything?

1st- DE (best available)
2nd- WR (best available, hopefully James Hardy)
3rd- DT
5th- QB
6th- LB
7th- OG

And I think we'll pursue Asante Samuels, Alan Faneca, and Lance Briggs in the off-season.

Posted by: TDawg | January 26, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

you'll ever need more of an indication that Danny will hire nothing but a yes man for the head job than this, It would be one thing to move Williams up to the head job and ask him to keep the same staff (which he likely would have at least on defense).

But to bring in random folks as coordinators and force a head man to accept them...well, that guy would have to be neutered. I give you Jim Fassel...

Posted by: b_standig | January 26, 2008 3:27 PM | Report abuse

"NOw you are getting it....Everyone thinks this team was not going to be overhauled magically if Williams was made coach."

I partially agree with you on this, but here's the thing: the PLAYERS wanted to play for Williams and endorsed him as HC.

Did they have issues on offense? Yes.

Did they have issues on Defense? No.

But they fired both coordinators.

Now you're going to have to cut players, fill holes, AND learn ALL new scheme's IE - blow up the "team" that Gibbs worked so hard to make.

The Redskins were a TEAM at the end of the season, we could all see it. And now all of that is gone.

You can forget them going after A. Samuel, they won't have the money to do it. Here's the cap figures for next year:

http://www.thehogs.net/washington-redskins/salary.php

Lots of "zeros" on the right margin that do not count for next years cap $129,734,000. So now players have adjust salaries or get cut. Maybe they would have been willing to for "team," but not now.

"Hi, I'm Dan Snyder. Can I have some of my money back?"

So much for continuity, that just went out the window.

Then you want to hire a loser like Fassel as HC?

Oh please.

You keep the guys you have(including coaches), tweak the offense, and make another run at it. But Snyder just can't do that, his ego is SO large that he has to try and prove everyone else wrong.

"Gregg Williams looked at me funny, I'm gonna fire him! Waahhh!"

Oh wait, it gets better! Cerrato is now in charge of everything! He's Leprechaun Danny's personal choice! I hear he got collagen injections in his lips just for the occasion.

This is what everyone is upset about, it's not just one thing. The truth always comes out, and in this case it's Dan Snyder has no clue wtf he's doing.

Please sell the team Leprechaun Danny, you have no clue and never will. You are personally killing the Washington Redskins.

For those of you who have been following, Danny's radio ventures, Red Zebra, have been tanking as well. He lost his entire senior management (some of them were arrested out-of-state for allegedly beating up women) and the ratings and signal strength are still pathetic.

Point is - he's no treat to work for. I'm just amazed he lets Riggins speak his mind as much as he does.

Hasn't Blache technically been titled Defensive Coordinator, w/ Williams having been the Associate Head Coach-Defense? So, theoretically, couldn't a new head coach other than Fassel bring in his own associate head coaches? That may well be what Snyder is thinking here, thus not handcuffing Spagnuolo or McDaniels (especially if it's true, as someone said on here earlier, that Blatche didn't really want to be the true defensive coordinator (although I have no idea as to the truth of that)). Either way, though, it doesn't look too good.

Posted by: A_Fly_Moses | January 26, 2008 3:40 PM | Report abuse

So what exactly will the role of head coach be, fall guy if this all goes bad? It plain to see now that Snyder wants total control over everything. So are players even going to respect the coaches or are they just going to go whine to Snyder whenever they aren't getting enough playing time?

Remember the good ol' days, when players would renegotiate their contracts for the good of the Skins team? Players like Darrel Green stayed with the Skins for less money because of team loyalty?

Gibbs persuaded Riggo not to sit out the season; people trusted Gibbs. Even in Gibbs 2.0, you heard players saying they felt like the let Coach Gibbs down.

Those days are gone. What do you think defensive players will say when Dan gives a speech about team loyalty?

Will a new HC plucked from somewhere else be able to talk credibly about "team loyalty", "Redskins football", or refer to how "we've gotten through tough times together before"?

Nope. Any appeals to loyalty, Skins football, or getting through tragedy together have now been flushed.

Posted by: Alan4 | January 26, 2008 3:49 PM | Report abuse

One thing that amazes me, some of these
jack a's are saying that GG was was not a proven HC. Well who the heck is that has had an interview so far? Fassel! I guess some people believe in the BOY KING and you would have to be a real DA for that

Posted by: jmh764 | January 26, 2008 3:52 PM | Report abuse

You don't even know if the HC is going to be an offense guy or a defense guy. Which means the coordinators don't even know their roles.

Will Zorn call plays? Will Blache call defenses? They don't know.

When guys say yes to a job, and don't even know what it is, they are foolish.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | January 26, 2008 3:52 PM | Report abuse

What an improbable turn of events! 2 weeks after Gibbs retires, we're wondering if we will be playing a Rams team sporting both of our coordinators!!! Inconceivable!!!!!

Could you imagine how soaked the front of Al's shirt must be with drool at the prospect of running his offense with the likes of Marc Bulger and Steven Jackson? They have the same issues as us on the O-line, but if they shore it up, they've got a nice match in Al. Don't know if Gregg really wants to be with Al any more, but revenge makes strange bedfellows I spose.

Just because Snyder keeps us and the media in the dark doesn't mean he isn't telling them what is going on. If these are truths or lies is a completely different matter. I'd bank on lies.

Posted by: cdubb | January 26, 2008 3:58 PM | Report abuse

After all the talk of continuity, they will be playing in two new schemes next year. This will inevitably lead to major personel changes on both sides of the ball, as well as changes to both the offensive and defensive coaching staffs. What about this scenario points toward continuity?

Snyder bandwagon

Since everyone hates Snyder and loves to dump on him, I'm here to set things straight.

First.....Joe left on his terms.

second....what makes you super smart folks think that Williams is the man.I agree that he deserves a shot, but what the hell do we know.

third....sanders is from Kansas city and only came here to coach for Joe.Joe is gone. From a stability standpoint, Maybe the feeling was that he didn't really want to be here.he is now talking to the Rams.

Fourth......Gregg Blatche provides that defensive stability and he will keep most of the coaches on that side of the ball.how about those apples Sally Jenkins.

Fifth......Zorn is an innovative coach that will breath life into a stale and mostly unproductive offensive unit.

sixth.....I personally email JC to write about Vinny and give him his due on the Quality of picks. Our issues have been with the quanity, not the quality.Vinny has done an exellent job and now we need to keep out picks and not trade them away.Under Vinny, we have had 5 top ten picks.Three went to pro bowls and I believe Laundry will follow. That means ZERO busts.

seventh......Sally Jenkins is a prude! Snyder is growing nicely into his position of owner/GM. Get over the past mistakes guys.He has learned from Gibbs and look at how he is handling this verses the past. Our little danny is growing up.

Eighth.... as an owner he cares because he is also a die heart fan, just like us.He will do everything in his power to bring us a winner.Look at this team....We will still be set on defense and the Offense will get new life.We have 6/7 of our draft picks and you know they will go out and add some more talent.

Ninth..... I realize that it can be frustrating because we all want to win so bad.We are all just fans and really don't know anything. This team is going in the right direction and Dan Snyder will get it right. But let's say we take a step back this year.Is it fair to blame it on Snyder?
We just lost the greatest coach in our teams history and he can't be replaced.Give Snyder a break and let this process play out.

Go skins

We had a great ride during the 80s and early 90s. We were spoiled by a winner and great PEOPLE. Those people were true Redskins.

Here's to the fun bunch, Art, DGreen, the hogs, Mann, Manley, Butz, Grant, Ryp, Doug, EB, Gary, Ricky, BMitch (the original Dirty-30), Jason Buck, Jumpy, Stokes, the Smurfs, Riggo, and everyone from the good days. They're over now, and if we are to stay on board, we'd better get used to this.

I'll cherish the memories always, but this is not continuity; it's pathetic lunacy. I'd love to hope for the best, but HOPE is clearly not a method; I probably need to get on to more important things on Sunday afternoons anyway.

I don't want to pick apart your post, but surely you don't think keeping his coaches in the dark until rumors started flying is handling things well... seems to me, if he learned from Gibbs he would be listening to Gibbs advice... and for some reason, Gibbs told Williams to stay in the HC derby 3 times this week... next years secondary is basically already on the team. landry, smoot, springs. even if springs doesnt renegotiate, 7 mill for a corner of his caliber is a decent price, and landry and smoot are locked up for multiple years. we need a new fs to put landry back at his natural position or we need a new SS to keep landry where he shined at the end of the year. the team needs some depth for the nickel and dimes but there are some promising youngsters already here. i still think theyll make a play for assante samuel but i dont think they need to, some lesser known corners can be had to fill in the gaps. overall the secondary is still a strong part of the team

Would you take a job having no clue as to the most important aspect of it, your boss. Zorn was one of the guys Fassel wanted. I think Snyder is going to wait and interview Spagnuolo to see if he could mesh with Blache and would be ok with letting Zorn run the offense. If that doesn't work out he will fall back to Fassel. Just my opinion at this point but none of us know what will happen for sure.

And honestly I don't think Snyder gives a damn what the media or fans think. It is obvious in his passing over of Williams. He has been getting trashed by both for years. His dealing with the death of ST was the only positives I have ever heard about the guy.

Continuity, thy name is Greg Blache. Apparently. And Olivadotti, and whoever else they keep. I'm guessing that most of the D staff stays in place with Blache as DC, unless the new HC comes in and starts whispering in Snyder's ear.

As for the offensive position coaches...who the heck knows?

Do you suppose we could convince Blache to add an extra G to his first name? I'm going to miss that extra G. I hope GG goes to the Titans and kicks some butt with his best friend. I'd be happy for him.

I heard a rumor that Snyder is in talks with IBM to lease Deep Blue as our new HC. Apparently IBM is hesitant due to fears about exuberant players bearing Gatorade buckets.

The way Landry played at FS I should think we'd want to keep him there. GW was right in going for someone with blazing speed to play there.

It's also great to have someone with blazing speed at SS, but you're not going to draft such a one this year. And Doubty played just fine, I thought. But you know who has really good speed? Leigh Torrence. Perhaps they try him there, though you have to like him at nickel.

This from the 2002 profootballweekly archive.
The question was, Who is the asst. coach of the year?

Jeff Agrest/Senior editor

Bears defensive coordinator Greg Blache

Greg Blache has a great chance to become an NFL head coach someday. His defense is one of the best in the league, he's schemed his players very well and he's an outstanding motivator. Though the Bears have ranked near the bottom of the league in passing yards allowed, that's mainly because only the Packers have been able to run on them. Still, the Bears haven't given up a lot of big plays through the air, and Blache has turned up the heat to make up for a defensive line that's lacking in the pass-rush department. This is where Blache deserves the most credit. He's blitzed from all over the field, using linebackers, safeties and cornerbacks. Of course, it helps that he has some top-notch talent, but Blache has put his players in position to succeed. He's used OLB Rosevelt Colvin, a rush end in college, as an end in the nickel. He's kept stud DTs Ted Washington and Keith Traylor fresh. And if you've ever spoken with Blache, it's a good bet he could have had you running through walls by the end of the conversation. He's kept his players focused, motivated and on the same page. It's rare to see a breakdown in the Bears' defense.

I cannot stand the way in which Danny runs this organization, but I think Zorn and Blache will be good. I've noticed young OCs tend to be less dogmatic about running a certain system and better at adapting to current personnel. But if the (eventual) head coach has had no say in these hires, what a bassackwards way of doing things. No surprise there.

Clearly Gregg wanted control in personnel OR a good GM. The multiple meetings says to me they tried to work it out, but Snyder, stupidly, wants to keep his hand in the toybox. Parting ways 3 weeks ago, instead of drawing it out, did nobody any good. Gregg can't wait forever while all the DC jobs get taken.

Josh McDaniels? OC for one year, dubious HC credentials. Never hire anyone who they themselves say they may not be ready for an HC job.

Best scenario: Grimm, learned under Cowher, Skins trueblood

Make the fans happy, DannyBoy!

PS. If you feel strongly enough about this to ditch your season tickets, etc. you are a true Skins fan.
If you still will root for the team and go to games, etc. you are a true Skins fan. Don't let the DanMan divide us!

Last year Bill Parcells retired from the cowboys and Jason Garret was name in charge of the offense then Wade PHILLIPS Was hired as head coach.
They 13 and 3 and choked in the playoffs.
They Redskins have the talent. They just need the right guy for the job to get them to the next level.

If you look at where we fall in the first round, an OT would be the best fit, given need vs. talent available.

tjzukoski --

Gregg is still under contract to the Redskins. If he wants to sign with another team, he needs the 'Skins permission. That sounds to me like the 'Skins can ask for some sort of compensation (unless he's the head coach). Jasno had earlier said that the 'Skins might try to work a trade with Tennessee to get Schwartz.

And, why would Schwartz want to play second fiddle to Gregg? I don't care what title you give Gregg, you know he's responsible for the defense.

talent_evaluator,
I think the Redskins let him go. They may get a 7th rounder. I think SCHWARTZ STAYS WITH HIM because Williams was his mentor. Its highly unlikely to trade coaches.
I think Williams and Fischer are boys and Williams has a home there and it will help him get a head coaching job if the Titans defense gets better if he is there.

Posted by: tjzukoski | January 26, 2008 4:42 PM | Report abuse

And honestly I don't think Snyder gives a damn what the media or fans think. It is obvious in his passing over of Williams. He has been getting trashed by both for years. His dealing with the death of ST was the only positives I have ever heard about the guy.

Posted by: cdubb | January 26, 2008 04:23 PM

Well, I think Snyder's going to make a lot of fans happy next season with the changes he's making now! Unfortunately, those will be fans of the Cowboys, Giants, and Eagles.

It was nice to see the Skins finally start taking down some of their divisional foes on a regular basis over the past few years. Next year, with some stability along the O-line, less hammies & groins at the speed positions.... I think this team was really starting to "get" how to win NFC East games.... that's the key to making the playoffs. Just some healthier players and some real continuity....

I disagree because the Cowboys have better talent on paper then the Giants but the Giants are into the Superbowl. It all comes down to match ups. If the Redskins had the Giants route to play the Bucs then the Cowboys who knows.
The playoffs are about who is the hottest team. The Packers have better talent g then the Giants. Your wrong about looking at a team on paper.

Jason said on the previous post that Gregg and Al are still under contract; teams have to ask the Redskins' permission to interview either.

Gregg was Schwatz's mentor, but that was seven years ago. I doubt that Schwartz wants to go back to that relationship when he's already interviewing for head coaching positions.

Here's a reminder of what they did against their own division with a healthy receiever corps and a backup QB:

The only way Williams goes to the Titans because his best friend Fisher enticing him. He wants to go to a team like the Rams ans improve them to get a head coach job and its Fishers choice not Schwatzs.

Blatche is old and knows what the score is. He is going to draw is pay check be blamed for loosing next year, by Snyder and some stupid fans, and will be out the door next year.

But it is all Snyder and that Vinny.

Posted by: mul | January 26, 2008 4:53 PM | Report abuse

Let us assume, for a moment, that Gregg Williams was not the right man for the job. Either because VinnyDAN just does like him (a recipe for disaster for any coach on any team) or because his defenses have not, at the end of the day, always gotten the job done.

They still could not have handled this any worse then they did. If VinnyDAN had asked the fans, what is the worst way I can handle firing GG, even we could not have imagined this.

VinnyDAN already knew he did not like GG, so one or two meetings, which clearly GG deserved, should have been enough to confirm that he still did not like him. Then tell him he is not going to be coach and move on.

If he is not going to be the coach because the team blew some leads, then I have to say that keeping Blache and the rest of the assistants (for one year until their contracts are up and they can join GG wherever he goes) makes no sense.

When Fassel now becomes head coach (or some other head coach without much of an offensive or defensive resume, since he has no choice in who his coordinators are) he will have one year to win, before the offensive and defensive assistants find other jobs and it really does start all over again.

We are FUBAR my friends.

Like GG or not, want him as HC or not, VinnyDAN scr#wed the pooch here. If they don't have a HC on the hook already, I can't imagine what kind of gutless idiot will take the job now.

VinnyDAN: How would like to be our head coach?

Candidate: Great - I have some awesome ideas.

VinnyDAN: Whoa there, hold on, no ideas please. We have all your ideas for you. You'll run the Holmgren version of the West Coast offense that Zorn knows, and the Williams version of defense, to the exten Blache remembers it. Until next year, when you will run something else. Unless we change our mind. So, hey, where did you go?

To quote John McCain: "FUBAR my friends, FUBAR."

They should go after Faneca in FA for sure.

As for Asante Samuels, I watched enough Pats games this year to consider him subpar; he's small, he's a poor tackler who has had a nose for the ball this year.

But once upon a time CB Larry Brown of the Cowboys had a nose for the ball in a Super Bowl against Pittsburgh, got signed that offseason by the Raiders for a ton of $$$, and never did anything worth talking about again.

To Snyder & Cerrato - Thanks for alienating the fans and players with the moves you all made within the last 24 hours. There's no telling how many times ownership and management has destroyed the continuity of this team. This may have been the final straw for me as a Redskin fan of 29 years

To Double G - Good luck. You were a great coach for the Skins and the defense. It's a shame you'll have to coach against this team instead of leading them out of the tunnel into whatever stadium.

To Saunders - Just when the offense was beginning to come along, they pull the rug from underneath you. Good luck at your next gig.

To the players - Good luck with your new head coach and I hope that you all play hard regardless of the mistakes that ownership and management made.

The head coach is going to be Fassel. No other coach is going to come into a situation where the OC and DC are already hired....and Snyder is just delaying the announcement in the hopes the fan outrage will calm down.

The Giants will never let Spagnuolo come to a division rival and Spagnuolo would be crazy to walk into this mess. Plus, if Snyder hired Spagnuolo he would have a rookie at OC and a rookie at head coach leading this team - along with an jerk of an owner.

Obviously, once Joe Gibbs retired, Snyder forgot all about continuity, stability, decency....you name it. He will bring in Fassel because he will be a patsy coach - one he can order around.

I do have to say that I partially blame Gibbs for this mess.....his retiring is his worst mistake thus far.....far worse than calling 2 timeouts in the Buffalo game.

I also believe we had the ball at the 14 and couldn't put it in the end zone to take an 8-point lead in the 4th quarter. And I believe we shanked a field goal. And I believe we gave up 52 points to the Pats. And I also believe we gave up a bazillion halftime leads under Gibbs/Williams.

Way to go Snyder & Cerrato!!

The St. Louis Rams will kick the Skins butts and other NFC teams if Al Saunders rejoins them. It will be the Greatest Show on Turf again.

The Skins are also letting one of the best defensive minds go to the Titans or the Jaguars. AFC teams, yes, but those are potent teams and will knock the teeth out of you.

Snyder & Cerrato have flushed what Gibbs and Double G have built the last 4 years in a matter of 16 days.

Gibbs should also get a big "thanks" for screwing the franchise over with his abrupt retirement. He should have been at least involved in compiling the HC candidates and esp. with the interview process. But no...he was too giddy to get the heck out of Redskins Park and go back to Charlotte.

What a screw job to the Skins fans from from Snyder, Cerrato & Gibbs?!?!?

here is how fans can stay fans while not feeling like they "feed the beast"

- stop going to games. the nfl gameday/fed ex exp is overrated right? stay home, invite friends over. buy that flat panel HD youve been dreaming about. wow your friends with game day home cookin. have pot lucks.

- are you like me an think most modern nfl/skins merch is pretty cheesy? Hit the thrift stores/ebay/yard sales to get some choice retro gear! I have some mad cool old school tees, hats and whatever I have found i a variety of places. Always decked out with gear for pennies on the dollar, and not lining the dannys pocket!

- If you live outside local TV market, forget direct TV and adopt a local bar/restuarnt and start a skins club. Make new friends, help out a local buisness. bring enough crowed and owner might cut you some sweet deals.

- get a bit Zen. We dont really have any power. Get all Satre on the deal. Having your own fixes is a great way to feel smarter and impress your friends but they are never getting adopted. I drafted a whole Gibbs transition plan last year that I have no doubt is better than this shabingus. but c'mon who is listening. I know!..no one...

- turn off Skins owned media. that whole move towards news being controled by teams/leagues is a bad trend, it is skewed newz, and rotz your brain.

- support critical media that turns an investigative eye towards the team. I love my country, so I applaud when stories are written that show problems/issues/scandals thus helpingg it "be all it can be" and what not. I try to take same approach to sports.

Anywho just some thoughts to navigate between the "I HATE THIS TEAN NOW" and "LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT, SNYDER IS GAWD" crowds....

Why wasn't Russ Grimm interviewed? To not even get an interview is another slap to the Skins alum by Snyder & Cerrato.

Double G and Al Saunders will make the Skins pay big time in the future. Look at Antonio Pierce..he's getting his payback against the Skins by being in the Super Bowl.

Mistake after mistake, same old story the last 6 years.

I think the players also let Gibbs down when he was the HC. They didn't buy into his system completely until Sean Taylor was murdered and were arrogant about their own abilities for the past 4 years. We let the sorry Giants beat us and they used that momentum to have a remarkable season.

"They're stuck on stupid" from the top to the bottom of the Skins franchise.

CHANGES WERE NEEDED!!! Dan deserves a "little" benefit of the doubt. He's a fan too and it's possible that he may want to win a Super Bowl as much as the posters on this site.... Let's face it, Gibbs time here was mediocre at best. A bit of continuity was accomplished, and we had a decent run after the tragedy, but title contenders we were not!

The Blanche promotion was a step toward maintaining a level of continuity on defense. The offense needed changing though! We have been in the lower half of the league in basically every category since Norv Turner's days here.

Fassel, Spagnualo, and Meeks would all be interesting for different reasons. No way to judge any before they have coached a game, or even been named HC. Let's relax and see what happens.

Yes RAP70, Snyder and Cerrato combined to kill 6 million people. Quit being such a melodramatic dumbass. You dislike those two knuckleheads, fine; but don't equate two bumbling executives with the worst mass murderers in history. Get a grip; it's a flippin' game!

The Redskins press release was LAME at best and dishonest at most. A very wise lawyer once said during the U.S. Senate McCarthy hearings that I think sums up the way Snyder manipulated and lied about his process. The attorney was Joseph Welsch and at one point in the hearing said to Sen. McCarthy and I paraphrase "Have you no decency Mr. Snyder"--that says it all regarding little Danny. The word decency being the KEY word!!!!

QUESTION: The Skins are a power running team. Why da heck would they switch to a West Coast offense? We don't have the personnel for that.

They should have nabbed up Cam Cameron before the Ravens hired him. Cameron is from the Zampese coaching tree.

Snyder & Cerrato - "Stuck on stupid" I tell ya.

It takes time to learn a new system. Took 26 games with the 800 page playbook from Big Al. Hopefully, Jim Zorn has a slimmer playbook and it will take less time to get himself fired. Wonder who will be "playmakers" in '08? Let's continue to build up to tear down again. This is getting fun. Dan Snyder should sign some more washed up players with huge salaries. Let's go after Issac Bruce and Eddie George. GO RAMS! GO TITANS!

So far, of all the coaching candidates left available out there, the only one who I could feel really good about at this point is Marty Schottenheimer. He knows how to build a winner.

But I'm beginning to get the picture. Dan doesn't really like explosive, abrasive coaches like Grilliams, Marty, or Cowher.

I think he tolerated Gibbs demands simply because of his stature as a Skins legend.

But no more. So the search is on for that Spineless Pawn, who will accept a pre-selected staff and have limited input on personnel--if Fassel hasn't already accepted the neural implant.

Found this on ES...from someone who claims to have a source....for what it's worth..personally I do not agree with it....hate you Snyder!

*********
The entire defensive staff -- outside of Williams, obviously -- is expected back. The only new hire there will be a D-line coach.
* Bugel will return as O-line coach. Byner, however, is gone, and I suspect most of the Gibbs elder statesman -- Breaux, Simmons -- are adios as well.
* Fassel is a big fan of Zorn's, but, most importantly, Zorn is a bigger fan of Fassel's. They will mesh well, and Fassel definitely gave a thumbs-up on the hire. Fassel also knows Blache, and gave a nod there, too. Don't think for a minute that Fassel doens't know or respect these men. He was in the loop on this.
* All that being said, Fassel will almost certainly be the head coach. He is a people person, who handles personalities well, and the heirarchy believes he can soothe some of the hurt feelings that have developed from the Williams debacle. He is a player's coach; this is not Marty waltzing in with Oklahoma Drills.
* The only complication would be if Snyder falls in love with the Giants D-Coordinator after the Super Bowl. But there's no obvious connection between this guy and the two newly-hired coordinators. So what guy would take a job where he can't even hire his offensive and defensive bosses? Not likely. So it's Fassel.
* Snyder is apparently paying each of his coordinators about 800 grand, and Rex Ryan would've taken about $2 mill to get. And since the owner's already on the hook for millions with Williams and Saunders, and for the sake of continuity - yes, continuity -- there was no need to get into a bidding war with the Ravens over Ryan.
* So, at the end of the day, you have continuity on defense, and on the O-line, and you get rid of an offensive coordinator (Saunders) who is considered a phony by a lot of people who know him (Remember, Herm Lewis and Carl Peterson ran him out of KC pretty quickly). What you end up with is a bright-minded Zorn and a person who has proved he can manage men (Fossil). The downside is that Campbell has to learn a new offense, but there's just not as much upheaval here as the naysayers want to suggest. If management really didn't care for Gregg Williams -- and his history in Buffalo and his lies to management here did him in -- then this is as seamless a transition as you were going to get.
Regarding his lies to managment, here's an anecdote. Williams began alienating Snyder and Col in '06, when he was stubborn and not forthright. For instance, there was a game in Philly, where Carlos Rogers was playing way, way off the receivers and kept getting burned for first downs. William was asked why he was positioned that way, and told management that Carlos was to blame. But another defensive assistant told management, no, that that's how Rogers was being coached. So there was just general distrust of Williams in the front office, and a sense that he was too bull-headed for Snyder.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 26, 2008 6:16 PM | Report abuse

The defense seems pretty much set. But to have continuity on the offensive side, given the current situation, they should hire Russ Grimm. The Skins currently have Bugel, Breaux, Simmons and Burns who worked with Gibbs the first time around and who know Grimm. If they hire Fassel these four dudes might re-retire.

I will not support anything associated with Dan Snyder and that includes sponsors of the Redskins.

UPS instead of Fed Ex.
T-Mobile instead of Sprint
Won't be going to 7-11 convience store
Boycotting Redskin games and won't get any tickets at Stub Hub.
Won't be using Re Max for Real Estate.
Won't be eating at Johhny Rockets

Get the sponsors to see what a terrible owner Synder is and they won't endorse the Redskins. It would be great to see them pull sponsorship because of the fans disdain for the owner.

We can do this. Redskin fans Unite! Boycott anything associated with Dan Synder.

Lisa,

You lost me at: * Snyder is apparently paying each of his coordinators about 800 grand, and Rex Ryan would've taken about $2 mill to get. And since the owner's already on the hook for millions with Williams and Saunders, and for the sake of continuity - yes, continuity -- there was no need to get into a bidding war with the Ravens over Ryan.

Since when does Dan Snyder care about wasting money or overspending. He cares only about winning, nothing more nothing less. The fools on here who thinks Snyder's only objective is to make more money are the same "type" of people who think we went to war in Iraq because of oil. These people are dimwitted simpletons, and should simply be ignored.

Barno,

Jason's initial take on the new coaching search was that Dan Snyder didn't want to hire Gregg Williams and that Dan had his heart set on Bill Cowher. At that time, you said he was full of sh*t and making all of this up.

Part one of Jason's sentiments have just played out with GWill's release from the skins, and part two of his sentiments were confirmed by Boomer Esiason. Doesn't that put you (not him) in the wrong?

Adam

If it's Fassel I'd say he's our Wade Phillips. And Zorn is our Jason Garrett. Word was that Zorn wasn't going to come. But with Blatche as DC - and I believe Blatche has said he is not interested in a HC job - it may be that Zorn has been promised he's the heir apparent to Fassel. After all, Mora is the heir apparent in Seattle because Mora is Seattle's Jason Garrett. Zorn should just realize that Grilliams was our heir apparent and look what they did to him.

Even though the Redskins offense has been erratic (understatement) over the past few years, the defense, with the exception of 2006, has been solid.

My concern is that without GG, it will become another area of weakness for the team.

Anyone recall Ron Lynn and his infamous "bend don't break" D?

Here's hoping Blache keeps GG's philosophy and the D remains solid. It's the one area I always enjoyed watching on Sundays, because it was consistent.

Oh, by the way - the owner of the Redskins sucks. He is a no-talent a$$clown who hustled his way into money, but doesn't have a clue how to properly manage a business or the people that make it run.
