Special focus on special teams

It's not fair to say that Thursday night's preseason finale at the Arizona Cardinals is a meaningless game -- not when there are still players who think they have a shot at the roster and others who want to show coaches they deserve playing time during the regular season.

It's definitely worth keep an eye on Devin Thomas, Albert Haynesworth, Willie Parker and Ryan Torain, but as the coaches decide who fills those final few roster spots, a lot of attention will be focused on special teams play, as we discussed in today's print edition story.

"For guys that are on the bubble, young guys, even guys that's going to be seen and get a shot to play somewhere else, they look for guys who can play special teams," linebacker Lorenzo Alexander said. "The more you can do out there and the better you can perform out there, they're more willing to pick a guy up like that and be the sixth receiver or the eighth linebacker."

It'll be a full workload. You won't see much of the starters, which means the guys on the bubble will play a lot of snaps at their regular offensive or defensive position and will have to stay on the field for kickoffs, punts and field goals. Coaches will keep a close eye on how heavy players are breathing and whether they can handle all the activity.

"We get a chance to see guys tired and how they react," says Danny Smith, special teams coordinator. "Can they still carry their load?"

Special teams undergoes an overhaul every year, but Smith's group entered training camp with more questions than usual. And while he says he still doesn't know who's going to return punts and kickoffs, he likes most of the answers that have come out of the past few weeks. He raves about players like Graham Gano and Josh Bidwell.

"We're working hard. We've got to mix and match a lot of different people, a lot of different groupings," Smith said. "Vets are playing well, and we've got some other players who still need a lot of work."

Smith has been fielding different personnel groups almost every time out. Because he doesn't know exactly who's going to make the roster, he's wanted to see a variety of players at a variety of positions. While that'll be dividends down the road, it also means that he'll enter the season without having seen his top units play much side-by-side.

"Overall, we've been pleased," he said. "We're progressing. It's a work in progress. But we'll be ready when the season starts."

I hope AH only plays a series or two. I know the coaches want to get an extended look at him and really push his conditioning level, but God forbid he gets hurt in this game. Simply because the media will NEVER let it go if that happened.

Selvish Capers is more like 6' 5" and has excellent footwork/agility. A buddy of mine that is both a Skins and WVU fan told me about him leading up to the draft and how he hoped we'd get him. Subsequent research indicated that he was projected to be a mid round pick until a disappointing combine. I'd rather take a kid's body of work for 3-4 years over one weekend getting prodded and jumping thru hoops.

My prediciton - Selvish will be starting somewhere on this O-line by 2012.

Can't agree with you there. Danny Smith is one of the best ST coaches in the league. His teams are usually very quality, with the exception of two things in recent years: a quality kicker (can't really teach that) and a quality returner (mostly instinctual).

Aside from that, his teams are generally very good. Rarely do we give up monster returns. I can't remember the last punt or field goal we've had blocked. He's almost always good for a couple brilliant trick plays a season (swinging gate excluded, which was much more on Zorn for calling it twice in a row than on Smith's design). Heck, he got Hunter the Punter two TDs last year.

Danny Smith isn't a bad ST coach, imo.

Usually it's the players that suck.

Favorite Danny Smith moment: Him yelling at Zorn to call timeout last season. At that moment I thought I'd rather have him at head coach over Zorn. And he's just the ST coach.

Danny Smith is fiery. I like that in a coach. Although his team maybe overrated I am a fan of Rex Ryan.

And his his vocab.

Jeff Ireland will seek out Dez Bryant tonight

Posted by Michael David Smith on September 2, 2010 11:16 AM ET

Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant won't be on the field in tonight's preseason game against the Dolphins. But Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland will be looking for him before the game.

The Miami Herald reports that Ireland will try to find Bryant and talk to him in an attempt to clear the air over their infamous encounter during a pre-draft meeting.

For those who have forgotten, Ireland asked Bryant if his mom was a prostitute. Bryant was upset about that, and even more upset when the Dolphins floated a story that it was actually Bryant who raised the issue by saying that his dad had been a pimp and his mom had worked for his dad -- which Bryant called "a lie." The NFL called Ireland's question "insensitive and inappropriate."

Now Ireland apparently hopes that by seeking Bryant out and talking face to face, the issue can be closed once and for all.

....................................

Jeff Ireland is an idiot -- doesn't know when to shut his stupid yap. Leave bad enough alone, dude.

As both a skins and WVU fan i agree. I think the staff sees a guy that they can mold into their type of player. We have moved Slevish from the RT spot where he played every game as an EER to the left side of the line as a T/G at this point. I dont think they do that if they are gonna cast the guy off.
I could see him being a project o-lineman for Shanny and if he sticks with him I have no doubt that Capers can preform... And I am also very excited for actual meaningful football to begin again this evening!!!

Love this part too:

Predicted record: 10-6.

The Redskins were a much more talented team than their 4-12 record from a year indicated and all they did this offseason was add a future Hall of Fame head coach, Mike Shanahan, and a quarterback who is still one of the 10 best in the NFL. Additions like that boost the confidence in the locker room. If they can use that confidence to get off to a fast start, they have as good a chance to win the division as any of the other teams. Seemingly every year in the NFL there is one team that goes from last to first. This year it is the Redskins.

Rex Ryan to DeAngelo Hall: "That's why my brother got rid of your ass"
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 2, 2010 9:38 AM ET
Rex Ryan's trash talk to the media isn't half as fun as the real stuff on the field.

Last night's Hard Knocks showed Ryan berating Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall after a late hit on LaDainian Tomlinson after a long run. Ryan tells Hall he should have made the play around the line of scrimmage.

"You aren't gonna tackle anybody!" Ryan said. "That's why my brother got rid of your ass!"

(Rob Ryan was Hall's defensive coordinator in Oakland.)

Hall had a pick and the Jets lost.

So...

I'm already tired of Rex Ryan's lame HC act. We'll see how much his shoot-from-the-hip loudmouth antics endear him to people when the Jets go 7-9 and miss the playoffs.

Of course Scott didn't like that move. I loved it, working in the gray, sending a little message sent from the big uglies of front.

Rex Ryan to DeAngelo Hall: "That's why my brother got rid of your a$$"
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 2, 2010 9:38 AM ET
Rex Ryan's trash talk to the media isn't half as fun as the real stuff

**********

That was funny!! Took me a moment to place it, Rex's bro, Rob Ryan, was d-coach in Oakland. Of course, what made it funnier is that a few plays later, DHall picks Sanchez near the goal line.

I was cursing right back the J E T S during the show.

Brennan: Mom, I honestly thought I was gonna be raped for a second. He had the craziest look in his eyes. And at one point he said, Let's get it on.

Dale: That was about the fighting. I am so not a raper

Dr. Moe recommneds beer, couch, football, and naps.

This system has done more for me than when I ran 3 miles a day and lifted weights.

I suggest you try it.

I loved how Ray Lewis' picture was atop this blog for like 2 weeks. Nice. We should have changed the name to Redskins In-Slicer.

I could see him being a project o-lineman for Shanny and if he sticks with him I have no doubt that Capers can preform... And I am also very excited for actual meaningful football to begin again this evening!!!

Posted by: Stu27 | September 2, 2010 11:31 AM | Report abuse

Yep, tend to think that is exactly how they are regarding him- a project with real potential. Some mocks had him in the 2nd round pre-Senior Bowl/Combine. Give him a year to work on his strength and zone blocking technique and I think he'll be a solid backup by next season, hopefully a starter by 2012.

I'd say I'm stacked like Morganna.

suliman -- Take you ad and shove it. So typical of the Redskins: donation center in Virginia, donation center in Maryland. What am I missing? Right -- Washington DC, the city where the team claims to be based.

Posted by: PlayAction | September 2, 2010 2:47 PM | Report abuse

everyone excited about the game?

No? Me neither. It marks the end of the offseason, the time when real champions are crowned.

And once again, we've won the offseason championship. By getting Donovan McNabb and Jamaal Brown and Trent Williams and a bunch of Shanahans and more big name RBs than anyone else even has ... we are VICTORIOUS!!!!

so why bother the regular season?

Posted by: zcezcest1 | September 2, 2010 3:10 PM | Report abuse

Danny Smith should never have been retained by Shanahan/Allen. His teams have never been a competitive advantage for this team, and in close games at the end of last year, they cost us. Two fumbles on punt returns in the 4Q were debacles.

No kicker has a shelf life beyond 12 games for us.

We have no locked down KO or PR guys yet, and the season starts in 10 days.

This is not the hallmark of a team that has quality Special Teams.

Im thinkin' more like skins-13 Dallas-10. Dallas' offense is really out of sync somehow. Skins defense can hold dallas to 10pts and mcnabb and the boyz can score at least one touchdown.I don't think we are all that good, I just think that Dallas isn't very good.
