Springs Doesn't Practice but May Play

Jason Reid reports:

Cornerback Shawn Springs (calf) was sidelined again during practice but could play Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, Coach Jim Zorn said.

Springs has sat out five games because of his calf injury, which he aggravated in Sunday's 23-7 loss to the New York Giants. The 12-year veteran also missed the season-opening loss to New York at Giants Stadium because of a shin injury.

"We just have to wait and see about Shawn," Zorn said.

He might not play? Shocking news...

Springs wont play, we've seen this act before...we know how this plays out....

Anyone catch that the Pats signed Junior Seau...

I know this place loves to tool on Springs, but I still say he is the best corner on the roster.

RC, Good luck against sween. His record is too good.

Sorry, just catching up on today's post. Bout to empty the notebook in my head:

Some of it has to do with some differences in the overall run game this season, and what is emphasized in any particular week.

"We don't have as many pulling plays," Smith said. "We have some in there, and I don't know exactly how much he did last year, but I'm sure not as much as in the past. No, he hasn't been pulling as much.

"Whoever we're playing against, we don't think those pulling plays are the best for us, so why put them in when you may have other plays that are better? That's the only reason."

For the most part, the run game has been the identity of the offense, and Smith is pleased with its production and effectiveness. But I have a feeling we might see Thomas moving laterally quite a bit this week.

Whaaaa? This bangs on what I said yesterday. What exactly are they doing? Just tale it like it is.

Don't say your gonna keep the run game and don't.

Just convert the whole thing to west coast. Fire Bugel. And call it a day.......

OMG!!!

Shawn Springs is listed as questionable? Is Shawn Springs a good corner? Yes. Is the 'skins defense better with him out there? Yes.

Am I (we) tired of his tried ass act? Yes!!!!

Posted by: RedDMV | December 5, 2008 3:49 PM | Report abuse

If this was an NFC East game, Springs would definitely play. Dude is Mr. Glass. The last straw will be after he leaves that he signs with Dallas. Check stealer.

Using this logic I could make a case that I am the best CB on the roster. I don't ever play, but if I did I would be an All-Pro.

Posted by: Pleepleus | December 5, 2008 3:56 PM | Report abuse

Markin21132, I think you mean "his luck is too good" (also, my roster ain't too shabby either ... Shaun Hill (QB/SF) has been a FF point scoring surprise ... enough to make me think that the 49ers game in SF is by no means a guaranteed W).

Posted by: dcsween | December 5, 2008 3:57 PM | Report abuse

Pleepus, could we trade you for a first round pick in the upcoming draft, or do other teams know of your injury history??

Posted by: BeantownGreg | December 5, 2008 3:57 PM | Report abuse

Glass? How about Marcus Washington they surely could use him? Now with Fletcher down they run out of linebackers not DL as everyone thought.

Springs has been more reliable than Marcus Washington ... I agree with Jason and the Redskins coaches. The guy makes the perfect free safety replacement for Sean Taylor. He seems to already be moving that way ... definitely keep him AND Hall. I would be stupid to let them go, really, really stupid.

Period.

And the gov'nor of Balimer wants to reach the moon so the Ravens can play above and beyond everyone else on the planet, mebbe Montgomery County can help him pay for it.

Posted from a Ravens fan on the AFC North blog on ESPN.com:

But for me, the real insult comes from Redskins fans, who watched their O-Line fail to diagnose blitzes against NYG last week. And they think they're going to drive up I-95 and revive their season? Doubtful. Here's how its going to work. The Ravens are going to control the line of scrimmage from both sides of the ball. The Redskins characteristically don't take shots downfield and they will continue not to because Campbell won't have enough time. Throwing underneath will work to an extent but when they get to halftime and Portis has 34 yards on 14 carries, get impatient. Campbell is known as a good decision maker, but his mistakes usually come when he can't rely on the run game and he is under consistent pressure. You can safely expect Sunday to exemplify this.

As I read this passage, I got more and more pissed, and began to cringe harder and harder and harder as I realized how effing reasonable this reader sounded. God I hope Zorn gets back to his NO-ARI-DAL-PHI roots, and throws that conservative BS out the door.

Posted by: psps23 | December 5, 2008 4:01 PM | Report abuse

BTW, if Springs would have stayed healthy during his career, he'd go down as one of the top 3 corners of this generation, since Darrell Green and Deion were in their primes. (Champ and Charles Woodson would be the other two).

Breaking News:: According to an annonymous source earlier today, Marcus Washington and Shawn Springs inadvertantly collided into each other while boarding a team bus. According to this source the aftermath was horrendous. "Both Washington and Springs appeared like shattered glass on the asphalt!" According to this source (rumored to be Adam Archelletta) Bubba Tyer had to grab Vinny Cerratto from his radio show to help tape the two players injuries. With both of them wearing walking boots on both feet it will be a game time decision as to whether they play on Sunday night at Baltimore.

I was careful not to say "when healthy" because that term so rarely applies to Springs. "When playing" he is still the best corner. ["When healthy" refers to those first few weeks of the season ... when the FO is doghousing him for refusing to have taken a pay cut.] He is not a wasted roster spot. The continuous anti-Springs vibe up here is off-base.

Posted by: dcsween | December 5, 2008 4:08 PM | Report abuse

Champ has had lots of injuries lately. Probably more than Springs!!! So, there is no comparison, Springs is again more reliable. Perhaps not a Darrel Green or a Deion ... still ....

His conversion to Free Safety, permanent nickle may extend his career and give the Redskins the benefit of his talents for a couple of years or more.

AND HE LIKE HALL IS A LOCAL GUY. I have to think that must add something to whether they play hurt or not ... how much they are in it for the fans and the team.

Posted by: periculum | December 5, 2008 4:09 PM | Report abuse

Didn't someone declare Springs as 'definite' to play this weekend? JZ or Springs himself?

Posted by: 4thFloor | December 5, 2008 4:10 PM | Report abuse

Its up to Zorn. He needs to make some adjustments to his game plan that's for sure.

I would throw on 1st short to Betts and Sellers this has been pretty successful. Call more draw plays and "counter-treys" using Randy Johnson to the right side with Portis and Betts to keep the rush off. Then play action.

He will have to go to Malcom Kelly in this game. And Devin Thomas. No and/ifs about it.

Usually comes from guys who (1) can't remember the big plays Springs has made for the team; (2) don't have a clue how few games he's actually missed as a Redskin; (3) don't understand what it means to cover an NFL receiver with a bad let; and (4) would call him inept if he played hurt and got beat.

Dealer, Both men were looking at the ball -- the way you should if you're trying to catch it. Neither one was in the other one's field of vision. This sort of thing happens all the time in professional sports -- even in baseball where guys can yell to warn each other.

deal- He was convicted of something like a dozen charges, of which four (I think) were felonies (armed robbery and kidnapping among them).
OJ got a max of 33 years, eligible for parole after nine.

Parole in nine years = Punishment fits Crime.

Serve all 33 years (basically life)= Punishment fits Crime + Once got away with double murder.

Do you think there might be any difference between the injuries and how they would affect a corner back -- who has to be the fastest man on the field -- and a running back? Or are all injuries the same in your mind?

And, frankly, I watched CP last Saturday and I think it would have been much smarter for him to sit that game out and recover. Playing injured is not necessarily the best thing for the team.

sween, according to bram, the best skins beat reporter and dexter manley (i know i know) springs is the deep throat. if you go back and read the article you will see that archie wouldn't have known some of the things...AND the press asked him about it after one of the games.

you hatin on hall? dude has 3 picks with this team already...more than anyone on this team.

te, this isn't baseball and that wasn't a flyball. if you go back and see the play the ball hung up in the air forEVER. hall had stopped running, and was waiting for the ball to just drop in his arms and springs came from nowhere...seriously i have never seen a play in football like that. never. usually the other teammates start to block or get ready to block. even seantay would've never done that and there's no one i want to see with the ball than him...

Skins must pressure Flacco!! he's a rookie so don't let him stand back there and survey the field make him throw early, now you know they are going copy cat the Giants offensive game plan so lets not be stupid. I would blitz Flacco and not let him get comfortable, and beware of another rookie Ray Rice, he is very dangerous we need this game big time.
