Springs, Landry Not in Pads for Practice

The team is in full pads for today's practice, as the Jasons watch.

Shawn Springs and LaRon Landry are not in pads (Jalaca says he'd be stunned if Landry plays Saturday at this point).

Todd Wade and H.B. Blades remain out, as are Malcolm Kelly and Anthony Mix.

Todd Yoder iis still excused, after the death of his grandmother; Lorenzo Alexander is back after being excused Monday for the birth of his child (still no details on that yet).

Chris Horton looks like he may take full work and Dorian Smith is on the field as well after re-signing this morning.

Heyer is on the field for the first time in 10 days, but is off to the side in shorts working with trainers. He's shooting for a return against Carolina.

Randoms (all in one post because Loseable Type 2.0 bounced me -- ME!!!!!!):

Springsteen to the Supe? Works for me. Less lame than, say, McCartney.

Jasno's response to the safety comment on the previous thread (typos included for your enjoyment):

Doughty is the starter without miuch question
Fox and horton are working at ss - fox can play free as well; coaches not sure if horton is ready to play free yet
They like kareem moore as a free safety
Ghee and hanilton will likely be on the strong side

Alex#####. You must have never played any sports. you don't ever coach or play to lose regardless if it is a real game, preseason or a pick up game. That is flat out ridiculous to suggest losing on purpose to see how a team reacts.

What do we think of Springsteen as the Supe halftime show? The NY Post is reporting it, altho it hasn't been officially announced My boss, Emilio, is a huge Springsteen fan and is appalled. "It's a sellout to the man...it's the end of the world as we know it. ... I'll be in a funk all day."
Herewith, my top three Supe halftime shows:
U2, Stones, Prince. Michael Jackson and the kids finish in a tie for fourth with Up With People.

My top Super Bowl show is the dog catching a frisbee that has been thrown 75+ yards.

I could not care less about the halftime show. The Super Bowl is about football - not halftime shows or commercials! Unfortunately, I am probably in the minority with this thinking.

All that being said, it would be cool to see GWAR do the halftime show. Talk about a spectacle!

Posted by: CBT | August 12, 2008 9:50 AM | Report abuse

Never been a huge Springsteen guy but eh, whatever. Seems a bit I dunno, subdued for the Superbowl. I usually think of the up tempo stuff, I guess he can do that kind of music but I think of songs like Philadelphia. Sell out? Tell poor Emilio to take off the rose colored glasses that man sold out long ago. There is a "E Street" station on sirius satelite radio.

My only props for Bruce is that he's always made an attempt at least to keep the E Street Band relevant. When I worked for Turner in Atlanta he came to Philips Arena to do a show we put a behind home plate banner that said Bruce Springstein then the date for a Braves game. He saw it and not one out into the inning his agent was calling my boss yelling saying to take it down because it didn't say E Street Band. No good deed goes unpunished.

Let's see, the Raiders drop Stuart Schweirget & then decide that they want to get Archuleta. Now they are going to try and move him to LB. We should have a poll going to see who is worse, Archuleta or Schwiegert ?

irregardinglessful, I'm happy that Thomas is back on the field. Watched some of the GB/Cincy game last night, and saw Jordy Nelson catch a pass. Be interesting to see how Thomas/Nelson/Kelly's careers go.

Who was it that cut Kenny Watson? Did he get cut, or did the team just not resign him?? He's gone on to have a decent career.

The U2 performance was poignant and special given the circumstances. A brilliant set that was absolutely appropriate for the occasion. Prince was also a great show, but pales in comparison to U2.

All the others sucked. They need to stop pulling these geriatric bands out of mothballs to perform. I say go with innocuous modern pop like The Killers or The Foo Fighters.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 12, 2008 10:11 AM | Report abuse

Wow GWAR, haven't heard that in some time. They certainly would be the "Up Tempo" show I was talking about. Given the history of "wardrobe malfunctions" in halftime shows though I'd think the NFL would demure, after all a malfunction at a GWAR show could involve impalement.

"INTRODUCING THE NEW CFT
Posted by Mike Florio on August 12, 2008, 9:49 a.m.
As the saying goes, better never than late. Or something.

We’re pleased and proud to roll out a brand-spanking-new version of CollegeFootballTalk.com, our long-time sister site which has, in fairness, been treated more like a red-headed stepsister.

But that all ends today. Though it might take some time to get CFT to the level of output that has become commonplace at PFT, there will be daily updates, every day, beginning today at CFT.

The boss at CFT is MDS. But I’ll be posting on a regular basis there as well. And we’re talking to some other folks with recognizable names who might be pitching in, too.

So check it out. There are permalinks and RSS feeds and comments and all the other stuff that we have at PFT. CFT even has a PFT-style arrest counter, which given the number of NCAA programs and the activities of the players likely will never get out of single digits.

Heck, we might even want to give certain programs (ahem, Georgia) their own arrest counter.

They had a team of artists/special effects and make up people who worked year round in the PIT creating the stuff. Better production value than your average slasher film.

If they did the Half Time show they would need 12 mack trucks of fake blood, 3 tons of foam core and laytex and would immediately be arrested upon completion. I envision like chainsawing janet jacksons...well you get the picture.

Well, about 10 years ago, the Texas Southern University band and the Prarie View band put on a show down here when the two teams played each other - big high stepping bands that put on great halftime shows. Apprently there was bad blood between the two, someone did something they shouldn't have and fisticuffs ensued - a great time was had by all...that would be a half time show for the ages...

Morning all, just back from vacation.

Do I hear right? There is now a rival Redskins Insider fantasy league!!!

Whoever suggested bring in Feely to compete with Suisham - don't think so. Feely's very accurate (21/23 last season) but his kickoffs aren't any longer than Suisham's so he wouldn't be an upgrade. He was just unlucky that he was going to:

3. Cost the Dolphins $2m to keep this year, and,
(. The undrafted rookie we signed kicked 41 and 49yd goals straight through the middle on Saturday!

Posted by: Redcoat | August 12, 2008 10:51 AM | Report abuse

...well, there's a little video linked at the end of that article, but I can't find any other video, is what I meant. All that video shows is that the two bands' uniforms are very similar... must have added to the mess.

"They marched vigorously into our band members." I love that.

John D,

In the early days of the Super Bowl, before the commercials sold for bajillions, the halftime entertainment consisted of good college marching bands. Now, with large budgets, it's degenerated into over-the-hill rock bands.

At least they haven't gone back further to over-the-hill big bands: Glen Miller, Guy Lombardo, Benny Goodman. Sure, they're all dead, but the music lives forever. And they've resisted broadway: a 20-minute version of South Pacific or Cats.

Posted by: Redcoat | August 12, 2008 10:54 AM | Report abuse

Not a rival league per se Redcoat, just collecting the spillover from the league that filled up. There was such hue and cry over leaving people out that I figured it made sense to create a second league.

But apparently the hue and cry was out of proportion to the actual demand... to wit, I have seven spots left in the second fantasy league. Anybody who wants in, drop me a line at nateinthepdx at gmail dot com. It's free, it's fun, and etc.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 12, 2008 10:54 AM | Report abuse

Yes - it was a very big deal for about a week down here - "They marched vigorously into our band members" - that's good - Now another Houston tradition - The Rice Marching Owl Band (The MOB) - they put on satirical half time shows with sometimes extremly funny skits - with all members dressed in Blues Brothers type costumes - Well worth the cost of admission and pain to watch a Rice game - that would also work at the Super Bowl - something different!

Picking up Chad isn't exactly the way I thought we'd go, but all the reports say he slotted straight in at his first practice and led the receivers with all his passes so I guess it's encouraging. "Relevant" might be an overstatement for this year at least, but I can hope.

Although if I were the The Ginn Family, I'd be disappointed that the deep pass just went away forever....

BTW Greg, you remember those 2x DEs (Langford and Merling) you guys dissected endlessly pre-draft that we picked up? Both look VERY good already, but then they are playing in a 3-4.

How would you know whether they were "plain-clothed"? "Sorry, Chuck, you can't go in. Your clothes aren't plain enough." Today, I guess that means they have to be in Abercrombie and Fitch, although wouldn't that consititute a student uniform?

I don't see secondary coaches losing too much sleep over that bunch, although they are all young and game. Bess and Kircus might make it, and Lord knows we need some of them to come through.

Posted by: Redcoat | August 12, 2008 11:31 AM | Report abuse

Why are you guys so high on Mix, I haven't seen him do anything special. Having size and playing with soup in college doesn't cut it for me. I want to see some production.

Same thing with McMullen, although I have seen production from him against the second and third teams. He has dropped a pass or two that should have been caught. The book on him is he makes great catches but misses the easy ones too often. I would assume this is a lack of concentration or running before catching - not a good thing for your resume.

I like both receivers, have McMullen slightly ahead of Mix - but really don't see anything special out of either one. I think its hard to evaluate a guy against the 2nd team defense. I would like to see both play earlier in the game.

I heard Zorn speak about Thrash and I'm almost certain JT is a starter with SM and AR-El. Zorn says JT has a great understanding of this offense and will fit in immediately. As mentioned earlier, Kelley and Thomas are locks - thats five guys. If they keep six, one spot is available. I certainly hope Kelley doesn't go on IR.

I am extremely disappointed in both rookie wideouts missing games, but we have three left.

Another note, these receivers can play hard and get called back at any time during the season. Or maybe another team will pick them up.

Posted by: rando | August 12, 2008 11:31 AM | Report abuse

Agreed Nate....I was going to say something about a first versus a sixth round pick, but it matters not, violence against a woman, is just never, ever acceptable.

Posted by: lvhtArlington | August 12, 2008 11:33 AM | Report abuse

Hard to understand all the hate for Suisham up here -- although this place is sort of a lightning rod for hate.

Suisham had a good game last week. Hit a long field goal and he put all his kick offs into the end zone. We've got bigger needs than a field goal kicker. If Suisham doesn't do well in the future, you can find someone as good as Feely (who's been cut by what? four teams?) when you're tired of Suisham.

But, the Redskins have a history of giving up too quickly on FG kickers. This one's not a bust.

Is Tryon as bad as he looks?

Please tell me this kid is going to improve. They say that learning to make the adjustment as a rookie cornerback is one of the more daunting transitions from college to the pros.

Lorton was a fun place in its prime. Escapes were frequent and you just couldn't beat that convenient location along Rt. 123. Escapees were generally back to D.C. within about 30 minutes of scaling the fences.

Note the logo on this fine, new, upscale addition to the Northern VA golf scene: Laurel Hills

We are all just prisoners here, of our own device.

Tryon looks a little overwhelmed at this point, which to me is not completely unexpected. He'll be a good teams guy this year, while learning his craft.

But, the Redskins have a history of giving up too quickly on FG kickers. This one's not a bust.

Agreed, Mull It. I had lengthy arguement about this a few days ago; Suisham makes over 80% of his kicks. His only problem is WHEN he misses. His miss in the playoffs killed our momentum in that game. He missed a gimme in the preseason. If he was 36, he'd be gone. But since he's 26, he's still got some room to grow and get steadier. Having said that, I think it would have been wise to bring in some camp competition to keep him from getting complacent.

As for the love for Mix, I don't particularly understand that either. It's kind of cool here to fall in love with a guy at the end of the roster to root for to make the team, I guess. There was nice "spirited" debate about Mason here yesterday and I still don't get why he's a better option than the 3 quality guys we've had here all along. Since it's almost certain this team won't keep 6 WRs and 4 RBs, it'll be interesting to see whose release generates more outrage here, Mason or Mix.
