Springs Looks Sprung To Play

Shawn Springs had his best practice yet, made an interception and looks good to go to play Sunday. Of course, his body needs to keep responding well the increased work, but barring a setback I am told there is a "strong possibility" he will be a part of at least some packages Sunday.

The D-Line is still banged up. Salave'a is the worst of the group and Gregg Williams says there's a chance they'll dress 8 linemen for the game with Daniels and Griffin beat up, too. That might not be good news for Duckett if it happens.

Also, Dolomite Jenkins has left the building and I'm not sure he's coming back. Clinton spoke coming off the field today in full pads, so no costumes or characters today.

That's pretty much it for the news of the day.

All our defensive problems are solved!!! Springs is back!!!

Why don't they just trade Duckett now? His contract is up at the end of the season. Let's at least get something for him. (banging my head on my desk)

Duckett is in insurance policy. I doubt he is going anywhere :(

Posted by: Megskin | October 12, 2006 2:55 PM | Report abuse

meg's on top of that one. He's there in case of injury, although, honestly, if CP went down for any prolonged stretch I couldn't seem them making the playoffs regardless.

Posted by: Jason La Canfora | October 12, 2006 2:57 PM | Report abuse

You are supposet to back me up here doll. Think about it. A third pick for a guy that won't get into games. Then he just walks at the end of year and we have nothing.

Posted by: jm220 | October 12, 2006 2:58 PM | Report abuse

The Duckett trade is another example of a very questionable personnel moves by the Skins. Running Back was one of very few areas that they actually had some depth.

I think I've already ranted about this several times in the past. How much more do you want me to do?

Posted by: Megskin | October 12, 2006 3:05 PM | Report abuse

Stro, are you judging strictly on this year's FA class? B/c since Gibbs came back, they have been on point with their personnell decisions--think Springs, Taylor, Brunell, Portis, Cooley, Daniels, Griffin, Moss, Salave'a, Rabach, etc. You can't judge the guys they brought in this year after only 5 games--you have to give them at least 1 season to show what they can do. The Duckett move does seem questionable right now, but you never know what will happen in the nfl, or who will go down with a major injury. I think Gibbs & Co. have been extremely successful the last few years in getting quality players in here, and we will see about Carter, Lloyd, ARE, AA, etc.

Jason, isn't there a trade deadline coming up? No surprises that there is no more thrilling news from Redskins Park, but are you getting any word from your rolodex of agents and "league sources"? Any disgruntled CBs out there?

Posted by: dcsween | October 12, 2006 3:14 PM | Report abuse

The Beat Reporter from WTEM 980 said the same exact thing written here on tuesday. The exact same thing ('certain packages').

He needs to play this week, because he has to get ready to play Indy next week. You can't go against Payton your very 1st game back. You need some game speed practice, which is the exact reason why he should play Sunday.

Trade deadline is Tuesday.

Lets break it down:

Springs can't stay on the field. Always hurt.
Taylor is good against the run, weak pass defender. Always a little too late.
Brunell is inconsistent at best.
Portis is good.
Cooley is good.
Daniels is injury prone and inconsistent.
Griffin is also injury prone and has done nothing this year.
Moss is good.
Salave'a is an average player at best, would not start on most teams
Rabach is also just average at center.
I agree the jury is still out on the new guys, but it not looking good so far.

Skins are just 18 and 19 since Gibbs's return.

Posted by: Stro | October 12, 2006 3:20 PM | Report abuse

I'm not so sure on all of those.

Cooley and Springs are slam dunks but considering we had just traded away the best cover corner in the league and Springs was well known it's hardly like finding a diamond in the rough.

ST- I love the guy but look whoelse was on the board. Deangelo Hall, Tommy Harris (Probably the best dt in the league now and who many speculated we'd take, Ben Rothlesburger, Vilma, Wilfork. To be fair so was Amhad Carroll but it's not like he was a steal.

Cornelius-Wasn't he pre-Gibbs?

Moss- I'd say that had more to do with Coles than Gibbs.

Daniels-Meh, he has great games then disapears. Great locker room guy from what i've heard.

Salave'A-Yeah he's a space eater not bad.

ARE- Love the guy but paid too much.

Archugonnastartplayingsoon-Don't get me started.

Brunell-See Arch

Lloyd-This ones an incomplete

AC-Bad just bad.

Don't forget the Ducketts and Michael Barrows. Remember him? Nah me neither.

Think about this...... Maybe the Redskins traded for Duckett so that the Eagles would not get him

Posted by: Annapolis Skin Fan | October 12, 2006 3:26 PM | Report abuse

I wanted to drop some knowledge about a misconception going around regarding Sean Taylor aka Swoop. I followed Swoop all through college. He wears a t-shirt, XXXL with "Swoop" on the back, that our foundation, The Alex P. Keaton Foundation (APKF), gave to him his rookie year. We can talk about the APKF later. I would have become friends with Newt Gingrich if the Skins had passed on him.

He is the best cover safety in the league other than Ed Reed. Fact. Has he been burned a few times recently? Yes. But that does not change the fact that he is one of the best cover safeties in the league. He also happens to be one of the most punishing hitters ever to play the game. Just because he delivers big hits like Snoop in '92, doesn't mean he is a mediocre cover safety. That is the reason, more than any other, why he was drafted so high. I'm just saying, just because he's one thing, doesn't mean he's also not the other.

He is both. He is a freak of nature. He makes me want to sculpt. I want to write a poem. I want to sing. I want to...what's the

We are going to steal the Titans' girlfriends, Woooody (who knows what I'm talking about? Pipe down ArtMonktotheSticks).

Also, Tony Kornheiser is not funny anymore. It is sad. I used to idolize him growing up when I was writing the humor page for my high school paper. Now he is sucky. Like a rainty Tuesday, or a coffee with powdered cream, or watching your boy kiss his girlfriend and wondering "WTF happened to that guy?". Our boy The Mexican, buys soap from the store on M Street that sells it in blocks like cheese and they have to cut it and weigh it for you and wrap it. Fact. He is not gay and used to play football. Sadness. He also wears blazers to MS-13 hangouts. Fact.

Agreed. Tony Kornheiser is not funny on MNF. In fact, he sucks big time. Not funny, Not interesting, Not insightful. Totally laim.
Sorry Tony.

It appears that the suits at ESPN will not allow TK to be himself. He is still hilarious as ever on PTI. The other problem is that Joe T. never shuts up. It's only the fifth week, maybe TK will come through.

Posted by: Annapolis Skin Fan | October 12, 2006 3:50 PM | Report abuse

Why would the suits at ESPN tell someone they hired to be funny, not to be funny. I don't buy that. The Theismann thing maybe somewhat true.

Posted by: Stro | October 12, 2006 3:56 PM | Report abuse

Annapolis says: "Think about this...... Maybe the Redskins traded for Duckett so that the Eagles would not get him"

That's just stupid. You simply can't do things like that in the salary cap era. You can't waste roster spots on useless players, that's Raiders-like. Not to mention the absolutely bizarre trade conditions the Redskins agreed to.

Why would the Redskins need to block the Eagles? Run defense seems to be one of our few strengths (Tiki exempted)

You also can't have loyalty in the salary cap era. You don't need the Pats ruthlessness, but it's all about production now.

Posted by: tallbear | October 12, 2006 4:03 PM | Report abuse

Have you heard him and Wilbon go at on PTI? He is funny most times on PTI. Some of the things he says on PTI would not go over on MNF.

Posted by: jm220 | October 12, 2006 4:04 PM | Report abuse

Is that a Cheers reference? wow

Swoop is still young (and therefore makes occasional mistakes), but his freakish abilities put him near the top of the safety class. Remember, a safety has to rely on his CBs, and his partner... who, in this case, happens to dwell in the bottom tier of cover safeties in the NFL.

Anyone claiming Swoop as anything less than spectacular is looking real hard for things to complain about.

Posted by: Bucktown Skins Fan | October 12, 2006 4:05 PM | Report abuse

Interesting question for the group...what's your dream MNF team? I'd have to include Riggo in that bunch, but I can't think of a great play-by-play guy I'd want.

I love Al Michaels, but he's wedded to SNF. And I love Joe Buck, but he's wedded to Fox.

Posted by: P Diddy | October 12, 2006 4:05 PM | Report abuse

I agree with Riggo and Joe Buck for the MNF team. However, but is killing the FOX NFL Show before the games. Bring back JB.

Posted by: jm220 | October 12, 2006 4:08 PM | Report abuse

I agree that TK is funny on PTI. I like that show alot. I think that kind of stuff would work on MNF. Howard Cossell never cared what people would think before he said it. Good humor and commentary requires taking risks. TK needs to take over that booth and make it his. Mix it up and be funny.

BOOYAKASHOT Bucktown! Nice work.

Posted by: The Governor | October 12, 2006 4:10 PM | Report abuse

My comments weren't about ST. My comments were about whether or it was a great personnel decision.

Peyton Manning is a great QB but are gonna give the GM of the Colts credit for picking him? I mean if you hadn't you'd have been an idiot.

Cooley was a great pull. Smoot was a good pull. Goldsten is a great pull.

Posted by: Skinz | October 12, 2006 4:11 PM | Report abuse

Maybe so Stro.

From TK himself in his Oct. 4 column:

"After four regular season games, I've found that what's most frustrating to me about "Monday Night Football" isn't what I'm saying, it's what I'm not saying."

And now it is 5 weeks.

From Len Shapiro, earlier this week:

"--Theismann talks too much. Big surprise there, right? Joe T came out of the womb with the vocal cords of a carnival barker and he hasn't stopped yapping since. During one second-quarter stretch of the Denver-Baltimore game, I timed his comments at about 15 seconds per pop, sometimes maddeningly longer. Tony K's remarks were about half that length, occasionally only a few words, and it made me more mad. TK needs to fight for more air time, and Joe T needs a muzzle or a tonsillectomy.

And more ....

"--Tony K and Joey T have all the chemistry of the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Theismann wants to talk football, and more football, but X's and O's have never been Tony's greatest strength. He's far better skewering people, taking his best shots at their looks, the way they sound, making mischief, deflating egos. You'd like to think that's why ESPN hired him in the first place. It definitely was not to dissect cover-two defenses."

I agree!

Posted by: tmac | October 12, 2006 4:18 PM | Report abuse's just a of Philly's glaring weaknesses is at running back and Duckett would make them a better offensive unit than what they are now. And besides that, Gibbs, Vinny and Danny treat draft picks like the plague.

I don't think Duckett was questionable if Portis is out with that shoulder, and Betts has to b the #1 back. Also, Gibbs doesn't appear to want Rock running with the rock on offense. It would be nice to see him in there but you've got Sellers as lead fullback stud. Certainly with all healthy, Duckett looks like an idiot move because China Springs is still lame and the replacements have played D plus at best. I am first in line to say Rogers is not what they hoped for. The Archuletta deal was just plain stupid. I'm willing to be more patient with Rubin's kid.

I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt for most roster moves. Not with the Duckett trade. Sorry, it was a desparation move at a position of relative strength at a premium cost.

It remains a dumb move until proven otherwise. This nonsense about keeping him from the Eagles does not make it better.

Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | October 12, 2006 4:47 PM | Report abuse

I think they traded for duckett for 2 reasons:

1) backup
2) Give the other RBs (not CP) a scare and make them PLAY to there potential.
- Rocks kickoff returns are much better then last years
- Betts is playing like he can be a starter on some teams.
- Sellers is focusing on blocking and doing a hell of a job doing it too.

Just a thought. We all know that Gibbs use to do these things back in the day, maybe this is another motivational tool he is using.

Posted by: Stro | October 12, 2006 5:03 PM | Report abuse

Can TJ Duckett cover wide receivers? No. And JLC says he might not even be on the game roster this weekend. Meanwhile, we are in desperate need of a CB. We were deep at WR and RB coming into the season. It was obvious we needed help in the secondary, and perhaps some depth on the D-line. We didn't need Duckett, and it would be great if we could get a cover CB for him, but cover CBs are hard to come by. I don't think any team will give up a good cover CB for Duckett. So we're stuck with him, and maybe we will start to work him in there on 3rd and 4th and shorts. I mean he's one of the best short yardage backs in the league, if not THE best!! Why don't we use his ability?? He can pretty much do what the Bus did for Pittsburgh. He was always good for 1-2 yards.

Hear, hear, Megskin. Give JLC the credit he deserves.

Hey all I just want to clear up something. My screen name has caused a bit of confusion and I'd like to set the record straight so nothing more comes of it. The "Dame" in MV Dame does not refer to my being a female. And that's because I am not a female.

It was more a play off of Notre Dame, but also a direct nickname gleaned from my given name. (Think Son of the Devil.) I'm flattered if any guys here are crushin' on me, just know that it's another guy you're crushing on. Ladies, feel free to crush all you want.

Enough said. Sorry for the distraction. Now on to football...

My take on Springs is that if he's ready to play, I'd love to have him on the field. Sad to hear of no Dolemite Jenkins sightings. I was looking forward to CP doing an entire rendition of Napoleon Dynamite's dance upon scoring his first touchdown this weekend.

Keeping hope alive.

I've got it. The absolute perfect trade. Randy Moss for TJ and Lloyd. Moss wants out of Oakland, he's better off here.

Its not gonna be often when a player is better off going to Oakland, but at least they'll throw it in Lloyd's direction. And TJ can suit up, get some carries.

Whats the worst that can happen, trade two mistakes for one?

Posted by: AL | October 12, 2006 7:09 PM | Report abuse

that's a terrible trade idea... the worst that could happen is a lot worse than i think you are imagining. I like our Moss best, and he's much less polarizing. Besides, randy has no respect for the Redskins, that was obvious when he was on the vikings.

Duckett could end up being a fixture for the Redskins, and that wouldn't be bad, just he needs to be an active fixture. Maybe he'll swap some fullback duties with Sellers, maybe he'll grow into a 3rd-down back, and h-back even, who knows, but he's got great potential and deserves better use, on that I think we can all agree.

if we must trade him though there are a lot more positions we need help at before adding to WR-depth.

oh yeah, and who can't foresee A LOT of Campbell-to-Lloyd touchdown passes for the next six years? it'll be beautiful.

The season is over. Joe Gibbs shouldn't be a coach in the NFL. He can't coach at all, he doesn't even have the heart to watch half of the plays anymore. Derrick Frost punts on 4th down in the first quarter and Joe Gibbs has to close his eyes because it's too much for him to handle. Gregg Williams (the second G stands for gay) is not a genius. We bought the hype for 2 years but no more. He let his ego get the best of him, pretending he could literally take the trash of the NFL and turn them into superstars. Warrick Holdman? Andre Carter? Mike Rumph? Are we really serious? There should be a stat for how many blitzes attempted per game per sack actually gotten. I bet we would be at the bottom of the league by a lot. It's like, practically every single blitz is picked up. The ones that aren't picked up don't matter because the blitz comes so late (either the blitzer starts 5 years behind the line or he hesistates i.e. LeMar Marshall against the Giants). Archuleta is possibly the worst safety in the league. I hate this team.

Wouldn't you? I know I watch the game looking out between my fingers, the barfbucket nearby in case of punting or kicking situations--heck, I don't even think it's that unusual.

Gregg Williams (the second G stands for gay)

Do you know something we don't? And even if he is a homosexual why would that have any bearing on how good a coach he is or not? Stooping to pick on peoples sexuality is immature; I fear this post is going downhill fast.

Are we really serious?

Unfortunately it appears you are *sigh*

Archuleta is possibly the worst safety in the league

Possibly, but doubtful. At some point he will "possibly" make us all eat our words. We can only hope.

I hate this team.

Well, hugs all around then. My suggestion: call a shrink. If you're using the word 'hate', you're taking this way too seriously.

Maybe he meant he is always happy, particularly with that smirky grin.

Possibly coolio, possibly.

I think that'll be my word of the day--too bad today is over in about 10 minutes :P

Hey Megskin:

It's nice to see that when it got to the points where I really addressed Greg(g) William's flaws, you had no smart remark to make about that. And yes, Joe Gibbs does not have the heart it takes to be an NFL coach anymore. What's he responsible for anyway? Being the "CEO" figure? Keeping everything running smoothly? Last I checked, this team's discipline wasn't that great (numerous penalties, awful tackling, etc.), and if that is something he cannot control, than what is he good for. It would be nice see some fire in the head coach, as opposed to awful cackling at every press conference. So you still believe Greg(g) Williams is a genius? Einstein was a genius. Descartes was a genius. Da Vinci was a genius. Greg(g) Williams still blitzes Archuleta so he can get picked off by a 200 pound running back and thrown on his face. That is not genius.

I didn't take your post seriously because your arguments are vacuous. Grilliams gets called a homosexual because his defense sucks this year? That's reason enough to dismiss the entire post alone.

But since you're back--I'll humor you.

Grilliams gets a pass this year because of his record over time. He has proven time and time and time again that he can post a top 5 defense--even with limited talent; as long as they do what he says and plays how he wants them to. But Ohhnoees, the defense is not up to par this year, let's rail against him and call him names and devalue the "Genius" tag. The only flaw(s) you pointed out are him believing in his players--we should all be so lucky. Is he going to be successful every year? We can hope, but you know what Buddy Ryan didn't have a great defense every single year, Don Shula, who made a name for himself with defense, went through years of having crappy defense while Marino was there. Life is hard sometimes, and even if your great, things beyond a coaches control effect the outcome of a play, a game, a season. Deal with it.

What the hell problem do you have with Joe Gibbs? He's won three super bowls and been in four, I'll take that experience over Norv Turner, MartyBall and Steve Spurrier anyday. If he wants to play CEO, all the best to him; frankly I think he sucks as a GM; I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again before the year is out. But that doesn't mean that he isn't great at getting the best out of his players--does he have to be calling plays from the sidelines to do that--I think not.

Oh yeah, and the whole thing about Descartes, Einstein and Da Vinci was asinine. Go take a valium.

Skinsfan 202,

If you spend time on this blog you should know by now you don't mess with the queen bee.

As for Grilliams being a genius. When ever I have a football question I go to the all knowing football god. On earth he goes by the name Joe ThEEEEseman. (He is a god. If you don't beleive me , just ask him.)

Here is his quote on football genius:

"Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein."

"vacuous" huh? I had to look that one up.

I want to get in on the blog comment party.

Did anyone see this satirical letter from our favorite long snapper about his Madden rating ? Hilarious...

Skins Fan 202 successfully demostrated his lack of football knowledge. Number one rule here is never bismirch the hallowed Joesph Gibbs. What has he done? Are you out of f*@$ing mind? Not too many teams with a coach with 4 Super Bowl appearences, and Hall of Fame status are there? You come across as bitter and a dult. Save your irrelavent banter for people who can tolerate your knuckle dragging outlook on life.

hey meg, i also think blogs are mostly about the authors. if the author wasn't good then why would bloggers come to read the author. case in point
and i sorta implied that when i said "except maskey" (i hope i'm spelling his name right).

but imho i think this is different in that you have a sort of monopoly (again my opinion) news site, a team that is supported, check that obsessed over by so many fans that it matters little who's hosting the blog.

for example...i think i'm an average skins fan...and i used to listen to 570(now 980) and i HATED ken beatrice's voice and the way he talked but i still tuned in cuz he was talking about the skins.

yes, jason being a good blogger helps but this blog wouldn't be doomed if they replaced him with say howard bryant. again it's just my opinion. i may be wrong about the passion and obsession that is skinsmania.

also, i try to (try being the keyword) write like tony k. without the smileys and the i wasn't serious about the chimp...

did i mention my brain's fried!!!

have a good weekend!!! we need to make rules about how excited you can get after they kill the titans...
ps...i had a dream last night that they lost to the titans...

dealer, yup, I think you're right on about the support of the blog--it helps that Redskins Nation is almost a religion. I think you would see a big difference if someone else were running the blog though; it's all about the person, how they present themselves, how they deal with commentators, the content they provide etc. etc. etc. I could go on but I'm way too tired at the moment.

Just a random question, but if you hate the team..why have your name be skins fan? Obviously you are not, so please, don't degrade the rest of the redskins faithful by using that term.
