Springs Says He May Have Strained Calf

Jason La Canfora texts in this update:

Shawn Springs says he fears he strained his calf. He said he heard something in it pop, but thinks he might be back for next Sunday's game against the Eagles. He'll said he'll see how it responds to treatment this week.

Here it is, we will either be 3-2 or 4-1 coming home to the AWFUL Rams and shaky Browns. MUST WINS. We should be at minimum 5-2 . Then we go to, wait for it... DETROIT! 6-2 at worst going into the Monday Night game with Pitt. If that happens. Well, I dont know what I will do! So glad to have season tix! HAIL HAIL! F DALLAS!

BLOWN CALL IN DALLAS
Posted by Mike Florio on September 28, 2008, 6:39 p.m. EDT

On the same day it was announced that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will pay $25,000 for publicly criticizing referee Ed Hochuli, the zebras made like Sgt. Schulz as punt returner Pacman Jones was getting the Linda Blair treatment, courtesy of a Redskins player’s hand on Pacman’s facemask.

Rarely are such blatant violations of the rules not flagged.

We’re not suggesting that the officials were trying to stick it to Jones and his Cowboys; Dallas has gotten most of the calls so far during Sunday’s game against the Redskins. But we are suggesting (in fact, we’re flat-out saying) that the entire crew had their heads somewhere other than on their shoulders during the play in question.

Dear Coach Zorn, congratulations on the win. You are exceeding expectations and may earn a raise this year. BUT!!!
Please don't ever pull a Coach Gibbs (May those who won championships with him revere him forever) again and decide to run the ball and TRY NOT TO LOSE!!! This is the NFL wher you have to try to win. You have coached up a real QB, some real receivers, and some real RBs. Use them to try to win games from now on. Enough with the try not to lose. You got lucky, bubba.
Thank you and good luck in the future.
Sincerely,
Neil in Durango

Awesome game, key contributions from all aspects and positions.

The thing about this Skins team is they have confidence and can close teams out, vs. prior Skins teams of recent years where it felt like they were holding on and hoping not to lose.

I give Zorn a ton of credit for the personality infusion of the team.

Oh, and I think a few days ago I predicted Dallas 31, Redskins 14....glad I was wrong.

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 28, 2008 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Neilbourjaily,

You are wrong about Zorn today.
The skins were up 6 points, they were on the road, they forced the 'Girls to use up 2 of their 3 Time outs, and they were down deep enough, the FG attempt was only for 29 yards!

Zorn was right to keep running, it chewed up 6 minutes off of the clock!!!

Zorn elected to run because it put us up two scores! It was the defense who gave up drives at the end of both halves that made the game much closer than it needed to be.

Hail Zorn, Hail JC,

HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!!!!

Huge win. In terms of the divison we're now playing with house money. Regardless of the outcome in Philly next week and assuming the Skins can take care of business in at least 2 of the division games at FedEx, the Skins should still be in the mix for the division title. Not saying we'll get it, but still be in the mix in December. HAIL!

Wow....Just Wow.

The Redskins won. Everyone thought we would fail this year. I told myself I would not give an opinion on this this team until after the 4th game.

Well, job well done. We are serious, but I'd rather we stay under the radar. Which I believe we will regardless of the win...........

Posted by: 4thFloor | September 28, 2008 8:38 PM | Report abuse

What a win!

Possesion time was mind-blowing--38 minutes to 22 minutes.

No offensive turnovers yet this season.

A 7th-round rookie playing like an all-pro.

Springs and Smoot shutting TO down--how great was that late-game series with three incompletes to TO, all defended tight by SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!

O-line is playing a million times better than I expected.

And above all Jason C is emerging as the quarterback we hoped he could be. Good decision after good decision. Strong leader. Cool under pressure.

This is what I thought we'd see with the return of Joe Gibbs.

Vinny, Danny--I've never done this before--I compliment you on your choice of a head coach.

Now, everybody, you've won nothing yet. Back to work. Eagles next week.

The biggest difference between Zorn's team and Gibbs' team last year is that last year, the team kept losing games down in the second half - especially in the fourth quarter. And often with stupid mistakes.

Zorn's team has been unbeatable after the break. Not since the days of "Riggo left, Riggo right, Riggo out the door," has it been so much fun to watch the last ten minutes of a game when the Skins are in front.

RedskinsRay, I think that the decision to run the ball and eat minutes was a good one at the end, but the decision not to try to put it into the endzone was Gibbs- (may his cars run like Riggins)like. You do eat the clock. Then you do try to put it into the endzone. They didn't even try to put it in. (As the old man used to say, "Put some hair on that goal line and stick it in!") As far as the D, well, that's more of that ill-fated prevent defense thinking. Even Joe Buck, dumber than a duck, saw that the D was giving the underneath stuff. That's no way to try to win. You gotta grab the throat and squeeze, squeeze, squeeze.

Posted by: neilbourjaily | September 28, 2008 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Now that I am coming down from my high, I am able to see somethings I did not earlier.
I mentioned time of possession was huge difference, also the punting of Brooks was very effective.

Now, think about this:
Suisham was 4 out of 4 FG needed each one

Rogers defended well today
OL maintained time of possession

JC converting some key 3rd downs

How about Kick off and Punt Coverage teams?

This was really a team effort and all of it was needed to get by by two points.

We are not ordering SB tickets just yet folks, but it is fun to need a team effort and to get it!!

This is what I'm talking about!!! After all those GibbsII games of losing in the fourth quarter! This is a hell of a win, I love it. Marion the Barbarian?, how about Marion the Octagenerian, only 26 yards rushing. Zorn looks like a bona fide NFL coach. Campbell looks like a bona fide NFL quarterback, and just think weeks ago everyone was calling him a bum. Hats off to Jason for ignoring the criticism and elevating his game, when a play breaks down and a QB can make something out of nothing you've got a player back there. Still would like to see a better pass rush out of the D, no sacks on Romo today, but overall the D played great, and Mr.Blache deserves a lot of credit. This is huge, lets enjoy it tonight and tommorow and get ready to kick Philly's ass in their back yard next week!! Hail to the REDSKINS MF'S!!!

Looks like Marion is not our only b!itch!!!

"The reality of it is, you have the opportunity to go 16-0 every year in the regular season, but that's not realistic," said Romo, 1-3 against Washington and 22-6 against everyone else. "We're a confident bunch. I think we'll come back next week with a lot to prove."

A couple of things:

1. HTTR! F DALLAS! (Ok, that's out of the way!)

2. The face mask penalty - I don't know who the source was for that comment, yeah, he probably got the mask, but it wasn't that easy to pick up and call as a ref. Secondly, with a new set of rules, with face mask as an automatic 15 yard penalty (always a personal foul) I think the refs are also looking for a "higher standard" then that particular play to call the face mask on.

3. Lots of folks here felt that we'd automatically be rebuilding, because Zorn was a new coach. Hey, we've got the players, and it was just a question of using them effectively.

4. Last, but not least I LOVED the way that the Cowboys jumped around, pounded their chests and acted crazy every time they did anything even slightly positive. Meanwhile, the Redskins just went about their business quietly and got the job done.

And I'd loved to know what Bugel and Zorn were laughing about at the end of the last drive.

How 'bout them Redskins!

Anybody else notice how much the players are buying to the Zorn way? Even the defensive players are giving it up to him, even though he barely gets involved in the D. This is going to pay big dividends in the off season when we are trying to get those one or two key free agents.

How about Santana Moss? When he came here he was a thug. I don't know if Joe Gibbs taught him something or if he just grew up, but he is a pleasure to watch, to see interviewed, and apparently in the locker room. he is repectful of the other team as well as his own, on the field and after the game, and really seems to be a leader.

Last, even though I was NOT one of the idiots calling for Colt Brennan after week 1, I also did not think JC had this kind of consistant play week after week. I don't think the Saints defense was that healthy or god, and we always seem to find a way against Arizona, but after today I am drinking the JC Kool-aid! HTTR

The Skins 4th string corners were in, with Smoot and Springs out. It was pretty smart for the Pies to attack the inexperienced secondary with their vaunted aerial attack. Hard to fault the strategy, it's not like their running game was ripping off big runs at any point.

Not really. Barber couldn't run against the 'Skins and he's never been able to run against the 'Skins. He was nothing against us last year when he was Pro Bowl.

How many RBs are going to be effective on 8 carries? Last time Dallas beat us, Barber didnt light it up, but he had 15 attempts, and Jones had 9 attempts. That puts pressure on the defense, even if the play is for no gain.

Coming down off of my high??

Well, I am probably alot older than you.
I've learned over the years I get too high, too optimistic, too naive...
then set my expectations too high for the Skins and am extremely disappointed.

So, I went back looked at many stats, and saw where SO MANY things went well today:
Suisham, Brooks, JC, Moss, CP, coverage teams on both punts and kickoffs....

It all went well, and we won by two points.
So, Dallas is still a great team, and us?

We are improving, are confident, and we just blindsided Dallas and all NFL experts.

We are now 3-1 so will not be able to sneak up on anyone else this year.

But aren't really enjoying it!!!

I am still not a Chris Horton believer (I know, I know), but he is very exciting and seems to have a nose for the ball. He did either make a hell of a read and react, or got really lucky they didn't go to the spot on the field where he was supposed to be, but either way, unlike the rest of our DB's he CAUGHT THE BALL! He may be the best first option we have this year.

On to Philly. They only have two dangerous receivers and one of them is a rookie, but we need to have Springs back. He is the one that makes this defense go. When he is in, we can play man up and help out on the run and pass rush. When he is not there, we get no pass rush because we have to keep more back in coverage. Get well quick Shawn!

Its funny to go to espn and look at the conversation on this game or dallas' site. We have people that are fans of the Skins that may complain about the front office, and everything seems to go from there. But are fans arent the product of a marketing machine that created "Americas Team". We stick with em. Not hop on and off the bandwagon like sorry Cowgirl fans. But I see people calling for Wade Phillips head. 16-4, FIRE HIM! Its pretty funny. Jason Garrett has shown he will give up on the run quickly. He did it last year in the second half against the Giants, and the Girls had like a 100 yards in the first half. He gave up on it too quickly today, THANK GOD! HTTR!

Posted by: mattsoundworld | September 28, 2008 9:26 PM |

The Skins 4th string corners were in, with Smoot and Springs out. It was pretty smart for the Pies to attack the inexperienced secondary with their vaunted aerial attack. Hard to fault the strategy, it's not like their running game was ripping off big runs at any point.

I've already made the mortal sin of looking at the schedule, but after Philly next week we have STL, CLE, and DET in that order. We then have PITT before our bye week to rest up for the Dallas game at our house to kick off the second half of the season.

So... you do the math. We should be heavily favored in 3 of those games, and if we can pull out 1 vs Pennsylvania, we could be 7-2 with a bye and getting Dallas at home...

Just a thought

One of the good things about living out in So-Cal is that by the time I wake up in the morning football is pretty much ready to begin. I get to sleep through all the mindless drivel that is pre-game shows (ESPN, Fox, CBS, etc.)

Im a bit surprised people are reacting to this so negatively. Thats like Gibbs 101.

And today it was obvious our defense still had some pop at the end of the game, and theirs did not. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that their offense only used up 22 minutes of TOP, leaving 38 to us.

To Chrislarry in reference to Horton.

He needs to be in the place on the field he is supposed to be in, and cover the part of the field that the scheme requires him to cover. You only see the sports center plays. If you were knowledgable about the game you would know that in the Saints game he was in position to cherry pick those deflected passes because he was out of position on the play. And the punt he recovered lay on the ground for at least 5 seconds. Todays interception looks like he made a good read of Romo's eyes and a great break on the ball. That is wonderful, but it is one of many and the fact is most of the time he is out of position in pass coverage. He does have good closing speed, and isn't afraid of contact which is good. If you go back and look at the few good runs Barber did have, see who he juked and ran over. There is a reason he lasted until the 7th round in the draft, and it isn't because he is the 2nd coming of Ronnie Lott. At least not yet.

Having said all that, he is a rookie and deserves some time. I was not talking down about him, only pointing out we are weak at that position with him and Doughty. We need Springs in there so we only have to play one of those guys at a time.

I have not watched much of the Boyz this year. Due to my propensity to Vomit upon seeing silver and blue stars. But I heard they had drafted some dynamo from Arkansas to return kicks and be a one two punch with The Barbie doll, I mean Barbarian. Did he play today? HEE HEE!

Posted by: Club320 | September 28, 2008 9:57 PM | Report abuse

HTTR!!!! I'm going to feel wonderful all week long! Woohoo!!!

Ok, here are my thoughts:

--Cowboys abandoned the run in the 2nd half. The way the Skins were stopping it (plus the banged-up secondary), you could figure that the Cowboys would go big to the passing game. But abandoning the run completely on a nasty 95-degree day in Big D was just, well, dumb. Bad coaching. The Cowboys clearly have a lot of talent, but I don't think their coaching staff is up to the task.

--Along the same lines, this is like so many Cowboys games I've seen in the Romo era. They can't take a punch. Kudos to the Redskins D, which was hitting *hard* all day. They didn't sack Romo, but they hit him hard a couple of times and clearly got into his head late in the game. And the Dallas receivers almost always went down hard immediately upon catching the ball. Whatever the Skins D was drinking before the game, I want some...

--Jason Campbell is blossoming as a QB right before our eyes. My dad is a huge Skins fan out in Oregon and doesn't get many opportunities to see the Skins on TV. After the game, he told me on the phone how truly impressed he was by JC today. He's not going to perform like this every week, but I think we can safely say that no one with a brain is going to be calling for Colt anytime soon. :)

Ok, I'll shut up now. :)

I'm just on Cloud 9 after that game. Seeing Jerry Jones on the sideline looking like wants to throw up is, well, PRICELESS!!!!

Just in time, the 'Woeful Wade' factor's starting to kick in for the cowgirlies, and not a moment too soon.
Let's brag a little; without those penalties this game's a blowout. We saw more of how a well-tuned West Coast offense should work: mixing pass and run early, keeping the defense off-balanced and chasing, then pound in the second half. You have to like JC's steady demeanor vs. Romo's flash, as I believe I've predicted for some time now. I thought last week's win was big, but this one may be the type of victory that not only gets the rest of the league noticing, but begins to push the Skins back into the upper echelons of teams in the League.
Snyder needs to spend some cash and refurbish the field level seats with hydraulic jacks a la RFK, so when Dallas comes to town again that stadium will rock like the good 'ole days.

This was an awesome game. JC played marvelously. I was surprised how much running room the offensive line generated. My only negative about the game is that it seemed like on every play that our secondary got torched Doughty was covering that side of the field and two steps behind whoever made a big catch for Dallas. Sit Doughty, let him be a tutor in the schemes, and play Horton. Horton doesn't have that much of a learning curve anyways, getting 85% of the scheme in college.

Awesome win! Much to be proud of, particularly the play of JC. Once again, he made some clutch throws and great decisions all game.

Great play calling on both sides of the ball. Still concerned about the lack of pocket pressure on D, and the play of Doughty. Loving the Zorn.

I wouldn't worry so much about the lack of sacks against Romo or the catches that the Cowgirls piled up. Romo may be a goofball, but he has a quick release and is very good at avoiding pressure. He doesn't get sacked that often. And the Cowgirls *do* have a powerful passing game. Look at how many points they piled up against the Beagles, who went on to terrorize the Steelers the next week.

The NFC East is a beast, and I'm thrilled to death that the Skins are right in the mix. They may or may not win the division in the end, but they are going to be in it...and that's all you can ask for in Week 4.

OK one last post to Matt,

Sorry you are personally offended while I speak to someone else, but since you are i will say this. You also have no knowledge of the game if you can't look at a defensive set, watch the play develop, and see one guy wandering around looking foe something to do. it is hard to see from your living room I know, but it is very very easy to see if you are sitting in the end zone at fedex with thewhole play in front of you. One thing you got right is the reason Horton is in is because Doughty was out of position giving up a score in both the Saints and Cardinals games. His being awful does not mean Horton is good, just means he gets a chance. And again, noone is hating on Horton, he is a rookie and deserves some slack. The point is that it is a weak position on our team. We have a non drafted free agent invitee who barely made it off the practice squad or a 7th round rookie. What about this do you not understand or think that Gregg Blache would comment about in public? Do you think he would say that in public about any of his players? No he wouldn't because he is a class act. As we already said he also doesnt have alot of options so he can't very easily tear them down. You also haven't heard him talk much about Doughty even though even you saw him miss a coverage last week.

Have a nice night all. Enjoy this, it has only happened twice in 14 years. HTTR
