Stephon Heyer may not play in Redskins game against New York Giants

Right tackle Stephon Heyer (knee) sat out practice again Friday and might be sidelined Monday night against the New York Giants. Former practice squad member William Robinson would start if Heyer does not play.

"We're still holding out Stephon Heyer," Coach Jim Zorn said. "We had him out there watching but we didn't practice him. I'm disappointed that his knee hasn't come around as fast as had a week ago. He tweaked it a little bit early in the week."

In his second season from San Diego State, Robinson was recently signed from the practice squad. He would be making his career debut against Giants Pro Bowl defensive end Justin Tuck.
"Here we go. He's gonna have a great challenge ahead of him," Zorn said. "That's who we have and that's who we'll play if Stephon can't go. He's going to be working against Tuck right off the bat."

And what does Robinson do well?

"Ah, we, we don't -- we'll find out as we go along and then try to help him if we can," Zorn said. "What I like about what he's doing is he's giving great effort. He's got good feet. He's enthusiastic. He's got a good punch. He seems to be athletic. He's not a slow guy. But a lot of the things that we'll find out will be kind of a find out as you go."

The Redskins could shift right guard Mike Williams to right tackle "but Mike hasn't had any reps at all in the last two weeks," Zorn said. "We've been trying to give Mike as many reps at guard as we possibly can. He's really coming on strong. I want to keep that going. And we'll just try to help will out any way we can."

Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (ankle) participated fully in practice and is expected to play against the Giants. Haynesworth has missed three of the last four games. Cornerback DeAngelo Hall (knee) and fullback Mike Sellers (thigh) were limited.

JZ is not gonna get run because he is not a good guy, or for lack of effort, or because his team quit on him. He is a great guy, gives 200% of his heart and soul into his efforts, and the team is still playing their azzes off.

He is gonna get run because he mismanages game day decisions, his play calling is suspect, and he failed to develop his young players quickly enough when it mattered.

It doesn't get any better than Jim Zorn's comments about what Robinson does well and why BMW won't take Heyer's spot.

The best part is that Zorn is serious when he says this stuff.

Is Zorn actually trying to get Campbell injured?

Posted by: PortisPocketsStr8 | December 18, 2009 2:56 PM | Report abuse

I think the idea here is:

1 good guard + 1 crappy tackle is better than

1 crappy guard + 1 crappy tackle

See this way JC only has to run away from 1 defender instead of 2.

Nate,
Portland would have been a good school for Zorn to coach at. What about Western Oregon, Western Washington or Humboldt St. Some Division II schools

BTW did the Humboldt St Fighting Bongwaters do this year?

Does anyone want to talk about how we can go through the next draft without drafting offensive tackles? Anyone?

The guy starting at right tackle this week has never played a snap in a regular season game, and was not on any roster this season until the Redskins signed him in October. The Redskins are starting this guy, who probably won't be with the team next year, against last years' Super Bowl champs and he will be asked to block one of the best Defensive linemen in the league.

Much as peeps on this blog love to hate Danny Boy you gots to admit the dude has made some good moves of late.

1. Apologizing to the fans for a sucko season.

2. Axing ticket holders how to improve the experience.

3. Keeping Zornum on as HC even though the reflexive reaction would be to cut him up in small pieces and feed him to to the fishies.

4. Axing Ceratto who was becoming a PR nightmare.

5. Hiring a GM. Plus the dude has ties to Skins glory years.

6. Hiring the GM before the end of the season to get a head start on HC search and rebuilding the team.

I find these persistent rumors about Shanahan coming on board immediately VERY disturbing.

Yesterday felt like a positive. But today not so much.

Bruce Allen said yesterday "we have a coach - Jim Zorn - and I look forward to getting to know him." Today, the media keeps saying Shanahan is on the way NOW.

We have 3 games left - please let's concentrate on winning them and looking for a new coach when the season ends.

This is disrespectful and reeks of the same old regime.

couple more tidbits from ESPN insider rumors:

Allen hiring Redskins icon soon?

While we sort through all the rumors zipping around the Internet about Mike Shanahan coming in to coach the Washington Redskins, a man who works for another NFL team -- but who guided the Redskins to a Super Bowl as a quarterback -- might be brought in the mix too.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers director of pro personnel Doug Williams could be headed to Washington to take on a similar position, according to some speculation from Bucs blog Joe Bucs Fan. There has already been some indication that Williams would not be retained by the Bucs following this season, and a return to Washington would have a symbolic impact, not to mention the actual capacity that Williams has shown for the job.
No playoffs means Phillips is cooked?

There was a lot going on this week in Big D. Some speculation centered around the possible change at placekicker from Nick Folk to David Buehler, and the situation with DeMarcus Ware was also captivating, as the sackmaster tries to come back and play after suffering a scary neck injury this past Sunday.

It's almost enough to forget that the Cowboys have a coach on the hot seat. But on Friday, team owner Jerry Jones made an appearance on KRLD-FM in Dallas and had some words that should re-direct our attention. "The outcome of games ultimately do weigh in on decisions," Jones said. "And the ones at the end probably have a little bit more weight than the ones at the beginning of the season."

Pressed to declare whether or not the next three games would determine Wade's future in Dallas, Jones replied, "We need to be successful in these next three games, and we need to get into the playoffs. It's going to be very disappointing if we don't." Those who read between the lines should be able to get what he means there.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Perhaps this is why we're working on Shanny so hard?

A couple of comments about this post.

1. There will be a lot of teams chasing a few good HC candidates when the season ends. It is never too early to target one of the good candidates and plotting how to bag the forker.

2. Better to concentrate on losing our remaining games to max out the chances we have of selecting the Okie Okung.

Seriously, I think they would have to play some major musical chairs with BMW playing left tackle and Will Montgomery filling his spot at guard. I can't see them putting Will Robinson at left tackle in that situation. Geesh, talk about a nightmare situation...

You want high draft picks? Go root for the Raiders.

This is so SJKed up. What this team needs the most is to win the next three games and build a culture of winning. It is very discouraging for everyone -- particularly the young players -- to be on a losing team, to put out the effort that they're giving and to have it for naught.

The only way we get Okung is by trading up already. At 4 wins we're already picking around 7 no matter what and he's a top 3 pick. IMO we should try and trade back in the first and pick up another second. If we can do that pick up a RB in the late first and two tackles in the second. If we can't trade back then I say we go tackles 1 and 2 and sign Willie Parker.

I guess things are even: Mike Francesca has just announced the jints will be playing without Ross/Webster, their two starting corners.

So we want to add three words to our forecast for the game:

ATTACK

ATTACK

ATTACK

I say 'max protect' and go after the jints' secondary.

Davis and Thomas should get tons 'o catches crossing off 'pick plays' underneath.

I'd play a little press coverage, and get tight on the jints young receivers early while sending Orakpo at Manning from different spots on the d-line.

"The only way we get Okung is by trading up already."

If I'm the GM I ask is one great guy better than two decent guys who can get better.

The skins' offensive line needs to guys who can get better (at the tackle spot) more than one guy.

Picking Okung doesn't fix the other tackle spot.

If there is someone who wants our top pick that'll leave us with another pick in the top rounds (2-4) that, to me, is a better deal.

That way, I snag two top linemen I can train up or start right away.

In '11, I take a 1st round lineman.

It's a slower, more patience way to rebuild the line.

But it makes sense than betting that 1 guy is going to be our savior.

Not to be a pucher of Kool-aid.

There is a lot of talent on this team, couple of places we are lacking. O-line, SAM LB and FS.

This team was about 8 plays or 6 mins away from being 8-5 at this point. If we can cut the game-day mistakes and play harder, next year may be a playoff year for us.

Also, I would rather have Shanny in DC rather than Dallas.

2006:
Davin Joseph, G (1st)
Jeremy Trueblood, OT (2nd)

2007:
Gaines Adams, DE (1st)
Arron Sears, G (2nd)
Sabby Piscatelli, FS (2nd)

2008:
Aqib Talib, CB (1st)
Dexter Jackson, WR (2nd)

Well, if anything, he's not allergic to offensive linemen, so that's a plus.

Fantasy semifinals...would you start- Redskins or Chiefs (at home against Browns) Defense? We get 1 pt/sack, 2/turnover, 6 for def TD, and lose points for those scored by opponent's offense. I know KC is terrible but the Browns couldn't find the end zone with Sacajewea and a Garman.

Thanks for input

Best projection is we'll pick at #7. Okung might be there. If not, I'd trade out of that spot if possible, pick up a late first and 2nd rounder and take best available OT and OG/OT. Take McCluster or best available RB with other 2nd rounder.

Gotta disagree big-time.

If other teams are already courting Shanny, then it is Bruce Allen's job to get snappy with it and start the courtship as well.

Particularly if the decision has already been made to axe Zorn at the end of the season, you want to hit the ground running immediately, which means you are doing due diligence NOW.

Yes, we've got 3 completely meaningless games left, and Zorn will have his opportunity to coach them out.

Disrespect Zorn?

That 4-9 record is disrespectful.

Right side of the line will be weak.

Means we're gonna need savvy creative play-calling to mask that.

Good thing Sherm Lewis is on board.

Bigger upside and risk with KC. If you're a longshot, go with KC. But check the weather. If its wet and windy, all defenses improve ...

Please everyone read this article. I live in Tampa and this is what people here think of Allen and Gruden.

http://www.tampabay.com/sports/football/bucs/with-former-tampa-bay-buccaneers-general-manager-bruce-allen-hired-by-the/1059695

I know Cerrato is the antichrist, but this guy is not the savior. Merry Christmas.

Question:

Why are there so many folks ripping the stuff out of an Allen/Gruden combo, when WE HAVEN'T HIRED GRUDEN???

Posted by: p1funk | December 18, 2009 5:37 PM | Report abuse

Three of the five starting Buccs offensive linemen are Bruce Allen draft picks (Jeff Zuttah/LG, Sears/RG, Trueblood/RT) ... that's a young line. Buccs line is 8th in the league in letting the QB get hit (but admittedly, the QB carousel might mean ball holding too long), but they are in the middle on allowing sacks. They do run right pretty well though.

Because there's still plenty of material on the Allen/Zorn combo ... and hatertude doesn't take a vacation.

We've gotta do something with all the hatred we've become accustomed to directing at Cerrato each day.

For my part, I'm stockpiling my extra vitriol to direct at Owner, The, when he (a) makes a head coach hire that does not please me for whatever reason I choose, or (b) indicates somehow that he has not disengaged from the football decisionmaking.

Firing Vinny is a huge step, but it doesn't take Danny off the hook for, you know, everything else.

I'd take the Redskins. I smell a sack/pick fest against Elisha. I figure at worst its even, but the Redskins have all the upside.

Comment from the TB article

One of my favorite stories about Gruden, and it's a ValricoRick original! Gruden actually has himself, and Dan Synder to thank for his Super Bowl winning quarterback Brad Johnson. Even though when Gruden arrived in Tampa he went after what he thought was a Rich Gannon clone in Rob Johnson, it was he himself who set in motion the actions that decided who his 2002 quarterback would be. When Gruden was in Oakland he had Jeff George, and he didn't want him anymore because he was lazy, and didn't want to practice. Gruden cut him, and Synder fell in love with George's rocket arm. Synder forced George on Shottenheimer, and even forced him into the starting lineup. Well Washington's starting quarterback at the time didn't much care for that and decided to move on and play in Tampa with Dungy because they new each other from the Vikings. That was Brad Johnson! If Gruden doesn't cut George he probably doesn't get Brad Johnson, and Rob Johnson wasn't going to win the Super Bowl. Cool story, huh?

RICH20ssu: Thank you my brutha; not very nice things said about the "troublemint twins" here's what bothers me; not one word about Moroco Brown moving up before they hired da Brucer i mean Brown's been here and with Allen not having a bullet proof resume why not give Brown a shot a la Jerry Reese(NY Giants) Brown's been with the team for a number of years and now he may be gone in favor of Doug Williams(love Doug but what is his experience)Morroco Brown has always been an excellent judge of talent sans Vinny and did Snyder and the Skins perform due dilligence with regards to the Rooney rule as far as interviews of minority candidates are concerned?

Posted by: dargregmag | December 18, 2009 5:59 PM | Report abuse

Brown was probably the guy they gave a "token" interview to take over as GM. He's a good soldier and his time will come with another franchise, so he didn't want to rock the boat and announce to everyone he's the token minority interview.

I grew up and lived 25 years in Germantown and have spend the last 7 in Tampa. Allen is NOT respected here in the least. Time will tell, but that article I posted says it all for now.

Schlereth on sports center just now pointing out the ONLY reason shanahan was fired in Denver was personnel decisions.

see also, e.g.

http://www.gazette.com/articles/free-64772-broncos-memories.html

The names of free-agent busts spill from the memories of Denver Broncos fans very easily.

Simeon Rice. Daryl Gardener. Travis Henry. Niko Koutouvides. Keary Colbert. Dre' Bly.

There are many other failed free agents Mike Shanahan brought in during his 14 seasons as coach. The mistakes cost the Broncos millions of dollars - some were still affecting the team this past offseason - and are a reason Denver has only one playoff win since January 1999.

I would start anybody over Heyer right now, I will never forget they way he got punked against Tambi Hali for a safety lol, Heyer made him looked like Bruce Smith in his prime

Allen/Gruden's record together...38-42.

Not saying he's coming, but if its not that little elf from the Hobbit, Gruden is a close second on Syder's list.

This is why Shanahan-as-GM would be the bad idea. Who has Bruce Allen picked (in OAK and TB)?

Posted by: dcsween | December 18, 2009 4:57 PM | Report abuse

dcsween:

I put then up earlier today. Here they are again if the info is correct.

Thought you might be interested in BRUCE ALLEN's body of work in the first round.

RAIDERS #1 picks while BRUCE ALLEN was with the org. 1995-2004.

OL = 3
RB = 1
QB = 0
WR = 0
TE = 1
DT = 0
DE = 2
LB = 1
CB = 3
S == 1
K == 1
P == 0

13 choices in nine years. Multiple first round picks in '98, '02, and '03.

Picking a kicker in the first sounds shaky. Still he has a propensity for..........O-LINEMEN and CB's. Yes-s-s-s!!!!!! Three each, topping the list.

2004-2008 1st round picks for the BUCS while ALLEN was GM.

WR = 1
RB = 1
OG = 1
CB = 1
DE = 1

Again an O-lineman and CB in the five. This is promising.

Of course, the REDSKINS needs will be different, but it's nice to see he's not afraid to draft offensive linemen.

yesterday, the redskins announce bruce allen was named "Executive Vice President/General Manager"

but today, it seems that title doesn't include personnel decisions, which might be handled by a new head coach/GM(but called something else).

The kicker was all Davis' doing...Allen just nodded his head forward and said "yes sir"...

What gives you the impression that he won't have personnel decisions.

Posted by: scampbell1975 | December 18, 2009 6:31 PM | Report abuse

The best GM is the one you don't notice. He makes the right moves most of the time and lets the coaches coach.

Nobody can do that job at 100% accuracy on picking players, they're human beings, but I'd take picking one direction and sticking with it.

Posted by: rich20ssu | December 18, 2009 6:43 PM | Report abuse

along with O-line help, I still think we need to groom a replacement for Fletcher! HB Blades is only 5'10" and I'd rather have a bigger guy there ala Karlos Dansby for instance.
