Suisham Spices Up Kicking Competition

Cornerback Justin Tryon might have entered the game with a bit of job security, but that interception certainly didn't hurt. Life was breathed into a slow quarter when Tryon picked off a Todd Bouman pass and set up the Redskins' first scoring drive.

Redskins quarterback Colt Brennan stepped in to relieve rookie Chase Daniel, and four plays later, the Redskins turned that zero on the scoreboard into a three. Brennan failed to find the first-down marker - he wasn't helped by Edwin Williams' false-start penalty - and after three plays and two net yards, Shaun Suisham trotted onto the field to kick-start the kicking competition.

Suisham's 48-yarder was good, making the score 21-3 and giving the fourth-year kicker a leg up on the competition. (Apologies for the Mike Wise-like joke.)

By the way, the final numbers on Daniel: 3-of-8 for 19 yards. When he left the game, he was tied with Rock Cartwright as the leading rusher - 17 yards on 3 carries. Brennan finished the quarter 2-of-3 passing for 7 yards.

One thing you already know defensive coordinator Greg Blache won't like: the Jaguars have converted 10-of-14 third-down attempts through the first three quarters.
While Tryon offered a hint of redemption for a struggling secondary, some other guys haven't looked so hot, including right tackle Mike Williams, linebacker Robert Henson and the aforementioned Daniel.

Henson got up slowly after one play late in the quarter but was able to walk off the field on his own. On the same play, cornerback Doug Dutch was also stunned and was on the ground for a couple of minutes before exiting to the sideline. He had a stinger and was expected to return to the game.

hey..JR write a story about this "study in contrast"...

Isnt it amazing that a team like the Jags, in the smallest and worst NFL market in the league and who will have to black out home games due to lack of ticket sales....

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2009-08-31-nfl-tickets_N.htm

Has personnel that FAR EXCEED the Redskins in talent.
What if the richest team in the NFL.. the Skins, had a true and experienced GM.. ??
Here's an idea.. Snyder buys the Jags and exchanges uniforms.. Cheaper than paying overpriced and underperforming players and an inexperienced Head Coach..

Barno,
I think we will be much improved over last year. If I just look at the team through rose colored glasses, I see what you see.

Defense: Will have big play potential it didn't have last year and be ranked in the top ten (probably not as high as fourth).

Offense: Improved over last year, much more versatile attack, but will still be inconsistent and occasionally stall at inopportune times. An above average unit with room for improvement.

Teams: More consistent kicking and punting game, but in other ways Teams will continue to look like the pre-season unit well into the regular season.

Bottom line: 10 wins. We will earn a little respect and a shot at the playoffs, where anything could happen. In one more year we will be a force with which to be reckoned.

So let's self-medicate. Cheers!

What? The Jags are 0-3 this preseason in a city where they are struggling to keep the franchise, these are desperate times for the Jags threat of a year long tv blackout for their regular season home games, economic woes engulf the locale, they had better beat the Skins by a wide margin or start backing up the Mayflower moving vans and THE JOLLY ROGER Goddell can start drawing up the paperwork to move the Jag's to Beverly, hills that is, swimming pools, movie stars!!!!.

No rachel it actually was pretty good ... its easy to make mistakes with that level of player in the game.

I think over the long haul I would be more comfortable with the mobile Colt Brennan over Todd Collins if Campbell went down.

Larry Michael just said you can't do muddle huddles on an onside kick anymore.

How long until the NFL decides the offense has to tell the defense the play before the snap?

Posted by: freakzilla | September 3, 2009 10:30 PM | Report abuse

Clegg, have you tried the side view instead of the top-down view? I actually do think the side view is better than the old game tracker, but the new top-down view is confusing.

As I understand new rule, no more than 2 players can hold hands as they run upfield. Last year 4 players would be linked to form a wedge.

As far as kicker goes, my choice is Suisham. I thought both extra points were marginal for Raynor, first on just inside righ upright, then just inside left upright.
