Taylor Will Miss Dallas Game (Updated)

From Barry Svrluga

Defensive end Jason Taylor will be out for this week's Dallas game after having blood released from his left calf muscle, Coach Jim Zorn said.

Taylor was kicked in the calf during the second quarter in yesterday's 24-17 victory over Arizona, but returned to play the entire game. He did not realize he had a problem until last night, Zorn said, when blood began to pool in the leg.

Zorn said Taylor initially went to the hospital early this morning, but did not undergo a 20-minute procedure to relieve the pressure until later this morning.

"He'll be fine," Zorn said. "It's about healing now."

Zorn could not say whether Taylor would be back for the following week against Philadelphia.

...

From Jason la Canfora

Stephon Heyer's shoulder injury could keep him out and Jansen could very well start Sunday, according to Zorn. Heyer would have to practice by Thursday to play, Zorn said.

Wow, bad news!

That sucks, but might be better against the Cowgirls running attack to have Evans in the game more.

Not good, but hope his knee heals further while he is out.

Posted by: AL Zeke etc | September 22, 2008 12:45 PM | Report abuse

CRAP!!!!!!!!!!

Not to sure how he would've done against that line anyway, especially with his injuries.

They need run stoppers and a pass rush up the middle if they want any chance of stopping their offense.

Who is in favor of HORTON replacing DOUGHTY for the dallas game. After DOUGHTY got burnt bad by The Fitz it dont look good for him to keep that starting spot.

Posted by: Great One | September 22, 2008 12:08 PM

I don't recall seeing Doughty on the field after that. At first, he was replaced by Springs. Then later on, I noticed Horton was on the field. Zorn may be right that Doughty is good at getting people where they need to be ... except for himself.

The Barber & Jones combo is impressive and its definitely going to be important to contain their run game. However, pressure on Romo is paramount. Look what happened when the Eagles didn't pressure him. They got torched.

Did James play yesterday?

A kick in the calf?!?!? Is he made out of paper? Where are the warriors I remember from the NFL of my youth? You play hard hurt or not. Life, and especially NFL careers are short and excessively violent. Where are the Youngbloods or Lotts? Hell, even I played a D-III game on a broken leg. I would give my left nut to have the talent to play in the NFL and if giving all I had on the field for my team and the fans shortened my career, so be it. This world is full of those who are too afraid or unable to take their shot. NFL players are blessed by the gods with unreal genetics and skills to play the game we all love so much; get out there and push your body to the limits and if you're Jason Taylor, don't worry about your film career unless you get a disfiguring kick in the face. If you don't like it play golf.

Greg,

I think they will try to pound Barber at the right side and Evans will be better at the point of attack. We will loose some in the pass rush but hopefully carter can step it up, and the DT can get some pressure.

We might have to blitz a little more than usual.

But Evans won't pressure Romo the way Taylor would...

What exactly did Durant Brooks due to deserve the tongue lashing? It came after the hold on the missed 51 yarder, but the hold looked good to me. Overall, I felt like he had a pretty good game. His first was short, but then he boomed that one late in the game when it mattered most. I'm curious to hear what exactly was Zorn so upset about.

A cameraman came up with America's team? I hadn't heard that before. Maybe he was one of those NFL films guys who got laid off. I hope so.

Posted by: will_ga | September 22, 2008 12:43 PM

Yeah, Will. If I recall correctly, it was a cameraman for NFL films or something of the sort who covered Dallas. It was the name of a year in review type deal, I think.

Huge blow if JT can't go. Hopefully the next man up will be ready.

After (being forced into) watching Dallas (e.g., by MNF), I think Barber is the one against whom the Skins have to game plan. Felix Jones is no slouch either. Initially, I was thinking that the Skins do some deception with Taylor dropping to the flat for LB pass coverage (when runs happen) and having Marcus on run stopping ... Taylor was playing some LB yesterday ... but now that seems out. Hopefully Marcus is getting better and will play more ... same with Erasmus James ... I figure Evans is the replacement for Taylor ... but with more rotation at DE.

Skins played two good teams in NO and AZ. And beat them both at home. I think of AZ as perhaps the best of the middle of the pack, they laid a whupping on Miami, who whupped the Pats. To beat AZ suggests the Skins are somewhere around the top ten teams in the league.

Second straight week Campbell plays very well in the 4th with the game on the line. Last season, Campbell did well except in the 4th quarter when games were on the line.

Seems Zorn and Campbell have figured out how to balance WCO and Campbell's talent. And win in the 4th. My 10 win prediction? Looking good ... at the moment.

Brooks called for the snap before the TV timeout was over and made Suisham start his motion. Then Suisham had to stop and go back because the ball was not ready to be snapped, so Zorn was mad because Brooks took Suisham out of his rythym

I would put Springs on TO all day, give him Saftey help, they do not have much else in the passing game except Witten, and he is a beast.

Barber will be the key we have stopped him in the past, so hopefully Blache can do it again.

Posted by: Flounder | September 22, 2008 12:58 PM | Report abuse

Cerrato said Heyer is ok, just sore. Wilson is quick like a cat and could help with pass rush but Evans has actually fared well since packing on some power lifting muscle. The smart bet is for Blache to continue rotating linemen to keep them from getting worn down. Intensity and setting the tone is the key to this match-up. Play action is a major concern with those tight backs for Dallas because we can't win a shootout at this point in the Zorn era. Long, sustained yet creative drives by the Skins offense are a must to keep our D fresh and morale high. If not, if we are flat like at the Giants, it will be a long day for Skins fans.

Cards ran Edge effectively, but he isn't their bread and butter. Dallas is different. Barber IS their bread and butter, they'll run more aggressively than the Cards.

Blache played AZ thinking that an effective run game couldn't beat the Skins. He was right. But vs Dallas, I don't think that strategy works.

Watched the game last night. The key to stopping the girls is stopping Barker. Dude runs through people. He needs to be tackled around the legs or he will run over you.

Dallas loves the play action and running from the shotgun, so to me, the key is stopping the run, which starts with Barber.

Let’s use Ockham’s Razor on the latest Vinny versus JLC controversy re: tampering accusations leveled at the ‘Skins:

1) In the midst of a busy Friday preparing for team and league activities, i.e., games on the weekend, the Raiders and/or the NFL took time away to monitorV inny’s radio show, or very shortly thereafter received a transcript/listened to a recording. From Vinny’s statement about Kiffin, either the Raiders official almost immediately called the League or the League internally discussed whether there was tampering. How likely is it that someone at the League or w/ the Raiders were even aware of or listening to Vinny’s Show? How likely is it that hearing the statement – which obviously in no way could be taken as any kind of interested in Kiffin by the Skins (not to mention it is clear no coaching change in DC is in any way immanent) – that the issue of tampering was raised? Given these two things, which are remote in themselves, the League then alerts Vinny it is looking in to tampering based on the comments he made.

2) JLC, who has had a long standing feud with the Skins FO, especially with Vinny, listens to Vinny’s broadcast on Friday. Upon hearing about the new show, the news apparently so intrigued JLC that he reached out for a source, or sources, to comment on how unusual it is for a person of Vinny’s position to be hosting a radio show (there are of course two problems with this – he mischaracterized Vinny’s role in the show, and second, he sought out only sources who would respond, “Yes, JLC, this is unusual.” The implication of this being the show itself is, if not unethical, not within the bounds of a normal president of football man’s duties in the NFL. So, while listening to the show on Friday, JLC was listening with this bias in mind – that he has come out publically stating that the show is questionable and he needs to back it up further. He is listening for, among other things, anything he feels might bolster this claim. He hears the Kiffin statement. He calls the League, and either asks about tampering or simply relates the Vinny comment and says “some are concerned this could be taken as tampering”? Then, the NFL called the Skins FO to let them know of the “inquiry.”

Think about access, timing, motive, and practicality: it is pretty clear that 2) – JLC as the source of the tampering talk is by far the option that requires the least amount of imagination stretching. Personally, even though I think Vinny is a blowhard who really enjoys this feud with the Post (JLC), he would not have made the accusation about JLC if it were not true. The League told him how they heard about it. It is just as clear to him as it should be to us, for the above reasons. The Jason Taylor incident I think really grated on JLC, and I think since then he’s been digging for something. Vinny went out of the way to snub him, but what’s worse is that JLC was again scooped, and not on a small thing, but a major thing. Did Vinny take glee in that? Probably. Has JLC overplayed his hand by griping about it (using the L word – lying) any chance he gets? Certainly. The question here is whether JLC took this a step further and tried to get Vinny in trouble. If he did, and I think he has, then he should be fired by the Post, or at least moved to cover another team. He’s just gotten too personally involved in it, to the point that his journalistic techniques and integrity are in question. Vinny’s not going anywhere, so JLC will have to.

You mean he wont' have one entire sack in three games like Taylor has?

No, Evans is NOT as good a pass rusher as Taylor was, but then, neither is Taylor.

Being six-six Taylor's afforded the option of doing what smart defenders do when they can't get to the passer--jump and hope to block the pass. Credit to the wily vet for doing that. If the acting doesn't work out, perhaps Jason can try Beach Volleyball for his second career.

But Taylor would have been a stain on the carpet against dallas's run game--and Evans should do better. Too bad the 'skins dont' have another big body to throw out there at LDE, to keep Evans from getting worn down. This could get ugly.

The skins need to get a good hard whallop on Marion Barber early on, to put some fear in him. Like when Ronnie Lott put the smack-down on Ickey Woods in the super bowl. Lott said that the dude had never taken a good hit up til then, and when Lott gave it to him, it ruined his play for the rest of the game (career too, as it turns out). THAT is what we need Dirty 30 to do. Maybe it is a good thing that Taylor won't be in there this week; love his pas rush and knocking passes down, but we need a game like we had against Dallas at the end of last year; no running game at all.

So what's up with all of the blood letting all of a sudden? First K. Campbell, now J Taylor? Is it contagious?

Consider this option, Anon...

Vinny hates JLC and the Post, agreed?

Vinny lies when it benefits Vinny or the team. for instance, he lied to the Post about the Taylor trade.

In Vinny's eyes, having JLC and The Post harmed would benefit Vinny and the Team.

Therefore, Vinny would lie about the Post "leaking" the tampering item.

Yet Anonymous, in his long, "logical" analysis concludes "Vinny)...would not have made the accusation about JLC if it were not true," the exact opposite of the most logical conclusion.

Therefore, using the afforementioned Ockham's Razor, Anonymous is either Vinny, or a Vinny stooge.

By the way, most Poster's think Ockham's Razor is some old linebacker's shaving implement.

Taylor has been disruptive in ways other than sacking the QB. He often pressures the opposing QB and takes away throwing lanes with his long arms -- resulting in poorly thrown passes, incompletions, and occasionally DB interceptions. Plus he still hasn't played at 100% yet...

I'll concur with (dcsween)in the fact that Doughty is good at placing people in the right spot, however, his coverage skills lack the speed needed to cover recievers like Fiz or dare I say it, TO? I think Coach Jackson should rotate the both of them until Horton is able to run it like (Sean T). He sure does hit and ball hawk like him.

Let’s use Ockham’s Razor on the latest Vinny versus JLC controversy re: tampering accusations leveled at the ‘Skins

Posted by: Some Anonymous Clown

Ummm, let's learn how to spell it first, before applying the concept to the non-scientific.

And just for the record: F cHris laRry!

Posted by: The F Guy | September 22, 2008 1:31 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Corkczar, MASTER of the Logical Argument | September 22, 2008 1:23 PM

Cork,

This is different Vinny has no reason to lie, about this. Any reporter can call the league office and ask if this is true or not.

About the JT trade why would Vinny show his hand before the trade was done.

And trust me I do not work for Snyder.

Blache should force Romo to beat him. Agressive play on defense is what is going to be needed. Landry should be playing the cover-1, with press coverage coming from our corners. We need to bring the heat all day long. We may get burnt once or twice, but we cannot let Romo sit back and pick us apart. I don't expect another Week 17 vs. Dallas performance, but I do expect a similar aggressive scheme. It'll be NFC East football at its best. Hit 'em in the mouth and see who's left standing at the end.

Chris Mortensen reported on ESPN today that Taylor will miss the Redskins’ game at Dallas Sunday because he had a medical procedure this morning to alleviate pain and swelling in his shin. Taylor’s shin was kicked in yesterday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, and he woke up in excruciating pain.

Per Mortensen, doctors examined Taylor’s shin today and insisted that they needed to work on it immediately or else Taylor could risk permanent nerve damage.

According to Mortensen, doctors told Taylor he would miss “at least” the Cowboys game, but right now Taylor thinks one game is all he’ll be out.

Easy on Doughty, I know this guys makes some mistakes from time to time, but he has done some great work filling in for Sean T (may he rest in peace), Springs, Rogers, and Landry when they have missed times with injuries and I believe the secondary will be handle TO and Whitten, the rest of the Crackboys recieving crew scares nobody, but they will have to figure out how to stop Barber - that dude is a bruiser. I think the real concern will be the following week against the Philly pass rush - remeber the Giants in week one? That is what scares me.

Posted by: np2131 | September 22, 2008 1:43 PM | Report abuse

When looking at the schedule, you'd have thought if the Skins were 2-3 after the first 5 games, that wouldn't be so bad considering how tough those first 5 are. Peter King has Dallas, Philly and NYG as his 3 best teams in football right now. AZ and NO are also better than average.

Well, 2-3 is not worst case scenario for the Skins. An upset at either Philly (more likely) or Dallas (have played well there in recent years) and we go head into game 6 at 3-2.

What lefts after that? 4 games against good teams Pitt and 3 vs the NFC East teams, all at home.

Plus Seattle, Cincy, Ravens, SF, StL, Browns, Lions!! Combined recored? 5-15. The combined record of this group when not playing each other? 0-10!!!

JT will be missed, but it will give us a chance to see how far Evans has progressed. In case y'all missed it, JT tipped three balls against the Cards, leading to three incompletions and a near interception.

Most players in this league would not have gone in week one with his knee injury, and would have left the game in week two after it got rolled up on. It was good to see Blache moving him around some yesterday. IMO it was a mistake to move him from the left to the right side.

Hopefully JT comes back at full strength in two weeks.

Corkczar,
Do you actually think that Vinny, sitting around over the weekend, was thinking to himself: "How can I make JLC and the Post look bad? I know I mentioned Kiffin on my radio show on Friday. That's it - what if I come out publically and say that JLC heard that comment, then reported to the NFL, accusing me of tampering? Yeah, I'll do that..." That is more than a JT-type lie, which I admit was a lie. The JT thing was at least had some rationale and had no downside to Vinny. Making up something like this, completely out of the blue, however, would get Vinny in much more trouble. It would be very easy for the League to verify, as Flounder pointed out. Not to mention the utter ridiculousness behind making something like that up... Having cut away that possibility, what's left? I stick by my analysis -- JLC is the most likely source of the "tampering" charge.

I don't have a script like the one above, but according to wiki, which is dead on ALL THE TIME, the scene went like this:

"Though clearly a better choice than her opponent, Lois' campaign falters as Mayor West proves more politically savvy than she is—while Lois bores voters with detailed plans to improve the city, Mayor West uses glittering generalities and statements completely unrelated to his questions. Realizing (through Brian) that it would be hopeless otherwise, Lois then resorts to similar generalities, dropping controversial terms such as "Jesus" and "terrorists" in meaningless ways. She also answers questions about her policy plans only by saying "9/11." She eventually gains the support of the populace and wins the election."

This week, 1st and 25 (following the penalty that resulted in the TD being called back). The Skins got the first and the resulting drive took 6 minutes off the clock, although Suisham missed the FG, AZ only had time for 1 possession for the rest of the game.

To which she replied:

Wonderful line. Terrific movie. GREAT script.

All depends on what you find as funny, I guess. But I suggest you check the ratings and syndication of Family Guy. Family Guy is on FOUR f'n channels. Hell, even the Simpsons come on during the weekdays, and sometimes like three times on Sunday.

South Park is on one channel and was the ish when I was in 7th grade. People just got tired of the stupid sketches they draw, I guess.

Nothing better in Family Guy then when they do a cut-a-way scene. F'n hilarious!

If I had to pick two games for Jason Taylor to miss they would be road games against Dallas and Philadelphia. These two teams have two heaviest offensive lines in football and would present mismatches for Taylor in the running game (although Eagles do like to pass first). I agree with several previous posters that the key against Dallas is to stop their running game (like Redskins did in the second game last season). If Romo can beat you over the air so be it (so far he has 5 TDs and 3 interceptions in 3 games). Romo is a gambler and will connect on a couple of long bombs, but he will also turn the ball over. I thought D. Thomas had his best game last week and it's a shame that his long TD was called off. Also, penalty aside, I liked that Heyer started to develop a nasty streak. Even though he totally leveled the Cardinal's DE, I don't think his play was dirty as the play was still ongoing, which means he could block. The penalty could have been called if Heyer had his hands in the guys face or blocked in the back (but I could not tell from the replay). Portis said that Heyer had a clean hit that did not merit a penalty and that the guy who was knocked down played dirty throughout the game. It sounded like Heyer stood up for his running back and I don't have a problem with it.

Red of the DMV - Not saying South Park is more popular, just think it's a better show. You've got to have an acquired taste for it, for sure. Most people who see it without knowing about the show think it's some slapstick comedy that uses pure vulgarity and idiocy for laughs. And that's what makes it so brilliant, because it's actually the exact opposite.

A good episode. I disagree though the Simpsons in its prime first years was brilliant and could do jokes that worked on hundreds of levels, from simple fart jokes to subtle philosophical cometary to pop-culture and political humor.

I think it had more depth humor. I mean compare the Bill Clinton charatures in both shows.

Family guys is a headonist, "Its a wonderful day to be nude" and "That pig could be in our stomachs in like, a minute"

Vs

Simpsons, Bill: "Lisa, If you complain and complain enough, eventually you can get whatever you want" Marge: "Thats a horible leson for a child" Bill: "Well I was a horible president" and "If you are ever in washington stop buy the wood shed out behind the white house, I am there most of the day"

They can take backhanded shots at anyone or anything that are pure genius. When something huge in the news happens that they don't like, they can have a show on air making fun of it within a week. I have no idea what Mel Gibson or Bono ever did to those guys, but they were absolutley DESTROYED by their comedic writing. Having said that, Family Guy is pretty darn funny as well. The "plots" are certainly not driving the episodes, but the jokes and characters are way funny.....

Greg. Q was pretty quiet. He caught 3, each seemed to be important. Two 3rd down conversions and a TD. But only 3 important plays is pretty quiet.

Given how he had he had torched Miami and SF in the 1st two games, you'd have to say the Skins did extremely well against him.

Still, with our WRs, he'd have been a terrific addition.

Are you SERIOUSLY questioning the fortitude of the guy who has hardly ever missed a game in his entire career? The guy who left on golf cart in agaony and played the very next week? That's just silly. Pooling blood in your leg is not somethng to mess with. If you mess up blood vessels in your leg you can mess up your whole career. Or you could be smart and do what's neccesary to heal.

P.S.

Div 3 football is the 13th grade, sorry. The BEST college programs have only a few people make the NFL every year. A kick to the calf or someone standing on your leg or whatever can be much more significant than what people visualize.

not sold on Devin Thomas. Caught 2, one was called back. The called back TD was obviously a blown assignment.

He got called twice for interference. While I could see the refs calls were technically OK, they wouldn't have dropped a flag on Michael Irvin for the same things.

But the play that most bothered me was an early incompletion. Looked like he didn't run the pattern and didn't go hard to the ball. We were fortunate that the ball wasn't picked.

In a WCO offense, if you don't get to the spot where you need to get, things can get very ugly. Which is my sense/concern with Thomas.

The only show my parents ever warned me about was Beavis and Butthead. And all they did was tell me not to watch it when my little brother (who was maybe like 4 or 5) was around.

Glad my parents realized censorship is a cancer and if they told me not to do something it'd only make me want to do it even more.

Let's be honest...we all know its ALWAYS difficult for us to win in Dallas.....so let's pray for an upset but be more mindful of the Redskins being aggressive and seeing where they measure up against the critically rated "BEST" in the NFC.

A win....would be huge...but a loss in a close game wouldn't be the end of the world.

Now a complete blowout....yeesh.

The NFL has a list of tiebreakers, I think strength of schedule comes first, then points scored or points allowed.

1. The NFC East is unreal
2. If JLC tried to create a story where one did not exist and thus hurt the Skins-he needs to go.
3. If you believe in the strict interpretation of the bible that is, of course, your right but, judge lest ye be judged.

Now your going to finish somewhere between 10-6 and 13-3. You already have 1 division loss, you know you dont play all your games at home right? Why don't you just make sure Cambell can throw more than just a check down pass, dang, I can do that! Your team has no clue what they are about to face when they play the cowboys 0-line, its been JV so far for your team now its time to really play, then off to the iggles, LOL, start praying!

Sports Guru = Antrel Rolle

Quote from Rolle about his underestimation of Jason Campbell ... to his peril:

"I have to admit, coming into this game I wasn't too hot on him," Cardinals free safety Antrel Rolle said. "I knew he was a big-play guy. I knew he could definitely beat you with his arm, but I didn't think he was that comfortable in the system."

JLC is getting the business in the principal's office right now. He'll be put in time-out, made to face the corner, and won't be able to go outside for recess.

When JLC gets home, he'll act like everything is okay, and he had a grand time at school today. His mother will call him downstairs and let him listen to the message on the answering machine from the school principal.

He'll then begin to get his ass beat with a kitchen towel, a belt, and the TV antenna, all after his mother instructs him to take off all his clothes, get in the bathtub, and not to dry himself off when he gets out the tub.

JaLaC did a fine job with him Monday H-back, but if he really did what Cerrato says, the Post needs to take action against him, PERIOD.

What a jack ass. Maybe this is why he is so glowing in the "H-back" post, he wanted to be able to say "Who Me? Look what I wrote about the Skins, how could you accuse me of such a thing?" Cuz that ONE post sure does "undo" all the other crap he has done, doesn't it?

Just thought you fickle skins fans would like to know what the good men in vegas are predicting, Dallas is favored by 11.5. Was it not two weeks ago you were calling for a rookie QB and a new HC.

+++ it is pretty clear that... JLC as the source of the tampering talk is by far the option that requires the least amount of imagination stretching. Personally, even though I think Vinny is a blowhard who really enjoys this feud with the Post (JLC), he would not have made the accusation about JLC if it were not true.---ANONYMOUS (of course) +++

From PFT,

Finally someone within the Lions organization making sense.

WILLIAM CLAY FORD JR ADDS VOICE TO “FIRE MILLEN” MOVEMENT
Posted by Michael David Smith on September 22, 2008, 3:10 p.m. EDT
Through seven-plus years of futility, Detroit Lions owner William Clay Ford Sr. has inexplicably stood behind his team president, Matt Millen.

It’s now reached the point where even Ford’s own son is publicly questioning his father.

Asked today what he thought of the way the Lions played yesterday at San Francisco, William Clay Ford Jr. said, “It was an embarrassment, the fans deserve better, and if I had the authority, I would have fired the general manager.”

When asked again, directly, if he would fire Millen, Ford Jr. said, “Yes, but I don’t have that authority.”

And that’s the bottom line: Ford Jr. doesn’t have that authority, and as long as Ford Sr. is alive, Millen’s job appears to be safe.

I am not a Campbell hater but I am still not convinced he is the future QB of the Skins that will get us back to the Big Show.

My take on JC is that he has improved and may not cost us as many games, but can he consistently carry this team to wins?

So far this year he has looked good, great at times. Getting confidence is the best thing that can happen for him right now and wins in Dallas and Crapadelphia woud be amazing for that.

Bring on the hate....

Overlooked point. The Skins Thursday night fiasco vs the NYG in the opener appears to be an anamoly.

The extra days between the opener and game 2 seem to have given Zorn enough time to figure out what wasn't going well and address it. I think that extra time may have been a huge reason why the Skins went from looking so poor to looking so much better between games.

Game 2 and game 3 are much more representative of what this team will look like in 2008

This might hold up if it made sense to ask the league office if it was tampering. To presume that JLC legitimately asked the league office it was tampering would be to presume he was an idiot. He's not; he's a bright guy, and he surely knows what the tampering rule are after blogging about them so often.

Everyone knows that the Skins aren't about to fire Zorn, and that there is no interest in Kiffin.

If JLC called the NFL at all about the Kiffin reference as tampering, you can be sure it wasn't for reporting the news so much as trying to make it.

Sports_Guru, let's see how Jason Campbell stacks up against other NFC East QBs so far this season:

T. Romo 5TD, 3INT, COMP % 67.4, QB rating 103.2
D. McNabb 5TD, 1INT, COMP % 66.7, QB rating 102.8
J. Campbell 4TD, 0INT, COMP % 65.6, QB rating 100.1
E. Manning 4TD, 1INT, COMP % 60.7, QB rating 91.1.

It looks to me that Campbell, the youngest and least experienced of the 4 QBs, at least holds his own against his competition. Just wait till he fully masters the new system.

what a sucky day at the blog! almost 99% of people on here agree that whatever vinny is claiming jasno did was wrong.
and until jasno says something we got nothing to talk about.

c'mon!

let's talk football now. skins won a HUGE game. and sports_guru, thank you for showing up. at least you're talking football. i'm not a jc fan either. not yet anyway. though he did improve from last week. he's had back to back weeks of improvement in his reads and play. i was a bit pre-occupied but i only counted one blatant miss from him yesterday and that might've been the fact that every time jc threw to devin thomas he got called for PI.

this is all new to me. i vaguely rember mark rypien days (was 16). i know this that this team hasn't looked this good on both sides of the ball at the same time in a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOng time. it's not making me regret not buying crappy seats at fedex but i'm not a drinker and i understand that tailgating is half the fun going to games.

JZ seemed like a good guy, honest the way spurrier is. and it is very nice to see a good guy succeed. also there's the "no tape" on jz thing too. he's never been a OC let alone a HC in this league before. so it'll probly take the league some time to get a read on his play calling. and hopefully by then JZ has matured aswell as an OC and an HC.

i think cowgirls are going to be extra fired up just because of what the skins did to them last year. (sweeeet!) and it'll be the last meeting between the two at that stadium.

sween, you shoulda stayed up a lil longer until after the game cuz they did show the highlight of the skins game but they only showed one pass of #37 getting burnt...and how good kurt warner looks. whaaaaaaaa? they lost!

and i want the skins to win but dude, to me they're playing with house money when they go up there. they should just come out firing bombs and blitzing.

Lets pretend he did for a minute...and none of us goons here on the blog really know the facts at this point. IF he did, then the NFL would investigate by listening Vinny's show and find that the Skins did nothing wrong. End of story.

Settle down just a little, everyone. This ain't life or death.

And for F-sakes, we didn't even have this blog until JLC came along.

That's all well and good, but if you heard Vinny's show, there was NOTHING EVEN CLOSE TO SUGGESTING TAMPERING whatsoever. If JLC really called asking "if the Skins would be charged with tampering", THE ONLY REASON FOR IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TO CREATE AN ISSUE, NOT INVESTIGATE A POSSIBLE ISSUE.

That is the problem, period.

Am i the only one who thinks loosing Taylor for this week is the best news we could get?

I mean, the guy IS a liability in the run game...plain and simple.

My thought is that the team has realized this, knows Dallas wants to run the ball, and that JT's knee is still not 100%. So why not come up with a minor injury to keep him out a week without JT losing face? For the skins, it's a win win situation.

Bring on the Cowgirls!! I retract everything i said about Cambell after the Giants game...he seems to have found his rythm in the offense, and the sky is the limit!

On a football note, Blache sounded as if he very much intended to give the running game to the Cardinals, his entire game plan was geared towards Warner and the wide outs. I hope for the Skins' sake this is true, cuz if not, our run D needs to improve dramatically if we intend to have a shot in this division. Other than that, I have seen exactly what I expected from the Skins, great job, HTTR.

Posted by: BluCollar Redskin | September 22, 2008 5:12 PM | Report abuse

gimmydatpot --

I hadn't thought it was intentional, but I did have the thought that it might work out to our advantage as well.

Considering the 'Boys actually ran Barber 24 times against the Pack, that could be a very good thing for the D-Line, get Evans more time, he's a better run stuffer, and we can still get pressure on Romo other ways.

Posted by: BluCollar Redskin | September 22, 2008 5:16 PM | Report abuse

As far as JLa goes, no one knows if he violated the rule of journalism by making himself part of the story. Obviously, thats what Vinny has tried to do -- make the story about JLa. But when I reread Vinny's comments, seemed like he was working a bit too hard to get JLa in trouble.

"But when a guy is trying to hurt the franchise of the Washington redskins, I’m gonna stand up and I’m gonna defend the Washington Redskins, because there is nothing that happened on that—this is just a guy attacking us, and I wish that he would just be professional like the rest of his colleagues that cover the Redskins. Period."

When I read that, it reminded me of the scene in Animal House in the hearing where they accuse Dean Wormer and Greg (Marmalade, not blogger Greg) of putting down the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

I'm not sure what is going on, but I'm thinking it won't end well.

Posted by: AL Zeke etc | September 22, 2008 5:17 PM | Report abuse

dealer,
I'm with you it's House Money.
If we beat Dallas or even play them close, the Skins will sail up the rankings and start to get a little respect.

MOst of the stories were about how the Cardinals didn't win, not about the Skins beating the Cards.

blucollar, yes, that's what greg said about the running game and i believe him. because he wasn't giving the DL any run support. no safeties. he was using 5 db's at one point. springs said that they gave warner a lot of new looks. but the key to stopping cowgirls will be the opposite. stop their running game and romo will reward you with one of his trademark "heady" plays.

How much respect have the 'Skins earned around the league? They stunk on national TV opening night against the Giants (who also were a bit odorous themselves).

Since then, they've beaten two mediocre teams at home and they needed to come from behind to do it. They didn't blow either team away. They played good football, but they weren't dominating. They're 14th in the league in total offense and 13th in total defense -- pretty middle of the road.

It's way early in the season and the 'Skins still have a lot to prove before they're going to be feared and be spotted in anyone's top 10.

The Skins did a dam good job against the Saints running game, not to scared of Brees and the Saints' passing game, I certainly see the 'Boys as more of threat "match-up" wise from the running game first, we ought to be able to handle their wide outs, TO is the only really good one, so the game plan should be a bit more like the one against the Saints, stop the run, load the box, and pressure Romo.

First off, I do take some solace in the fact that many, many Washington Post readers now realize that La Canfora has credibility issues, integrity issues, and honesty issues. I've been complaining about this stuff for a couple years now and it's reassuring to see that so many others are finally realizing what I've been saying all along

Second off, the Washington Post has already lost a ton of credibility this year with its extremely pro-Obama coverage. The Post will continue to lose credibility if La Canfora is kept on payroll for another second, if the tampering story is indeed true. If so, he needs to be removed from his job immediately if not sooner.

The NFC East has a collective record of 10-2, with both losses coming within the division.

If you include the Cardinals from the old alignment, the division would be 12-3, and again with losses only within the division.

To be sure ... but I think it would be worth making the tender offers to Golston and Montgomery. I think its fairly critical to re-sign Evans, esp. given that after a many many season (11?) streak of not missing a game, Jason Taylor actually has to miss one. K. Campbell seems like he's always been reliable LB depth, and LB is currently thin, so I would re-sign him too.

My MAIN point was about how Kendall might not be back for another season ... and wondering whether Rinehart is going to be the guy to replace him there. As a vet heavy team, esp. on the O-line, I think they need to think about the ultimate replacements for both Kendall and Samuels. [I'm assuming they are "there" already with Jansen.]

Posted by: dcsween | September 22, 2008 6:12 PM

dcsween,

I think Rinehart can replace Kendall next year, we need to draft a couple more lineman in the next draft to replace samuels and Thomas.

Sween, fair enough, but my thought is that these guys can all be signed without having to break the bank. None of these guys is a clear cut starter other than Kendall, and he's already making starter $$.

Golston and Doughty are starters, but I don't think either is going to get big $$.

No doubt, it will make sense to keep the younger guys on the lines and LB -- where they are older and thinner.

Then again Larry Michales is the Bill O'Riely to the skins GOP.

Alex,

You are behind JLC trying to get our team in trouble with the NFL, come on dude you have alot of good post on here but you must be kidding on this.

There is no way the Redskins would be saying all this stuff if it were not true. This can be checked by any reporter, all they have to do is call the league office.

Now do not get me wrong they have lied about alot of stuff, they are no saints by any stretch of the means. But this would be dumb to lie about when it can be proved or disproved so easly.

Posted by: Flounder | September 22, 2008 6:30 PM | Report abuse

Sween, as far as the Broncs go ...

Beating Oakland, expected. Beating SD (did they really?) and New Orleans? A tiny bit of luck the other way and they are 1-2. They give up a lot of points.

I'd think expectations would be for .500-ish record. So I'd say 3-0 is unexpected.

My guess is that JLa would never be so foolish as to accuse the Skins of tampering.

But would a reporter contact a league office and ask if certain "comments" could be considered as tampering. I can see that. And if there is nothing to it, the story dies a quick death ... if it even lives in the first place.

The reason this story is alive and prominent is because Vinny wants it to be.

Please end the blog invasion...it's really pitiful.

JLC is a sports journalist.

Journalism is a profession (aka the Third Estate) in which Journalist are supposed to ask tough question and do research and generally apply critical thinking to their subject. In this case, the Washington Redskins. Ive been a fan since my childhood.

I come here for critical thinking, to share with fans and the jibba jabba of course (but not the name-calling).

Hail!

Posted by: stumped | September 22, 2008 7:01 PM | Report abuse

It's quite true that we've only heard one side of the story (i.e., Vinny's side). It's also quite true that JLC has a right to investigate matters such as incidents involving tampering.

HOWEVER, if JLC asked the league office to look into Vinny's comments about Kiffin, does anyone doubt that is part of the blood feud between JLC and the front office? Vinny's comments weren't even close to amounting to tampering. JLC has repeatedly expressed his distaste for Vinny and Snyder. JLC was blasting Vinny for doing the show. The Redskins front office has made it clear they do not like Vinny. To me, it seems quite apparent that JLC was not making an innocent inquiry; rather, he was trying to get Vinny in trouble so he could say "See everyone! Vinny is an idiot and the radio show was a dumb idea. F U Redskins front office."

Can Dan Snyder be petty and immature? Yes (e.g., the Nolan-ice cream and the Coles-TV incidents). But that is not a reason for JLC to act like the petty, immature and unprofessional individual that he has acted like. Only kids use the "they started it" defense as an excuse for their own shortcomings.

Oh, and I know some of you think JLC is just being an objective, hard-hitting reporter. If you don't think JLC (a) hates DS and VC and (b) lets his personal feelings about DS and VC as men (as opposed to Redskins officials) affect his work and color his views of their decisions, you need a brain transplant. Oh, BTW, I'm not an extremeskins drone. I'm not a JLC drone either.

There are already pictures of Johnson in a Redskins jersey floating around the internets and while at first, a few weeks back with Joe Gibbs still at the helm, I didn't think much of those pictures, after doing more homework I don't think it's a coincidence. While I would never accuse the Redskins - or any NFL team for that matter - of tampering, it's no secret around the league which teams covet which players.

This is from a post JLC did on January 31st, when he was the only one mentioning tampering when it came to the Skins and Ocho Cinco

this post makes sense...go write the ravens blog

Jason LaCanfora grew up a Baltimore Colts fan.
Jason LaCanfora openly hated and criticized (sp??) the Redskins while in Baltimore.
If you email Jason LaCanfora he will openly proclaim his disdain for the team and it's ownership.
He was hired by the post to be antagonistic to the team

Flounder, in one of your comments, you indicated the Raiders might have complained over tampering. Using logic and the Raiders will never work.

The Raiders front office (aka Al David) is consumed with firing Kiffin and not paying off his contract. Al Davis tends to make enemies out of people. Ask Shanahan who loves crushing them (Davis refused to pay him as well after firing him). Or Marcus Allen, who Davis benched. Who then left for KC and scored plenty of TDs vs Raiders, on his way to Canton.

Alex they have not fired anyone, they got rid of Czaben national morning show because they had to give certain time slots to ESPN and they of course wanted dumb and dumber on the air.

But Czaben's local show where he bashes Vinny and Dan relentlessly, is still on and the best show on the station.

Like I said I dont listen to 980, so I didn't remember the details, but I thought i had heard he was fired. Only talk radio I look out for is the Mike O'Meara show.

Al,

My point was no one but JLC thought this was tampering, and JLC is smart enough to know it was'nt, he did what he did and got called on it and now may loose his job, sorry but that is what you get when you let personal stuff affect your work.

But does anyone here really KNOW what JLa did? I don't and I'm pretty sure you don't either. The number of assumptions about what has happened is pretty remarkable. They may prove right, but there is a tons conjecture and few facts

It really is only a matter of time for them to be forced into getting Jason out of this beat, the skins office has been on a mission for a long time now.. Any time your team has a TV show with a special graphic dedicated to their counting a single other reporter. Its rough.

I haven't liked Snyder since he fired the old gaurd, when he was first hired. Having said that I have no doubt that Jasno stepped way over the line. Vinny (S Jr.) would never have made this public if it couldn't be backed-up. That is the problem with all the people backing Jasno. This is way to easy to verify.

Al,

I am going off of what Vinny said but also if nothing is going on were is JLC, it is to quiet for there not to be an issue.

You maybe right this could all be a Vinny lie, but that would be stupid thing for him to lie about, when JLC could crush him on it.

If this was a lie JLC would have said something about it by now.

7:16 Anon:

I freely admit that I'm engaging in speculation. However, "remaining silent pending consultations with editors" is tantamount to an admission. If Vinny was so off base and JLC did not ask the NFL to look into Vinny's comments, why wouldn't JLC simply issue a denial?

Given JLC's hatred of Dan Snyder, Vinny Cerrato and the colors burgundy and gold, would it shock you if Vinny's allegations were false? Even if Vinny is only telling half of the story, JLC has brought this speculation on himself. His petty jabs at Vinny and Danny (as opposed to thoughtful criticisms) are lending credence to Vinny's account.

Besides, I have every right to speculate. This isn't a courtroom and JLC isn't being brought up on criminal charges. One side has gotten its facts out and the other side is silent. In absence of a denial or different account, I'm going to believe Vinny's story.

The fact that NO ONE from the Post (including Cindy) is denying the accusation is TELLING.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 22, 2008 7:33 PM | Report abuse

@Dylan,
Yes, there is a blood-feud between JLC and the FO. It's so intense that JLC probably has few sources on the team.

JLC is not entirely objective. He has his favorite Redskins, and he says as much up here.

But he is not a media shill, nor should he become one.

Today, Jason is The Story. Why? Because the FO has used their big PR/marketing stick to make it so.

And its boring, who except the FO, cares?

Posted by: stumped | September 22, 2008 7:35 PM | Report abuse

JLC needs to grow up and learn from this experience. He holds a grudge against the franchise, for whatever reason. That doesn't mean he can't still do his job, but he can't allow those feelings to impact the way he does his job.

Maybe he will start to behave more professionally, whether he gets that opportunity with this job or his next one.

As for Flounder, do I think Vinny is lying? I don't know, its not like he has a reputation one way or the other. But is it common to twist words to fit an agenda? Yup.

This is no marketing stick, you do not make those claims without havin proof and if there was no proof JLC or Cindy would have issued a statement by now.

I don't know about you folks, but I prefer my beat reports to report the news, not make it. Here's PFT chiming in on the Vinny/JLC tampering saga:

LA CANFORA ACCUSES CERRATO OF TAMPERING
Posted by Mike Florio on September 22, 2008, 7:28 p.m.
Vinny Cerrato’s second day as a radio personality on ESPN 980 ended up being a bit more eventual than his Friday debut.

On Monday, Cerrato and co-host George Michael disclosed that Jason La Canfora asked the NFL whether Cerrato, Executive V.P. of the Redskins, would be busted for tampering due to things said on Friday during a discussion with Adam Schefter of NFL Network regarding rumors linking Raiders coach Lane Kiffin to Syracuse.

Assuming that La Canfora was only inquiring as to whether the comments about Kiffin constitute tampering, we’ve got no problem with what La Canfora allegedly did. If he attempted to persuade the league to pursue tampering charges against Cerrato, we’d feel much differently about the situation.

As we understand the tampering rules, teams are prohibited from making public or private comments regarding a person under contract with another NFL team. Nothing prevents a guy like Cerrato from talking about whether Lane Kiffine will be fired by the Raiders and, if so, where Kiffin might land next. As long as Cerrato doesn’t say something that would potentially disrupt the relationship between the Raiders and Kiffin (such as, “well, ahem, if Lane gets fired — wink, wink — I might know of a team that would be, cough, we’ll hire you, cough, interested”), it’s not an issue.

Even though Cerrato likely didn’t cross the line in this case, this is another of the potential headaches that would prompt most teams to avoid allowing key personnel to engage in extensive free-form radio work.

Saw that Flounder. I am between the computer and the kitchen (cooking dinner) and am slow responding.

What I hated seeing last night in the dallas game was when barber got hit and coughed the ball up, it bounced right into the hands of another player who took it down for another 10-12 yards. The ball bounced their way most of last year. I was hoping that things would be different this year.

The good news is that the ball has bounced our way this year as opposed to the last few years, so maybe Sunday things will even out there.

The only mission that has been longer lived is Chumpfora and his RI disciples' attempt to get Vinny fired. It's not wise to play with fire. Sometimes you're the windshield...sometimes you're the bug.

Al Zeke etc:

Is it possible that the Redskins blog "reporter" is lying and JLC never told him he could not comment until after he spoke with his editors? Sure, but it's unlikely. Do you really think JLC just hasn't heard about this story? It's only been on the radio, the television, on multiple internet sites, and on JLC's own blog.

If there was nothing to the story and Cerrato made the entire story up, there would be no harm whatsoever in JLC issuing a categorical denial of Vinny's reports. If there is some truth to the story, it is unclear what the "other" side of the story would sound like. JLC contacted the front office, but he didn't want to get the Redskins in trouble? JLC contacted the front office because he couldn't find the tampering rules online?

Based on my familiarity with JLC's attitude and beef with the front office, what I have heard to date from the principal parties (i.e., Cerrato), and common sense, I think there's ample grounds to believe JLC did exactly what Vinny said he did.

Czaben's local show WAS THE BEST THING GOING ON 980, TO REPLACE HIM WITH DUMB AND DUMBER JUST PISSES ME OFF SO MUCH..ALSO BTW IM ALSO TIRED AS CRAP OF COLIN CALHERD ALWAYS BASHING THE SKINS, ANYONE ELSE AGREE???

On 980, they discussed today whether Zorn is winning with Gibbs' team. Here's my take:

1) Of course, this is Gibbs personnel, but with a very different philosophy.

2) Gibbs seemed to agonize over every playcall. Gibbs lacked that gusto that he once had.

3) Gibbs took this team as far a she could take it, and that is not a bad thing.

4) Zorn may still prove to be a bust, but JC is finally maturing into the QB Gibbs drafted. I watched JC yesterday and he's growing by leaps and bounds.

5) The team is relatively healthy right now, but this team has been together for a while and could be dangerous down the stretch.

6) I always said that all this team needed was confidence. They have talent and some depth. The only thing this team lacks is that elite pass rush and that jumbo O-line.

7) I don't know why people are doggin Devin Thomas. He's on the field contributing. He had some bonehead penalties, but he's on the field.

AND THAT'S THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO SIC.

Stepping back and thinking bigger picture.

Earlier this week, a book was released with some incredibly damning stuff about the Dallas Cowboys, including Michael Irvin stabbing a teammate ... over a haircut. Somehow, that never managed to see the light of day -- until now. Nor did Switzer's $100,000 bar bill during Super Bowl week. etc etc

Where was the media on stuff like this? In Jerry Jones pocket?

I'd rather have a press that is aggressive in pursuing it stories. Clearly, covering the Cowboys meant turning a blind eye to a lot of stuff. I don't want the Redskins, or any other team, forcing the media to be as bad as the Dallas media.
