The Week in TCCLs

It's Friday...time for TCCLs...

100 TCCLs - Skins defense.
To rank fourth after the death of their best player is pretty amazing. Greg Blache is doing a marvelous job and the D is keeping the team in every game despite getting nothing from the offseason/preseason acquisitions (Jason Taylor and Erasmus James), or the draft except for Chris Horton.

11 TCCLs - Malcolm Kelly.
Better late than never. This team is starved for a target receiver and someone to create a physical mismatch in the red zone. This kid has ability, and maybe, just maybe, can stay healthy.

-15 TCCLs. Donovan McNabb.
Even if, perhaps, 50 percent of the NFL did not know that games end in a tie after a 15-minute OT period, that's no excuse for a veteran QB. You've gotta know the rules. I'm with Tom Jackson on this one - certainly seems like common knowledge. I can remember as a kid, couldn't have been more than 10-12, and watching the Browns play a tie game (Martyball in all its glory). It's not like it never happens.

-95 TCCLs - No love for Chris Wilson?
Still trying to figure out why the fastest guy among those who play in the front seven and the best speed rusher on the team gets no reps at all on defense against Dallas' rotund and immobile offensive line -- not even a few in the second half when that line is running out of gas a bit.

-2009 TCCLs - Pro Bowl ballot stuffing.
How about picking one fringe guy, like, say Justin Geisinger, and putting his face on billboards, getting everyone to rally around the Everyman and doing something slightly subversive? That I'm totally into.

Uh, I didn't see Ethan Albright on the Pro Bowl Ballot. Hello? Let's send the Red Snapper to Hawaii. Who's going to snap it to Plackemeier when he's booming 23 yarders for the NFC?

THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON DRUGS:

Can't wait till the black prez sign off on a new billed called "BLACK POWER". Details of the bill make every white person pay 1.00 for each slave that was killed for the color of there skin. maybe that would wake all the "WHITE PEOPLE" up.

Posted by: JohnDinHouston | November 21, 2008 4:19 PM | Report abuse

dealer, I know what you are getting at with the o-line comment from the last thread.

I think its a combination of things. First, Zorn has been more 'west coast' like in the past few games, which is not the strength of the players. Second, its clear that Samuels isn't healthy and Jansen isn't much of a pass blocker. Third, I think teams have realized that our WRs, other than Moss, just can't beat them. Fourth, I think teams realized that as good as Portis is, he can only carry it so much. You can throw 50 times in a game, but Portis can only go roughly 25 carries.

But I do agree, the comment that all these vets just forgot their fundamentals ... that doesn't register with me either.

The Pro Bowl no longer encompasses a talent pool advanced enough to play against Leigh Torrence!

Torrence named the group Sha Na Na. They did not want to be called that!

Posted by: DikShuttle | November 21, 2008 4:26 PM | Report abuse

Umm, good point about Chris Wilson ... but if Jason Taylor doesn't get on the field, then Jason Taylor doesn't get a chance to rebut the last sentence in the first TCCL award.

Posted by: poolman1200000 | November 21, 2008 4:29 PM | Report abuse

Here's an idea (and maybe the right one since it hasn't been tried yet...):

Play Taylor the whole damn game. He was an everydown player his whole career! He's not going to take advantage of anybody on one or two plays. His strategy will only come about if he plays against a guy for a while.

That may be why he's not producing anything.

I realize the downside, but since you're not getting any production anyway, why not let a future hall of famer have a go at it?!

I don't think it's a case of them forgetting their fundamentals. It's that as they break down as the season moves along, it becomes that much more difficult to perform the fundamentals correctly and consistently. You ever try getting your butt down with sore knees and beat up quads? :)

DikShuttle, I think Jason Taylor agrees with you. I heard him comment that it is hard to get in a rhythm when you are not in the whole game - but he said he will do whatever the team wants him to do. Really humble guy.

You are getting production -- in the run game. Is it worth it to risk that?

Taylor has had one game this season where he's played healthy. I don't think he can be written off that easily, whether as a situational rusher or as an every-down lineman.

JT is very team oriented. It killed him to come to Washington, but he does believe that his team deserves his allegiance.

How many players would insist upon going out with blood pouring out of their calf?

He's very ethical. Dying breed, I'd say.

Of course we have no idea if he's really done or not, but I'd like to see him play 3 games in a row at DE and really work his style.

I wish I had a congressional representative I could write to.

Dik, I don't know how much of JT is still the effects of the calf thing, but he seemed like he was getting run over before that. Maybe the AFC East didn't have the power running game opponents we have in the NFC East? I dunno. Also, his sacking prowess hasn't really made itself known in a Skins uniform, either before or after the calf thing. If Blache's philosophy starts with "stop the run," then we have to stop the run ... which maybe is why Evans is in there (plus Evans seems like he's having a mighty fine year ... leads the Skins in sacks with 3.5).

Posted by: dcsween | November 21, 2008 4:46 PM | Report abuse

craig2, since the end of the first quarter against the Giants, seems to me that J.Campbell has been thinking way faster, if he's thinking rather than reacting at all. Feels like it hit a little bit of a slump (more thinking) by the Rams game, but for the most part, seems like the only thinking he's been having to do is near the end of the play, i.e., "Uh oh, I think my body is going to be hitting the ground within the next eighth of a second again."

Posted by: dcsween | November 21, 2008 4:20 PM | Report abuse

Brain lock doesn't always show up so blatantly. Zorn has commented over and over again that "so and so" is open, but JC didn't see him, or JC didn't had a little pressure and didn't look that way. It could also be that our wide outs simply suck across the board, ya know, can't get open at all. But I think the more likely issue is that JC hasn't reached a comfort level with what he is seeing to take chances at the right times.

Like the Romo TD to Bennett, the guys was covered, JC would NOT have thrown that pass. Sometimes, a QB just has to let it go and I don't JC is there.

"We all know 99 % of the people in here are white. thats a fact"

Actually not a fact, as there is no where that race is identified during enrollment! Facts must be supported

"now if thats true someone in your family tree has blood all over them."

Also not a fact. In actuality, only 8% of the population owned slaves. Most were not wealthy enough nor had the desire to. Also, there have been millions of Immigrants that have come to America well past the abolishment of slavery. So chances are actually less then 25% that someone identifying themselves as caucasiun has a slave ower in their past. Most of us are actually more likely to have african american heritage in our family trees then that of a slave owner.

But then again, I'm white... so what do I know?

Posted by: fbchick | November 21, 2008 4:51 PM | Report abuse

You're kinda making my point there, sween, but I agree. There are fundamental differences in the philosophy.

But Zorn changed his philosophy to take advantage of Portis. I don't think any coach should be above learning his team. That's what probably hurt Grilliams the most, not playing the D he needed to to work w/ Gibb's & Saunder's O.

Posted by: DikShuttle | November 21, 2008 4:52 PM | Report abuse

Is Carter getting run over when he's in there with Evans? If he is, then you guys ought to try JT there for a whole game. I would say he's much more likely to find a way to get to the QB than Carter everything else being equal (meaning he really IS fit again).

Dik, Zorn HAD to adapt his game plan to his players. Blache is doing just fine with his game plan (#4 D in the league) ... also, I'm not sure what Grilly could have done (i.e., I don't think there is anything he could have done) with the 3 and outs that Saunders was giving him.

I'm thinking the production problems with Jason Taylor are luck-related, specifically, bad luck, ... on the freak injury to the calf. He was on a learning curve (after having "learned" his position in essentially the same system over a decade on the same team) before he got hurt.

"Compartmental syndrome". Compartments. F compartments.

Posted by: craig2

Disagree. JC has given a lot of players the benefit of the doubt in his passes into coverage, hoping that they can make a play. It just so happens that our boys haven't made those plays this year (@ NYG - JC hits Thrash in the hands in 1v1 coverage deep down the right sideline, Thrash drops it. Vs Steelers - JC puts the ball up to Moss in double coverage in the endzone, ball gets tipped and falls incomplete as Moss dives for it. Vs Dallas - JC unloads a bomb to Moss in double coverage and hits Moss in the hands, Moss drops it). JC's decision-making this season has been sublime (that is not an overstatement). It's his accuracy that needs work. You can only do so much when there's 2 legit receiving threats on the field.

Hey JLAC....does the 100 TCCL's for the defense in the -95 TCCL's for the inexcusable use (or non-use) of C Wilson nearly cancel each other out for our defense. Throw in the L Torrence buffoonery and the failure to draft any DLinemen and we can end up with a net negative, even though we are ranked 4th in the league in total defense and even though our defense keeps us into games even with our anemic offense.

Thanks for all the insight. It's a shame your great mind never made it into professional football.

Posted by: amsaul | November 21, 2008 5:16 PM

I don't. I think SLB and WLB have different skill sets and there are different roles they play in the D. I like Blade or K. Campbell at SLB.

I admit that I was a ballot stuffer. I even picked guys OTHER than Skins ... I picked unknown guys on other teams I never heard of ... and different guys every time ... so that my ballot stuffings would not have an effect on the RELATIVE strength of my votes.

When I first saw the Big Media hubbub, I felt a little embarrassed ... kind of homery.

Then I remembered that the Pro Bowl is a completely fraudulent joke having very little to do with actual talent ... only a popularity contest. The ONLY play ANYONE will EVER remember from ANY Pro Bowl was Sean Taylor's hit on Brian Moorman.

I'm not a homer in the "get off Vinny and Snyder's backs" sense of the term, but I do really love the actual guys on the roster.

So I feel pretty good about rewarding them with an all expenses-paid family holiday where they are incidentally required to wear a uniform for a few hours for a meaningless game that no one watches. Thank you team!

I'm all for the ballot stuffing. I haven't voted but last year's 13 cowboys pro-bowlers was completely absurd. I don't care if they were 13-3, there were 4-7 guys who didn't belong. I'm all for the old school where the fans had no vote.

Again, would this even be a story if the 'skins took care of business at home against the Rams and Cowboys? 8-2 and this might not get out. Weren't most of these votes when the 'skins were 4-1 and looking to go 7-1 with the 'easy' part of the schedule upon them?

Re- Jason Taylor and Andre Carter. Couldn't they line them both up on the right side, just every now and again? Wouldn't that give the opposing left tackle and O-coordinator something to think about? Taylor could start way out right and challenge the FB or RB to stop him getting at the QB. Maybe it wouldn't work, but it would be worth a shot, surely? Even if the opposition counter it, they'd have an OT playing out of position.
