TCCLs

162 TCCLs - Texas Rangers. Can't my Sox play you every game? My goodness, another night, another nine-run inning at the expense of Texas pitching. Just what the doctor ordered. Many thank yous. Oh yeah, and Youk, you rock. Manny who? The Cincinnati Kid is getting it done hitting behind Big Papi.

32 TCCLs - Former Skins. Big week for guys formerly bashed by Redskins fans - defensive backs Adam Archuleta and Ade Jimoh in particular. Seemingly both out of the league, the Pats throw Jimoh a lifeline and the Raiders sign Arch Deluxe, personal protector to the stars, as a linebacker no less. Could Gardner, Rod, be far behind? (Also, check out Mark Brunell's exhibition stats. Not too shabby. I know the preseason means nothing, but considering the theme of this item figured I'd point it out, anyway).

5 TCCLs - Skins nickel package. Demetric Evans seems quietly poised to do big things, and the idea of Carter, Evans, Griffin, Taylor, Washington, Fletcher, Landry, Rogers, Springs, Smoot and Doughty on the field at the same time seems intriguing. Lot of options there. Getting better on third down is the central theme to the Taylor trade, and if that occurs than that's a huge boost.

-5 TCCLs - Preseason TCCLs. Just not the same as the real thing; and then to have to slog through five of these exhibitions, and hence exhibitions TCCLs, well, it's just not a pretty thing. Bring on the real thing.

-6 TCCLs - Keep getting barraged with questions about Jon Jansen, and how he is going to fare this season. Been a rough start for him and I am especially interested to see how he holds up playing a half or so against Carolina a week from now. There have been issues in pass protection for a while now, and he should be given ample leeway as he works back from a season-ending injury, but must also make some progress in the next three weeks as well.

To answer Nate's JayTay sack 'n fumble versus a pick by Stone Hands question from the last post:

Pick by Carlos. Because I already know #55 can get a sack and cause a fumble.

Posted by: freakzilla | August 15, 2008 2:23 PM | Report abuse

I am not sure who those last negative six Tom Cruise Couch Leaps were intended for... were they directed at Jansen, or the barrage of questions about Jansen?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 15, 2008 2:25 PM | Report abuse

My preference on Rogers making an INT of Favre vs. Taylor knocking Favre out (sack w/ fumble): the first, easilly. It would show some promise for Roger's recovery from his knee injury/surgery and hopefully from his stonehands. Taylor can smack a QB anyday.

I remember the first time I heard TCCL and it was explained to me within the next two posts.

Tom Cruise is a jinx. The only reason he loves The Danny so much is because Snyder built him his own rollercoaster that he is actually tall enough to ride.

In a way I agree with X - E: I had no idea what the heck those things are. Therefore, I propose a permanent link to the RI wiki page (cuz I may be traveling to the library or other public computers) on this site so people can reference it whenever something strange/unusual comes up.

Posted by: Karen | August 15, 2008 2:28 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, Karen, that would be helpful. Cindy? Would it be possible to put a link to the RI wiki page in the left hand navigation area?

Posted by: redskirt | August 15, 2008 2:32 PM | Report abuse

Nate, between your choices, I would go for the Rodgers INT anyday. Sween had a good point, in that it's better for us as a team to stop the pass before it gets airborne, but with Rodger's track record, I would be all for him suddenly growing a pair of good hands.

I think for us as Skins fans seeing Carlos get a pick would be more satisfying, but I think that, as a football-loving nation which just endured the endless saga of Favre's un-retirement, the US of America could really benefit from the cathartic relief of seeing Favre's clock get rung.

JLC REVEALS HIS GIBBS-HATE

(70Chip) sent the following message on or about August 23, 2007:

Of course Kendall will start. We all know Joe is just covering for his guys. Don't take it so personally. He yelled at Steve Buckhants one time. It's all affectation. I would encourage you to get some Redskins employees to talk to you so you don't have to hunt down people from other teams. That way would be more "Insiderly."

Gibbs treats people like they are morons, so I am calling him out on it. Don't insult that same fanbase you try to stroke all the time after you go 5-11.
trust me, i have no lack of people talking to me on this team, way more than gibbs can stomach. he can't stand the fact that i get the straight dope and don't write his dopish version of the truth in many instances (their crappy left side of the line a perfect case in point).

You and JReid, seem to keep bringing up that Demetric Evans is going to have a big year. I hope you guys are right.

Its beginning to seem like you guys are just giving shout-outs to the players, (and coaches for that matter) who are giving you the time of day, and talk with you.

JLC you are so critical of Gibbs, Vinny, Dan the Man, etc, of their personnel evaluation skills.

I would hope that you have some integrity, as an editorial journalist, in one of the few occasions that you actually stick your neck out, to make a prediction --- instead of spouting out opinions and criticisms, to hold yourself accountable if D Evans ends up having a average typical year, which is usually nothing too impressive.

I would take the bottom guy on the Gaints or Cowboys DL depth chart over Demetric Evans any day.

Be a responsible editorial journalist. If you're right, hey you deserve all the credit for sharing your predictions with your audience.

The TCCLs must live on! TCCLs are the only appropriate way to express kudos or excitement for our Danny Boy's Skins. Plus, I chuckle inside every time I visualize Cruisy jumping up and down on Oprah's couch--hair flopping, goofy grin on his face.

As for the permanent Wiki link, is that really necessary? When you host a party with friends from different circles, you don't post a list of jargon you use with each set of friends, do you? (But if the Post wants to link to the Wiki, then fine with me. Who am I to judge?)

SUNSHINE SEES STORM CLOUDS FOR FAVRE

Posted by Mike Florio on August 15, 2008, 12:21 a.m.

Our old pal Joe Theismann a/k/a Joey Sunshine might no longer have a high-profile television gig, but he’s still got plenty of opinions. And he shared some of them on Thursday with Andrew Siciliano and Krystal Fernandez of FOX Sports Radio.
Regarding one of the biggest stories in league history, Thiesmann thinks that it could be a long year for Jets quarterback Brett Favre.

“I don’t think this has been fun at all for him. I think if he went back to Green Bay he would be in a familiar environment and would have been comfortable,” Theismann said. “Even if he went to Minnesota, he would be inspired by his vindictive nature to go back and prove something against Green Bay. Going to New York was a void-filler.

“Any doubt in your mind at this level can be very detrimental, not only to your game but also to your health. I think this is a disaster for Brett Favre. I know he wants to play, but I don’t think in his heart he’s really where he wanted to be, and therefore I don’t think its going to be one of those situations that can be positive. They open with Miami, then they get New England, then get San Diego, and then they get Arizona at home. The first month of the season will tell us a lot about how Brett feels. His arm is sore, his legs are sore; it’s going to be a limited offense. I just don’t see it as a positive for him.”

Holy crap, we think we agree with Joe Theismann.

From the Redskins Insider archives about the classy, great (now 5-11) Baltimore Ravens (January 2007):

. . .

The Comparison
Okay, I figured you guys would have drummed this up by now, but I guess I'll have to prod you.

Take a look at the quotes in the article I wrote today about how the Ravens revamped their offensive line on the fly, and compare what they did to just about everything the Skins always do, and draw your own conclusions.

The Ravens have gotten production out of basically their entire 2006 draft class, and a bunch of guys from 05 as well, who have given the team superior depth to withstand injuries, etc. They are the anti-Skins.

The whole time I was sitting with Ozzie Newsome and Eric DeCosta, the Ravens director of college scouting and a former Skins intern, I couldn't help but think, "Man, these guys get it. They really all do work together. They all follow Ozzie's vision. This is what an organization is supposed to be."

They are polar opposites from your boys out in Ashburn in almost every way. It was a very refreshing week in Owings Mills. The entire vibe about that franchise is top notch and classy, from the way they embrace and reach out to the former Baltmore Colts in town - you should hear ex-Skins talk privately about how they have been treated by their franchise since The Squire passed on - to their relaxed air.

It's like they know they're doing it the right way, they don't have to try to sell you a bunch of crap about their process, and there is a quiet confidence to what they do. They don't have to try to covince you that they do it right, because the numbers speak for themselves.

Since 1999, 75 percent of their draft picks have played in the NFL, either for the Ravens or elsewhere. Best in the league. Since 1999, they have received 16 compensatory draft picks due to players departing in free agency - like getting two extra drafts. And they used those picks on late-round studs like Bart Scott and Adalius Thomas.

That means they are drafting so well that they can afford to let some draft picks leave as free agents, because they essentially replace them cheaply with the extra comp picks they get. I beleive the Redskins, in that same span since 1999, have received 5 compensatory picks.

I do know this, Baltimore, New England and Philly are at the top of the comp list since 1999 (all receiving like 13 or more additional picks), and the Redskins are lumped in the bottom third with Houston, Cleveland, Arizona.

That really tells you all you need to know.

On the plus side, I found myself in Baltimore for a Bachelor party/trip earlier this year. We had dinner at the Rusty Scupper and I feasted on the crab soup and crab stuffed fish. Can't remember what the fish was only that it had crab with it. The crab soup was phenomenal. I can still taste it. Mmmmm...

Another random ADD question. I went out for Resturant Week last night to a very very nice place to eat. However if you are a local resturant averaging close to $50 a meal why do you even bother puting crab cakes on your menu?

No one should ever order a $30 crab cake when there are other options like a excelent steak with blue cheese or rost duck or soft shell crab.

Alex, is it you buying dinner or the GF?

I used to be a HUGE La Canfora fan and supporter. He was one of the first sports reporters to ever write back after emailing him. But day after day I'm starting to understand and agree to a certain extent with the anti-JLC folk.

It's kind of sad how he goes to great lengths to bash the Redskins sometimes, but everyone isn't going to write, say, or act how you feel they should all the time.

When the title of your blog thread is "Let's give Vinny a nickname", you're kind of obvious with your contempt for the man.

Never let em' see you sweat, La Canfora.

I fail to see how Gibbs going 6-10 in his first year back after 12 years away from the game is considered a failure after inheriting a 5-11 team (JLC) but Zorn would be just fine and dandy to take a 9-7 playoff team that survived the murder of its best player and take them down to 6-10.

That's flat loser talk.

I found Vinny's concern with Jasno a little amusing, frankly. Does he really care that much about what Jasno thinks? Jasno was over the top (IMHO) on his article attacking Vinny's credibility for lying (gasp!) at a press conference. But why would Vinny care about what a REPORTER thinks of him? He seemed genuinely concerned. Enough to discourage his mother (who also, apparently, can't figure out that some people incorporate their own biases into their writing) from reading Jasno's blog. Really?

Also, I thought Wise was a little heavy-handed on Jasno: "'I told her which blog not to read,' Cerrato said, referring to Jason La Canfora's Redskins Insider on washingtonpost.com, which eviscerates Cerrato like Post TV critic Tom Shales used to eviscerate Kathie Lee Gifford's Christmas specials." Ouch! Sounds to me like Wise threw Jasno under the bus. Yes, he's been critical, but I think that might be overstating it.

It was kind of like when Jason threw a hissy fit about Gibbs' defending Stephon Heyer in a press conference about his play in last year's pre-season games. Did it ever occur to Jason that Gibbs is not going to throw a rookie ufa, who was playing reasonably well for a raw talent, under the bus to the press?

Jason took it as evidence pure and simple that Gibbs was crazy. I admired Gibbs for it. Praise in public and criticize/correct in private.

I disagree about this lying thing. When it comes to strategic trading/drafting/etc . . . you don't give any hint of what you are doing to the opposition.

Read Jon Feinstein's Next Man Up about the Ravens and, in part, the crazy lying and bluffing teams pull on each other about "if you don't trade with me I am ready to trade the pick to such and such a team . . . (when they have not even spoken with that team).

Happens all the time.

The other possibility I suppose is to become Bill Belichik and never say anything remotely at all. It has worked for him.

Aug. 23 - Skins @ Panthers

Aug. 28 -- Roster cutdown to maximum of 75 players.

Aug. 28 -- Jags @ Skins

Sept. 1 -- Roster cutdown to maximum of 53 players.

Which seems to make 8/28 a tricky day ... one where a guy REALLY wants to be on the depth chart the day before the Jags game.

Also, thinking this through about Jansen (the image of him lying on the field with the ankle thing has been flashing in my mind all day ... my 14 month old is cutting teeth), I say that Jansen must remain the starter ... at least until Heyer is back to full strength. Brett tells the media first he needs a break.
Then says "I think I'll talk to Eric this afternoon about it... no pain, but I'm 38 years old..."

Wonder what Head Coach Mangini's initial thought was when someone in the media mentioned to him "uh, Brett says he is going to tell you he needs a break"

Or an assistant coach heard about it and told Mangini "Brett just told the press he is going to tell you he needs a break... something about he is 38 years old."

Actually nothing wrong w/ needing a break at 38! All teams rest certain guys in training camp at certain times.

Problem here was Brett telling Media before sitting down w/ the Head Coach of the NY Jets.

Wonder what their relationship will be like this year?

As a fan who lives through each game in quiet disgust, it is my right to have someone to blame for our failures. What will I do when our score look like football scores and not baseball scores?!? What will I do when our D-ends make opposing QBs run like scared little girls?!? If we're going to have a real football team to root for, I want someone to blame!

Caught a late matinee of Tropic Thunder with Mrs. Freakzilla this evening. Could've done with the profanity notched down a little, but all in all a pretty funny movie. Agree with Corkczar on Tom Cruise being exceptional, though my money is still on Robert Downey, Jr. The guy is just fun to watch in everything. We did a Downey trifecta a few weeks back with Chaplin, A Scanner Darkly, and Iron Man, and the guy is just a great actor all around.

There's a pub-ish restaurant at the Olympia mall called Pints & Quarts (with about 50 beers on tap), where we ate dinner after the flick. They have an autographed Mike Sellers 'Skins jersey on the wall (he went to high school near here). I'd seen it before, but what I hadn't noticed until tonight is that there's a Zorn jersey about 10 feet away on another wall (tastefully displayed next to a Largent jersey).

Made me feel all warm 'n fuzzy-like.

Which choice is needed to get the NFL network? You have to subscribe to 1000 channels or 2500.

BTW, Jansen better pull his head out of his *ss before he gets JC killed!
Go Skins!

Late to the blog.

Back in the day when McD's burgers were $0.15, the best DMV crab cakes were at Captain Galley's in Chrisfield, on the Eastern Shore. I have no idea if they are still in business, or if the same family runs the place.

As for the folks in Charleston BOILING your crab with garlic puts you two steps further down the food chain than Red Lobster patrons.

OLYMPICS SPOILER ALERT

Usain Bolt wins 100m in WR time (9.69)

It's not a great link and it's sure to be gone before many people click on it, but here it is since NBC didn't show it live

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6Wt-uHy6hE

JM, after this race, there's no question who the world's fastest human is. Bolt's slightly behind after the first 10m, then he goes into another gear and smokes the rest of the field, going so far as to slow down over the last 5-10m.

Absolutely sick.

Think he's got a great shot at breaking Michael Johnson's 200m WR.

END OLYMPICS SPOILER ALERT

I still do not understand Jason's post the other day about the past framing the future. Perhaps someone can explain it to me.

Taking a 5-11 dismal franchise and turning it into a respectable, professional .500 franchise that makes the playoffs twice in the last four years and wins one playoff game is nothing to celebrate according to Jason (indeed it would be "defeatist" to do so).

Yet, it it would be fine and dandy--indeed "a fair expectation"--were a coach to take a 9-7 playoff team and drop them to 6-10.

This I do not get. I am a longtime season ticket holder and know many Redskins fans of different stripes. I know more than a few who thought Gibbs 2.0 was a great disappointment and a failure (I personally don't agree). But none of those fans who thought Gibbs was a disappointment would be happy with a 6-10 season. If they weren't happy with Gibbs 2.0, they sure as heck aren't going to be happy with 6-10.

Who would? Indeed, 6-10 would tie for the worst record of any first-year coach in the dreaded Snyder era (Gibbs was 6-10, Marty was 8-8 and even Spurrier was 7-9) and none of the prior coaches inherited a playoff team.

That is my question. Does anyone endorse Jason's view of world?

Speaking of CLAMS

I'm an East coast guy, prefer East coast seafood over West Coast.

THAT SAID:

The BEST clam chowder I've ever had is at a place called "SPLASH!" in Pismo Beach, CA. They also have a place in San Luis Obispo, I'm told, tho I haven't eaten there,

It's kind of a hole in the wall, in the middle of town, usually a line, but the line moves fast and it's worth it. The CC is served in hollowed out bread bowls, and goes directly to your arteries. But worth it. You can order it to take out and take home, too. Dunno if you can order it on line, or if it travels well.

Best Lobster in Maine? Nunan's. Cape Porpoise, near K-bunkport.

The Redskins appeared in the playoffs twice in four years. I don't know about anyone else, but I was happy playing football in December. Do I want to win a SB...hell yea, but some teams rarely mae the playoffs and don't know the feeling of football in December. Whether we backed in, kicked the door in, jumped in, or danced in...we were in the playoffs. Gibbs had some success, but it is a fair question to ask what could have been with a more aggressive approach.

Anywho....the Gibbs era is over and Kool Moe Zee and the Wild Wild West Coast Offense is in town.

HAIL TO THE REDSKINS...HAIL VICTORY!!!

James,

I just went back and read what Jasno wrote, and I don't think you accurately represented it in your post. Here's what he wrote:

"So, what's a fair expectation for Zorn? Would six wins - matching Gibbs's total from 2004, with a lively offense that starts taking flight in the second half of the season with Campbell playing well - be horrible? Personally, I don't think so, especially not when you consider how dramatically improved the NFC East is compared to its lowly state in 2004 (and the fact Zorn gets a playoff schedule, while Gibbs was given a much easier slate in 2004 after Spurrier's boys fell apart in 2003)."

Where I think you misrepresent is in writing "fine and dandy" where he wrote "would it be horrible?" I don't think "fine and dandy" means the same thing as "not horrible."

You don't seem to agree with Jason's point about the difficulty of the schedule next year. You don't consider that Gibbs had a big free hand with personnel -- Portis, Brunnell -- while Zorn only gets to sign a backup QB, owing to Gibbs' overspending. And you make no allowance for the 'Skins having to learn an entirely new offense. And Gibbs had an unlimited budget for coaches and freedom to choose who he wanted--Zorn's staff was chosen for him.

So, I think what Jasno was saying was that if an HOF coach goes 6-10 his first year back, then Zorn taking over as a rookie head coach and going 6-10 against a tougher schedule, and with an offense improving in the second half, "wouldn't be horrible." I can see that.

I guess you think that 6-10 would be horrible. So, let me ask you, where would you draw the line between "horrible" and acceptable for Zorn? 8-8? 9-7? 10-6?

Posted by: Motivator | August 16, 2008 3:51 PM | Report abuse

Horrible would be:

1) A losing record along with...
2) Game mismanagement
3) a stagnant offense

I can't see this team less than 9-7
barring a truckload of injuries.

Just finished watching an NFL Network Top 10 episode that I recorded last night, on the top 10 receiving corps of all time.

Art Monk, Gary Clark, and Ricky Sanders came in at #8.

They ranked Bobby Mitchell, Charlie Taylor, and Jerry Smith at #5.

The Smurfs and the Fun Bunch even got about 10 seconds of love.

Good times.

Yesterday, Sal Paolantonio of ESPN was interviewed on Ravens Training Camp Daily...he has been hanging out at the Ravens Training Camp. Sal was asked if Harbaugh will be successful this season...he replied that it will all depend on their QB situation (which is still not settled or exciting). Sal was then asked which of the "rookie" HC's he thinks will be most successful this season (Harbaugh, Zorn, Sparano, or Smith) and he said Harbaugh - because of the veterans on the Ravens. I admit to being confused since Sal practically shot their chances down with the QB comment - guess he was also shooting down our chances - despite the fact we probably have as many veteran players as the Ravens.

Lisa,

Thanks for putting that up. I didn't see it, but it really sounds strange. The only sense I can make of it is (1) Ravens love, especially for Ray Lewis and (2) it's tough to cover 32 teams and be on top of everything. I'm guessing that Sal hasn't been to Redskins Park recently and has no idea what the Redskins roster looks like.

So, basically, Zorn -- a rookie head coach -- has to be better in his first year than Gibbs 2, who is the poster boy for game mismanagement and stagnant offense. Looks like Gibbs didn't set the bar too high, though, did he?

Jansen will be the downfall of the offense. He lost it 2 years ago.

Posted by: RYAN1971 | August 17, 2008 9:50 AM | Report abuse

Motivator,

I totally disagree. Jason did say a "fair expectation" for Zorn would be 6-10. He did later say would it be so horrible? and I don't know what "horrible" would be but I prefer not to look forward to what is "horrible."

Your comment about Gibbs' hand in personnel I also don't agree with. Zorn is taking over a vastly improved team from what Gibbs inherited. On offense in 2003, we had Ramsey handing off to Betts and throwing to Coles, Gardner, and Robert Royall. Do you disagree that we are now better at every skill position on offense than what Gibbs' inherited. And yes the NFC East is improved but Gibbs took this same Redskins team to the playoffs last year in this same improved NFC east after suffering thru the tragedy of the murder of his best player in season.

Also, the alleged tougher schedule is completely false and probably the worst part of Jason's post. Check the record. We were third in 2003 in Spurrier's flameout (the Giants were 4-12). Last year we were also third so, yup, we are playing the exact same third place schedule in 2008 that we played in 2004.

What are my expectations for Zorn? Given the 9-7 record last year and that fact that we returned basically every starter (swapping Taylor for Daniels which is an upgrade) I would expect at least 8-8. I am realistic. The NFC East is very good.

I end up back where I began where I still don't understand how Gibbs 2.0 is a failure and 6-10 is a "fair expectation?" for a playoff team. 6-10 is almost never a "fair expectation"for a playoff team unless they lost key players which we did not.
