Cartwright and the Weekly TCCLs

Good to be back in a normal NFL weekly schedule, which is always more conducive to our usual Friday pastime around here, the Tom Cruise Couch Leaps. So, on that note, here's the week that was:

31 TCCLs - Rock Cartwright. If you don't know, you'd betta ask somebody. Rock has long been the man around here, and in an opener in which far too few teammates brought it, he still did.

10 TCCLS - Soccer jerseys: they're not just for the pub anymore. Yeah, my wife cringes whenever I put one on (and I'm not entirely blaming her for that), but I think we could be on to something here. Jim Zorn stopped mid-sentence at his presser the other day to give me props for the old Bayern Munich jersey I was rocking. If this guy makes this thing work, then maybe this could be like the new bandwagon??? Okay, not so much. But I figure I'll wear one to the day-after-the-game pressers religiously now and see if I get another rise out of him. Might have to get down to my parents house to retrieve some oldies but goodies.

5 TCCLs - Jim Zorn. Yes, he made some major, major mistakes the other night. But give the guy credit for ripping himself publicly over it, taking full blame and walking us through his errors. This wasn't some blanket, hollow, "Don't blame the players, blame me," mumbo-jumbo. This was incident-specific introspection and self-scrutiny. If you're gonna be open and honest in the media about things when the players mess up, you've got to be the first guy to shred yourself, too.

- 12 TCCLs - Jeremy Shockey. Comes off as pretty whiny in his recent blog post. A poet like fellow TE Chris Cooley he is not. If he makes an impact Sunday, though, the Skins could be in trouble.

- 17 TCCLs - QBs. Bad week for them, eh? From Brady's injury to Vince Young's meltdown to Garcia and Croyle getting hurt, too, to the usual scrutiny JC faces. It's all part of the gig, though. And I'm sure Aaron Rodgers, Donovan McNabb and No. 4 are smiling after Week 1, so I guess it wasn't all bad.

-120 TCCLs - Schlub Grub. Would you believe that we've actually started to lay off the free food? Baconators rest in their wrappers for hours on end. The daily deluge of milkshakes melt near the window. All sorts of odors permeate the schlub room out at The Park. Leave it to the media to actually end up complaining about free food, but I think the caloric overload eventually just got to us all. Sad but true.

[Editor's Note: Because you're going to ask...This is a little game editors and writers play. Our scribes like to think the food is free, but The Washington Post reimburses the Redskins for the delicious fare our schlubs scarf at Redskins Park and at FedEx Field on gamedays. We appreciate that Zack Bolno and the gang make it easier for us to work by not having to go off-site, but we do pay.]

I believe this is a good blog to discuss the Skins and kick around ideas.

I really don't think it matters (at least not to me) who writes the little entries at the top. Whether it's JLC, Reid or Cindy, who cares.

The best reading is always in the posted entries from fans, imho.

To Wit;

CP, JLC, most of us, ESPN analysts, Maske, Wilbon, Boswell etc said that no one showed a fire....

as well as Zorn made many mistakes, not having a hurry up offense etc

and yes, JC faces a lot of scrutiny, none more so then here on this blog.

Really you are just a hypocrite who hates on him... toolbag

Some of you remind me of a scorned wife. Why let what JLa says bother you so much? Or if you do simply stop reading it. He clearly covers the skins in a negative fashion I think that's pretty apparent. Maybe he "hates" the skins or maybe it's his writing style either way what is the big deal?

From the times:

After posting a 81.2 passer rating against the Giants, Jason Campbell has ratings of at least 81.0 in four of his past six starts. Campbell only had five such games during his first 15 starts.

Clinton Portis needs one yard against the Saints to reach the 7,800 mark for his seven-year career.

Chris Cooley needs six catches to tie Larry Brown for 10th in Redskins history with 238.

Santana Moss' five catches for 74 yards and a touchdown against the Giants have him 48 catches, 653 yards and five touchdowns in his last nine games, including the wild-card loss at Seattle.

Antwaan Randle El's fifth catch against thr Giants was the 250th of his seven-year career.

I would like to make JLC a bet, when the skins get to 8 wins this season (if) He has to buy a custom jersey with either Zorn on it or La Canfora and where it to every presser after that.

"new dude" a few posts ago did it for me.

Too much ego, and to make it worse, at times, feigned humility.

Aside from contempt for the Redskins, which enough people have rightly complained about, LaCanfora loves that much of the blog is about him. His posts contain little to no inside information. It seems this blog has become nothing more than reactions to a man who is compelled to cover a team he hates because it meets the professional prestige or career step he feels he deserves. Unable to belly up to the responsibilities of fully covering the team, La Canfora has resorted to indulging himself in his contempt. The Post's Sports page is slipping (a sentiment well documented on this blog) and the work of La Canfora in covering the town's most beloved institution might be the most damning evidence of this. I am sure the paper is aware of La Canfora's pseudo controversial approach, and I am sure they embrace it. Sadly, coverage of the team has suffered as a result.

I've checked in on this blog over the past year silently, looking for info on the Skins. What I have found more often than actual information on the team is the whining analysis of a lazy newspaper writer who has the benefit of covering a questionably run organization. Whether you agree with them or not, going after Snyder/ Cerrato is easy, it's mindless and any real fan motivated to the point of getting information online would naturally, at some point, at least question the owner’s approach. The constant beating of the drum is beyond unnecessary, even when the point is valid, and the "thought" that is put into La Canfora's efforts are no better than that heard on talk radio, only they are dressed with a better hold of the language- though clearly without spell check.

Upon first read, La Canfora is protected from "hack" status only through the protection of The Washington Post sitting above his name. But over time, without providing substantial information on the team and even the more interesting items actually being links to other peoples work... it has to be clear to everyone, even those that desperately defend him, that we as readers of the paper and blog deserve better than La Canfora and the Post can and should provide it. I don't know the man, but from reading this blog he has willingly put forth enough of his personality to the point where his snide attitude and bloated self image have become just as grating as the lack of information provided about the Washington Redskins. To pile on, I have no problem adding that the soccer junk, music plugs, Jerry Coleman updates and hipster white boy post-slang talk have become just as annoying as his pride in hating Vinny. And that doesn't mean you need a fan, or someone sympathetic to the organization- just someone willing to do the work and get the job done.

Wouldn’t we all like the odd bit of actual inside information? I suppose until anyone demands better, readers will be stuck hearing the same song over and over (and to only praise the team when they are doing well does not make for unbiased reporting, or reporting at all. I can provide optimism just as well from my couch). Anyway, I’m sick of it. This place is a joke, and rest assured I will obey the calls of “get lost” fully understanding that if I don’t like something I don’t need to expose myself to it. The Post isn’t the only game in town, but as a local, having grown up reading the paper I am disappointed to do so.
