This Week in TCCLs: O Line, RBs, Taylor

Just another dull week around Redskins Park, eh? Same ol', same ol'. Oh, where to begin? Best TCCL week ever?

149 TCCLs - O Line/Portis/Sellers. Skins needed to make a statement in the run game, and they did just that. Consistency must now be the rule.

55 TCCLs - Jason Taylor. The 10-day break between games helped his knee and the guy looked like himself against the Saints. He was a regular presence in the face of Drew Brees and the Redskins are going to need similar performances all season.

26 TCCLs - RB Feuds. Again, I'm maybe in the minority here, but I didn't think the Portis/BMitch radio thing was that big of a deal. It's something generally best left for a private discussion perhaps, but this kind of thing happens and it made for compelling radio at first (then I thought it kind of went on too long). I don't think either guy is to blame, per say, and it's something that will happen if you are doing your job in the media. Cooler heads prevailed and Portis says it's over and there is no need to meet with Mitchell and talk it out. (Maybe Coach Thompson can get them to hug it out for charity, Ari Gold-style?)

-47 TCCLs - Blogging in the Buff. Probably not a great idea under any circumstances. Then, throw in some playbook action, and a camera, and well, chances are you're going to end up in the coach's office sooner rather than later. Call me new-school, but I didn't have a huge problem with the Saints quiz ending up on the net, as it was not anything schematic or directly related to what the Skins run. It certainly is a slippery slope, though, and I understand why Jim Zorn put the breaks on anything to do with the playbook and the internet as well as, let's say, nude blogging. There is such a thing as overexposure.

-67 TCCLs. JC bashers. That pass to Moss, and the performance overall will perhaps quell the calls for Colt Brennan (CoC)???

-2008 TCCLs - Radio Killed The Management Star. Vinny Cerrato, DC's newest shock jock. Will four hours a week be enough for an insatiable public?

I only care about winning SBs (3 of which Dallas has won since you guys last won one).

Oooohh...a whole 12 f-ing years ago!

Here's a rule I had to discuss with some jerk Raven fans: you have no right to brag about a Super Bowl unless you've won it within the last 5 years. The Redskins AND the Cowboys have long droughts and neither side has an edge there.

Besides, the Skins won 2 titles before the Super Bowl era and thus have just as many titles (regardless of what you call the title) as the Cowboys.

Enjoy getting fudge-Packed by Green Bay this weekend...

I bet the same number of people who think that TCCLs are now or ever were funny, even in an ironic or cute way, are the same number of people who think Sarah Palin is experienced enough to lead anything more than the crazy-book-burning-mom subcommittee of a PTA chapter.

The more time Vinny spends on the radio, the less time he spends screwing up the team. I say, give him a network TV show. Maybe he can be the plucky sidekick on the next season of Heroes. Or perhaps Jim and Pam's love child on The Office. Or maybe he can join Oprah for a cameo on 30 Rock.

Unfortunately, we don't have any leaders, so we are left with choosing the less of two evils. I'll take a war hero who has spent his life serving his country over a "former" muslim who has ties to Farakkan.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 19, 2008 12:00 PM

I usually don't do politics on here, but this Obama bashing is really starting to piss me off. Let's put the sh_t into perspective, shall we?

Let me get this right

I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight.....(hope I'm not
offending anyone)

* If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're "exotic,
different."

* Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, a quintessential American story.

* If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

* Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.

* Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.

* Attend five different small colleges before graduating, you're well
grounded.

* If you spend three years as a brilliant community organizer, become the
first black editor of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration
drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend twelve years as a
constitutional Law professor, spend eight years as a state senator
representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the
state senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend four years in the
United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while
sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and
Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real
leadership experience.

* If your total resume is: local weather girl, four years on the city
council and six years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people,
twenty months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then
you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

* If you have been married to the same woman for nineteen years while
raising two beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not
a real Christian.

* If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your
disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the
proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

* If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no
other option in sex education in your state's school system while your
unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you're very responsible.

* If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a
prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city
community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't
represent America's.

* If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DWI
conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age
25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska
from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now

Voice of Reason,

I agree with some of what you said, Jerruh has gone on record and said he made some of those trades because he has a good QB now and he's willing to take risks when he's got a franchise qb.

I also think Vinnie probably gets an unfair shake for the most part. I still think the radio show is a bad idea but he doesn't work for me. I do however consider the Redskins a public trust of sorts (Again just my opinion) and I don't think it's a good idea for the team in general but maybe Vin didn't really have a choice in the matter. Obviously this was Danny's call if not his brainchild.

As for other bloggers well, I wouldn't judge Vinny for the callers that call in and I can't hold JLa accountable for the posters here.

Copied from previous thread:
----

It's interesting to me all the hubub about Vinny doing this show, when just about every Redskin HC has down a TV show/ Radio show deal for the past 30 years.

I'd say a HC in the middle of the season is at LEAST as busy as the de facto GM, given he's preparing for games. The GM may be busy, but his primetime is in the offseason.

I think this is much ado about nothing. If the world crumbled while he was on the air, I'm sure someone would come and get him, and he'd handle whatever needed to be handled.

As for criticisms from other "unnamed execs/GM's/sources", show me a time when they say something positive about another team during the season - why not be critical? You might actaully start an uprising by the fans after all, to such an extent where they boo the home team in it's FIRST HOME GAME OF THE SEASON while trailing by ONE POINT to a team that said angry fans felt their team had no shot at defeating before the game.

Seriously people, it's good to question where this team is headed and keep the ol' hairy eyeball on the management when we haven't been very good in a long time, but it's getting simply silly these days. Examples:

1. Jumping off cliffs over losing by 9 at the defending champ's place to open the season.
2. Declaring the draft a bust, when said draft we are talking about occured THIS YEAR.
3. Crying for Campbell to be benched after ONE GAME, and in some cases, asking for Colt...WHAT!?
4. Declaring Zorn unfit to be a head coach...after his FIRST GAME.

----

How 'bout some reasonable criticisms, like:

1. Should we have drafted more DE/DL/OL help instead of skill position? What about an LB?
2. How did Tryon make the team? He was awful in the preseason.
3. Can our "checkdowns" go to the first down marker? Please?
4. Why even think about Santana returning punts? He's finally healthy...
5. Why don't we have a nice jumbotron? We make enough money as a team...

Just some thoughts.

Shaun,

Your post was pretty insightful Thanks.

I have to say, I keep thinking to myself "how sweet would it have been if they had drafted two or three OLs in the second round to go with Rinehart?". Campbell (or whomever or QB is in two years) would have a lot of time to throw and our running game would be set.

I actually think our D line has nice mix of ages. As long as they keep adding a player every year or two. Some ballers, some role players. And if they had drafted someone in the second round, who would you have cut -- that unit is actually pretty deep?

"Yeah," says the bartender, "But what about that hook? Last time I saw you, you had both hands."
"Well," says the pirate, "We were in another battle and we boarded the enemy ship. I was in a sword fight and my hand was cut off but the surgeon fixed me up with this hook, and I feel great, really."
"Oh," says the bartender, "What about that eye patch? Last time you were in here you had both eyes."
"Well," says the pirate, "One day when we were at sea, some birds were flying over the ship. I looked up, and one of them--yarrgh, er, pooped--in my eye."
"So?" replied the bartender, "what happened? You couldn't have lost an eye just from that!" "Well," says the pirate, "I really wasn't used to the hook yet."

In a move that might say a lot about the team’s confidence (or lack of it) in Mark Brunell as the backup to Drew Brees, the Saints have signed veteran quarterback Joey Harrington, according to Adam Schefter of NFLN.

Harrington is in New Orleans and will travel to Denver for the team’s game on Sunday against the Broncos.

He was the third overall pick in the 2002 draft, and he has generated a career passer rating of 69.4 via 76 NFL starts. Harrington has started at least 10 games in every season of his pro career.

After four years with the Lions, Harrington spent 2006 with the Dolphins and 2007 with the Falcons.

She was incredibly ticked now, so she went into the store and said that she would sue the store and kill the bird. Riddle me this: Why is the no defense playing Dallas team universally held as the #1 team in the League? For all the money they spent on that defense, you'd think they'd like to give up a few less points, no?

Also confused about the "best young QB" thing over at ESPN. A lot of people took Eli Manning. Very odd for an erratic, inaccurate player who got incredibly lucky in the SB. The Giants generally win in spite of Manning, not because of him. I'd take Cutler or Rivers over Manning 10 times out of 10 and a few more games from JC like he had against the Saints and he gets on the list as well.

Why the hell does Vinny get ripped for everything? The guy has a radio show for a grand total of 4 lousy hours a week. These same Post reporter crybabies that complained about how there was no accountability or visibility in the Front Office now rips the guy when he makes himself more available to the public and is there to be accountable for the decisions made by the team. To say this is unprecedented is again a hollow argument. Aside from the fact that practically every head coach in the league does several radio/TV/press appearances throughout the week and this takes far more than 4 total hours; coaches are much busier in-season than GMs. The bulk of a GMs job is done in the OFFSEASON, scouting players for the draft and free agency, etc. The in-season work in this regard is minimal, and spot duty at best, i.e. when there is an injury, etc. Even pushing that obvious point aside; let's compare Vinny to Jerry Jones, who besides being the owner is also the GM in Dallas. Jones has a radio show, constantly goes after bad character players like T.O. and Pacman, yet is consistently praised as a smart football guy and great GM/owner by national media. The man hasn't won a damn playoff games in 12 years! We've had more success than that, yet Vinny gets ripped. Face the facts, Vinny has done a better job than Jerah Jones, and most GMs in the league for that matter. We have a lot of talent and have had recent success, plus we are built more now to be successful for a long time. Give the guy some credit and stop with this personal agenda, jerk off.

A burglar broke into a house one night. He shone his flashlight around, looking for valuables, and when he picked up a CD player to place into his sack, a strange, disembodied voice echoed from the dark saying, "Jesus is watching you."

He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off and froze. When he heard nothing more after a bit, he shook his head, promised himself a long vacation after his next big score, then clicked the flashlight back on and began searching for more valuables. Just as he pulled the stereo out so that he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard, "Jesus is watching you."

Totally rattled, he shone his flashlight around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot.

"Did you say that"? He hissed at the parrot "Yes," the parrot confessed, then squawked, "I'm just trying to warn you. " The burglar relaxed.

"Warn me, huh? Who do you think you are anyway?"

"Moses," replied the parrot.

"Moses," the burglar laughed. "What kind of people would name a parrot "Moses?"

The parrot quickly answered, "The same kind of people that would name a Rottweiler Jesus."

Once there was a tricky pirate working his deceptions on the crewmembers of his ship. Since many of the crew frequently lost their lives, the tricky pirate had a new audience nearly every week, so he could play the same tricks over and over. But there was a snag to the tricky pirate's wily ways. The captain's parrot saw each performance week after week and eventually caught on to how they were performed. From then on, when the pirate was doing his tricks, the parrot began blurting out the secrets behind them. "The coin is in his other hand!" "The rabbit's under the table!" "All the cards are the ace of hearts!" The tricky pirate was fuming, but he couldn't do a thing. After all, it was the captain's parrot spoiling all his fun. One fateful day, rats burrowed through the hull and the ship sank. The tricky pirate found himself floating on a peice of wood in the middle of the ocean. Ironically, the parrot was sharing the same peice of wood. They stared at eachother in extreme disgust, but did not say a thing. This went on for a couple of days until the parrot finally, "I give up. Where's the ship?"

Guys, back off the political mud slinging. You aren't getting elected, so what do you have to win?

You complain and complain and complain about not having leaders... Dont you understand? The parties are here to give you what you want. To appeal to the lowest common denominator. And there are some low denominators in here.

I read the same old empty arguments about red vs blue (and not the Halo series, unfortunately) and you fall right into the party traps.

Bam, you another vote, a blob on a poll, a blip on a stat sheet.

You think pro-choice is going to solve our deficit? You think government subsidies are going to lower health costs?

But by golly at least its not what the other guy is selling! Real nice. Way to run a friggin country.

What am I doing? I'm working on a pro-leadership website, at my own expense. Will it change the world? Prolly not. But I cannot delegate responsibility to others any longer, and I would encourage everyone here to look in the mirror and stop shirking your responsibility to do something.

Rom 10:9-10 - if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

Karen,

Please take your bible sayings to the religious blog, if there is one.

Remember the Bible is a book written by authors, you really think any of the talked to Jesus.

John 5:24-26

24"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. 25I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.

Face the facts, Vinny has done a better job than Jerah Jones, and most GMs in the league for that matter. We have a lot of talent and have had recent success, plus we are built more now to be successful for a long time. Give the guy some credit and stop with this personal agenda, jerk off.

As for him vs Jerry Jones? I guess we'll find out when we play him. Pains me to say so, but their team looks a whole lot better than ours. You think bc they lost a few playoff games that we've actually been much better than them? I don't. We haven't made a serious run at the Superbowl in a long, long time.

Choices always were a problem for you.
What you need is someone strong to guide you.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow,
what you need is someone strong to use you...
like me,
like me.

If you want to get your soul to heaven,
trust in me.
Don't judge or question.
You are broken now,
but faith can heal you.
Just do everything I tell you to do.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow.
Let me lay my holy hand upon you.

My God's will
becomes me.
When he speaks out,
he speaks through me.
He has needs
like I do.
We both want
to rape you.

Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life.
Open my eyes and blind me with your light
and your lies.

A 90 year old man is having his annual check-up.

The doctor asks him how he is doing.

"I've never been better!" he replies. "I have an 18 year old bride who is
pregnant with my child! What do you think about that?"

The doctor considers this for a moment and then says: "Well, let me tell
you a story:

I know a guy who is an avid hunter. He never misses a season. But one
day, he is in a bit of a hurry and he accidentally grabs his umbrella
instead of his gun. So, he walks in the woods near a creek and he spots a
beaver in some brush in front of him. He raises up his umbrella, points
it at the beaver and squeezes the handle. *BAM*, the beaver drops dead
in front of him.

"That's impossible!", says the old man in disbelief.

"Someone else must have shot that beaver!"

"Exactly!"

I guess we'll find out when we play them? We determine who is the better GM, and has been for the last several years, over the outcome of 1 game that has yet to be played? So, I guess that means last December when we beat that ass, Vinny was 5 times the GM as Jerah, but earlier in the season Jerah was the better GM? Huh? Your other point is that we're not better than them because we haven't made a Super Bowl run in a long time; um, I'm sorry, but if we're comparing (which is what you do when you're saying 1 is better than another, right?), we have made more of a run than Dallas. In the media's eyes, Dallas is the favorite every season and the Skins are picked to finish last, Jerry is a great GM and Vinny is a joke, etc. My point is, the media knows just about as much as any random dude you want to stop and ask that's walking down the street. Results speak for themselves. We have had more success and have done it with better character guys. Period. I'm still proud to be a Redskins fan. Those of you who aren't are welcome to root for another team if you hate this one so much, fans like you give the rest of us a bad name. Go buy your Tony Romo jersey and get it over with loser.

I realize a few 'Skins zealots despise Colin Cowherd, but his comments about the 'Skins relative to the rest of the NFC east are true: folks, after that Philly/Cowgirl game the 'Skins are stuck in the best division in football, and 9-7 or 10-6 may not make the playoffs.
When you carefully watch teams like Carolina, Pittsburgh, Giants, San Diego, Jacksonville, are they really doing anything offensively revolutionary beyond what Gibbs did in the 80's-early 90's, or even Gibbs 2.0? Heck, DAN HENNING is the Panthers' o-coordinator!! I see the same formations and shifts, and routes run by receivers aren't that much fancier (can't do too much in 2.5 to 4 seconds to get open). The REAL DIFFERENCE IS PLAYERS: these teams have them, the Redskins haven't. As much as I love Jim Zorn, for the sake of continuity with philosophy, which drives the players you draft, Snyderrato should have full court pressed to get Russ Grimm HC. Since that horse has left the barn, 'Redskin football' now must develop a different look under Zorn, IF Snyderrato gives him time to develop a 'football nature.' With the wreck that is our economy (and if more people took an Econ class or two in HS or college we wouldn't be in this mess) the 'Skins may be the only profitable, worthwhile asset Snyder has now, which could be a blessing or curse. The curse being his tendency to meddle, the blessing being his desire to keep it a worthwhile asset will drive him to do what's smart. THE SKINS NEED PLAYERS, period. We've got a qb: I still like JC over Romo or Rothlesburger, and even Philip Rivers, because I sense JC inspires a deeper respect from his teammates than those guys, especially Romo. We need young, nasty studs and characters on both lines as the 'Skins had in the glory years, and next year draft a running back to push Portis a little.
Those Snyder-Zorn haters on the NFL Network will look awfully stupid when the 'Skins beat Arizona this weekend; sad how most of those former players seem to know nothing about the 'Skins, which leads me to believe they know very little about a lot of teams. They all but called Jim Zorn 'in over his head' or 'not ready for prime time' after the first game, which just seemed like the current party line fed to the uninformed.
Finally, be happy with 9-7 or 10-6 and no playoffs, and PRAY for another NFL top-ten drafts in 2009 like the Skins' draft in 1981.
